Hey all,
Coming from a Fascinate, and just got a used Nexus. I know if I buy a subsidized phone on Verizon, I'll lose my unlimited. But if I activate this phone (since it's 4g), will I lose unlimited? If so, that sucks, and guess I'll be getting rid of it!
I believe you don't lose your unlimited that way.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It's my understanding that as long as you dont buy the phone subsidized from VZW that you can keep your unlimited.
That's my understanding also, but it wouldn't hurt to go into the store and make 110% sure that that's the case. Sometimes an unknowing CS rep will change your plan in the move to provision an LTE SIM for you, and you can't get the unlimited data back. Not gonna happen often, but you still hear stories.
I think you'll lose it going from 3g to 4g... there doesnt exist a 4g unlimited plan anymore.
You'll likely be limited to 3g or forced to move to a share everything plan.
Activated it at Verizon with no problems, and kept unlimited data.
Another question - it's been activated now for about 45 minutes, but I can't send/receive messages. I can use the internet, but messages and calls all fail. She said that it could take up to 2 hours. I've NEVER had a phone take more than 5 minutes until I was able to use it. What's going on here?

They should swap it for free. When I first activated my 4g card, 4g service was down, so i needed to activate my old 3g phone thus rendering my new sim card useless. Took it to vz and they just swamped out the 4g sim.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk 2
It can sometimes take a little bit for the full activation to go through with the SIM card. SMS and calls run over the 3G/1X network, and I believe the part you need to process is what takes the longest. I got a new SIM and it took about an hour or two for full service to come back, though data worked immediately.
Got a new sim from Verizon, and nothing.. Still have internet access, but no cell. I've only given it a half hour or so, so I'll give the two hour thing a shot.
Have you updated to 4.1.1 yet? Because when I got my phone I rooted then activated it and didn't update and I could not keep data connection for the life of me.

Let it sit for a while and flashed a new ROM, and once it came back on, it was flooded with texts! So not sure if it was a ROM problem or just cause it was activated for about an hour. Thanks everyone for the help!

Just wanted to jump in, and let anyone know, that my locked to tmobile SG2 running Dark Slide works 100% with Straight Talk's new Bring Your Own Phone.
I even ported my number, took 4 hours for everything including data to be working 100%, and I am still getting 4G speeds.
And my phone is still locked to tmobile.
Hope this helps.
Wait you still get 4g? How? Straight talk doesn't offer any 4g plans.

ST uses Tmo, or ATT towers, so when I ordered my sim, I specified I had a TMO-Compatable phone.

I'm a little n00b at straight talk, but do they offer unlimited data or something?
Sorry, Ive been busy.
Average results for speed....
Now, keep in mind, im in the middle of nowhere in north texas, so standing in the living room might get better than going outside, or 3 feet to the left..

6.20 3.21
5.33 1.16

so, it is all over the place, but then again I am a 1000 miles from nowhere, next time I go to say, Mkinney, or even the Plano area, Ill probably get the 21+ speeds. Also, I flashed the Blaze Modem, switched to the WCDMA settings, just kinda messing around for now to see what I may get, Ive never really monitored my speeds while on TMO, phone is always connected wifi at home, and even then, ill use my tablet, so data doesnt matter to me.
Voice and SMS/MMS are flawless, and that matters to me.
So can the phone roam on att towers?

I plan on making the switch as well, I actually talked to them last night and the lady told me that all I have to do is just order the sim for Tmobile. Can't wait to see if this is just as good as Tmobile.

I'm happy with it so far, going from 220.00 a month for 2 lines to under 100.00 makes me happy.
However, wife's G2X has no data connection, gonna have to spend some time on her phone tonight.

Quick question, are you still able to tether?
My White ICS
I heard they only give you about 3gb of data but I'm considering it now since they have unlimited everything for $45 and I have had a tendency to eat my 100 minutes these past two months.

I just ported my number tonight. I gave up lte for a 45 a month plan. I switched to att in 08 for the iphone 3g. I paid 70 unlimited talk, 30 unlimited data, 5 for 200 texts add taxes around 120. 120×12=1440 a year opposed to 45×12=540. That's a 900 savings a yr. I can buy a phone with no contract with what I save. I'll give up lte speed for 900, I still get 4g with around 2-3 mbps download and 1 mbps upload. I'm on wifi at home and even if I do a little tethering on my cm9 touchpad at work I wont go over straight talks watchful eyes for people who have 4-10 gb of data usage a month. I definitely broke the att shackles tonight and have no complaints. Even if someone has to pay back early termination fees you have to do the math and see if you're still saving over a year or two. 1440 a year ×2= 2880; 540×2= 1080 for 2 years of a contract I will have saved 1800.

Yes, as long as your phone can. BUT, they don't allow it and I've read they have cut services off for people who rack up 4-10 gb of data usage a month.

New to the gnex here. I did some searching and found some threads about switching the normal data plan that most of our ATT phones get stuck with over to the 4g hspa+ plans. It looks like a bit of a pain since I don't know anyone with a 4g phone to swap sim cards into (I do still have my iPhone 4s but not sure if att will fall for me giving them that imie to add back onto the account). So my question is: is it really worth it to have my data plans switched?
Thanks!!

Device: Samsung Galaxy S3 (no root)
Carrier: AT&T
I lost my LTE service overnight in a spot which had consistent LTE speeds of 15-20mb down since I bought the Galaxy S3. At&T said that they did not throttle me, since I was well under my 5GB limit, so I'm not sure what the heck is going on. They also stated that there were no known outages in this area. It's been over a week since I've seen any LTE in my office. No structural changes to the building. No towers were erected in this area within the last week.
Does anyone know any tips or tricks to fixing this LTE issue?
Global Warming? :silly:
Any advice is better than no advice. Thanks!
If you provide me with a fix that resolves my issue, I will donate $5 to your PayPal account. :good: :good:
UPDATE: Apparently there are several people complaining about this issue. It seems as if At&t is having issues with the LTE service here in Los Angeles.
UPDATE (9.24.12): At&t gave up on trying to repair the issue. There is a brand new GS3 somewhere in the FEDex office with my name on it. I will still donate the money to one person from this thread for trying. I want to thank you all for all of your help.
AT&T will not admit they throttled you - its a customer service nightmare for them to have to deal with irate customers.
Their policy is to tell you there is nothing wrong on their end and to return/exchange your sim and/or phone for a new one instead of dealing with the "i'm throttled" yelling.
its actually kind of smart ,as im sure they would otherwise be getting 10's of thousands of calls a month regarding throttling.
how fast are your speeds now? and what is your current data usage at?
---
so that AT&T wouldn't have to admit they were throttling my sister (same account) they replaced her iphone for a brand new (refurb) and gave us $150 credit on the account for "our troubles"
next day she sold her iphone for $450 on craigslist and got an android =)

I'm getting anywhere between 100kb - 2mb...intermittent. Current Data Usage is 10MB out of 5GB. I used to get a steady 20MB while the device was sitting on my desk. Thanks
You're not throttled.. Being throttled you would be at 512k capped though speed tests could report 500-600k.
Anything above 1mb you're 100%not capped and something else is going on

Another long shot, despite the obvious software tips your trying. Could it possibly be your sim card? Theoretically the sim could be bad. First though I would also go to settings -> mobile networks and make sure you have lte enabled. Stupid I know. And if you have battery saver enabled it might be disabling your lte to conserve battery life.
I can't see how a factory reset would help. Try the above first.

If the new sim does not work, a factory reset is the way to go.
However if neither work, get a new phone in warranty.

From what I have read that no longer works.

When do they begin to throttle your data speeds? AT&T is 5GB (thank god today started a new billing cycle)..
I read on Slashdot that att doesn't track port 53 (dns) traffic.. To cheat you could in theory just get a tiered plan and do all Web traffic through a port 53 proxy....

Not unless you go past your limit. It mostly happens with AT&T and Sprint carriers, where if they somehow detect that you are using a hotspot (bit unlikely with a custom rom, but it can happen), then they will charge you.

you guys just watch out cause here soon sprint is going to be shutting down what they call "server farms" running on thier new network. Not sure what all qualifies you for that class but just make sure you dont abuse it too much.

I would say you are very lucky. My step son was downloading about the same amount. And although they didn't mention tethering. Well here the past month or so I've taken it easy. My schedule at worked changed so I didn't have the time for things I did. I guess I got lucky.
