I've been reading this forum for the past two days trying to see if there is a similar thread with this issue. Please point me in the right direction if there is a similar thread resolving this issue (this forum is colossal!).
I recently bought a UK version GSM Galaxy Nexus running Modaco 4.0.2 Ir8. I'm using it on T-Mobile's network (The GN is replacing my HTC Sensation).
The gentleman that sold it to me had already unlocked, rooted, and flashed it with Modaco. It works blazing fast. The only thing is that when ever I make a phone call it literally drops in less than 5 minutes. The signal seems to be switching like crazy from 3G to HSPA+ as well.
I've called TMO and they have no clue what the issue is (4 different reps told me 4 different things from needing to factory reset to the towers being down etc.).
Again the phone works great besides the fact that I can't make a phone call for more than a couple of minutes before it drops.
Has anyone seen this with their GN? Is it the phone? The Mod? Are T-Mobile's towers not able to pick up this phone's radios because it's from the UK?
How can I go about fixing this (Factory reset? etc.)? I'm literally about to factory reset this thing this morning when I get home from work.
I don't really have too much experience as far as rooting goes but willing to learn and get this issue resolved.
What radio version are you using?
I'm on T-Mobile and xxkk6 works well for me.
If you don't know what you have, I suggest u go to the dev section and start reading for a while
xxkk6 at the least should be on there. i think there is xxkl7 possibly. the xxkk6 is the stock radio, but if there is a kk7 or kl7 might want to try that as it would be a later version.
How can I tell which radio version I'm on and does it give me the option to switch it?

I had similar problems until I switched to KK6.
This thread has all the different basebands:

Thanks for sending me that link. Which baseband set up would be good for the US (NYC specifically). They all look like they are designed for European areas.
And once I put in my Sim card, why didn't the phone just figure out with Radioband to attach itself to?

Basebands beginning with UG are for north America. I think there are a couple of threads in the dev section about UG basebands, it might be worth have a look at those.

Thanks for the link. After reading through a couple of pages I'm starting to realize that I have no idea what the hell is going on with switching radio bands. Even worse, I have not read about any instances where one or the other will work very well in NYC (my area).
Is there a grid which shows which radio band is for which area? Anyone know of anywhere that shows the step by way to do this?

I appreciate that. Will be looking into it later this morning when I get off work.
For anyone who had to do this process: Is this a normal thing when rooting and flashing, to have to find a better baseband etc.? Is it because my phone is a UK version that TMO is having an issue dropping my calls?
And lastly, anyone know what the best baseband/radio is suitable for NYC? And why doesn't the phone just figure out which is the best baseband?

the baseband should work. it's gsm, the world standard. but i'm guessing since i don't know exactly what is tweaked, but that the specific baseband for your region will bias your phone for the known networks. ugkk7 works great for me. atnt. i think there is a ugkl6 or 7. sometimes you have to test them. some will work better for others. some will work great and not eat battery. if it eats battery, try another one. i think samsung is decent about releasing different radios for different regions. it can be confusing. now when it's comes to updating their roms, that is a different story.
Ok,
The baseband def has to be affecting my battery. I'm getting not even 10 hours on a full charge from moderate use.
I don't really know exactly what the first owner did to it, only what he told me.
My plan is to bring it back to factory settings (found an article about how to restore the GSM version, but have yet to find any youtube videos abou it....I only see LTE videos on rooting and unrooting, and I'm not sure if it's the same process so I'm not touching those).
If that doesn't help it then I'll go about flashing and changing the baseband.
Again this whole baseband business is really new to me. The input you guys have been giving so far is much appreciated.

Update:
Ended up coming home early from work and staying up all morning trying to figure this out. I decided on using this link first: (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/restore-galaxy-nexus-to-stock-how-to/)
to re-lock. That took about 4 hours of troubleshooting and getting to know the lingo and terminology. Then from a combination of other youtube videos I spent another 4 hours trying to figure out how to lock the bootloader. Believe it or not the Xda link about this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) saved me from losing my mind. I literally didn't go to sleep until I made sure I brought the phone back to factory settings.
After I finally got the phone back to factory settings (believe me, it wasn't fun figuring this out especially when I've never rooted before) I noticed the wifi wasn't working, or had a very weak signal. Content with the phone at least being back on factory settings and locked, I go to sleep and wake up today seeing the same issue with the wifi (mean while, I now have good signal/service...didn't even have to mess with the baseband radio config).
I restart the router in our house and power down the phone and restart. Problem fixed.
Not really sure why or how, but bringing the phone back to factory settings seems to make it work just as fast as it worked when Modaco Ir8 4.0.2 was on it. Except now I have amazing Service signal.
I can honestly state that rooting really isn't for me especially with the notion that with every new mod that comes out you have to be flashing on a constant basis. Even though I almost lost my mind trying to figure this out, I would still rather have this approach vs Apple's walled garden approach though. Any day.
One of the reasons I like the Nexus line of phones is that it's pretty much the only Android phone that gets all the updates first and on a constant basis. Which makes it such an awesome phone in that it's also the phone that Google allows any and all capabilities to be customized. I have true respect for all the devs out there who attack this stuff daily.
Just be sure to get enough exercise in and healthy meals along with rest lol.

some people actually recommend factory resetting your device from the get go. i would, but i always just run with the hardware just to make sure the hardware and stress i throw at it will handle all the roms and stuff. and to exchange my phone if finding there is a problem.
Good to hear that you got it sorted out in the end

Rooting/Flashing is great IMO for people who will never have the luxury of getting updates like Nexus phones get. Take control in your own hands on when you decide you want to update(s) etc.
I'm sure any Devs out there (like on this forum) also love tinkering. To each his own.

Indeed. I def learned a lesson: Never let anyone ever root your phone for you. The guy who rooted it for me was nice enough to say I could email him for questions but the more I kept emailing him the more I could tell he was probably getting frustrated at all my worrisome questions ("I'm dropping calls", "Is it because of the rooting?", "My wifi isn't working", "is it because of the rooting?..." etc.).
Just glad to know there are tons of available options for one to seek out help when issues like this arise.

Did not see any previous treads that mentioned this condition.
Its been going on for a while since I started flashing ICS. Three different builds by different Dev's and I get the same results Slow download speed and CRAZY fast upload speeds, with good 3G and 4G connections, I live in a metro area with tons of anteneas and towers around me. Using control Epic (Wifey's stock Epic) on same networks while running speedtest at the same time on both Epics.
I still get data, but its butt slow while stock Epic just wizzes along with Youtube, play store, Emails, whatever it is concerning data. This time around WiFi is not affected that works fine on both phones, streaming, downloading, both are equal. On on build i had reverse WiFi speeds also, but not this time.
Anyone come across this BUG??? Currently running Calk's E4GT 2 v1.2, FC18 Modem, ICS 4 ICS theme. Great looks fast Rom everything works, (kinda)
Rouge recovery.
When I revert back to stock/rooted EL29 all is normal again. Fast D/L - slow U/L.
Pp.:confused
PS. Second time around with this question.
Common where are those android brains, is this stumping you guys!!!
Give it your best shot, I'll consider any idea or suggestion. Don't just look , post.!!
try changing your modem?
Will try fc22 see how that works. maybe reflash rom too.
did it work?
No. Still the same. Luckely I'm around WiFi most of the time. On FC22 modem. Now.

I'm having the same problem. I'm also in a metro area (NYC). Fast data on stock/gingerbread ROMs. Slow data on any ICS roms. and i mean slooooooow.
I've flashed multiple ROMS, kernals and modems, no avail.
I actually get decent speeds in Manhattan (but not stellar) but in Brooklyn (a mere 12 miles away) i get .10 Mb speeds, no exaggeration. I find it hard to believe that someone is going to tell me that Brooklyn won't have the towers i need for decent data.
Wifi works perfectly on both ICS and GB.
We can't be the only two having this problem. I've googled it and searched the forum but I can't find an answer. Could it be that ICS isn't officially out for the e4gt yet so the ROMs are having flakey service?
Please help, anyone.
On a side note thought, the ROMs that I have tried have no other major issues for me. great job to those who developed them!

My signal strength is jumping around like crazy...from -106dBm then back up to -64dBm...and everything in between, in a matter of seconds. This has been happening since FD24.
I have been using Sfhub's stock rooted nodata roms. I tried the FD02 kernel repack with rougue recovery on FD26 rom & modem, and it seemed to jump around alot less.
Could the kernels be the issue? Or the modem? or the Rom itself?
Update for FF02:
FF02 seems to be better for now...will do some tests later. I had it jump around only once yesterday.
Try throwing your phone at the wall, fixed mine

If it is jumping fro -106 to -64 and back, it is probably scanning because it lost signal. When you first boot your phone, often it exhibits the same scanning behavior.

That's what I figured...and that fact is absolutely murdering my battery life.
You think a data reset will help?
I wouldn't say there is a great chance, but the possibility exists.
The "cleanest" install possible is the following:
1) install Full ODIN OneClick
2) remove external sdcard, if any
3) from android, format internal sdcard
4) from android, perform ##786# reset (providing your MSL, which can be retrieved via "getprop ril.MSL" from terminal or adb shell)
If you format your sdcard, make sure you move your backups to your PC or other external storage.
What does the ##786# reset do exactly?
Rinzler said:

It resets NVRAM as well as your Android user data.
You dial ##786# in the dialer on a stock rom.
It will reset stuff like your phone #, your data login, and other values stored in nvram.
It will cause your phone to perform hands free activation at the next boot, which will populate that information again as well as update profile and prl.
Hands free activation only works on Sprint's native network so don't do it in a place where you can't reliably get signal.

happened to me right after i flashed fe07 modem. i moved back to fd26 to see if its the towers or modem. all seems fine, but i will be keeping an eye over the next day.
FE07 had absolutely abysmal 3G data speeds. It took so long to download the Facebook app update that I immediately flashed an older modem to check against it - FC24 runs like a CHAMP.
I tested fe07 for a day or so. I didn't notice much other than it would drop to 1x often. I ran a speed test 3/4g between fd26 and fe07. Fd26 clearly performed better for me. I went back.

I got the "you roamed too much call" yesterday. I don't force roam ever because I'm in FL and force roam doesn't work here with sammy phones.
I was running several of the recent modems last month and used 5GB of data roaming. Almost 100% of my data. Was the first and only month this has ever happened....in 8-9 years. I reverted back to older modem and roaming stopped. This was on top of the fact that I keep wifi on at all tines at home because my house is a dead spot. I also have an air rave (whatever its called).
I only listen to music, email and surf web. Quite surprised by the call.
I explained to rep that I only go to work and home. That for whatever reason home and work are dead zones. Of course he checks and tells me coverage is great in my city. Then he says sprint can boot me, or I can ask to switch for free. Told him I didn't want either. His solution was for me to put setting for roaming sprint only. I asked him how I would use my phone if I only roamed sprint? No answer.
Very frustrating since I wasn't force roaming, have 6 lines and can't afford other carrier and I actually like sprint.
Sent from home How do I turn my phone on?
My phone came with El29, and after seeing loss of signal often I started experimenting with modems. Tried fd19, fd24, fd26, and fe07, and I still get bouts of loss signal. It's not an issue of bad reception, because my OG epic has no signal problems.
Hows the signal on FE10?
Hi,
I am in need of a few answers. I searched everywhere and did not see anything directly relating to this specific issue. Similar but not specific.
I have a Sprint Epic 4g touch currently flashed to boost mobile for service. I was hesitant to root but I took the plunge and did some research as to the safest way to do so without breaking my phone or its settings.
Now that that is done, I want to take another plunge and tweak this phone to get the best possible setup. I live in South Carolina and the sprint coverage here is craptastic so maybe there isnt much i can do get better signal strength and faster data. But I at least want to get a rom that is compatible with my situation (boost flashed sprint phone)
I took a chance and started flashing different modems and prls none of which helped with signal or data. But none of them gave me any real problems other than one modem which gave me an error 16 when attempting to use Boost 411. <------ I love boost 411 so i went back to the default modem of FF18 and that fixed my error 16.
Sorry rambling none of that is my issue. The phone works perfect. I am asking some of the more experienced users who have took the plunge did the flashing and reported the problems or successes if they have any good suggestions for roms that I can flash that will tweak my phone to get the most out of it on boost mobile. APK suggestions are so welcome. Phone settings or mods that can help me really make this thing better even on boosts crappy service. Not complaining I know I am getting what I pay for. CHEAP. But cheap doesnt always have to mean crappy. So any help or suggestions would be so wonderful
THANK-YOU

Hi, I have a galaxy S3 with T-mobile. I'm in a place where I have excellent 4G speeds (about 5-6 Mbps :speedtest), I noticed that when I'm on a call the 4G data speed drops to useless speeds. I can barely open a website or download an app. Speedtest shows like 500+ ping and about 500kbps download which is NOT constant (goes up, stops, goes down, etc). Real speed is way less than that. Websites don't open or take forever.. Is this normal? I am using stock rom (but also happened with other roms). I went back to stock thinking that this was a problem with other roms only, but the same thing happen with stock rom. Any ideas/clues/solutions? thanks in advance
Long ping times is normal due to how it operates. But only 5-6mbps? That's pretty slow. Most get averages of 13-18mbps and some get averages around 25.
Try the different modems to see which will be better for your location.

So, its kind of normal to get slower speed while on a call?
It would seem a logical conclusion. But I've never tested it. But I've never had anything not load or go slow enough for me to notice. If I think about it on my next call ill try to test it out.

Ok thanks, The problem here is that I find it way to slow.. lets say I'm downloading a file with no phone call going and I get 600KB/s, during I call I get like 16 to 40KB/s at most... It's like having dial up again... way to slow.. I think something is not right but can't figure out what, since I reverted back to stock wiped everything and also formatted the system after installing stock..
Have you checked your imei or ever lost it?
If not you should really try the different modems.
If this is a recent development you should also call support to see if they have any tower issues in your area.

IMEI still intact, and have never lost it. I will try with different modems thank you! I'm not sure if this is a new issue since I didn't use my internet as I am using it now while on a call before, also I moved from Puerto Rico to the states for a few months, so there are many variables at the same time. But will try with the modems.
Another question, when I odin Stock (not rooted) ROM does everything (incl. modem, kernel, etc) goes back to stock?

Hello, spent the whole day testing out every single JB modem from your post and none of them solved my problem... did find better speeds with some on them while not on a call. But as soon as I'm on a call the speed drops to about 47kbps, looks like a cap or something because I get constant speed of 47-49 kbps. Sometimes it goes over the cap and works normally but for a few seconds then the speed drops and its not constant anymore until it reaches around 47kbps... This is so frustrating... is there anything else that I can try out??

Flash the LJC firmware package. Third firmware link in my signature. This is for SGH-T999 (d2tmo) only. Unsure about the download cap while talking on the phone. Aren't the two separate? Cell and data, right? Shouldn't be a cap then, but I've never been talking on the phone while downloading a file. I will try it if I think about it tomorrow.
5-6Mbps is not bad. It just depends so much on where you are. My fastest test ever was the other day @ 14.4Mbps. It's not a big city, but it's sizable. It's usually under 10Mbps in that location. And normally less than that everywhere else in the area. There are some areas that put me on Edge. Might as well just turn on airplane mode. Because T-Mobile's Edge... is actually worse than no data connection at all.
Thank you, will try that tomorrow. 5-6mbps is fine for me but that is without call. While on call is like 0.37mbps constant or really bad ups and downs.. is like edge (worst than not having connection at all).. anyways will try and report back. Thanks again

Sorry I couldn't remember this before, but I have a theory that could explain what's going on there.
Voice calls and 2g (GPRS) both share the same frequency spectrum. I remember doing some 3g research in the past and one of the benefits to the introduction of 3g was more overall bandwidth for all, even those left on 2g. At the time, 2g data service was greatly impacted by how much voice traffic was going across the network at any given time.
During peak voice call times, there was less bandwidth for mobile data users because the tech was designed to give priority to the calls. This meant even slower than usual 2g data speeds.
But as people moved to 3g, there were less using 2g for data lessening the impact caused by voice and sms communications.
So what I'm getting at is when you are on a call, that call is going across 2g frequencies, meaning you are connected to 2g. (Though 4g data should still be available to you regardless. But it may have something to do with what you're experiencing.)
Keep in mind that this was 3 or 4 years ago. I'd think that it'd work differently now. But it is possible that they never changed the fact that voice shares its spectrum with 2g. I could be seriously off with all of this, but I still thought I'd mention it since it would make a little sense with the speeds you're seeing.
The thing is, the S3.is capable of using DC-HSPA (dual carrier) which means it can use 2 different signals at once (one from T-Mobile, one from a partner carrier) for greater speeds (HSPA+42). So I don't understand why it won't use this same tech to give you better data speeds while on a call.
I know I've used mobile data while on the phone before, and never felt like the qos was lacking. But I never speed tested it either.
The more I think about it though, the more I'm thinking it's either firmware (see aerowinders post above), hardware, or you're connecting to a tower that either has problems or hasn't been upgraded in a long time. I don't believe that what you're seeing is normal operation.
Of course every bit of this is speculation at this point. Hope no one thinks I wasted their time with it. I thought it may spark some ideas though!

I was looking up some information and ran across this. Figured Id link you to it since it is directly related to your problem.
You can pretty much ignore my above post! LOL
T-Mobile Support Document - Using Voice and Data Services at the Same Time
Basically, it looks like you should call Tmobile.
Tried with the file you provided and still the same results.. I guess I will have to call tmobile to troubleshoot this problem :/ thanks tho

Hello, I still have not called customer service, but I'm going to be back where I din't have any problems next week. I'm going to test it out there. If I don't have problems there, then it's this area the one with problems. Anyways I will let you all know my findings.. Thank you all for the support!
Edit: I just confirmed that it works perfectly fine where it used to worked fine. It must be the new area where I moved recently that has issues. Thank you all for your time and help.
