Bluetooth version & BMW music streaming - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I wondered if anyone can help with my query regarding getting music streaming to a BMW 320ED via Bluetooth?
The good news is that I can get my Galaxy Nexus (GSM 4.1.1 stock software) to pair with the car and I can get music playing via Bluetooth, but I can't see the artist information. The car screen informs me that the device doesn't supporting sending track information, or something along those lines.
What frustrates me about this is that my friends iPhone 4S does stream the track information as well as the actual audio. I Googled to see what Bluetooth version both phones use, apparently the iPhone 4S is Bluetooth 4.0 and the Galaxy Nexus has 4.0 capable hardware but only 3.0 features are available due to software limitations.
Is this true? Is once of the differences between Bluetooth 3.0 and 4.0 the ability for track information to also be shared? I was using Google Play Music if that makes any difference.

I've done some more research about this and thought I would update my post, just in case it's of help to anyone facing a similar issue. Turns out the Bluetooth protocol/profile AVRCP is responsible for streaming music tags to the car stereo, but only AVRCP 1.3 and above. Unfortunately the Galaxy Nexus only supports 1.0 by default but CyanogenMod 10 has built in support for 1.3 since roughly the 14th September nightly.
Should be able to test it out next week at some point. Why are Google so bad at supporting the latest Bluetooth features? I've always found this with Google experience devices to lack in this area where other manufacturers support the latest Bluetooth features.

Incredible + A2DP on Kenwood kiv bt-900?

Just had the new kenwood deck installed... Should do almost anything. I have my incredible paired up and calls are clear. Problem is A2DP audio streaming. Does not work. No A2DP device is found. Yes, the manual gives directions to play streamed audio once bt is synced. Well, its synced, got my phone book on there, and calls are being made.
Any thoughts or ideas to get streaming audio?
I don't have any help to offer, but I am experiencing the same problem with my Pioneer FH-P8000BT. Pairs for phone calls with no issue and everything is clear, but the radio does not even "see" the device as being available for A2DP.
I previously paired a few different HTC phones (all running Windows Mobile) with this radio with no issues. I'm hoping it's a simple fix, but I can't find a single thing in the settings that I haven't played with to try and get it to work.
I have an Alpine HU with an Alpine KCE-400BT bluetooth add on. My streaming audio is working, although I don't get any song/artist info on screen. I do have an issue where the phone doesn't sync up all the time. It syncs up great in the morning. If I stop for gas or something (turn off the car briefly) and get back in, then the radio won't see the phone until a call comes in or is started from the phone (or I toggle BT on/off).
You might check with Pioneer on any firmware udpates.
My incredible works great with my Ford sync system. It always connects, calls are loud and crisp, and streaming bt audio works great. I use it to listen to Pandora all the time.

I have seen other people post issues with having bluetooth on the phone enabled before the car is on. If you turn the car on first and then the phone's bluetooth they said it worked fine.
I have Kenwood HU and my phone won't pair with it. my Blackberry Paired with it fine, and even did A2DP, and worked awesome...now......nothing.
Been looking for some answers as to why, but after calling Kenwood they said it's a software update that is missing.
however, seeing as some people are getting it working fine....I am suspecious.
Kenwood 4160 working, actually better
My 4160 and serveral WM units worked, but the A2DP always had to be turned on by going into the menu every single time I wanted to listen to anything from the phone, but the Incredible does it by itself every time perfectly.
I have a Pioneer AVIC N4 and the audio for both calls and music works just fine out of the box.
I have the kiv-bt900 also, and it is my understanding that it does not have A2DP. I believe the A2Dp in the manual is referring to the KIV-700 with the add on bt module.
From page 67 (of the downloaded manual from Kenwood)
KIV-BT900
Supported Bluetooth Profiles:
Version: Bluetooth Standard Ver. 2.0
Profile: HFP (Hands Free Profile)
OPP: (Object Push Profile)
PCAP (Phone Book Access Profile
SYNC (Synchronization Profile)
I thought it had it too when i bought it. Maybe a future update will enable it though??
What does A2DP mean please?
it stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile. In simple terms, it's stereo audio transferred from one device to another via bluetooth. Example: Music from a phone/mp3 player to stereo bluetooth headphones, head units etc..
Thank you.

Well damn. The deck was sold to me from car toys (local vendor) under the pretense that it would do zune (works great) and A2DP...
Usb works great too... I was thinking of formatting a laptop drive to the mac file system (hfs) and hooking it up to the usb port to get a200GB drive of mp3 and video since it supports ipods. (works on xbx360, why not here?)
OK so a small fix, but not the end result.
with my Kenwood head unit I can make it work as long as I don't let it download the phonebook. and that is no problem since the phone sits on my dash in the car dock. but the problem is that EVERY time I start up my truck, or after I end a call it asks to re-download the phonebook.
it kinda irks me, but I cannot get it to stop asking, no setitngs on the stereo work.
I emailed Kenwood about possibly releasing a firmware update to include A2DP to the kiv bt900. They responder saying that there isn't enough demand for the feature for them to create a firmware update. So if we get enough people contacting them and requesting that feature, they will release and update. So you guys should all contact them to increase the demand for this feature. Hope this helps.
Here is exactly what they responded:
"I understand that you're inquiring about the KIV-BT900's Bluetooth features. We do apologize for any difficulties that you've experienced with this item. Unfortunatley, we cannot assist you with any firmware updates at this point since this model was just recently released to the market. Our company has not received enough demand for this feature which prevents us from developing or releasing an update for the KIV-BT900 unit. We may release an Bluetooth update in the future, however it's hard to determine at this time."
I'm willing to start complaining and sending some emails out to them. What email address did you send it too? I just got the player and that is def the only thing missing to make it complete for me.
I tried emailing the regular support channels and got the below message.
Thank you for contacting Kenwood USA Corporation. We value you as a Kenwood customer and appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance.
I Understand you are inquiring about any updates to allow the A2DP profile.
There is currently no available updates and there hasn't been information on upcoming updates for the A2DP profile. We ask that you check back at a later date to verify if one is posted through the www.kenwoodusa.com website.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
Please feel free to contact us again with any additional questions.
I spoke with a rep and they mentioned that A2DP missing from the unit is the most often called in issue about the unit.
I have a KDC-BT948 with the same issue. They removed A2DP and put in Pandora instead..and it only works through iPhone, which then uses up wireless data on a cell phone plan. So Android, MS phones, and any other bluetooth device can no longer be used with a Kenwood Car Stereo. Someone at Pandora really made an impression at someone in Kenwood. It is too bad that they are limiting consumers with their choice which ultimately limits their sales and increases complaints.
Should have everyone go do this and request a fix.
Go to the Kenwood Contact page and send an email
This is what I sent
I have purchased the KDC-BT948HD radio.
Where I am overall happy with many of the features, looks, variable colors, and excellent sound quality of the unit, there are several things that I am extremely dissapointed in and would like to see an update released to resolve them.
1. SMS Received message on the unit: Might be useful to some, but to me it is a dangerous distraction while driving, especially at night. It has me take my eyes off the road to look at the unit and makes me want to look at my phone to read/send texts. Texting and driving is illegal in many states and there should be a way on the unit to allow a selection to turn this feature off.
2. BT Audio (A2DP) is missing. I have an Android phone with my music on it. Alone there are more Android phones than iPhones in use today. I wanted to have Bluetooth streaming audio so I can play my music from my phone to the unit. For such a high technology unit, it should be part of the firmware and flexibility to the consumer to use their device with more options. The previous year units had this enabled and seems to be disabled now replaced by a focus on a wired Apple connection and Pandora. Forcing use of Pandora also forces consumers to use up data rates on their wireless plans. If A2DP were enabled, more consumers could enjoy the product integration with standard BT devices offered by Apple, Android, Microsoft and many others. All could enjoy the music and audio applications on their devices including Pandora. I would like to request that A2DP be added to the firmware and source selection on this device. I should yield increase product ratings and sales as web searches show many complaints about this issue.
I would value your feedback on these points and potential solutions.
Best regards

[Q] Bluetooth - Can it stream song info?

Ok, I know we have bluetooth controls on our devices thanks to WinAMP and PowerAMP but here's the next thing we don't have.
Can bluetooth transmit song info when it streams audio to a radio?
if its only a matter of control stacks or version of bluetooth, which control stack or version is needed?
The HTC ThunderBolt is one of the first handsets to be upgradeable to Bluetooth 3.0 when it becomes available as an update. I'm just doing a little early research on the matter what to expect and not to expect from it.
**Note: There was a VERY old thread that had this same question but it was never answered, hence the new thread**
My truck stereo streams the phone number of incoming calls, but doesn't (currently) stream song info.
My dinc runs CM7 nightlies and interfaces with my Clarion CZ500 stereo.

Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 - Cannot hear media

so... I think I've narrowed down my issues with newer ROMs coming out and my bluetooth not working in the car anymore. just a little background information,
- 2011 Toyota Camry SE w/ JBL Audio
- Verizon Galaxy Nexus using various ROMs
prior to any newer releases, I would use voice/audio over bluetooth, ran great without a problem. I didn't get metadata on screen but was ok. pandora, spotify, notification sounds, google music, etc... worked like a charm.
well... now I noticed that only voice calls & google music work over bluetooth connection in the car. I thought this was first an issue with pairing the device to the car, so I deleted all the profiles in the car and redid connection on phone. I still couldn't get sound out of any other media application i.e.; pandora, youtube, notifcations, spotify, etc... I could only get google music to work correctly. the apps not working look like they are playing, I turn off bluetooth on phone and it continues playing, but when bluetooth is on I hear nothing.
so after researching, I see that majority of new releases include AVRCP 1.3 which pushes metadata to the displays. I noticed this now works with google music, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get other media services working properly. I've researched on RW, Google, other Android forums and can see some have similar issues, but the thread soon dies. [/background]
can anyone tell me if I can use an updated ROM with AVRCP 1.0 instead of AVRCP 1.3 to test? does anyone have suggestions I could try to get other media services working? thanks!

I think it's AVRCP 1.3 in CM 10 based roms that breaks this. I just switched to jelly belly 9 (4.1.2) which rolled back bluetooth profiles back to AVRCP 1.0 and pandora etc. works but without media info obviously. I also saw a AVRCP 1.3 patch for Pandora somewhere that may make it work. It's possible that the problem isn't that the ROM is not compatible, but that the Apps aren't.

Ok... I've confirmed it has to be AVRCP 1.3
Last night I took advice. I installed Jelly Belly 9 "4.1.2" w/ reverted AVRCP 1.0 because of BT issues, and this morning I went to work, tested connection with BT and everything worked! So... Looks like the issue lies with AVRCP 1.3. I don't see metadata on screen anymore but it doesn't bother me, I'd rather have all other media players working.
To touch on what others are saying, statements Google Music works perfectly fine with AVRCP 1.3 based ROM's as well as voice through BT. It's just the other media players i.e; pandora, slacker, youtube, notifications, etc.... that don't work. I'm guessing from what I read, is that the applications do not support AVRCP 1.3 and will not push to Toyota head units properly. Not sure if this is going to get fixed or not, but sucks because this limits what I can/can't use for ROMs at least a solution was found and reason why. Thanks bud!
You could also try https://github.com/loganakamatsu/PandoraAVRCP for the Pandora patch. Maybe patches exist for other apps as well...
I read on another thread that any app that supports the Scrobble Droid API hxxp://code.google.com/p/scrobbledroid/wiki/DeveloperAPI will pass the meta info to AVRCP. So I assume if you install ScrobbleDroid app hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.jjc1138.android.scrobbler&hl=en from the play store any app that it is compatible with will also pass the meta info to the display.
As noted, Pandora is not supported as it does not broadcast its intents. I personally had issues getting the PandoraAVRCP github to patch. If anyone has a patched pandora.apk, I would certainly appreciate a PM.
Good luck.

[Q] Display Song info over bluetooth in Car

I was wondering if anybody could tell me if their Bluetooth in car setup displays the song info on their display in-car. If it does, what app are you using? I am using Doubletwist and it doesn't display the song info in my car. I'm pretty sure its not a limitation in the car, more an app issue.
So, I guess ultimately, a list of music player apps that send song info over Bluetooth in-car is what I am looking for.
I think only a custom ROM like AOSP and CM10 can actually do this.

I have all my music loaded into Google music and since Sprint is horribly slow I rarely stream music while driving, I use a thumb drive or CD's. I have a Kenwood DNX9180 and I never paid attention to what was on the radios display.
What brand of radio are you using?
I will load some songs on my phone a give it a test. I use to use Winamp as a media player because they had cool internet radio stations.
I would imagine with the A2DP profile it should display song/track info(metadata) and with AVRCP you should be able to control the phone from the radio. It may be a software issue with the radio and not with the phone.
A few weeks ago I installed a Pioneer AVHP2400Bt into a customers car and he had a new iPhone 5. It would not display the metadata on the screen while streaming but with the USB it would. On the website it said Pioneer is coming out with a firmware update for IOS 6.

I am using the stock radio from Honda in the 2012 CRV. I am pretty positive it is an issue with the apps (or like the guy said before thinking you have to be on ASOP or CM10). I am using the paranoid android rom on Verizon gnex now so I dunno. Can anyone test any of these theories out?

Try asking in Honda forums. I have a 2010 Mazda with BT and AUX in, but I've never gotten any sort of text display to show. Even though my car dashboard has buttons for "text" and "disp", they don't do anything.

I read a little further, and it seems what we need is AVRCP 1.3 support (1.0 doesn't cut it) in both phone and car.
Then I found this thread which concludes that AOSP JB doesn't have it, whereas CM ICS ROMs did. Later on, someone ported it to a JB (toro) ROM, and the code was merged into AOKP.
Any AOKP nightlies past 8-8-12 should include them.

Nexus 7 2013 as Audio Head Unit - Best Current Solutions?

I’m currently in the process of replacing my car’s audio head with my 2013 Nexus 7 and I’d like to know what current options there are for any ROM/app solutions since all the threads that I found on this topic were from 2016 and earlier.
I personally don’t need Android Auto integration (at least I think I don’t) and I’d like to keep my phone operational while I’m driving anyway. What I’d want would be the ability to connect phonecalls and music as well as sync the navigation. FM radio would be a nice bonus. However of course feel free to write/link anything relevant to the topic.
I have a n7 2013 as my head unit. have had one for years. Timur's 6.0.1 version is still the go-to for that as far as I know. Check reddit.
How i have it is the tablet connects via bluetooth to a JL Audio MBT-RX, then that feeds into the Alpine KTP445U which feeds the speakers.
I use my phone's hotspot and connect the tablet to that and I run youtube vanced so i can listen to any song i want without commercials.
I know this is a few months late but hopefully this helps you or someone else in the future. It's by far my favorite mod in my car as it's something i use daily.
