I've thoroughly enjoyed my short ownership of this device, but after the OMG nature of ICS wore off, it's really just an average phone.
I've ordered a Galaxy Note and will be here Monday. Despite touchwiz, slow updates, blabla, the Note just seems like an incredible device that can finally allow me to leave my laptop behind.
Not trolling, just posting as others may find interest in the Note once the newness of the Nexus wears off.
If you are interested in buying direct, PM me. I will be very fair on the price if it's done outside of eBay's ridiculous fees. Steinheil protector + spare, case and absolutely mint with everything.
No, this isn't an ad for my phone. It's jut a post that's intended to generate discussion on the comparison.
To be honest I would have purchased a note also, but it won't work with T-Mobile 3g. I love my nexus though, and the development on here will make it truely remarkable

I came from a note and got the nexus and I don't regret returning the note at all. The note had very bad color banding or at least mine did. Also videos were horrible due to a halo effect that would show up in a white background. I hope it was just my unit but it seems like many were having the same issue as I did. The only thing I liked much more about the note was the battery life. Would last me sometimes 3 days! Nexus doesn't even come close...

i just did the opposite! i bought a gsm note to use on ATT but it had several issues. had problems with the capacitive touch buttons not working after phone calls. the phone would also shut it self off randomly. i returned it because of those problems. if it wasnt for that it was a really cool phone. the extra screen real estate was nice for games and web sites.
I'm not saying this because I have a Nexus, but I find it hard to understand how you find it just an average phone. The camera is about the only average thing about it, everything else runs so well in ICS which makes the experience as a whole so much more coherent.
The only thing I'd really wish for at the moment would be an LTE version for GSM carriers.

Yeah, I considered that, but ATT will drop the legendary Exoynos processor because it isn't compatible with LTE.
That and who knows how ATT will handle grandfathered unlimited plans that try to go to LTE. I simply don't trust them to let me keep it.
6mbps is plenty fast since I don't tether.

Hello better phone with ICS in the pipeline? Wacom digitizer and all.
Different strokes, I guess. I've owned the Nexus One, Nexus S, SGSII, EVO. Pure google, while nice, ends up being modded to hell anyway by most, so it's not an issue for me personally. I don't like touchwiz, but that's fixable with launchers.
If the Note was going to be on Verizon I would have thought about it. If it gets a CM9 port then it could be a killer phone. My brother-in-law imported one for his AT&T line and I got to play with it. VERYYY NICE.

I have nothing to prove to anyone. Just think the 2500 mAh battery, wacom digitizer and real-estate of the Note are worthy advantages.
Not going to launch into an I'VE FOUND THE JESUS PHONE debate. Most all modern phones are pretty close in performance/features anyway.
Just my preference. The Nexus is a great device, but not the absolute best ever. If it didn't have ICS, this forum would be lit up with endless *****ing.

You shouldn't need to make a thread to justify your decision. Cool, you're going to the Galaxy Note, good luck. The Galaxy Nexus forum will continue the way it is without you.
If you didn't want a debate about Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy Note, then just post up your ad in the marketplace and be on your way. Simple as that.
This is a thread for discussion, not spam.
It's basically sold already, but thanks for the slap.
By the way, its not an ad. I simply mentioned it's available if anyone was interested, which several are so far.
An ad is a thread with the sole purpose of selling an item. This thread is not. Feel free to add to the discussion.
What are your thoughts on the Note vs. the Nexus?
Ok, so I feel that I've ruffled feathers. Will a mod please move this to the for sale forum so I can be a good senior member like I have been since 2006?
That way, XDA homeostasis is reached for all.
Thanks.
There are rumors that the Note is coming to ATT early next year with LTE. Nice, right? Except there is one problem...
They are replacing the Exynos with a Snapdragon S3.
They also had to do this with the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile because the Exynos chipset apparently has problems playing nicely with high speed networks such as LTE and T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ network.
Will make it exceptionally difficult to dev for. And since it's basically a different device with a different SoC, kiss frequent and timely updates goodbye.
If the Note appeals to you, go for it. Just saying, aside from the bigger screen, a S3-verison Note doesn't seem to have any huge advantage over the Nexus.
I've had both. The note is a great device, but IMO the GN is better overall.
I would of gotten a Note instead if it supported t-mobile, sigh.
I'm hoping by the time Note II comes out, samsung will have resolved the shortcomings of exynos' radios as well as samoled+ HD. I will jump all over that.

also, why do you guys need so fast network for a phone?! 6mb is not good enough? what are you doing that need so high speed? video calling?!

This argument is so old.
People on sprint/verizon don't get 6mbps. It's 1mbps or 4G, which do you think people would obviously prefer (barring battery issues)
Makes sense to me but they're toe dipping into the phablet sizes if this is true.
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2012/09/16/source_samsung_galaxy_s_iv_coming_in_february
Angered by the patent case that went against them in the U.S. against Apple, Samsung is said to be looking to make a strong statement by releasing the Galaxy S IV at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in February in Spain.
A Samsung official, which asked to remain anonymous said frankly "Samsung is ready to unveil the next Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy S4, at early next year's mobile world congress (MWC) in the Spanish city of Barcelona."
The device is expected to hit consumer's hands by mid-March at the latest.
In the device, Samsung will use a 5-inch, flexible OLED display, the company's own Exynos processors and quad-core chips.

The timing is right. I hope they bring back UMS personally.
*edit*
So it turned out to be a rumor and the only part of the rumor that you count on to live on is expecting a galaxy S4 in 2013 (following previous release patterns) and maybe the 5" screen. At the same time I will say having Samsung " deny " the rumors at this time means sqwat. I don't know any company that confirms rumors so far in advanced.
**2nd edit**
So the source was very close to the release date as the device launched in April not March.

I think it would be wise for samsung to wait till Q3 of 2013 to announce the galaxy s4.
They need to maximize s3 sales before announcing their next flagship.
wtttfffff :crying: 2 year contract should have waited
They come out with these phones to fast it is hard to keep up when one always wants newer and greater. Personally I really love the larger sized phones they fit my hands better. Well in a few months we should find out if the rumor is true.
I wonder what new innovation this phone will have. Let's face it Apple ain't innovating anything these days. But I don't don't like how they're making the display bigger anything 5 inches or bigger is to big imo.
That is highly doubtful. The iphone 5 is out and it wasnt impressive at all. It simply gave samsung the chance to sue apple for lte stuff used in the i- phone and magbe panorama mode and other stuff.

No they don't, they've already sold more than 20 million units.
I can see it being announced at MWC but I would highly doubt it would be available much sooner than the May/June like the S3. Also, no UMS wasn't a Samsung move it was a Google move.

No UMS is Samsung. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. Samsung CLEARY has the ability to turn on UMS as they have done with their Note. I know for a fact because I have the T-Mobile Note that came with ICS stock out of the box and it has UMS in addition to MTP.
Its beautiful man, it works either way and both drives are available at any given time.
Anyways I hope Samsung turns the feature back on in the S IV.
IF you want to know what Google actually said about UMS look here:
http://www.t3.com/news/galaxy-nexus-usb-mass-storage-debate-google-says-no
Personally (and I'm not directing this at you-general statement) I'm tired of hearing people parrot (paraprhasing) "Google doesn't support UMS". Maybe this will wake people up and demand the manufacture (Samsung) to get its act together and add the feature back.
So if you buy a Nexus then you should not expect UMS. If you buy another device with a physical SD card and/or an additional slot then you should expect UMS.
Dying to have note 2 in my hands but now i'll wait and go for samsung galaxy s 4 ...
Leaking this rumor was most likely calculated by Samsung to get some attention away from Apple with the iphone around the corner.

Why is everybody so surprised? It's a yearly deal anyway... Plus whenever you buy one new phone the next new / better phone comes out pretty much right away... iPhone anyone??! That's how money is made... Samsung is not gonna bank on just one flagship device and a bunch of "knock offs" they gotta think ahead too. And we are just like iPhone users, we will buy the next big thing...
I'm sure that most of us keep our phones in very good condition and could easily sell them around that time for a decent price in order to pick up the S4 if "needed".

I have one upgrade remaining on my plan. Gonna see where this one ends up with the S4, and still interested in BB10.. I know call me crazy!
Honestly how much more can they pack in these things?
Also 5" is getting to big. Reason why I never went with the Note. Way to big foe a phone IMO.

Definitely fake. Samsung does NOT release there big products at something like MWC.
TL;DR? Read the title. Nitty-gritty is below.
My Verizon contract is done in May. But I have a deal where I can go to AT&T for free. That being said, at $88 a month on vzw, does it really make sense to wait for the new round of galaxy devices? The money I'd save leaving Verizon would pay for the phone in full by that time. I've got nothing to use on AT&T in the meantime.
It makes economic sense to leave vzw as soon as I can. That being said, the HTC one is coming out in a few weeks, right at the end of my billing cycle. My first and only smartphone has been this thunderbolt. I'm accustomed to HTC and sense. But the lack of swappable battery and SD card slot is something I'd consider a drawback. I can also trade in this tbolt for $100 with their trade in incentive program.
But of all the phones out right now, the Note 2 is the one I want. It just seems to be the perfect phone. I'm just worried about getting it so late in the game. I bet AT&T still charges full price for it too, probably $300 on contract, right? If I got a note, I'd probably want to sell it and put the proceeds toward the note 3, when it gets here...if it isn't 6 inches like the rumors say.
I care about rooting and flashing ROMs. I'd have smashed my bolt by now without those things. HTC seems to be locking down their stuff a lot these days, and if not them, then the US carriers. Is sammy any better?
Seems like the cheapest thing to do would be to ditch vzw asap, and score a HTC One and cash in on $100 for my old tbolt. And while I generally like HTC (wife has a HOX), I can't help shaking the feeling that I should get a note instead.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I would wait for the S4 announcement. Then decide between that and the One.
Yes, wait until the S4 announcement and buy a used S3 on craigslist to carry you over until GN3. The sd card, replaceable battery, and S Pen are 3 important features. The LCD screen on HTC One X is one feature over GN2 but maybe a non issue with future GN3. BTW, GN2 has a ton of incredible developers on XDA.
I own the GN2 and HTC One XL through ATT. The GN2 is all I use.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
I'm always in a time crunch and end up with HTC because of it. I wanted the SGS2 in march of 2011, but at the time there were no signs it would be on Verizon, and we all knew unlimited data would be getting canned soon. So, I took a thunderbolt instead.
Now it appears to be the same problem. See, I'm not a "gets a new phone every three months" kinda guy. I have my phone for two years. I want those two years to be as tolerable as possible. Before ICS "officially" came out, my Tbolt felt like crap. Only now with an official release is it finally great again. Honestly, I could stay right here for awhile now, and be good.
But I'm cheap. I want to stop paying Verizon immediately, and start saving. To that end, I need something that'll work on AT&T. The line's there, the upgrade's there; it just seems silly to wait. You might be right about picking up an interim phone.
I just wonder if the note 2 will be valid for two years starting now? I also don't like how AT&T is still charging $ 300 plus a two year agreement for these things. Maybe I should get the one (probably $200 on contract), take advantage of the $100 trade in offer, and sell the one when the note 3 comes out...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
What determines to you whether or not a phone is still valid? I, like you, am planning on my next phone to last 2 years. The phone I have now is still valid in my opinion because the developer forums are very active even today. I think this phone will be more relevant two years from now than the HTC One. Like others said though, at least wait until the GS4 announcement, that may bring some price drops on the Note 2.

Also remember gadgets change every year! That's how company's make money. But besides that, they're making the chips smaller & smaller! So that just means bigger and better things for us. As of right now the screen of choice is going to be HD on everything, that's coming out. So depending on if you want LCD, Slcd, OLED, or Pen Tile displays. There's all going to be different in that aspect. So if you can hold out, which is what I'm telling my girl to do. But she may wait fir the GN3! Hey on 3/14 we'll know what the S4 is about .

Dev support is part of it. The thunderbolt forums were getting pretty sparse until ICS dropped. My phone was laggy, had modest battery life, and was seemingly stuck on gingerbread.
Specs might be somewhat less important now, but in 2011 phones were still becoming more powerful by an incredible factor. That seems to have slowed a bit of late. I don't know when a quad core phone with a big battery and 720p resolution will become obsolete.
Surely the ability to switch batteries and expand memory should prolong its life. But purchasing the one, besides potentially being cheaper, seems like a safer bet on the time/obsolescence scale. At this point the note 2 is somewhat old.
I really don't think we're witnessing the death knell of HTC any more than we are Apple's. They just aren't a household name to noobs like "the galaxy" and the "iphone." For what it's worth, I like HTC, and have to imagine them as the number 3 company that makes smartphones after Sammy and Apple.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
I'm going to say wait until the S4 announcement later this week. If you can get a chance to play with the One in store then do so. I don't know how it would feel in your hand compared to the Note 2. I personally am going to wait until the S4 or the Note 3 because I think Samsung is the leading manufacturer for Android phones in terms of overall experience. That being said the note 2 has a badass battery and I don't think that the One will be anywhere close to the note in that regards but let's see.... Only time will tell..

ATT just started selling the Note 2 in October. It may be a while before the Note 3 arrives.

Note 2 refurbished is now $9.99 on Att online. Of course this is 3 days after the return of period on my New one!

Actually, for anyone who's worrying about this being refurbished, they will definitely replace the phone in question with a brand new model if problems do arise. My mom bought an iPhone 4 (refurbished) a few years back and it didn't work correctly from day one, so she brought it to the Apple Store and they gave her a brand new one. My Samsung Galaxy S II (refurbished) fried itself right before my 90 day warranty ended and I took it to AT&T and they gave me a new one.
My point is, if you can get a MUCH better deal on a refurb, don't hesitate to get it because AT&T/Apple/whoever will replace it if it does have a problem and you will probably end up with a new phone anyhow.

Not worth of an upgrade imo. I'll be sticking with my gs3 until gs5 comes out.
the S4 was meant for 2 categories of people:
1. a percentage of smartphone users that have heard of the galaxy model's success and are eager to transcend their mediocre non-flagship HTC, Motorola, LG 2-year contract freebie phones
2. the 30+ million Galaxy S2 users that are, coincidentally, nearing the end of their 2-year contracts.
that's an almost instant 50 million users that will adopt/upgrade to the S4
The one thing which kills it from being a good update is the Very similar design to S3 , secondly we agree that it has upgraded specs but it is more of an S3 and Note II Hybrid, and as far as i guess, people here will agree.

Also, don't forget that Samsung did confirm that some of the software features(hardware willing) will come to the S3. Makes the decision not to upgrade even easier for me.

While that sounds great and all, AT&T will most likely ruin it even if they do let us have it. I am not getting my hopes up...hence the reason why I have rooted and started using custom ROMs. I like updates...and the lack of bloatware. Not to mention I can make the device truly mine...not how the carriers and the manufacturers think I should use my phone or that their stuff is what I really want.
Yes I agree but we are all on Xda because we stick it to the man(ATT). We get our updates from the great developers of xda and im sure once the next "premium suite" upgrade comes around, it will be ported to a custom TW rom in no time.

The screen is the only thing that I'm interested in to be honest. Hell on my gs3 I'm running tasks AOKP so all the features on the s4 would probably disapear when I'm sure I'd eventually jump to AOSP once android 4.3 or whatever comes out.
The HTC One's screen is supposed to be amazing and I like how HTC sorta changed their design and ideology, I won't get one regardless.
I do like the fact of the larger battery(2,600mHw if I'm not mistaken)compared to our 2,100 I believe, because I love the fact my Galaxy Note 2 will last me 2, sometimes 3 days easily with battery to spare.
I must admit that I'm torn. I upgrade to the successor in the Galaxy S series yearly, but this year I'm leaning toward to HTC One. Samsung failed in releasing a phone which is pretty much the same as its previous years iteration. There is no true upgrade besides the screen size and resolution that of which 75% of humanity can't discern the difference. They're not Apple. They aren't in control of their OS like Apple which has no competition in hardware within iOS. That's why an incremental upgrade works for Apple. Android on the other hand has many different options and premium hardware to compete within the same OS, so Samsung basically telling customers that all you're getting is a few gimmick features and besides that this phone is really a Galaxy S3, will come back to bit them in the ass.

While this is true for those of us who know about these things and actually pay attention to details, Samsung is banking on everyone else (which is the majority). Also if they just quit making S3s and focus on S4s then soon, there will be no S3 phones available new and people will buy the S4 due to no other alternative. It is just trying to utilize their "cash cow" line.
It's that time of the year again when new devices are around the corner. I pose a simple question. Will you upgrade to the Note 4.
Most of us, I'm sure, are under contract and most us may have renewed contract once Note 2 came about. (I know I did.) Any who, I've been reading a lot about the Note 4 and it's speculated specs. I must say, I'm impressed. I was going to get the Note 3, but at the time I didn't really want the upgrade, nor needed it for that matter. My phone still works great, but now has a crack on it and the battery doesn't quite last as long. Doing frequent rom changes helps get rid of the clutter... lol.
Final verdict though, I think i will upgrade.
probably going to jump ship to windows phone. looking at a 1520 and going to straight talk
Yup. Going to get the note 4. It's a perfect phone for work and if it's got the flex display, I'll be extremely happy.
The gear had made it much better to not pick up the phone all the time to check who's calling or messaging. Can't wait. But have to until december. Oh well great Christmas gift to myself...lol

Definitely a yes. Loved my note2 but two years felt like a long time. Right now having the itch to upgrade something newer.

Nope. Getting a LG G3 next week.
I like Samsung but their business model lately has been wonky at best with Knox and putting out updates. Not to mention them pulling and Apple move on new devices with a BS upgrade in hardware or software and calling it NEW AND IMPROVED kinda like the Galaxy S4 or the Note 3 just add an S at the end and you're all set.
There is a sticky specifically for upgrading and other phone discussions
Thanks
