Lumia missing "Highest Connection Speed" - Nokia Lumia 900

Is there any way to get an at&t Lumia 900 to bring up the "Highest Connection Speed" setting? It seems at&t removes this from most of their devices. The ##3282# trick doesn't seem to work, unless I'm doing it wrong.

how these trick ##3282# should work ? I tried it and I got list of connections or what is this called? so there are like GSM, WCDMA, LTE, 4G neighbors, 3G a lots of others.

Don't think so. That option in the Field Test menu was removed in one of the Firmware updates. I still have the option in my Cellular setting cause I turned it on awhile ago.
Guess AT&T wants you to use LTE even if you don't need or want to. Just stay close to a charger.

It was so worth the time to reset (I hadn't done much) and downgrade using Nokia care suite. Battery is so much better on my unlocked Lumia now that I've told it not to look for LTE or 3G since I Can't get either yet.

connectivity
My lumia 900 sometimes show disconnected from operator ... Does this be my operator problem?

To which version downgrade did the LTE On/Off option appear?

In post 1 of SuperSports thread in the dev forum he links to a mediafire share with a pre-tango rom there for Nokia Care Suite for the rm808 US at&t nokias. Downgrade to that with nokia care suite, do the ##3282# trick and verify the option is there, then upgrade to Tango with Zune or Mac Connector and it'll stick.
It's a pain in the ass, since you lose everything you already setup... But, worth it. Just know there is a risk that you could possibly brick the device doing this.

Using T-Mo SGH-T989 on Mobilicity in Canada, a few questions..

I wonder if anybody is using this phone in Mobi here in Canada, a friend of mine got one and the first thing we noticed was that it takes FOREVER to pick the signal, even u do a manual search is painfully slow to stick to Mobi's network, also the Wifi spot is locked, and so we wonder if anybody knows a way to work around these issues without rooting (at the moment !!!).
Thanks for any input!
Btw, the phone is great, thin, light, no way that crappy mapple mockup will be even close, I mean, it does even come with Si....I mean Voice command, which works amazing!
I don't think there's another radio out yet so, i think the radio searching issue you're having isn't fixable?
I haven't heard anyone complain about the signal search so maybe it's your area or something with your particular phone. Try setting it to WCDMA preferred/only. Also, call into Wind and ask for a network reset.
Also, it seems like the wifi-spot is locked down by the t-mobile ROM. I doubt there's any fix for that other than rooting and installing a non-crippled ROM. I stand to be corrected though as I have yet to get mine in.
I know on mine when I do a Factory Reset it does take a minute or two to find the Mobilicity signal, but then it locks on, and is fine when I restart the phone. No work around for the Wifi Tethering unless you root and freeze the Tethering Manager. Sorry.
it works, i'm using it on Wind as you can see
just set the phone to look for WCDMA only as mentioned above, and it will bypass scanning the Rogers, Bell, Telus signal
so you get the Wind and Mobi towers to show up quickly that way
Funny you have the same problem as couple of other guys here (including me):
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...-S2x-unlocked-Wont-find-network-automatically
My response remains the same:
It's definitely a problem with Mobilicity not your phone. It happens to me too when I boot up the phone it says "No Service" even though I previously registered with Mobilicity network and phone setting is set to register automatically. Don't worry. Boot up the phone, do nothing and wait for 2-3 minutes and see what happens. I usually have to wait 1 minute or so for the phone to auto-register to Mobilicity, not instant.
Also, in your mobile settings, set it to "WCDMA only" instead of the default "GSM / WCDMA auto" because Mobilicity uses WCDMA bands only. It may speed some things up.
Also, if you want to speed things up even more, go to your dialer, dial *#*#2263#*#*, select "WCDMA Band Preference", and then select "WCDMA 1700" so that the phone looks by default in the 1700 band (the band the Mobilicity uses exclusively).

This is not true.
You can root your phone, use Titanium Backup (paid version) to freeze the system app called "Tethering Manager", after that you can do wifi-hotspot with no problem. T-Mobile uses that software to block this feature.

this is interesting
in WIND i do not have that problem
i power on the phone and it automatically picks up the WIND tower by itself during boot time
so by the time you see the lock screen, it already says WIND Home

In the (Howard Forum) thread that I linked to, a lot of people are having this problem with registering this phone with Mobilicity. And I can personally vouch for it that every time phone boots up it takes an additional 2 minutes before you see Mobilicity.
Thx guys, so I was rt about switching the AWS setting, still it bothers me, in any case and in regards to the Wifi hotspot, what about after installing a ROM, does it stay locked or the app becomes the standard manager for the Wifi hotspot?, I wish I could rewrite the app on the stock ROM but I don't really know how to get into that...

My SGS2x works fine with Mobilicity, been using it with them since the 30th.
wifi tethering worked from day 1 using the stock telus install. I'm now using several custom ROMs, and overall I'm really happy with the phone on mobilicity. their 3g internet leaves lots to be desired though, perhaps it will improve, but it is an unlimited carrier.

There's a stripped down version of the stock ROM. Never tried it but maybe that will work. You should just use one of those custom roms if you're going to root it. They have tweaks and other whatnots that improve your phone's performance. Once you go custom, you don't want to go back to stock.

The issue isn't cell towers, the issue is back end internet, after the IP transmission gets through their cell network to whatever centre they use, the internet connection to that that all of Toronto shares it ****ty and can't keep up. It's not a single overloaded tower that's the issue, as you can see by doing constant speed tests while roaming around.
Backend internet connections are expensive, especially the bandwidth on them. Small carrier can't afford to keep up to it's unlimited bandwidth demands.

Well, this is not rooted yet so that's a huge difference since ur phone will for sure include modifications to the radio, in all (I just figured it) is about Samsung, I have a N8 and a NS, compared the 2 with the SMGS2 (T989) and there is a thing in common between the NS and the T989, getting signal from cold boot or out of dead spots is a pain, my N8 picks the signal almost immediately, on the NS running stock it takes a good 2 to 3 mins (or more if out of cold boot) to get signal but the NS running MIUI makes things faster, I presume and since the stock SMGS2 takes a long time (like the NS) the same will happen when u run the phone with a modded ROM, it will pick signal faster.
So I guess it's all about rooting

I agree with the backend connection. But I think it's a bit of both. Some areas don't have as many cell towers as others. (in my area, i only have two) So I have a feeling it's both rather than just the backend.
Hopefully, they have a good new subs-to-upgrade interval so the speeds will get better.
well, regarding the nexus S
a lot of people in WIND also complains that it always stays in "emergency mode calls only, blah blah blah" basically unable to attach itself to the network.
i seldomly get that on my Nexus S, but that's probably because it's customized
but on the T989, i don't have that problem even in stock
so that's actually very nice

That reinforce my statement, is not really the network but mostly the way Samsung works the radios on their phones on the 1700 Mhz freq or at least for us, don't know in the US.
My NS running stock is a pain, modded works nicely, takes a bit longer than my Nokia but gets the network faster than running stock Android, I bet the same happens with the T989.
I am currently on Mobilicity in Vancouver with a crappy cheap phone and it has a hell of a time getting reception on the network. I live in East Van near victoria and I get reception in only 1 room in my place. I am planning on getting the Telus GS2X in a couple of weeks. Would this help my problem? Can anyone who lives in Vancouver and has the GS2X comment on his/her reception in east van?
Thanks alot.

a new phone might not help if the tower is physically too far from your location
however a good phone with good reception could improve your problem
the only way to find out is to try the phone in your house and see if it works for you
Does anyone know the best place to buy this phone and have it shipped to usa. I know tmobile sells the phone but if I use a tmobile branded android phone they up the cost of my service.
If u want the phone not branded to T-Mo then u'll have to get the Telus version sine it comes with no T-Mo stuff, I don't know of this model to be able factory unlocked
On the other hand I have a couple of new questions:
1> Is there a way to fix/access the MMS?, on Mobi I'm getting errors when receiving MMS, the pixs come all blurry.
2> Any way to enable the Wifi Tethering?, using the T-Mo model is just impossible unless u have the T-Mo sim which is not the case and I haven't seen any of the existing ROM's addressing the issue (sorry if I missed the part, so pls let me know if it's fixed )
Thx
1) check the apn settings and match it to the mobilicity ones. Head over to hofo and there's a thread about it
2) you need to root your phone &, put a custom rom on it. There's another way of disabling a process but I suggest the former

Rogers in Canada - No LTE for VPN users

So since I've had my Lumia 900, I've never seen "LTE" beside the reception bars. I didn't even know I wasn't on LTE, until I saw a picture of a screen and google'd the modes...
Anyways, I pay extra for VPN access (you pay a premo for a publicly route-able IP address that isn't proxied or firewalled). When you pay this, you get access to the "vpn.com" APN which gives you that IP.
So I called today to find out why I haven't been getting LTE, turns out Rogers doesn't provide LTE service for "vpn.com" apn users.
Does anyone know anything about this? Anyone know when they might let users use the VPN option over LTE?
Here's something odd too...
Using the HSPA+ VPN apn with a public IP, I can download music off the Marketplace SUPER SUPER fast. 5 seconds to download a song using Zune pass, menu's are realtime, etc...
I switch to the LTE proxy/NATd APN (The standard APN 90%+ of customers use), and the marketplace is not fully usable, downloading music takes FOREVER... Takes 10 seconds to load menus sometimes, takes over a minute to download a song sometimes, etc...
EDIT: I've done more testing, it's not always that bad, but it is a lot slower then using the HSPA+ VPN APN. Sometimes its close to as fast, while other times it seems almost as if connections are being dropped.
This is odd, the ones that's slower actually uses the new fast LTE network.
I had that conversation with them back in December when I got my first LTE stick. Turned out no LTE for vpn.com users and no alternative APN to cover for that at the moment. I was told "we are aware of the issue and hopefully there will be solution soon." I was thinking Rogers will drop that idea of making extra cash on LTE data (given the other carriers don't do it) and allow old APN's to ride the LTE band, but so far no. And no update on the issue either..

So while having some trouble texting today, I decided to bring up the VPN.com APN again re: LTE connectivity...
Apparently now they are trying to transfer me to customer care telling me I need to add something for the LTE VPN apn... So you're telling me I've been paying for this option all along waiting for them to light it up on LTE, and now it's not even the same option?
Ugh...

Rogers Lumia 900 on T-Mobile

Hey everyone. I've got a Lumia 900 from Rogers unlocked running on T-Mobile. I was finally able to get one. My internet works great. It's Edge but that's because that is from my ten dollar grandfathered data plan so I don't mind. Everything works great I have the purple hue problem but it doesn't bother me much. What I am having trouble with that is bothering me a bit is that I can't send and receive MMS picture messages. Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? I called T-Mobile. They were very helpful as always and tried sending me the settings and everything but it still won't work. Any idea what I could do to get this working? Is it because I have a Roger's phone that was unlocked? Would I have the same problem if I got the world unlocked version? Thanks in advance. I'm really excited about the phone it's awesome. Just switched from an HTC Radar. I don't wanna have to wait until Windows Phone 8 for a phone with MMS. Thanks!
Yes, you'd have the same problem on any Windows Phone not sold by T-Mobile. You need the Network Setup app to configure MMS settings. According to Nokia it should be out in the US late this month, early next month.
Oh okay, thanks. Would the app work or show up for me to download if I have a Rogers phone here in the states?
Yeah, you'll be able to get it once it's out.

Hey Exiva,
Do you have a 900 you are using on T-Mobile?
I'm 2 days away from receiving an unlocked version off eBay. Anything I should know? Are you able to get other than Edge and if not, do you think the refarming effort will eventually bring the 900 to 3G or better?
Thanks

I'm not using a 900 on T-Mobile (Waiting for codes for the phone I won.) As of now you should only get edge, but yes, once the new frequencies are rolled out it should be able to get 3G/Faux-4G.
how did you get data to work on T-Mobile at all ? Did you manually type in the APN ?

[Q] Internet sharing on unlock at&t lumia 900

Hi everyone!
I just unlocked my lumia 900. I am currently having 3GB LTE data plan with AT&T. I thought after it got unlocked, I will be able to turn on the internet sharing without getting the 5GB data plan. But it looks like I am wrong. Can some one tell me if there is a way to turn on the internet sharing with 3GB data plan on an unlocked Lumia 900? Many thanks!!
Nope. Unlock is only fro SIM cards so that you can use other carrier's sim cards. Internet Sharing is permanently locked in software. There might be slim chance that you can use Internet Sharing on other carriers but you will never be able to do so on AT&T.
So can we like refresh another carrier's system version on it? Like Rogers? So that can enable the internet sharing.
Yes, if there is way for you to do so. You will need to locate such a ROM and find a way to flash it on to your phone.

I've reset my phone twice now just to verify and I can reproduce the effect every time... Internet Sharing works fine on my unlocked Lumia 900 that I'm now using w/T-Mobile (I'm in Vegas so yes, i do get 4g) and then I download the Nokia Network Setup app and just after running it for the first time I immediately check internet sharing... I get the msg to call AT&T to enable internet sharing.
So, that's what is causing it for my device as far as I can tell...Anyone feel like trying it to get a 2nd confirmation?

Here is a downer:
I just got a brand new Lumia 920 dev phone. Totally unlocked. And yet, when I plug in my AT&T SIM card and launch Internet Sharing, it gives me the same exact message my AT&T branded Lumia 900. It looks like Nokia goes out of its way to protect AT&T's interest even on a non-branded, totally unlocked, and yes WP8, phone.

No. It is not branded as I mentioned and I have to manually configure the APN before I can use cell data.

Pulling this thread up again. Has anybody any experience on WP 7.8? I have my lumia running on WP 7.8 (clean flash through the care suite). I did install the Nokia Network setup, since I wasn't aware of this particular issue (yes, I should have done my research, but didn't).
So, before I reset my phone, and spend all the time to set up my 4 email accounts and have to reconfigure my home screen (which would take longest), I want to make sure that resetting it will actually help to get the teathering working n T-Mobile.
Thanks

Unlocked Sprint Note 5 issues.

So my brother gave my his old Sprint Galaxy Note 5, which he had unlocked so that I could use it on AT&T. We had to set up the new APN to work with GSM instead of CDMA. The issue is that it cannot access 4G bands, just 3G. There are some other minor issues as well, such as location based services. I was looking into flashing AT&T firmware onto the phone, but cannot seem to find a way to do it online. I may not have scoured hard enough, or it may not be able to be done.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this for me? I would prefer not to brick the phone by attempting something when I clearly do not have enough information about the subject. Could it just be an APN issue? Or will the phone just be stuck on a lower speed band? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
The modem will only be able to access the 3G network as AT&T uses different LTE bands then Sprint.
I just found that out a little earlier today. Forgot to delete this thread. Thank you for your reply though.

You might be able to force the network bands with an app. No promises.
Well crap, just got mine unlocked to do the same thing. Guess I'm better off selling it and getting the att version. Was hoping the N7 took off so people would dump their N5 but looks like people will be keeping it.

It does support the AT&T LTE bands, call AT&T and have them put in the IMEI into the system to allow LET access. Since it's a Sprint phone it's not in their system as a 4G/LTE device. I got mine working but seems it has a difficult time getting into LTM mode, I have the correct APN setup and 3G works fine.
