There are volume widgets that can be placed on the home screen for controlling the volume of your device.

I think he meant the volume buttons on some cheap tablets that is integrated in the status bar. A plus (+) and a minus (-) button beside the clock and all.. It is not an app but is included in some chinese roms.

There are two ways you can achieve this:-
Option 1 ~ Download a Volume Control app (Volume Ace for eg) and place it as a folder with other icons in your Docked icons (what I mean here is drop more than one icon in the same place as one of your Docked icons to create a docked folder icon.
Option 2 ~ Download Elixer2 and create a Notification icon whereby every time you pull down the notification window you will then see a volume icon displayed. Simply tap this and it releases a pop-up window where you can control all 6 aspects of volume on your Nexus 7.

Or you could try this.....

Audio Control had full Jelly Bean support
Audio Control is my favorite volume management app. I've tried them all and nothing compares. Plus there is full support for Jelly Bean included.

My favourite is Volume Control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.VolumeControl
Control volume from every app.
Place the thin volume indicator e.g. at the top center border.
With Android 4.2 you then have 3 menus when swiping across the notification bar.

I use Settings Extended, it does add the controls to the left hand notification panel though. I turn off all the un-needed controls that are now duplicated in the 4.2 settings drop down and just leave the volumes one. Its good because it lists more volume sliders than the stock volume control.

Someone told me a while ago about a button on the right hand side of the nexus.
Pressing up turns the volume up, and down turns it down.
I never would have spotted it if I hadn't have been told.
I've been using it loads since.

I think they are just scared it might wear off, just like what happen to my lg optimus one.

If you are using landscape mode most of the time (I am), it becomes annoying to try and reach. I do use a case though, so the buttons are harder to push.

Another option I use is 'Control Panel for Android'.
It gives you immediate control over a number of items including all the different Volume Levels.
To control the Volume level for say Ringer simply slide down the notification panel and tap on the Volume icon. It will then bring up a transparent showing all 6 different volume levels. Pick the Ringer and slide the volume down to the required level.
It truly is a great app. You can control a number of different things all by one touch ~ Wifi, Bluetooth, Sound, Vibrate, Auto Rotation, Mobile Data, Airplane Mode, Sound Effects, Haptic Feedback, Dial Tone, Auto-Time, Ringtone, Volume, Ring-Mode, Brightness, Screen Timeout, Screen Stay On and the main Control Panel

I should of added in my post Control Panel for Android is also mentioned by the author here in xda-devs.
Worth looking at the comments as well.

[Mod request] volume buttons also change tracks

So I ride a motorcycle everyday to work and stuff and I listen to my phones music on my ride but I have normal headset with isolation features that stay in my ear tor the windy ride but when its on shuffle and a song I don't want to listen comes on I have to bear with it and listen to it.
My request is this. Is it possible to mod the volume keys to also change the track of the htc sense music app or android app.
In essence it would have 4 options
Press volume up key - changes volume by 1 click
Hold volume up key - changes to next track
Press volume down key - changes volume by 1 click
Hold volume down key - brings track back/ plays previous track
I think this would be awesome to eliminate the need of taking out the phone out of your pocket to fo this when u can press the buttons through your jeans.
Ya feel me!

CyanogenMod 6 already has this feature.
Not everyone runs CM... I had it for weeks but switched back to sense later on. Would love to have this feature on sense based roms
so is there anyway to have this on fresh rom perhaps or any sense rom?
Can this be done on miui e

[REQUEST/SUGGESTION] Volume key profiles.

Something I miss from Sense, is the ability to on the volume keys, lower to silence, and then if you lower a little more, you can put the phone into vibrate.
Don't know if this is native to Android or Sense, but it would be a little thing, but pretty awesome to have.
Check out volume control +. It's an app that does some sweet stuff like that. It can also sync your notification and ringer volume sobyou don't have to adjust them separately. Why that's not built in I have no idea.

[Q] Question about volume control and the Kindle app!

I have a Kindle Fire with Android 4.2.2.
I am wondering if there is a volume widget that controls ALL of the volume controls with one slider? I downloaded one widget but it had 6 different sliders, I just want one that controls volume for everything.
Also, I have the kindle app installed, and there are no covers showing on my PDF files. On my iPhone the kindle app displays covers for PDF files just fine, what can I do to fix this?

Volume control (Pro)
I can't link it because I don't have 10 posts. If you see this in the URL you've got the right one. id=rubberbigpepper.VolumeControlPro
It has many options for the way it's displayed. The picture doesn't do it justice. You can control the main volume of your device with one small slider that can be on the screen at all times, and you can even pick the size, color, and position of the volume slider. It's the best one I tried for Kindle.

I second this app. I tried quite a few different apps/widgets before finding this one and loving it. I use the free version and it's great. The volume slider you get is easy to use, and you can control the positioning/size/transparency/etc as Scoobio said.

On screen buttons

Is it possible to have on screen buttons like nexus 5, and disable current below screen buttons (home, menu, back)?
I think you can do it natively under Accessability options.....not sure where though, saw a youtube video on it

Why would you want to use screen space for navigation buttons when there is space allotted for them on the device already? I'm just curious, as one of my main reasons for switching from GN5 to Note 3 was to not use screen space for nav buttons.
Coming from a Gnex and Nexus 10, I do find it annoying that the hardware back-button on the Note ends up being out of place when I rotate my phone for YouTube etc. Clearly not a big deal, but I would prefer software buttons in those situations.
I'm also not a fan of the hardware menu button. Some apps have a menu and some don't. I'd rather have the app show the button when it's relevant than tap it to see if anything pops up.

Pixel 2 Pulldown Menu

I just switched to the Pixel 2 XL from Samsung and the pulldown menu is lacking a ton of settings. There isn't even the little speaker icon that switches from sound to vibrate to silent. Is that just the way stock Android is? Did Samsung add all those convenient menu features? Anyway to add more?
Pull the menu down twice, there is a little pencil icon at the bottom, between the date and the settings icon. You can add, remove, rearrange. If you want something that's not available you can usually get it with an app...if nothing else, you can create them with Tasker to do pretty much anything.
Thanks. Now to get used to this screen! (or not)
For the whole vibrate or silent thing... There's a volume rocker on the side of the phone...
