[Q] New Galaxy S3 having display/power issues. *VIDEO* - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

**Warning, the language in the video isn't really worksafe. This is my first post on these forums, not sure how you guys handle stuff like that**
youtube.c***om/watch?v=***VL6TN_kYvP0&feature=plcp
Just delete the asterisks, I don't know how else I'm supposed to link the video. If you need to delete it mods, go ahead. Just search for "Galaxy S3 Video Display Issues" by the user Brocsta876.
As you can see, barely tapping the back of the phone to the cable would kill the display. Sometimes it would have a purple hue, other times it would have a bunch of scan lines and eventually would just go black and wouldn't come back until I pulled the battery or held home + power. It also tends to straight up power down randomly. Obviously I have a defective model, but has anybody else seen anything similar to this?
The only thing I've done to the phone is rooting it, no custom firmware or anything like that has been installed. I'll be returning it to the Sprint store tomorrow, but in the mean time I was wondering if I should unroot the device?
If so, are there any instructions on JUST un-rooting a stock OS with nothing else done to it? No firmware period has ever been flashed on the phone.
I've got the phone insurance AND I'm within the 14-day cancellation period, so I don't anticipate any issues, even with the phone rooted. But I'd rather be on the safe side.
Thanks for any help!

Use QBKing77 How to unroot/unbrick. Pretty much make it like it was it out of the box.

Hello!
Was just wondering if you followed the suggested unrooting method and if there was any change to your phone or did you simply return it?
Thanks!

I haven't returned the phone yet, I'll be going back to the store in about 9 hours. And thank you for the quick response Speedin07si. I actually found a "temporarily disable root access" in the SuperUser app that is installed with the root. I also installed Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and it says that I do not currently have the device rooted after disabling it in SuperUser app.
I should be alright (hopefully) at the store. I know the salesman who sold it to me knew all about rooting and was cool with it and stuff. Let's just hope I can get a new one without any fuss.

[Q] Ghost Touches on Stock EVO

I have the EVO Rooted (the real way) and ever since installing cy's senseless RC I've been having issues with the screen registering a tap on the top left corner about 1/4th the way down the screen so I'm constantly closing the calander or whatever else I have in that area, this is including programs, phone calls etc. I was literally fighting with my phone the other day. Now I've reinstalled a 2.1 rom and it didn't do it and I've installed multiple 2.2 roms and it still does it. I thought it might be the fps uncapping hack most people include so I figured once the stock rom from sprint came out and was rooted for us it would fix my problem. Wrong... Now I'm stuck between a rock and a sprint store as I can't make it happen constantly but it happens maybe 5 times throughout the day and I have to just wipe my fingers over the area of the screen and its usually fine. I want to install the Stock rom, essentially un-rooting my phone but then if that fixes the problem I cant take it back and exchange it at sprint. Or I cant make it happen for them and then I'm stuck again with a phone that I can't root. Any ideas guys, is this happening to anyone else? I've researched online and haven't seen anyone else with a similar problem.
first off, whats the "real way" for rooting?
if unrooting fixes your problem whats the problem? is there some reason you MUST have a rooted phone? are you doing anything that you otherwise couldnt do with a rooted phone?
many people are experiencing phantom screen presses (myself included), also many people arent.
if its a rom issue, then check in the dev secion for the rom and see if anyone else is having this problem. sounds like a screen problem.

The real way for rooting not the unrevoked method.
Every rom after a certain kernel version does it to my phone but I couldn't begin to guess which one with all of these different version floating about. I can flash back to EVOlutionX and it doesn't do it, not that I've seen yet. If unrooting my phone fixed the problem then as I said I obviously would not be able enjoy a rooted phone. I'm not even going to begin listing the benefits of a custom rom or creating my own which I've done in the past. I was going to post in all the particular rom threads but I figured instead of posting multiple repeated threads since it happens in ALL of them, then I would do the forums a favor and post in the general Q&A section as I did. So who else is having phantom screen presses as myself and nenn are, and have you done anything to correct the problem?
Update: I found a forum post on another site of a person who took the OTA update 1.47 completely stock and its doing the same thing. I think I'm going to wait until its happening and catch it on video and then flash back to stock and take the evo in for warranty replacement. Hopefully they will accept this as reason for replacement.

[Q] adw launcher redraw

I started using adw launcher ex and widgetlocker last night (good thing I couldn't sleep ) and am loving them to bits and pieces. one thing, though...
the home screen redraw thing is starting to get on my nerves. it's not so bad when using the home key to jump to the home screen, since I back out using the back key (close the app, save the ram), but even if I let it sleep long enough, it'll lag on redraw when I unlock it -_-
I've seen a fix on the internet that looks tempting but it requires that i root my phone; call me a coward, but my ill-experiences with this sort of thing have left me with no intention of doing so in the near future. any other solutions?

Well, I have this problem too sometimes. A reboot could help, and it just disappears for me after a while...
Then again, if it doesn't work and you want to root your phone, you could always post here. I'm sure you'll be helped quickly.
One last thing: Do you have a link to the video? Might be helpful later on
for now, disabling and uninstalling widget locker () has solved the problem. but then, the problem practically wasn't there when i first installed, so i wouldn't consider this case closed just yet
and i know i'll find help with rooting at xda, it's just that if i can brick my phone simply updating the firmware, who knows what i'll do while rooting? plus, there's still 2 months in my warranty, so if i ever decide to root, i'll let the warranty run out first
as for the fix, it wasn't really a video. search the forum (not the samsung galaxy s one) and you'll find it. but in any case, i have the link right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932820
if you've rooted your phone, this fix is apparently guaranteed to fix (lol) the problem, which is why it's so tempting

How did you try to upgrade your phone? Because, when I tried to do it with KIES, I bricked it too. Now, with ODIN, I don't worry about that anymore, once you know, it's easy.
Anyhow, thanks for the link.

i'm happy to report no problems in the hours since i deleted widget locker
but who knows when redraw lag will rear it's ugly head again? i'll wake this thread back up if that happens
by the way, i have another question, might as well ask it right here
have you had your phone just randomly restart while using adw launcher? because this morning, when i woke up, i heard that sound that plays when you plug your phone into the charger (i left it on there in the middle of the night). i figure it might have been a random reboot, but will take any other theory (heck, i'd LOVE to. i thought i was through with my phone randomly rebooting -_-)

Phantom Soft Key Issue

I wanted to get the opinion of the devs who make all of the ROMS for this device. Below is my experience and my theory:
I have had the phantom soft key issue on every incarnation of the GSII software. I un rooted and went all the way back to the beginning. I used each rom version till the issue occurred, then I let the phone update to the next ROM version and repeated the process. Every single un rooted update had the same issue and then every single Rooted ROM all ROMS for the ET4G were tried and the issue occurred.
Strange part is it came out of nowhere. I have had and have been flashing for an entire year without issue and one day all of a sudden... BOOM. I don't think it is as simple as the signal issue. I think it has to do with flashing as well. Unless this is happening to someone who has never rooted their device, I think something in the roms we flash trigger the issue which is related to signal.
Has anyone known anyone who has never rooted their device and has had the issue? By the way, the store gave me a brand new factory OEM screen and the issue still occurs.

Right outta the box before rooting it?
I personally think its hardware related with, either over time the screen moving and the heating up of the device causing phantom button presses... this only recently started happening to me and after i wipe screen with cloth while its turned off it goes away. for awhile... idk haha
I disabled the hardware capacitive keys and use the software on screen buttons. Problem solved

I have had this issue several months and now have a good solution. Use this info posted by elijahbrown on Page 464 in PA thread I believe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34125394
" Disables menu key!
Ooookay..
Go to system/usr/keylayout
Select sec_touchkey. kl and edit as text. You'll see key 217 is search. Delete that line of code or put a "#" in front of it to turn it into a comment. Save the file.
Re boot and let meet know.
Just curious as to why you want to do this so bad? "
# comment out menu and search keys. Save file and Set permissions.
Then head over to the play store and get Button Savior. I paid for the advanced features and am very happy. Have to keep the phone until may 2013, sprint claims liquid damage so no replacement.
Button Savior on screen hidden pop up menu buttons works great and no more phantom presses menu or search pop ups ever again!

[Q][Help] Phone constantly "reboots", stock firmware, have logcat!

Alright, so my girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S II started to go through these weird partial reboots several weeks ago (maybe even months). The phone would randomly go black, play the stupid shutdown/startup (dont remember which) jingle...then just simply be at the lock screen with a crossed out circle where the signal bars would be (for just a couple of seconds). When this happened, I used to just tell her to shutdown the phone, take out the battery, and let it sit for about 30 seconds, then put everything back together and start it back up. This seemed to work, which made me think it might have just been a software or at worst a memory issue of some kind.
This issue was always intermittent, but now, no matter what I do, it just keeps looping this "restarting" problem. I can't access any internal memory space from my computer because in the time it takes to connect, it just "reboots" again. I made a logcat of the phone up until the "reboot", and in doing so noticed that when I would browse the phone via adb shell, I saw no mount for the sd card...which then lead me to believe maybe it was an issue with that. I checked the sd card for corruption (and prior to even using it, checked that all blocks were read/writable (legit)), but that led nowhere.
Anyways, not having any idea where to go next, nor where to begin or what to look for in the 5000+ lined logcat, I turn to xda with hopes of getting some sort of help. Thanks in advance for any I get!
EDIT: Oops, some other important notes I didn't mention (other than in title); this is running stock firmware, only OTA. I tried once to upgrade her to ICS via Kies, but the upgrade would never complete. She also refused to let me root her phone...so unless there is a stock recovery mode, her phone has none...
bump, as its been a week and no responses. If anyone has any ideas or can figure out whats wrong from the logcat, please help.
Almost 3 weeks...no answer...isn't there at least 1 person who has an idea or can deduce one from the logcat? Pretty soon I'm gonna have to tell her to give up and get it "fixed" (ie, swapped for a refurb with most likely all her data lost)...

Looking at the logcat if it is accurate the problem is overheating and it is shutting itself down. That's why it keeps rebooting from I read but I could be wrong. Also looks like it has wakelock issues. Lot of wakelock errors in logcat. Some app or apps are causing the wakelock issue find them and remove them that might solve the problem.

i say try to odin back her phone to stock on here there a good post for it to get her back and if she had Gmail sync there shouldnt be a problem unless she really dont want to download everything again i say give odin a shot and then from there upgrade through kies its tricky you have to make sure you have 50% battery life or more and kies errrors out sometimes but it does work i update my friends phone as he does not like all the root stuff lol so i always your kies after a couple errors it will work and thats your best option if she doesnt want to loose anything kies will back it all up for her and are you sure that power button aint sticking sounds like you have a looping issue are you able to go into download mode or are you familiar with this ?
Idk how to read logcats but another idea could be you have the sticky power button issue. I think if it was overheating u would feel it and mention it in the op.

I used to have this problem when my phone was on ICS. I found that putting it back to GB, and using custom JB roms fixed it. I'd try those.

Thats what I thought, because it seemed to get exceptionally hot before "rebooting"...at first...then I was noticing it "rebooting" when clearly cold. If it is indeed overheating like I had thought in the very beginning, is there anything I can do about it? What does it use for heat conductivity and displacement? And for that matter, I would think if it was overheating though, it would actually reboot, not the half-ass semi-reboot its been doing...
And what is wakelock exactly that it would cause an issue? Only apps I see using it are WootWatcher, KeyguardViewMediator and PowerManagerService.

I would use odin...but the phone doesn't stay on long enough to do much of anything before "rebooting". Also, she is already using stock firmware + OTA updates. And her contacts are not what I am worried about, its her photos and such. This is the very reason why I hate internal memory for phones...
And I'm pretty sure its not a sticky power button, I had seen that being a common issue when researching before posting. And again, if I have not been clear, its not exactly "rebooting", just semi-rebooting; phone starts up, crap starts running, a min or 2 later, phone acts like its restarting (plays sound and all), then just comes back to the lock screen immediately...I can't really describe it much more than that.
And no, I'm not familiar with "download mode"

Ya, like I said in the reply above this, I don't think its the sticky power button problem...but I could always be wrong. I only didn't mention over heating because I felt I did a good job of ruling it out.

I wish I could help you further but i can say one thing, the rebooting that your describing is called a "hot reboot". I know what ur talking about and others will too if u use that term. Good luck.

New Note 3 very glitchy ... is this common?

Hey guys. I moved up from a Verizon Note 2 to a T-Mobile Note 3 two weeks ago (and switched carriers obviously).
Since then, it has happened that the phone gets stuck and then reboots.
Three times it's happened while scrolling in the 9Gag app, once while in the Play Store and once as I was unlocking the phone using a pattern an e-mail came in and the vibration got stuck for a while and then rebooted.
I've also noticed that if I have WiFi on, Skype logs in fine, if I leave the house so I go on 4G and then come back to WiFi, Skype refuses to see a connection unless I turn off WiFi or reboot the phone.
Then yesterday the entire phone was in landscape mode even though I had auto-rotate enabled, and whether I turned it off and back on, it stayed on landscape mode until I rebooted the phone.
My wife also has a T-Mobile Note 3, bought at the same time. For her it's rebooted only once so far while using Google Maps.
I've had S3, Sprint Note 2, Verizon Note 2, and my wife has had S3 and S4. Now we both got these Note 3s and man, this is way too glitchy. On the Note 2 I went over 2 months once without rebooting the phone. This one has rebooted itself 5-6 times in 2 weeks!
We're updated to KitKat 4.4.2 (OTA) and not rooted or modified in any way (yet). So I'm wondering if it's KitKat that is glitchy, since our phones before weren't on KitKat, or the Note 3s in general, or just my specific Note 3.
Would love any info on this. Thanks.
I would do a master reset. Worst case Odin stock rom. Avoid send in for refurbished one
Def don't root yet. Try and get phone stable first.
TWEAKED N3
If i'm going to wipe, I might as well root. I've rooted and modded all my devices to date. Just when I got to the Note 3 it seemed that things had become considerably harder than on the Note 2...so I chickened out.
EDIT: if you don't mind me doing the noob thing and just asking, what's the easiest way to get root? I don't particularly care about a customized rom, but definitely want system access to get rid of all this bloat and install my customized video ringtone program.

It not harder it more steps and Odin is best. But if you have hardware issues on stock u need to know before root
TWEAKED N3
Yeah, doing it now. Going to go stock but rooted so I can have some control. Maybe later on i'll flash a custom rom when I have time to go through them and see which one suits my style.
Thanks.
I'd suggest doing a factory reset b4 anything, then if that dose not work, use odin and flash kit kat... then if ur issue persist, maybe contact samsung.

I be honest I don't use it and this kk really doesn't drain the battery like job did stock
TWEAKED N3
I haven't noticed any sort of glitches since I've had my N3. Even after putting the jedi ROM on it seems fine. As far as the battery goes, I know there are alot of complaints that kk has killed alot of the life out of it. I haven't noticed a difference in battery life either. It holds a charge all day and some. And greenify is to stop or freeze certain apps that run constantly in the background that could drain the battery. I personally didn't really like the app nor did I need it.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Well, I went on a stock deodexed rom and got on lean kernel for a while... but it's still doing the stuck-and-reboot thing. It's always related to the touch screen, so i'm either scrolling or clicking to open an app or settings within an app. The phone gets momentarily stuck, then full reboot.
How long do I have to get it exchanged in store? I wonder if i'm within that time frame. It's definitely not normal and getting very annoying.
If i'm outside the time to get exchanged in store, what's my next best option?
I have to say that this experience with the Note III has been nothing short of disappointing and nothing like the two Note IIs I had before (different carriers for each, neither broke or gave any problems).
Here's an update for anyone who finds this and is in the same boat.
I had two issues: 1) the power button became so recessed that it's a hassle to turn on/off the screen, 2) the phone kept turning on and off, by the end almost constantly, without any obvious pattern beyond it getting stuck after me touching the screen (i.e. never just up and turned off while being idle).
Because of the recessed power button, T-Mobile shipped me a replacement phone. Should arrive tomorrow.
I still tried troubleshooting the rebooting issue. I think it came down to one or a couple of the following:
1 - Go Weather EX
2 - Freeza's CRT mod
3 - flashable 1% battery mod
4 - bootanimation.zip support flashable script
5 - something in the Deodexed version of the stock KitKat rom
In prepping to take the phone to T-Mobile, I did the return to stock thing with Odin, putting back stock kitkat odex non-rooted rom. The entire afternoon I got not a single reboot. Since I came back home with the phone, I restored a backup I had made before doing the Odin stuff. Back to rebooting.
So I thought, let's go back to the stock experience like I had earlier, and restore my apps through the play store and manually hunt it down.
Now i'm running the stock odexed kitkat rom, rooted, with lean kernel, with a whole bunch of stock apps frozen, and virtually all my apps and not a problem. I avoided 2-4 since those mess with the framework and I thought it could have something to do with it. I removed Go Weather EX because I experienced a reboot once while setting it up as a live wallpaper.
When the new phone arrives tomorrow I'll try to duplicate my current setup and hopefully won't have any more rebooting issues. I hope this helps anyone experiencing the same thing. I know it's kinda convoluted and not very concise, but then again this experience has been nothing short of annoying and confusing.
