[Q] Page down button in Chrome or standard browser - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi there,
I'm missing a page up/down button when browsing. Is there such a thing or maybe an app or a trick to get such a thing?
The volume buttons would be the most obvious choice.
I'm using Chrome in JB 4.1.1, but is keen on chancing browser just to get the function.

Hi.
I don't know when it was added, but in Chrome for Android you can do page up/down by tapping on the edge of a webpage.
It doesn't work when you're zoomed in, and of course you have to tap above or below the scrolling indicator's position.
Cheers,
Phil.

Volume buttons up/down navigation?

I apologize if this is a repeat or an obvious question, but...
Has anyone had any success remapping the volume buttons to be page up/page down or simply up/down for any purpose? I'm specifically thinking of eBook readers that require tapping or swiping the screen currently to flip pages. But also perhaps browsers as well.
We saw this on WinMo devices back in the day, but I've never seen it on Android. Is it impossible, difficult, or simply not in demand?
Would appreciate any insight, and thanks for all you do.
I'm thinking an app would be able to hook the volume keys, and override their functionality.
But it would not be so easy to hook that functionality from outside the app you want to affect. You could also remap the volume keys to page up/down, assuming you have root.
Don't know about global remapping, but apps often do it themselves. For example Dolphin Browser HD has settings to scroll the page with vol up/down.

Thank you!
Is there a built-in page up/page down function to which they could be mapped?
It would be more useful to make it either application-specific or a global app to grab them based on which app was running, but remapping might be worth it.
I'd love to see an app that would use the volume buttons as a physical camera shutter button. So much better than an onscreen button.

Thank you so much for the help! That's halfway to solving all my problems!
Page up/page down on a browser would be great as well, but I'm very glad to have this.
Thanks again!

Change Volume buttons to scroll buttons

Hi there,
i love the standardbrowser and all other features from the desire but i would althou love a little app that allow me to change the keys into scroll mode as excample
Press + or - for about 2 Seconds and then the buttons are Mapped for scrolling (would be awsome like Dolphin browser) in my humble opinion the zoom and everything is on the original Browser much better
but besides that it would be althou awsome for almost every other applikation ..
is there a app or solution out there?
I'm with you there, it would be nice to give the optic scroll button a use when the phone isn't in camera mode too

[Q] No dedicated shortcut buttons for Browser/Launcher/Phone in Froyo

Has anyone else found that they don't have the three dedicated buttons on the bottom of the home page for Browser, Launcher and Phone, as was advertised in the Froyo features?
Mine still has the normal "Up arrow" on the left that goes to All Apps, the big "Phone" button in the middle, and the "+" button on the right to add an object to the home page (all exactly the same as in 2.1).
Is it just me, or is this the case with everyone? Can we get the new buttons? If so, how?

[Q] How to close the stock browser?

I'm trying to get used to the stock browser because Dolphin is still having issues with re-texting when you pinch to zoom, and I can't figure out how to close the browser. With Dolphin, you can hold the back button, and it will turn off, so that when you reopen it it takes you to your home page. With the stock browser, if you go back it just goes back all the way through all of the pages you've looked at, until you go through them all and it turns off. It's like it doesn't want to you to close the browser at all, but if you just go to home when you're done with the browser, it just reopens the last page you looked at instead of your home page. Am I missing something glaringly obvious?
Don't think you are missing anything, but it is a little annoying to me as well. Best thing I can suggest is to hit the home selection in the browser by hitting menu/more/home...not great, but it works (still extra touches though...more than necessary) It's nice if you want to multitask, but very limiting if you're just trying to end your session and have your next launch bring you to your home page..
a dev needs to create a quit/exit button for the stock browser; right now, the only way to close it is by keep hitting the back button until it closes and it takes awhile for that;
uh, the home key will get you out of the browser. maybe i'm misunderstanding...
Hitting the back button until it "closes" on the stock browser would be like hitting back button on your desktop browser, then hitting minimize when there are no more entries in history. The process will still stay until Android decides to kill it.
There are 2 issues being confused here:
1. If you want to truly stop the process, you can use one of the capable task managers to explicitly do so;
2. If you want to just have a window open the home page with no "back history" then hitting the back button will accomplish that. Sometimes the back history has too many entries for this to be practical. So, alternatively, you can:
- go to Menu > Windows
- hit the "+" to add a window
- Menu > Windows
- close out the previous window keeping the new one only
- back button to "close" the browser
Not as nice as other browsers, but hope this helps.

What I was looking for was a more elegant solution to your 2 above (although that works too, I'll try it for a while and see how much of a pita it is) - I have no problem with it ruinnning in the background as long as it went back to the home page whenever I went back to it. I was hoping that there was a button I was missing that essentially took you out of the browser back to home and reset the browser back to the home page at the same time.
This is why I don't use the default browser.

I'd love to go back to Dolphin HD, but until they update to fix re-texting on pinch to zoom, the stock browser is just faster and smoother.

[Q] Raising the virtual keyboard in Chrome.

Is there still any way to bring up the virtual keyboard under Chrome (on the new N7 at least), even when you are not on a text box element?
Some sites capture key presses to do various activities, and the inability to use the keyboard is a definite problem.
An example being ajaxterm (implements a remote terminal emulator via javascript and AJAX, quite handy going through overly restrictive firewalls), no keyboard renders the entire thing useless.
Any suggestions?
I'm not sure. The best solution I can think of off the top of my head is to use a custom rom with button mapping. You can set press and hold functions to software keys and hardware (I think).
I'd say a long press on the Recents button to pull up the IME. Typically Back(Hold) is force close, Home(Back) is Search, nothing is assigned to recents(Hold).
That or an app that sits in the notification tray that has a button for IME....
Or again, the quick notification toggles on custom Roms has an IME enable/disable, I think.
