I started using adw launcher ex and widgetlocker last night (good thing I couldn't sleep ) and am loving them to bits and pieces. one thing, though...
the home screen redraw thing is starting to get on my nerves. it's not so bad when using the home key to jump to the home screen, since I back out using the back key (close the app, save the ram), but even if I let it sleep long enough, it'll lag on redraw when I unlock it -_-
I've seen a fix on the internet that looks tempting but it requires that i root my phone; call me a coward, but my ill-experiences with this sort of thing have left me with no intention of doing so in the near future. any other solutions?

Well, I have this problem too sometimes. A reboot could help, and it just disappears for me after a while...
Then again, if it doesn't work and you want to root your phone, you could always post here. I'm sure you'll be helped quickly.
One last thing: Do you have a link to the video? Might be helpful later on
for now, disabling and uninstalling widget locker () has solved the problem. but then, the problem practically wasn't there when i first installed, so i wouldn't consider this case closed just yet
and i know i'll find help with rooting at xda, it's just that if i can brick my phone simply updating the firmware, who knows what i'll do while rooting? plus, there's still 2 months in my warranty, so if i ever decide to root, i'll let the warranty run out first
as for the fix, it wasn't really a video. search the forum (not the samsung galaxy s one) and you'll find it. but in any case, i have the link right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932820
if you've rooted your phone, this fix is apparently guaranteed to fix (lol) the problem, which is why it's so tempting

How did you try to upgrade your phone? Because, when I tried to do it with KIES, I bricked it too. Now, with ODIN, I don't worry about that anymore, once you know, it's easy.
Anyhow, thanks for the link.

i'm happy to report no problems in the hours since i deleted widget locker
but who knows when redraw lag will rear it's ugly head again? i'll wake this thread back up if that happens
by the way, i have another question, might as well ask it right here
have you had your phone just randomly restart while using adw launcher? because this morning, when i woke up, i heard that sound that plays when you plug your phone into the charger (i left it on there in the middle of the night). i figure it might have been a random reboot, but will take any other theory (heck, i'd LOVE to. i thought i was through with my phone randomly rebooting -_-)

Ummm... I never had that with ADW.
However, some ROMs do have problems with random reboots.

k i read about an app called spare parts on here so i figured hey i'll try it out. i did saw what extra setting were there and decided i wasn't gonna use it didn't even change any settings.
after opening the app and then pressing home something wierd happened i saw a white screen with HTC in green in the center for about 3-5 seconds my backround with a loading pop-up and nothing else for about another 3-5 seconds. this is happening every time i press the home button or exit out of an app. it's getting infuriating, i'm also getting wicked bad lagg in sense and lot's of hang up's and force closes. also wicked bad battery life. i don't know what to do to fix it.
i have the OTA and rooted last night with unrevoked method, this morning is when i tried the app around 10 or 11 not sure last couple days is a blur.
can anyone help, how can i restore what i had previously, do i have to do a full wipe.

get used to it if you intend to use sense, the screen you speak of is sort of like the htc sense/rosie intro. If you dont like it you can go vanilla and use another launcher, like adw froyo, launcherpro, or even the extra launcher thats included....
Sounds like you enabled aggressive handling of apps. Can you get in there to turn it off?

Or just do a factory reset.
also, you are experiencing some isolated problems which leads me to beleive the issue is software related rather than hardware.I have experienced NOT ONE of the issues you speak of. Make sure you update prl. I can vouch for that one. My data was 90% broken till i did. Also try and wipe data, that would prolly fix everything as well.....FYI, i cannot gurantee the problem lies with your hardware OR software. Thats just my diagnosis. Good luck

Heh...I did that once on my hero. I know the feeling.
some versions of spare parts come with a launcher. the problem is that when you press the home button now, it's trying to goof with /system, which is forcing the reboot. even though you may be rooted, you don't have rw privileges in /system while messing with android.
you may be able to get away with accessing /system and erasing your goofy installed spare parts app. you'll have to do that through adb shell, and the custom recovery. do a search for 'remove apps', you should find it easily enough. i think the thread was moved from dev to general, or q and a.
anything that will call a write to /system (i.e. a rooted app that needs access to it to work right) has the potential to cause the phone to reboot. when i installed adfree, it had the same effect. trying to install hosts (which write to /system/etc) caused a reboot. i had to install hosts through recovery with a push after remount.
hope that helps
Hmm I installed autokiller and it appears to work doesn't mess with anything that is
I really dunno a way of testing that its actually working though if you where looking for a way to manage memory
I was using a task killer but read up on stuff and turned it off just keeping it in case I need it for something that wont close and the phone is running great and battery life keeps getting better and better.

People you need to be careful with autokillers!
Make sure that you are not closing down sense items.
Put anything that says htc or sense on ignore.
If not you are shutting down parts of sense. Then sense has to reboot. Witch is why you see the white screen with the htc logo in the middle.
When I first start the camera app after a reboot I get the message "Cannot connect to camera". If I try to start the app again it works fine every time until the next reboot.
I've tried a factory reset which worked for a few reboots until the message started happening again.
I'm running the latest stock rom and can't figure out what's changing to cause this.
Any ideas?
Had you got that problem on earlier versions of stock ROM?
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
Sorry, I haven't had the phone long enough to have an older version of the stock rom.
Even I had this error once, I had to reboot the device to get that fixed.
This was the 1st time it happened.
One thing is it happened while shooting a 720p Video.
I don't think it's software problem, probably camera is damaged, or its flex cable. I had the same problem for a moment after disassembling my Play but I forgot to completely connect flex to the connector.
I think the only way to fix your problem is to bring Your Play to authorized service or (if your phone has warranty) send it to SE.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
It could be but it just seems odd that its only the first time using the camera after a reboot. Try the app a second time and every other time its fine.
I would have though if it was the flex cable it would be all the time or happen randomly.
Well.

I'm having an issue like that right now. However, I started getting it after I messed with a ton of system files and the framework-res.apk
Did you do the same? I'm working on figuring out what went wrong, it's definitely a software issue for me.
Possible Problem and Solution
Hey guys,
I noticed something really curious after having an extensive conversation about a few r800's and a Moto Cliq XT about camera issues and I've isolated what might be the problem that people are unknowingly creating.
Status Bar Widgets
Having the LED/Flash/whateveryouwanttocallit light as a widget toggle in Android 2.3.x seems to use the same line of code as the camera. Or something techy like that. IDK. I was about to fix it after a ton of annoying work. But the easiest way (and fastest really) that I came across was just turning the widget off. Removing it completely. In fact, just get rid of that entire feature in 2.3.x and save it for like, IDK, 3.0+
Really hope this helps that random person out there who needs it.

YES, i agree, should make a fix btw, =)
Ok so heres my experience over the first week of having googles flagship phone...
1) When i first got the device home and turned it on It auto downloaded like 50 apps that i had installed on my sgs which i didnt want it to do...
2) when ever i scrolled through the app drawer the first 2 pages was fine but when i scrolled to the 3rd page the launcher would force close every time. A battery pull didnt fix the problem either... Luckily i got an update to 4.0.2 about 30 minutes after the device was on which got rid of that problem...
3) Now that im on 4.0.2 sometimes when im leaving the app drawer to go back to the homescreen the launcher will freeze for a few seconds between the zoom out transition so i see half of thr app drawer and half of the homescreen. This happens completely random and i cant reproduce it.
4) I have just been looking on the market and my screen just shut itself off... I couldnt turn the phone back on through the power button and i had to long press the power button to turn the phone back on. Basically the phone just died for no reason.
I love this phone and ICS but i just wish it would work how its supposed to.
Each of these little things is adding up and starting to ruin the experience.
What makes it worse is that i have seen other people with these same problems.
This is googles latest and greatest phone to the world to show what they can do and it just doesnt work.
I understand that ICS is brand new and that its the biggest rewrite to the OS since its birth but they shouldnt be releasing phones in this state.
If this continues i will be returning my device. I hope the next update brings some majour fixes.
And BTW im 100% stock.
Stock 4.0.2 GSM version have not experienced a single issue you have.
The one thing I can say is this is a developer phone and its just gonna have bugs. Its probably not what you want to hear but that's kinda how it is : /

Yeah i understand that.
When i first read about other people with random reboots and stuff i was like damn that sucks im glad that hasnt happened to me... But alas it has happened along with the other issues mentioned.
I might have to return it but even then they will probably just sen it away for 2 weeks and reflash it.
I just want it to work to its full potential.
As i said i know its the first versions of ICS and i expect a bit of problems until they iron out the creases but the list is just getting longer. Ive only had the phone like a week.
first off... put down ur phone...

look... no android device is perfect... you knew this buying the phone...
android is a work in progress... it is still one of the newest OS's out there.
of course ics has faults... its not near perfect yet... no worries... slowly it is going to get better and better...
look... unlock that bootloader of yours... and install a custom rom
most people and my self are using AOKP, install a custom kernal... Lean kernal and franco kernal are great choices...
custom roms usually preform better than stock...
relax... try it out...
im 100 percent sure this will fix your problems or any doubts u might have.
It sounds to me like the OP should just get rid of the Gnex and buy and iPhone. ICS is new! It will be buggy at first. Each update will bring a more stable and better all around experience. Like Radsolutionz said, unlock the bootloader, install Clockworkmod Recovery, and get to flashing a custom Rom. Most custom Roms are 4.0.3 which works better than 4.0.2. Just be patient my friend. It will get better as Google releases updates to ICS.
Yeah i know i know.
I just hope it gets better soon lolz.
Im trying to keep this one stock as long as possible.
Dont get me wrong im no stranger to flashing roms. I flashed hundreds on my sgs but i just want to keep this one stock for the first few months.
fingers crossed that the next update isnt too far away and this will fix these problems.

I would rather go back to a nokia 3210 then get an iphone!
As i said in the post above im no stranger to flashing roms and kernels and playing with the build props etc but im trying to avoid that for the time being.
I would just like to point out that #1 is not a problem at all, it is a feature all android phones have, when activating a new phone it automaticly syncs everything from the last phone to the new one, if u didn't want that to happen then u shouldn't have checked the box to restore all Google information or whatever the message is when u first setup the phone, should probably delete it...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
#1 is your fault, when you sign into your Google account, it specifically asks you if you want to backup your data (app data, wifi passwords, and other settings) and/or Automatic restore apps and user data.
Don't give him such a hard time he loves his phone. I was disappointed to I also had random stuff happen but now its all settled down and battery life is great. Give the phone time to adjust and delete as many apps as you don't really need. It could be a bad app that's causing the problem.
If you still don't like it sell it and get something else .

i dont know but i just had to reply.
1) When i first got the device home and turned it on It auto downloaded like 50 apps that i had installed on my sgs which i didnt want it to do...
as said by other member, do that. OR go quickly to market > my apps, and press the 'X' to stop all progress. yeah it stops all.
2) when ever i scrolled through the app drawer the first 2 pages was fine but when i scrolled to the 3rd page the launcher would force close every time. A battery pull didnt fix the problem either... Luckily i got an update to 4.0.2 about 30 minutes after the device was on which got rid of that problem...
i'm sure you have this rare problem as others did not but glad it worked out.
3) Now that im on 4.0.2 sometimes when im leaving the app drawer to go back to the homescreen the launcher will freeze for a few seconds between the zoom out transition so i see half of thr app drawer and half of the homescreen. This happens completely random and i cant reproduce it.
same as number 2. if you got a slight lag opening the app drawer, its normal.
4) I have just been looking on the market and my screen just shut itself off... I couldnt turn the phone back on through the power button and i had to long press the power button to turn the phone back on. Basically the phone just died for no reason.
This is very normal in many smartphones. Even iphones have this. Had to do hard reboot for my gf's iphone 4 a few times since she buy it a year ago. so with ICS/Android or whatever still a new OS, its understandable. i dont know what OS you use on your PC/laptop, but if you use Windows, you know this is normal. hehe.
anyway, to my experience, I had this while on SGS2, and Desire while on Beta builds. Never had any trouble with stable builds with Nexus S, Gnex, SGS2, TF, Desire unless I played around with UV/OC. oh and while on AOKP Gnex, i had it once(just remembered now).
I think OP needs to update to 4.0.4. That solved allot of software issues for me. The whole thing with apps installing happens on any android phone if you select the option when setting up.
No no i mean im 99.9% sure i unchecked the box because i didnt want it to download all of my old apps, It downloaded superuser and titanium backup and adfree and all the rest that i didnt want it to lol.
maybe i didnt but im pretty sure i did.
As i said i LOVE this phone and im still happy with it despite these things and have no trouble keeping it for 2 years. Its just a bit dissapointing at the minute with the bugs.
I was just thinking maybe i got one of the "dodgy" devices and would be better of taking it back for a new one.
I will wait for the next update first and see if that fixes the problems.
I dont want to mess flashing custom kernels etc just to mess undoing it all.
by the sounds of it 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 are a big improvement over 4.0.2 so i look forward to get that little you have an update window on my phone
thanks for replies guys. Made me feel a little better
Don't worry, I unchecked the box too and it downloaded everything I had on my Xoom instead of my R2D2 D2. My gnex rebooted randomly and is nowhere near as stable as my Droid 1. And for all of you apologists exclaiming that this is a developer phone, well guess what? 6 weeks in, Googlerola decided "not anymore because CDMA is too hard."
Screw them. I'm going back to a phone that isn't so smart that making calls is beneath it when my contract is up and getting a decent laptop. It's a nice phone when it works but I didn't pay the development community to fix the gross design flaws and production oversights that the people I did give my money to caused to such a device with so much potential. I don't want have to rely on some kid in a basement somewhere to make my $600 phone work. Google/Samsung/Motorola should actually cut these modders a check for cleaning up their messes.

As for 2 and 3, have you ever considered that your phone could be a lemon? I am running stock 4.0.1 and the worst I have experienced was random reboot once a week.
Hey.
I totally get where the OPs coming from. I've got multiple posts on issues I've had. Just some really annoying **** that has really made this a flaky experience. I love this phone just like you man and I'm trying sooo hard not to return it. I've had 3 replacements now and its been like a month. I'm probably just real picky but he's got some points there, why release this if its clearly not ready. I had a 3gs once and I really don't want to go back. The iPhone 4s combined with the latest ios is, and I even can't believe I (me) is saying this but, not toooo bad. I mean, you can actually change your SMS tone now!!! Nice work apple, although other phones have had that option standard for like a billion years! Haha. Anyway, going off track here... yeah dude, I'm not sure if the problems I'm having are just gremlins (which by forums they are) or I have a 4th faulty unit. My other 3 were for the most part probably fine, that's the problem, YOU DONT KNOW!
But by the sounds of it, and I'm sort if happy to hear it is that it is gremlins. I do also want a phone that just f'king works and does what its told. It this phone did that, it would probably be the best phone I've ever owned.

1.) YOU CHOSE to "backup/restore apps to/from Google's servers". It was a check box when setting up the phone.
2.) That is strange, never had this problem. And I didn't make it out the Verizon store w/o the 4.0.2 update so I really was never on anything before that.
3.) I also experience a little lag here and there with 4.0.2. Now that I'm on 4.0.4 I NEVER have a problem with it. Also, install spare parts, set screen transitions and other things like that to "fast" for a little added speed boost.
$.) Nobody likes the sleep of death, fortunately I haven't had this problem. Again, most of my time with this phone I have been on 4.0.4. I highly recommend you upgrade if possible.

So not true. I love my GNex, but the reboot issues are very annoying. And it's not because it's a 'developer phone'. If that's the case they need to stop plastering advertisements in major media outlets and TV commercials saying how great the phone is and instead putting disclaimers that it has annoying problems and 'we'll fix them when we get around to it'.
I love nexus phones and Android and I've stuck by them since the launch of the G1, but they still have problems and making excuses for them using these silly arguments is not how they should be addressed. I seriously hope they did not release this phone to the public knowing about these reboot issues. But it seems that way. Either that or the QA process is badly broken.

I don't understand all the "it's a developer phone" posts.
It is marketed as consumer device and for me, it's a very good consumer phone.
I may be totally lucky, but I never had a single issue with this phone so far.
My Desire HD used to have issues like freezes, gps problems etc. The GNEX does not. At least for me...
I agree that an Iphone is even a little more polished. But that doesn't mean you need to be an android developer or cook custom roms every day to like the GNEX.

Alright, so my girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S II started to go through these weird partial reboots several weeks ago (maybe even months). The phone would randomly go black, play the stupid shutdown/startup (dont remember which) jingle...then just simply be at the lock screen with a crossed out circle where the signal bars would be (for just a couple of seconds). When this happened, I used to just tell her to shutdown the phone, take out the battery, and let it sit for about 30 seconds, then put everything back together and start it back up. This seemed to work, which made me think it might have just been a software or at worst a memory issue of some kind.
This issue was always intermittent, but now, no matter what I do, it just keeps looping this "restarting" problem. I can't access any internal memory space from my computer because in the time it takes to connect, it just "reboots" again. I made a logcat of the phone up until the "reboot", and in doing so noticed that when I would browse the phone via adb shell, I saw no mount for the sd card...which then lead me to believe maybe it was an issue with that. I checked the sd card for corruption (and prior to even using it, checked that all blocks were read/writable (legit)), but that led nowhere.
Anyways, not having any idea where to go next, nor where to begin or what to look for in the 5000+ lined logcat, I turn to xda with hopes of getting some sort of help. Thanks in advance for any I get!
EDIT: Oops, some other important notes I didn't mention (other than in title); this is running stock firmware, only OTA. I tried once to upgrade her to ICS via Kies, but the upgrade would never complete. She also refused to let me root her phone...so unless there is a stock recovery mode, her phone has none...
bump, as its been a week and no responses. If anyone has any ideas or can figure out whats wrong from the logcat, please help.
Almost 3 weeks...no answer...isn't there at least 1 person who has an idea or can deduce one from the logcat? Pretty soon I'm gonna have to tell her to give up and get it "fixed" (ie, swapped for a refurb with most likely all her data lost)...

Looking at the logcat if it is accurate the problem is overheating and it is shutting itself down. That's why it keeps rebooting from I read but I could be wrong. Also looks like it has wakelock issues. Lot of wakelock errors in logcat. Some app or apps are causing the wakelock issue find them and remove them that might solve the problem.

i say try to odin back her phone to stock on here there a good post for it to get her back and if she had Gmail sync there shouldnt be a problem unless she really dont want to download everything again i say give odin a shot and then from there upgrade through kies its tricky you have to make sure you have 50% battery life or more and kies errrors out sometimes but it does work i update my friends phone as he does not like all the root stuff lol so i always your kies after a couple errors it will work and thats your best option if she doesnt want to loose anything kies will back it all up for her and are you sure that power button aint sticking sounds like you have a looping issue are you able to go into download mode or are you familiar with this ?
Idk how to read logcats but another idea could be you have the sticky power button issue. I think if it was overheating u would feel it and mention it in the op.

For starters, thanks everyone for the responses! After this long, its really great to see so many in one day!

Thats what I thought, because it seemed to get exceptionally hot before "rebooting"...at first...then I was noticing it "rebooting" when clearly cold. If it is indeed overheating like I had thought in the very beginning, is there anything I can do about it? What does it use for heat conductivity and displacement? And for that matter, I would think if it was overheating though, it would actually reboot, not the half-ass semi-reboot its been doing...
And what is wakelock exactly that it would cause an issue? Only apps I see using it are WootWatcher, KeyguardViewMediator and PowerManagerService.

i say try to odin back her phone to stock on here there a good post for it to get her back and if she had Gmail sync there shouldnt be a problem unless she really dont want to download everything again i say give odin a shot and then from there upgrade through kies its tricky you have to make sure you have 50% battery life or more and kies errrors out sometimes but it does work i update my friends phone as he does not like all the root stuff lol so i always your kies after a couple errors it will work and thats your best option if she doesnt want to loose anything kies will back it all up for her and are you sure that power button aint sticking sounds like you have a looping issue are you able to go into download mode or are you familiar with this ?

I would use odin...but the phone doesn't stay on long enough to do much of anything before "rebooting". Also, she is already using stock firmware + OTA updates. And her contacts are not what I am worried about, its her photos and such. This is the very reason why I hate internal memory for phones...
And I'm pretty sure its not a sticky power button, I had seen that being a common issue when researching before posting. And again, if I have not been clear, its not exactly "rebooting", just semi-rebooting; phone starts up, crap starts running, a min or 2 later, phone acts like its restarting (plays sound and all), then just comes back to the lock screen immediately...I can't really describe it much more than that.
And no, I'm not familiar with "download mode"

Idk how to read logcats but another idea could be you have the sticky power button issue. I think if it was overheating u would feel it and mention it in the op.

Ya, like I said in the reply above this, I don't think its the sticky power button problem...but I could always be wrong. I only didn't mention over heating because I felt I did a good job of ruling it out.

Its running GB atm, never updated to ICS via Kies...
I wish I could help you further but i can say one thing, the rebooting that your describing is called a "hot reboot". I know what ur talking about and others will too if u use that term. Good luck.

So my first N7 had dead pixels and when I returned it I had to open 3 others in store to find one that was perfect. Or seemingly perfect. Twice now I've woken up to find my N7 off. The first time it happened I thought maybe I turned it off but last night I know I left it on. I did some searching and found that I am not the only one with this issue, but I haven't found any recent threads about it or any known fixes. Now I'm still on 4.3 and really don't want to update to 4.4 but if this bug was addressed I'll update it. Anyone here have this issue, found a fix, or updated and had the issue disappear? I really don't want to exchange it yet again but I will if it's the only way to get one that doesn't do it. Any insight would be appreciated.

Why don't you want to update to 4.4.2? It might solve the problem.
Anyway, the only device I had that had random reboots was my Nokia Lumia 520 which I straight away replaced.
I would advise you to do it aswell incase 4.4.2 doesn't fixe it.

I don't like the way 4.4 looks. I am a big fan of the blue/holo theme of 4.3. I have 4.4 on my N5 and that's enough for me. 4.4 really doesn't bring much to the table (for me anyway) that would compel me to update.
My N7 isn't rebooting, it's turning off. Never had a device that did that before. I'll probably update just to see if it stops it, and plus I have some bad stuttering when watching embedded videos in chrome and from what I've read, 4.4 solves that too. I really don't want to have to exchange it again, and I'm sure the manager at Best Buy doesn't want me to either lol.

Obvious question here but have you tried a factory reset?

I'm going to tomorrow if it does it again tonight. But the tablet is only a few days old and I already did a factory reset before I set it up initially.
Ok it just did it again right in front of my face. It didn't just go black in the middle of use, I picked it up to use it and before I could do anything it powered down, but did so as if I had deliberately done it. Meaning, the Power Off pop up was on the screen and it said "shutting off" the same way it does when you turn it off manually. That would lead me to believe it would be a software bug as opposed to a hardware one... am I correct in that assumption? Or can some hardware defect actually trigger the normal power down sequence?
