Our phone has a feature called Quicklinks, whereby if you pressed the search button plus a hardware keyboard key, you could quickly launch applications (i.e. search+e = email app).
Now, a bug in the software meant that the phone would sometimes think the search button was constantly pressed, so you would open the keyboard to answer to an SMS for example, and find yourself launching an app instead. The only workaround was to use the on-screen keyboard.
Before, in GB, this functionality could be disabled by going to Settings->Applications and disabling QuickLinks. This made the problem go away.
------
Enter ICS. The feature, with the same bug is still there, but I cannot find the QuickLinks entry in Settings->Applications. I've looked everywhere and I cannot find it.
Does anybody know where it is or how to disable it on the unusable official build of ICS?

Rather frustrating issue. Not sure if this is ROM related (I'm using AOKP M5) but I'm constantly crashing when typing in the Google Search widget or Places. It seems to happen more frequently when I type quickly, although it's also happened when typing slowly at times. This happens no matter if I use stock keyboard or SwiftKey.
Also, when entering the keyboard's number layout, it won't stay in the numbered layout. Will usually default back to the lettered layout while I'm typing. I'll have to fight with it to try and quickly enter in an address, but then it'll crash.
I don't get any force close errors for either google search widget or places, it just crashes to the homescreen. It doesn't happen anywhere else, not messages or any other search section, just google search widget and places.
Any ideas?
I've cleared data/cache for all related google apps including the keyboard apps and still the same thing. It's rendered those apps completely useless.
It could be not an issue with the ROM. I was having the same problem, but I was hitting the Home button accidentally.
It happens because the spacebar is right above the Home Key. You will need to adjust the way you type to prevent your fingers from pressing the Home key rather than the space button.
Actually, that's not the case at all. I've spammed typing various letters and it reproduces the crash. I don't have to be anywhere near the spacebar/home softkey for this to occur. This also doesn't explain why the numbered layout won't stay in numbered layout (will always switched to lettered mode after two numbers are typed).
I think if it were that easy of a mistake, it would be replicated everywhere, but it only occurs when I'm typing in Places or Google Search Widget.
Actually, now that I think of it, I used to get similar errors on my D2, so I stopped using it altogether. It's only just now that I have a layout on my Gnex where it's convenient for me to use, only it doesn't work! lol
I have installed Gooogle Now on my stock rooted Touchwiz ROM from the famous Google Now thread.
My only issue is something is hardcoded in the ROM to not allow me to change what app double tapping home starts. There are no apps on the market that say they can do this that work either. I have tried them all.
My issue now is that if I double tap Google Now's "Voice dialer" only shows up which is an activity within the Now application. I have turned s-voice off as I think Now is better. So basically double tapping (which is also the same thing as holding down a bluetooth device's button for voice search to come up) I can only tell it to call people using the Google Now app. Other people on AOSP ROMs can get the full Now Voice Search to show up when double tapping but something in Touchwiz always defaults it just to the "voice dialer" instead. If I uninstall Now I get an option on double tap to choose s-voice or the normal ICS voice search so I know it can be changed but that same window does not come up asking which default task to use when double tapping with Now installed. I have cleared all defaults also, and that window still doesn't pop up.
So something in the Touchwiz ROM prevents me changing what double tap does, or it is something in Now, but I find that unlikely since other people with other devices (even the SII running touchwiz) can change the function.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have installed the Mimicry ROM and it is great, but I have an issue that sometimes the keyboard shortcuts are activated and I cant turn them off. Simply pressing B will bring up browser etc.
This is annoying and I have to reboot the phone to get rid of it. The virtual keyboard works fine, but the physical keyboard has the shortcuts. In older Gingerbread versions I just went to Applications -> Quick Launch and removed the shortcuts, but I cant seem to find a way on the ICS-style mimicry ROM
Anyone any ideas?
I think the shortcuts are activated / deactivated by hitting the search key. Next time try to hit the search key (to deactivate shortcuts) instead of reboot.
It hasnt happened today yet, but I was typing and kept randomly pressing the Search key and nothing has happened, so I dont think that is the cause of the on/off shortcuts
Those are definetly shortcut features, cant recall specificaly what to do with mimicry but i believe you have to hit alt then the magnifing glass to activate or turn off

Thanks for the replies, but function and search key doesn't replicate the shortcuts, it allows me to type as normal
I haven't suffered from the stuck shortcuts issue since gb myself, but when it happens just hit the search key to fix it. As for the shortcuts themselves, they're actually built into Android. You activate them by hitting search+ letter. With Andromadus Audacity / Mimicry you can find the shortcuts menu under Settings -> Andromadus -> Quick Launch

Hello everyone,
While I was testing my phone and pressing everywhere, I might found a feature I didn't read anywhere.
I know there is the ZenMotion, and it works great. By writing a "C" on the screen, you launch the camera app. But I don't talk of that (and I disabled this shortcut)
After locking the screen, press the volume button twice (down-down, up-up or even up-down and down-up). It launches also the camera app.
This isn't a ZenMotion feature (I disabled everything and the shortcut still works).
Is someone having this shortcut too? Did someone know how to disable the shorctcut?

Click to collapse
The setting for the double click volume key to launch camera from sleep is in Settings -> Lock Screen
At least on the US version running the WW firmware. See attached image.
Ohhh. Got it. The setting is here.
Thanks!
Is anyone else having the issue of their on screen nav buttons cutting off part of the google maps screen? When I'm navigating I can't see the ETA section or hit the 'X' to close navigation. Really annoying. I'm wondering if it's a maps app issue or possibly the ROM I'm using somehow. I'm on the latest ICE custom ROM. Also, it might be related, but when the pop up asking which app i want to use for various options pops up (ie when I click a number to call it asks if I want to use phone or skype) I can't click on the 'Just Once' or 'Always' option because it makes me hit the nav keys (even though I am hitting the 'Always' selection). Thanks for any help.
