There are a number of factors that can affect your data speeds obviously, but imo SpeedTest.net is not exactly a reliable way to measure. I think its fine when using to test one setup vs the next on your phone, but I can get significantly different results from one moment to the next, from different locations, from different servers, etc.
i.e. I get crap speed on a server 40mi away but get pretty decent speed on one over 300mi away.
I also notice most times that even when I get bad test speeds, my downloads and browsing are usually still fair to great.
There are other, better sites you can use for testing. I cant remember right off hand but there is a post in my modem thread with some listed. Ill try to remember to check it in a bit and will post some here for you.
There are also some other tweaks that can help, such as these in build.prop:
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
ro.ril.gprsclass=12 (or 32, 34, 36)
I have plans to post a lot more info about this in that thread. Just gotta get my computer back up and get a little more organized!
Hope this helps some of you for the time being!

Ok so not as abnormal as I thought. But Sprint needs to step their game up. Even if they lag behind on LTE and least get us some more "4G" coverage. This consistent >1 mbps nonsense is tempting me to switch, even if I will lose unlimited data.

You all are blazing fast compared to my crap area...
in the Dallas metro area i have had on the low side 1.5 megs down and on the high side 12 megs down. But on average 4-6megs down. Usually 1meg to 1.5 megs up..
I average 8Mbps down and 2Mbps up in Portland although 4G is spotty most of the time.
On 4G I usually get between 5 and 10 Mbps. And Sprint doesn't even have full 4G here in Detroit. I think that's pretty good speeds.

I just thought I'd let you guys Sprint has started upgrading the towers to Network vision here in Los Angeles.. The past two days my service has been down (obviously needed). Larry from the howard forums commented saying Sprint has started upgrading the towers in the Los Angeles market.. If you notice little to no signal you know why! I have already noticed a jump in speed from 40kbps to 1000kbps.
larryt510 said:
They have begun work on network vision here in the LA market (including those zips you listed). Only a handful of sites have been completed so far but more will be coming soon. I do not believe it would cause any long term outages though as the sites are normally taken off line (if necessary) at a time when there's the least impact on the users.

Cause there is currently no LTE service in my area (Falls Church, VA).

Well it'd be a long shot and spotty at best. Sprint hasn't officially launched a single LTE market afaik.

Hell for all we know Sprint has blocked us from connecting to LTE even if it is out there until it's fully rolled out.

They only use half the spectrum of what Verizon has deployed so the downlink should be peaking at about 37mbps on Sprint's unloaded LTE. And since there is really no one on the network, you should be able to see those speeds if the network is properly configured.
Post some screenshots from speedtest.app.

By default on Sprint phones the bars only indicate VOICE coverage. They have nothing to do with 3G EVDO or 4G LTE reception. I have aseen a few custom ROMs that split the bars into two for voice and data, but the regular software doesn't make this distinction.
There is a chance you could be connected to one tower for voice but evdo is down on it so you are using a different tower for data, and an even higher likelihood with LTE since most towers haven't been upgraded yet.
Top one is from this evening in New Braunfels. Nice.

I do on occasion, but its because our 3G network is over loaded. they have us set to get LTE @ some point. its all based on how hard your tower is being hit and very little to due with your phone or sprint as a whole.

Yes! I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the software upgrade. My data used to be blazing fast. Now I can be stuck with 100-200 for download

Mine are far better than they were on my 3D. Plus I get LTE now at work, love it.

My data speeds are better than they were on my E4GT. We are still on 3G here.

Maybe Sprint is upgrading the towers there. I heard the speeds get slow while the work is under way...
New LTE towers in Austin installed this month. Lays just say I'm not complaining.

Doesn't this phone not have EVDO but SVDO or something of nature? When it comes to 3G it all depends on your location to pick up SVDO speeds. During speedtests in my area, with full bars, I'll get 1.2mbps down but most of the time I struggle to hit 1. In my girlfriends neighborhood...it is constantly 2-3mbps down. I would imagine because her 3G towers are upgraded already? The only reason it doesn't bother me is because I actually have 4G LTE most of the time in my house and whenever I go outside or down the street etc.
Data speed is awful here....even close to the tower.
When I upgraded to the Note 2 they took away my discount. Now I have crappy data AND a higher bill. We aren't supposed to get LTE until end of 2013 in St. Louis. I really don't think we will get in the small town I live in at all. So, I think I am taking this back and switch to AT&T. What good is unlimited data if its so slow that I cant use it. At&t us the only option. T mobile and vzw have no coverage here. Sprint was of no help including the retentions department. BYE SPRINT

That would be awesome for me. I easily hit under 100 at work with full signal.

Switched towers in the speed test app. Forgot to screen shot the original test. Once I get to work tomorrow morning, ill redo the test and screen shoot it. Test was performed at home for this thread. There are two Sprint 4g w/LTE towers in the process of going live in my area (Lincoln Park, MI). Till Sprint gets on the ball with better service around here, will just have to put up with things. My phone was doing going whacko w/roaming m and "preparing network" mesgs. As I typed this, got a preparing network mesg. Again, people with patience are needed while on Sprint's service..lool.

What you're speaking of is eHPRD that's the high speed 3g you're seeing, if you're getting that, chances are LTE is nearby or being turned on soon

Here's the new test while at my work. As you see huge difference then when at home. Thats due to being much closer to the tower.
