Hi all,
The Verge reported that other Android devices may have the same issue as the S3 did (Samsung has pushed a patch out).
Yesterday we reported on a vulnerability on Samsung phones that could allow a malicious website to wipe a user's device, but new details are coming to light that indicate the issue extends beyond Samsung's product line — and that the dialer in some versions of Android may by the cause. Dylan Reeve writes that he was able to replicate the same behavior on both a HTC One X running HTC Sense 4.0 and a Motorola Defy running a version of CyanogenMod. The Next Web has confirmed the issue also exists on the HTC Desire running Android 2.2.
The problem appears to be the Android dialer itself. Websites are able to link characters with a special prefix in order to pass digits to the dialer in a phone — the same functionality that allows you to initiate a phone call from a site, for example. However, the dialers in phones also support specialized strings of characters that can do anything from displaying a phone's IMEI code to wiping the device itself. In devices vulnerable to the attack, the dialer treats these special codes the same as any other phone number, allowing a website to initiate a reset without the user authorizing it to do so.

Based on the article above, there is a link to a page that you can load it on your browser and test it. Loading this page on your desktop/laptop won't help.
Load it on your mobile browser:
http://dylanreeve.com/phone.php
If your device is susceptible, the page triggers your phone dialer and displays your IMEI number.
On my One X, Sense 4.1 with Android 4.0.4, the device is still susceptible. Apparently, HTC needs to update the dialer software to fix it.
You can read more about it here as well as look up some makeshift solutions:

Let's see how long HTC takes to push out this patch.

leppie and diamant-x informed that the code is available and can be triggered BUT it will require user permission first which reduces the threat tremendously.
The main problem is that samsung provided a built-in code to factory reset without notification, that is a silly programing thing.
HTC didn't, so although we can get USSD codes executed via browser, there's not a lot of problems about it as we won't have our phone erased or something like that.

I think Custom ROMs will be fine because its quite an easy bug to fix and Custom ROM makers respond very very quickly.
Stock (manufacturer based) ROMs could be another story.
Stock ROM is fine too.
I tested it with the factory format and erase codes last night and they did not work. Things like DIAG's you can still get up.

Have you tried the link posted on the 1st post of this thread? It tests whether your device is exposed to running codes through the phone's dialer.
Your HTC device was not affected by the reset code that was posted yesterday because it's a Samsung specific code, however, if your device isn't patched for this security breach it can run a reset code that works on HTC devices as well.

The reason that no-one is too worried about the HTC One X is because apparently it does not have ANY codes that force a factory reset by dialing a number - hence the worst an attacker can do is make your IMEI number pop up. Personally I cannot understand why anyone ever thought it would be a good idea to allow you to do a factory format by typing a number into the dialer that you didn't have to press the call button to execute in any case - don't worry - no-one will be tricking you into a factory format of the HTC One X anytime soon.....

This is NOT a ROM update and you will not lose your data. Also, these files will survive a Hard Reset so they need only to be installed once.

It actually runs kind of like a ROM update. It resets the phone then installs the hotfixes before at the AT&T World Phone splash screen with the ROM and Radio info before WM loads. Interestingly the Radio says "None" on that screen when the update program is running.
does the SMS fix helps improving the sense 2.5 SMS client running on the Tilt2?
if you flash a new rom you need to do the fixes again right? any cabs yet?
Hmmm, I wonder if this is utilizing the vastly underused Windows Mobile Image Update system. It sure sounds like it, but I can't test since I'm not on a stock ROM.
EDIT: It seems it is using Image Update! I extracted the installer and found two .cab.pku files. According to Da_G, this is what they do:
Update contains a binary delta between a package already on the device, and the updated version of that package. In this manner the limited space is conserved (i.e. if a package change was a simple registry entry - no need to replace the 5mb of .dll and .exe in that package, just alter the .rgu with the new data. These packages are also referred to as "Delta" packages. The concept is similar to the unix implementation of Diff/Patch. The file extension is .cab.pku

EDIT2: I've extracted both .cab.pku files, and one gave me a single .dsm, while the other gave me a .dsm, a DLL relating to EZinput, and a .rgu file containing registry entries. Not very useful information, but still nice to see that AT&T is taking the initiative to use this underused Windows Mobile feature.
Question is how to get these updates installed onto a ROM other than the stock one. It seems to do some type of validation before installation, and refuses to install on a ROM other than the stock one.
I suppose chefs will have to cook these fixes in, or someone will need to create a CAB or learn how to mess with the Image Update fixes?
Just as a caution, don't try to apply these updates to a reconstructed ATT Tilt2 ROM (in case you flashed to cooked ROMS and then went back to one that is supposed to be like retail).
The HTC hotfix installation starts as the verification passes, but then at least on my device, it was stuck in a reboot loop. I had to flash to another cooked ROM and then flash back.
It would be interesting if we can find a way to update TouchFlo to the latest release using this method. That way you can update touchFlo while keeping AT&T's stock rom and not have to flash a new one.

Unfortunately, it's extremely unlikely that will happen with AT&T's stock ROM. Image Updates are signed, and are checked against certs that are cooked into the ROM. This ensures that only the OEM or carrier can release these updates (kinda like how ROMs are signed so only the OEM or carrier can release updates). The Image Updates will refuse to install if the certificates can't verify the update, and there's no way we're going to get AT&T's security certificates. So unless someone gets those, you're out of luck.
I installed the 2 fixes that where on the htc website but now when i go to the start menu i only get a 3 row menu, how do i change it back to a 4 row menu
Okay here's a problem, I installed the SMS fix that was on HTC's website, that went without a hitch, but when I tried to install the inconsistent Caller ID hotfix, it said it was incompatible with my device. I have the stock ATT rom. Anyone else have this issue?

How old are your devices? This fix might be for older devices. I had my original Tilt 2 replaced due to a faulty ROM or radio chip which would boot loop my device before the red version numbers would show on the AT&T logo boot screen. The version numbers on the new Tilt 2 seem to be updated. I would guess if I were to run the updates, I would be in the same boat...

Hello!
I'm using a HTC Desire with a the "Pre-rooted Stock Froyo" ROM by teppic74.
Today I've received an OTA update notification from HTC, which I haven't accepted yet because it would probably break my ROM (by the way, it seems like teppic didn't disable the OTA update notifications in this ROM).
The size of the update is 6.34 MB.
Has anyone else received the OTA update? Anyone knows what's updated?
EDIT: As I've read somewhere, it increases the software version number to 2.29.405.14 from 2.29.405.05

I don't know what changes in functionality this update is supposed to bring.
Hey i just received the system update actually its called "system enhancement 6.34 MB"
And i ofc clicked on yes, phone restards and then when the "package icon" aka the lets say progress bar starts it just stops and a "!" along with an android maskot appears... cant update, my phone is rooted tho...so, any suggestions or news to this update in general i would appreciate!
ps.i hope you get what i wanted to say
I've been seeing this in other forum when I googled it and looks like no one doesn't have any idea about what the update contains.. yet.
It's nice to see the good old Froyo still getting "enhancements".
Old? Sure. Good? Not by a long shot.
I only had Froyo for a couple of weeks before I rooted and flashed Gingerbread and never used Eclair sooo I'll take your word for it. Haha
If your using a custom RoM, you should never apply OTA updates.
@DroidZone: maybe citing the message just before yours isn't necessary? Just asking.
@shankly1985: you're not helping us who are dealing with this problem as I can pretty much certify we all know that: just read the original post and other comments.
I registered here to ask about this and maybe have an answer. The thing is I am NOT using a custom ROM. I am using the original HTC ROM that came with my Desire 14 months ago. BUT I have rooted the phone in anticipation of installing MIUI – I was desperately looking for a two-way recording of phone calls that never made it into MIUI. So I've installed ClockWorkMod as well as ROM Manager. I too have experienced exactly what @Drizzline describes. System update notification, phone restarting, exclamation icon that seems to be from ClockWorkMod and not from the OS.
My question is: how can I apply the system update, knowing that I have never installed a custom ROM on my device nor made any changes to the factory-installed – and subsequently updated – vendor-provided ROM?

@vodoomoth, Stop telling people what to do and what not to.. Who do you think you are, barging into a forum and being a pompous ass with your first post?
If telling that I think repeating a the whole post above might not be necessary when I reply with one line is telling people what to do and what not to do, then yes, I am a pompous ass. No, actually, I am a stupid arrogant pompous ass. But I didn't write the Netiquette, I just read it and it's pretty standard in forums. Sorry to be the one to remind you that there is no need to cite an entire message and reply with just one single word and a question mark!
I doubt you were talking about me telling shankly1985 that his "do not apply OTA updates on custom ROMs" was not helping. Oh yes, I am not the person who hasn't read the opening post where that concern is pretty obvious.
However, I don't see how my post is summed up as "barging into" a forum. I didn't know some behaviors were not allowed in first posts but only in later posts. Sorry for that again. I guess I should have not written a first post.
To other people, sorry for the off-topic.

This looks like a cheap rip-off. I'm quite sure you payed somewhere around the 150 euro mark for that phone. No way you can expect it to have the same specs as the "real" htc one x.
Just curious which phone is yours the White one or the Grey one in the pictures?
By viewing your photo, i would said that it is "Keeping it Real Fake" version of HTC One X.. Do compare the rows of front speaker holes beside front facing camera with any One X images yourself.
Yeah, that's definitely not the real thing, would be interested to see what hardware is inside it though. Perhaps you could install this app and post up the output?

My mistake was to delete also internal SD, so I lost the backup, which I did, with the recovery that is installed. Now I'm really messed up, and I can not use the phone. I tried to give the phone to a friend, he is more experienced, I hope will help me.:crying:
If any of you can give me tips, they are really appreciated!

Sorry, but your device seems to be a CHINA FAKE.
It's not a real HTC device, its only a plagiarism.
How do I find out the hardware mounted ?
Yes, I realized !
one question, you can have a program to find out what there inside, such as hardware?
If the file has been modified build.prop, what I read on the screen is not real !!!

Looks like your phone is not a HTC Onex
The info you have provided doesn't add up.
HTC uses hboot and fastboot. Yours uses uboot.
HTC kernels do not say HTC kernel in their info

Yeah, that's definitely not the real thing, would be interested to see what hardware is inside it though. Perhaps you could install this app and post up the output?

why waste your time on this clone, it is what is.
no way this could be the original One X...look at the second picture, the one with the earpice grill.. Original One X has smaller holes in the earpiece grill..
all the viperx version reboots while receiving calls! but sometimes it wont reboots....
i've changed it with other rom problem solved, but i love viperx more.... anyone know how to fix it?
Which one are you on now, the JB ? And if you are using the aosp lockscreen mod in the venom tweaks....turn it off and use the standard lockscreen. Might solve your issue
Also Make sure you have deleted the OTA update file from downloads folder.
Apparently recovery goes hyper if you dont (according to viperx thread )
A noobs solution
My One X rebooted on every incoming call, but it didn't do that from the start. So, I tried to backtrack any changes that I might have done to the setting and found that I had enabled “AOSP Lockscreen”.
After unchecking this setting everything was back to normal again.
Maybe this can be of some help to others...

Wow, 3.7.0 (my version) is very old...well at least I didn't post a stupid question, just a stupid answer...
What are you saying ! Ow wow another sarcastic reply !? You have it on 3.7.0 ? Then just answer that you still have that problem. Did you install 3.7.0 with a full wipe ? Did you restore stuff from previous builts ?
I will advise you strongly to leave the sarcasm behind if it was ment that way in the first place. It won't get you far here. Then its better to give more info on your situation so we can come up with better solutions. I really hope this is a case of misunderstanding and bad communication.
Edit : I ticked the aosp lockscreen tweak and tested it, no random reboots on 3.7.0 what so ever.

No, that was no sarcasm, I'm completely new to rooting phones and I thought progress was very quick and that my version had become obsolete very fast, or that I downloaded an old version.
I still have the problem, well not after disabling the setting...
I did a full wipe.
...but I flashed an old version, noticed my mistake, and then flashed 3.7.0.
The problem is that I know I did a full wipe before flashing the old version, but I'm not 100 per cent sure that I did it the second time. It sounds like missed it. So starting all over again would solve my problem? No short cuts?
Sorry about the misunderstanding!
Misunderstandings do happen in life mate, that's why i stated it as nicely i could
I think a full wipe and reinstall of 3.7.0 might solve it. I have a clean installed viper rom and tested now with several workcalls,no issue

Sorry, but it didn't solve the problem. I still get reboots when the lock screen is enabled. Even though I swiped and reinstalled.
FWIW
Hmm buggers, i can't really help you on this because i can't reproduce the reboots. Weird ! But at least thanks for testing

I'm now pretty sure what the problem is.
It's a conflict between the "built-in" screen lock (like pin code or face recognition) and the Viper screen lock. At least on my phone it's impossible to run both (in my case Viper and pin code) simultaneously.

I’ve been a Beta tester for a an American software company during a period of 7-8 years and I’ve written some simple plug-ins for their web design software. So, I tried to use that experience to do some testing and trying to minimize the number of factors that could trigger the problem.
What I did was a factory reset, a wipe and then I installed 3.7.0.
Before installing any apps, launchers and whatnot, I tried running the phone with both pin code and Viper screen lock enabled.
The result was the same every time.
I then tried to enabled the two settings in different orders, first pin code, then Viper and vice versa, but to no avail.
My conclusion, whatever it’s worth, is that it’s easy to get a problem when two pieces of code are trying to manage the same event. Maybe it’s possible to find the line/lines in the code that might trigger the conflict..?
…or maybe Viper just don’t like Sweden/Swedes?
Well, with a little (bad) luck maybe some other people run into this problem, but there might be very few of us who use Viper in this type of configuration…
I don’t think I can add anything more than this, so I’ll leave this issue in the competent hands of those who wrote Viper.
Thanks!

Hi,
Did it work well before?
Did you do a full fw flashing before?
Have you tried to change the radio in *#*#4636#*#* yet?

No Full Flashing before or even now
I tried to change Radio, thanks for your trick, but it does not work!!!!
I still need your help
It's a weird problem. I think you should do a full fw flashing if you bought a 2nd phone. If it's a brand new one, I have no idea about this situation :"|

Have you tried a factory reset and use a different Google account? It could be restoring a setting or app causing it

I can't help further unless you cooperate to troubleshoot. When you are able to factory reset to nuke any stuck bits and start fresh on a new Google account, (not a secondary one you already have, a brand new one) then we can try pulling a log from a fresh install to see what is blocking it.
Edit: the factory reset would need to be followed up with a fastboot -w command to ensure everything is wiped. If you don't want to do this, then you cannot be helped.

Did you buy it online?
Besides the model, what is your software channel and build number for your phone?
i had similar problem and factory reset still resulted with the same issue. I had to do a full retail rom reinstallation and that fixed the problem.

Yes, I bought it online from coolicool.com, this is first time ever I bought one Moto from outside of USA,
Software Channel: retcn
Build Number: OPXS27.109-52-10
Thanks for helping me
The model and build is exactly like mine when I first got it.
First off, I think it's how they flashed the rom that's causing the instability. Your phone would most likely have it's bootloader unlocked like mine but they did something to hide the warning message.
Please read my thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/help/request-advice-experts-tourbleshooting-t3928349
You will see that I flashed a retail rom using instructions from this thread. It would be step E of the thread. Worked like a charm for me in fixing all the unstable apps
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/how-to/guides-bootloader-twrp-custom-roms-root-t3805737
You will have to flash your phone so you really have to follow the step by
step instructions.
I did it for the first time in my thread, it's not hard to do step E if you follow it step by step.
Hah, mine was from coolicool with random issues too. Emailed them, no response. Paypal claim, no respond. Full refund!
Will follow the guide above.
Just check first if bootloader is unlocked. (That's step a). Before you proceed to step E.
I'm assuming it's already unlocked because we have the same issues, build and model number. Mine was unlocked when I received mine. Also from China/hk

why it's unlocked?
it's not Original and it's not from Motorola?
I saw in bootloader it's flashing_unlocked and I was surprised why unlocked????
are you sure if I do these steps problem will solve and also are you sure after installing new stock ROM dual sim work well?

This is my pure speculation. the reason why its unlocked is because it was originally a chinese phone with chinese roms that doesnt have playstore. That must have been the original setting. Since they want to sell it to the international market, they had to unlock the phone and voiding the warranty, flash it with the new international rom before selling it.
Since its unlocked, essentially the warranty on your phone is void. The issue i found is that they must have flashed the wrong rom so its causing all these apps to crash.
Again thats all speculation and theory.
Now the only reason why I'm suggesting this method with you is because I had the same issue, I researched and tried the solution I posted. It worked for me. If you are going to flash a stock rom for the first time, you just do your research and do it one step at a time. Instructions have been provided in the second link (step E) including all the files you require to install the retail rom. It worked for me. I can only suggest, but it's up for you to give it a go.
I loaded the latest RETAIL (-05) factory image and all apps are functioning fine now. Issue was supplier had flashed -06 ROM, assuming because it said APAC in the description.
happy it worked

I was so confused during the last month. The random apps that were impacted by the issue didn't make sense...
Banking app
ABC Kids Listen App
Kids Daycare App
FuelCheck
Images on CyberFlix
Only one of the devs managed to get their app working for me in the odd state it was in. DayCare app of all things!
Thanks for posting, I wouldn't have thought to reflash or even look at the region code of the flashed rom compared to the compatible one.

Yeah it was so random, i really thought i got a faulty phone. Mine was all GPS/ internet related (Uber, Spotify, maps)
Nothing made sense but I took the research and decided to flash to stock rom, discovering they installed the wrong ROM and HIDING the fact the bootloader was unlocked. Definitely not your average issue and hopefully this would help other people who are in similar situation buying from any china/hk store.
I even bought the moto mods, and they are working perfectly after reflashing. Pretty happy with overall result.
