I dunno of Anyone uses this but if ya have go launcher and double the screen it allows you to draw a gesture as a shortcut to open an app.
I am wondering is there an app like this without installing go launcher!?
Hope someone can help!

Try LMT Launcher.
It's free and has gesture controls and optionally a pie menu where you can assign different funtions to each segment.

use apex launcher, it is based on the stock ics/jb launcher but with much more functionality, one of them is to make the apps in the app drawer scroll vertically.
Any luck if we can change scroll orientation other than launchers..default launcher should scroll vertically...

Check Apex settings - settings behavior - quick actions activate (yes)?
Galaxy Nexus 4.1.2 stock
It sounds like you may have locked the desktop. Just go into the app drawer, and under the three-dot settings option, choose unlock desktop.

Does anyone know of a widget that will show your recent apps in the same view as long pressing the home button?
I found shortcut buttons that are just a button on the play store

I ended up just using GMD Gesture Control to create a custom gesture to launch recent apps/recent apps launchpad
