[Q] Rooting, Rom, and Kernal Questions - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just rooted my S3 a few minutes ago, and I'm really new to all of this. I'd really like to not brick my phone so I'm going to play it safe.
As far as ROM's go, if you install a custom ROM how do you go back to stock? Also, if you want to install a new ROM and you have a custom one installed, what do you do to insure that you won't install the ROM over the one you have?
What do kernels do? And how do you install/flash them?

YouTube QBKing77 channel for the Sprint galaxy s3. He has great instructional videos.

Between his videos and thorough reading, I was able to pick up rooting and flashing back on my Samsung Epic 4G.

Use qbkings videos
But to go back to stock you would flash a backup you made before every Rom flash and to keep things nice and clean you always clear data and cache

Alright, so in order to restore stock I'd have to backup my phone in CWM, then restore it later for stock?

Does it need to be restored to stock in order for the 4.1.1 update to install correctly?

Yes... But there are going to be like 5 or 6 custom roms that are all going to be JB based, most will have even more features than "stock"... So, I suggest and invite you into the development threads...

If you wanted stock jelly bean when it comes out, yes you'll need stock recovery to install a ota update. But if you decide to run a custom rom, then the developer should update it to 4.1.1 soon after the official ota comes out.
Or the developer may update their rom to a leaked version of 4.1.1.
Either way there is always a way to get back to stock outta the box via Odin and go about updating the long way, unless you hard brick your phone.

If you want stock jb when It comes out you can just flash a Rom that is stock jellybean or a super customized version either way

Will flashing CWM recovery affect getting an OTA?

My understanding is that recovery stays in a separate partition and whatever you do to it does not affect getting an OTA, is that right?
Also, what if my phone is rooted using the Zerg exploit or whatever method, can I still get an OTA?
So basically I think my questions is, what ultimately decides whether my phone can get an OTA, or not?
if you are on stock ROM, you will get it just fine
but you might loose ROOT after it finish the upgrade
if you are on Custom ROM, you wont get OTA
You can get the ota even on a custom ROM. As long as you have the stock recovery.

How would you have a custom ROM with stock recovery? I've never rooted a Samsung phone since this is my first and I'm waiting to root it, so unless Samsung is different I don't see how.

I'm sure within a couple days there will be a custom rom with the new features. that's an assumption but its always been like that on other phones I have had. Hopefully that's the case with this phone also.
I have stock rooted ROM with CWM recovery, is that okay? Or do I have to have a stock recovery?

you will get the notification for the ota, your phone will download it but when it boots into recovery to flash it and its not the stock recovery, it will just give an error and you will probably have to pull the battery to reboot. i did this on the nexus s. if i remember right i never got the ota notififcation again either after it failed.
I know there are methods out there that can flash the entire phone back to stock (kernel, ROM, recovery) but that involves wiping everything. Is there a way to flash back the stock recovery only since I'm already on stock ROM and kernel?
Big thanks...
I wonder where it puts the update after it downloads it. Would be nice to grab it and maybe install without reverting to stock...

There is a stock recovery posted in the dev section you can flash in Odin

Found that and it works. Thanks!
you can keep your phone more up to date by flashing roms as opposed to waiting for an OTA. galaxy s4g is still stuck on froyo. Epic 4g just got gingerbread.

What is the update supposed to do or fix?

[Q] Can I do the maintenance update with different kernel?

Hopefully it's not a dumb question but I can't find the answer anywhere else.
I have a rooted phone w/ CWM and faux's kernel.
No 3rd party ROM installed.
I got the update today. Can I install the update with the kernel or will that do bad things to my phone?
Do I have to go back to a stock kernel and recovery to do that update or is going back to a stock kernel good enough?
I don't mind losing root, I can always reroot it. I just don't want to do something stupid to my phone.

Thanks, another possibly stupid question.
Is there only one stock recovery or are there different versions between the UVKL1 and UVKID recovery?
Will this recovery work with my UVKL1 phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319830
It's the same. To prevent having issues, I recommend doing a factory reset before flashing back to stock.
Just back up whatever you don't want erased. You don't have to worry about the external sd, the reset won't touch that.

Can you flash a different kernel after installing the latest update? Yes. Should you if you want a flawless ICS update this Monday and possibly avoid a brick? Probably not. Up to you.
Simply put, NO. As mentioned above Odin fully back to unrooted stock for he update to flash properly. Otherwise you'll have a soft brick on your hands.

Also, if you're on ICS right now, you may get boot loops after flashing back to stock. Just do a factory reset in recovery and you're good to go.

That looks fine. If you're on ICS and reboot after wiping to get into download mode, some apps will automatically install on first boot so you will get boot loops after you flash back to stock. That's fine if you do, just do a factory reset in recovery.

Just as a follow up to my own thread.
I followed this guide to go back to stock and then did the maintenance update.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/16727-howto-restore-stock-rom-recover-bad-flashes/
I backed up everything just in case but I didn't lose any data and it took about 10 minutes to do everything.
I'm just going to run stock until I get ICS and then reroot again.

MA6

Dont know if im overlooking but dont see it...just wondering if I can still flash these new ROMS(MA6) im on lj7. If I can't wgat are the proper steps start to finish? Thanks a lot

You can flash anything you want. Are you looking for stock or custom? Everything you need is in the dev section. If you've never flashed before my suggestion is to read, read, read, and then read some more. If you get stuck or don't understand something, come back and ask and you will get some help.
As metalfan78 stated, Just read everything to a T and you should be fine. And seriously take this note.
NEVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH AN INTERNATIONAL VERSION OF A ROM.
Stay in the section of what your phones' carrier is.
So if its ma6 ROM and no instruction. ..just flash like normal?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yep, normal flashing procedures. And as spark said, stay in our section. There has been a lot of threads started lately about flashing a rom for a different model, which I don't understand at all.
Thanks!!! But why does one of Freeza's roms have so many instructions and zips to download for this update?...so confusing
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
So I should probly first flash a stock recovery then flash the ma6 firmware zip?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
everyone posts an instruction and a how to-to flash their roms, it's the same method used to flash any other rom.
Wipe Data and Factory reset, Wipe Cache, and wipe dalvik cache. then flash the rom.
NOTE: Make sure you backup your apps and data using titanium backup if your keeping your applications.
and since your on LJ7 thinking about going to MA6. I'd suggest reading sxtapes' instructions to install.
you can either do the flashing updates from LJ7 to MA6 or choose whether to fully flash and install
the rom Odex and De-Odexed ( NOTE: the rom itself is just the rom, you'll need to flash a seperate file
for the modem firmware and baseband and the kernel! otherwise look @ the bottom of the OP and do the update LJ7 to MA6 ).
His post can be found in the android developement section. Thank him and his team + sources for bringing out the MA6
I used billard412's method. Which flashes everything, it's stock unrooted, but all files are there to flash recovery and root again, before booting the phone. Hang on, I'll get the link.

---------- Post added at 06:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:53 AM ----------
If you choose to use freeza's method, then flash the MA6 odex or deodex rom, and flash his all-in-one firmware file before rebooting.
Did you get everything figured out?
Also use qbking's videos.

Just checking, you know titanium backup can save all your apps and data? Flashing a kernel, then flashing stock back over it isn't exactly a fresh start and may leave you with the odd strange issue. Or not.
Still I'd recommend backing up your stuff and wiping everything, especially the system partition and doing a clean install.
That's what I would do anyway. Just my opinion tho.
