[Q] Cola rom not installing because of boot loader being locked - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i downloaded the files from the cola thread, the fold they say is called "cola xx.x" or something similar. I do not have this folder at all in the recent download from xda. So I dont know if the link is changed/dead, but the "cola " folder is MIA. Also i have a locked bootloader and they the cola team said I can get into recoery mode but I cannot because of the bootloader. Holding the volume rocker down or up when rebooting does nothing, just a normal reboot. I am new here so I could not post this were I was supposed to and I just need some help getting this rom working. I am rooted using xpria play from verizon gingerbread 2.3.2. Please help me get this rom in my phone or any rom for that matter. I rooted my 2 droids with no probs so I have some experience, its just been ahile. Thanks

Do you have a custom recovery? Maybe use the app x-parts to install recovery. To Get into recovery repeatedly hit Vol down don't hold it as it won't register.

I do not have a custom recovery, tapping on down volume repeatedly did nothing unfortunatley. Anymore feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You have to install one. Go to market & download x-parts. Have you rooted your phone? Because it has to be rooted in order to install x-parts. But once you have root & install x-parts you will be able to get into recovery.
E: nevermind the question about root. Just download xparts

Does Cola Rom work on 2.3.2? If not you will need to upgrade to 2.3.3

Your welcome. No 2.3.2 or 2.3.4 (since it's broken). Were stuck on 2.3.3, unless you don't care about syncing with Google server's (2.3.4):good:

UPDATE: I tries rebooting using x-parts app while holding down the down volume key and still cant bring up the boot menu. What am I doing wrong? And My current version of android is the 2.3.2.

Instead of holding vol try pushing repeatedly. That should work as long as recovery was installed successfully.

Just tried reboot into recovery using x-parts then started tapping on volume key for awhile and still did not work.

Yeah, the new one doesn't seem to work. It's hit or miss. Try this one...

try pressing the back button several times upon rebooting into recovery

r800x CWM problems

Hey guys,
I am new to the Xperia Play and am having trouble with installing CWM on it. It is the r800x model (CDMA, Verizon) and I have a locked bootloader.
I first rooted the phone using the ZergRush method with SuperOneClick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859) and used the phone on the stock ROM a little bit. I did some research on the phone and decided I wanted to flash a ROM, so I went on to the next step to put CWM on the phone. I then searched around the forum awhile and found a method to install CWM through an autoinstaller app on the Market (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840).
The autoinstaller worked and I made a nandroid backup of the phone and then proceeded to flash the GBtweaked rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416470). I wiped data and cleared cache and dalvik and went through all the proper steps to ensure it was a clean install and everything worked fine. Then when I tried to flash the Wifi modules for the ROM the phone would not boot to the recovery that I had installed. I tried doing it when you boot up the phone and press a hardware key repeatedly and I also tried to boot the recovery through the app, but it would just reboot my phone normally. I looked through the forums and could not find the answers I needed so I decided to use flashtool to bring my phone back to its original stock ROM.
I rerooted the phone using SuperOneClick again and downloaded the same app that installs the recovery and while the app says the recovery is installed when I use the app to try and boot into the recovery it does not work and just reboots my phone, and when I try to boot into recovery by tapping a hardware button repeatedly at bootup I cannot get into it either. Can anybody help me figure out whats wrong and also help me get the recovery back on the phone??
Tap the Volume Down rocker on the device

dude.....i feel like the biggest idiot on the face of the earth right now..
thank you man haaha
i mut have searched for hours trying to figure out what was wrong when there was nothing wrong at all
okay well that worked until I flashed the GBtweaked ROM again and now I cant reboot into the recovery to flash the wifi modules I need which was my problem that I started with....

That's because when you flash the GBTweaked ROM, it formats /system, which is where CWM is installed. Download it from the market via 3G or whatever and reinstall it. You should be good after that.
Next time, flash the ROM and wifi modules before you reboot if possible. That's why I have to do with some of the ROMS I use.
I just got my r800x and followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439474 and I can't boot into CWM. I'm installing it via Xparts but I can't boot into CWM. I'm pressing volume down, and it just boots. Help?

Did you really install CWM from Xparts? I just used it and I don't have a problem with it. On the app itself did you go to "INSTALLS" and click on the Install CWM button? Once CWM is installed boot your device powered down. Then press the power again as it boots up keep pressing the volume d rocker down and you would get yourself into recovery easily.
same issue

Yeah, I'm having the same issue. Tried holding vol down while rebooting through XParts, just boots normally. Tried powering off then powering up manually and holding vol down, just boots normally. XParts said successful install of 5.0.2.7. R800X on 2.3.3 stock.
I used that before getting mine unlocked. I always had to move the files manually & fix permissions in order to get it to stick, I haven't used new app tho.

To get into CWM you cant just simply hold volume down. You have to keep pressing it over and over at the Sony screen till it goes in.
Edit: Ok so I ran into this issue today while flashing some stuff. X-Parts does not seem to be loading CWM properly or something as I could not get into recovery at all. So I went looking for the original method and all fixed now. Link below.

Im trying to get into the recovery mode on the R800i. When i start the phone, i press the down button but it just boots up normally. My bootloaders havent been unlocked but my phone is rooted. So how do i enter into recovery mode? And btw, I want to install the Xperia S UI on my Xperia Play, do I need to unlock the bootloaders for that?

Down, as in volume down, or down on the gamepad? First of all, did you actually install a recovery? If not, you may want to look into how it's done.
Also, I'm pretty sure you need to be unlocked for that theme, but I'm not completely positive.

I havent installed any type of recovery on my phone. And I was pressing the volume down button. Can I download the recovery from the android market?
If you haven't installed a recovery, you can't access it. You will want to download this app to get it. You'll be able to boot into recovery from the app's menu, once you get it installed, instead of having to worry about making it through the boot process.
By installing that app, can I also flash a custom kernel?
No, you must be bootloader unlocked to flash a kernel, and even then, a kernel cannot be flashed from recovery.
Sent from my R800x using XDA
you should unlock your phone if you want custom kernals and roms its repetitively easy! just check if you can do it! A point in the right direction HOHO HO

[Q] Arc s on miui wont boot into recovery

Hi, I put a miui rom onto my arc s following this method so that I wouldn't need to unlock my bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742989
Howver It wont let me boot into recovery. I have downloaded rom manager and x-parts and both when I try to do it through this it just does a normal system reboot. I have also tried through the miui settings and the classic volume and power button holding and both also just do a normal reboot.
Does anyone know whats wrong or how to fix?
Thanks very much
Can anyone help? let me know if this is in the wrong place

Did you follow the installation steps ?
Arc S?
Power and vol combo?
If you power on the phone, then repeatedly tap the back button it enters recovery.
Thanks for the replies looks like ill have to re-root it then
(oh I thought it was vol button, my mistake but the back button version doesn't work either
Do i need to 'un-root' before I root again if that makes sense?
I'm having the same problem

Stock ROM, CWM installed, gin2jellybean boot loop, please help!

Hi, I'm pretty new new to this but i am having some issues. I use the 2.3.3 Rogers stock rom with flashtools and I can root and install CWM with xparts. Then, i reboot to recovery and choose to install the gin2jellybean zip which works but when the phone reboots it is stuck on the "android" animation and never leaves that screen. I've tried other stock ROMS with firmares .62, .58, but they would not let me boot into CWM after installing with xparts the phone just boots up to the lock screen as normal no matter ho wmany times i press the BACK button (i heard some people say the volume down button, can this change after using flashtools?). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I want to add that i am using rogers r800a with locked bootloader kernel v. 2.6.32.9-perf....
I finally got it to work after i found this FTF file for r800a:
r800a_N.A Generic_4.0.A.2.368

[Q] There is no way to get to recovery mode

So, I got an used Xperia ZL. The person who sold me this said he installed an international firmware, 4.3 and after installing SuperSU I noticed the device is rooted (and bootloader is locked). Now, I want to install a custom ROM but I cannot access Recovery mode! When phone starts there is no LED, pressing volume up does nothing, I installed Quick Boot, clicked restart on recovery but it does nothing. I even tried ADB boot recovery but the phone just restarts normally. What can I do?? I'm going crazy with this phone. Thanks for the help!
