Does anyone know of a way to permanently set DNS settings instead of relying on an app like setdns that requires root perms every time it joins a network?
I just want to set them to OpenDNS or Google DNS and let it ride but I'm not sure how.

Not sure if this will work but it's where I would start..
With getprop you can get properties of some items.. With setprop you can change those items...
See picture..
I would try to use setprop to change it.. Not sure if it would save on reboot though...
Also I haven't tried this yet..
If it works but doesn't save on reboot you can run a script on boot to set the new settings.

Add the dns you want to system/etc/hosts
I think you remove 127.0.0.1 localhost, if that messes it up just add 127.0.0.1 localhost back to it.
That will stick on reboot as well

The hosts file is for static entries..
People mainly use it to point ad server hosts to 127.0.0.1 so that your phone won't have access to the real ip of the ad server and thus won't display the ad.
But that's not the same as changing dns.
He wants lookups to be done on public dns servers.

Oh got it i misread the post, sorry. Not sure about that one havent had any experience with it.
If you know the setprop line to use you can add it to postboot to set it on boot. Or use init.d if you have it.
Think I found it from here
http://androidforums.com/elite-all-things-root/582603-build-prop-tweaks-edited.html
Adding this to build.prop should set Google as DNS after boot. Will try in a bit.
Code:
net.rmnet0.dns1=8.8.8.8
net.rmnet0.dns2=8.8.4.4
net.dns1=8.8.8.8
net.dns2=8.8.4.4
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium HD app
Be careful not to change permissions of that file!
Quick question though.. Why do you want to change dns? Is your carrier blocking sites?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Nah, AT&T is terribly slow here so I was hoping to speed up a bit with different DNS and APN settings.

In addition to amending build.prop for example:
# dns settings
# 8.8.8.8 Google
# 8.8.4.4 Google
# 208.67.222.222 OpenDNS
# 208.67.220.220 OpenDNS
# 208.67.222.123 OpenDNS Familyshield
# 208.67.220.123 OpenDNS Familyshield
net.rmnet0.dns1=208.67.222.222
net.rmnet0.dns2=208.67.220.220
net.dns1=208.67.222.222
net.dns2=208.67.220.220
I think that you also need to add/edit the file /etc/resolve.conf. Mine contains the following:
# 8.8.8.8 Google
# 8.8.4.4 Google
# 208.67.222.222 OpenDNS
# 208.67.220.220 OpenDNS
# 208.67.222.123 OpenDNS Familyshield
# 208.67.220.123 OpenDNS Familyshield
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
My efforts fine tune my Lenovo A2109A are a work in progress
Use ADB shell
settings put global net.dns1 8.8.8.8
...
...
...
While you're at it, get free tethering at AT&T
settings put global tether_dun_required 0

I need to add my email address for my college in CM6 but there isn't an option to do so. I can set it up OWA method but I don't have the options.
I go to Settings, Accounts & Sync, Add account and only see:
Twitter, Exchange, Facebook, Google. Where did the option for "Other" go? Any workaround?
Have you tried k-9 mail app for non gmail accounts? Avail in the marketplace!

The domain would be the website I go to check my email correct? I don't think it's the school website.
the domain would most likely be the suffix of your email address.
it is possible that you login with a domain name other than the email suffix. however, if you're looking for the 'other' to set it up, then i'm pretty sure you already have the domain, user, server, etc.
email: [email protected]
domain = mydomain
server = email.mydomain.com
credentials: mydomain\me or it might be mydomain/me /shrug
Thanks I got it to work

You can read the description in the Market. Setting it up exchange worked fine for me as long as you know your login information and the school website.

Virtual Private Network. Google it. You usually pay for them, perhaps $5 a month.
Excerpt from wiki:
A virtual private network (VPN) is a mechanism for providing secure, reliable transport over Internet[1].The VPN uses authentication to deny access to unauthorized users, and encryption to prevent unauthorized users from reading the private network packets. The VPN can be used to send any kind of network traffic securely, including voice, video or data.
VPNs are frequently used by remote workers or companies with remote offices to share private data and network resources. VPNs may also allow users to bypass regional internet restrictions such as firewalls, and web filtering, by "tunneling" the network connection to a different region.
Oh. I know what a VPN is. I use it when working from home.
I meant to ask how it's possible to use VPN to access BBC iPlayer from the States
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
The VPN will act like a proxy so you will have a UK IP and therefore Iplayer will work.
so how would i go about doing this? where do i obtain a uk ip?

My employer has set a 3 day limit on activesync email syncing -- anyway to override this to "all / forever"?
not if its set by the server. you can go to your sync options and change it if its not a server limitation.

Ya figured -- iPhone has a glitch that lets me get around it. But I suppose if Samsung is the standard for "enterprise-grade" that the software will be rock solid in following server-level rules.

Has anyone gotten any openvpn client to work on the note 3 using t-mobile data? I can connect via wifi and thru tethering my laptop to my note 3 but not on note 3 with data on 4g

Weird, I tried openvpn connect and openvpn for Android. Using tun connection, non standard port tho and my certs are in the config... What is your setup like?
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
I use OpenVPN Settings with a tap connection, standard port, TCP protocol (though udp worked over 4g, it was my work's wifi that blocks udp so I switched to tcp). Phone takes an address on my router where the server's hosted and all is good.
Im using open vpn over data as we speak. Air Vpn is my provider.

Where do I make these changes and how?
Do I create a new apn? With same or different settings?
Nvm, I was being lazy. .. so I created a new apn and copied all the settings over and added admin in and set to ipv4/ipv6 and it now works! Thank you so much!
Now any idea why admin has to be added?
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
When you created a new APN are you referring to making one from your phone's Settings -> Connections -> More Networks -> VPN?
Or were you referring to doing all this in OpenVPN Connect App?
The reason I ask is because if done within the phone under settings there is only:
PPTP (horrible as we know),
L2TP/IPSec PSK,
L2TP/IPSec RSA,
IPSec Xauth PSK,
IPSec Xauth RSA,
IPSec Hybrid RSA.
Please clarify as my VPN all of a sudden stopped working (not connecting) on mobile data...only connects on Wifi....it's frustrating.
Thanks.

Can we bypass Sprints Proxy locations by editing these files.
/data/data/com.sec.sprextension/files/mmhttppd.prop
/data/data/0/com.sec.sprextension/files/mmhttppd.prop
/data/data/com.sec.sprextension/files/mmrtsp.prop
/data/data/0/com.sec.sprextension/files/mmrtsp.prop
I'm not sure if you can by editing those files but with your MSL number you could just replace the strings with 0 (for ports) and 0.0.0.0 (for IP addresses / URLs)

I actually figured it out.
thanks to your observation.
I used SQlite editor, and went into Phone Info apk
then in: t_systemproperty find the same proxy addresses and ports.
then change to the respective values as we used to before.
I put 0.0.0.0 for the proxies, and <Not set> for the ports
Sweet, I'm going to do that right away. Thanks

When streaming video it removes the proxy as a mediator... if the bandwidth is there it increases and smooths out the data throughput. ..

Has anyone confirmed this is working? When I first jumped to MM I edited the MMSC settings and had problems sending Multimedia Messages when I was connected to any Wifi,. This included group texts as well as receiving those types of messages. I'm not too good at using SQlite and doing all this on my own, so if someone can confirm and help explain how to do it I would Appreciate it. Don't forget to do a Backup!

Guys, I'm using N910P with a GSM SIM outside of US.
I've enabled hotspot through various "hacks" present here on XDA, but when I try to connect my PC through my phone, the PC gets stuck at "Obtaining IP Address".
In my opinion, there's something in stock MM ROM that looks for some Sprint IPs (I may be wrong). So, will editing lines in above mentioned post work for me too?
