[Q] LTE roll outs - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay, question here about 4G and 4GLTE, I bought an S3 as an upgrade and enjoy the phone but the 3G only sucks (until LTE rolls out here) so I switched back to my S2 which has 4G. My question is when LTE rolls out here, (been pushed back again and again) will I receive a notification so I will know to switch back, also when LTE goes live what do I have to do to my phone for it to start working on the LTE network? PRL?
Thanks from the Sprint Nashville market

LTE for Sprint was projected to be in Orlando Florida by now but it was pushed back until the end of the year makes me sad.
LTE is the only thing I miss about Verizon. Speeds are just amazing!
As soon as Sprint really kicks their LTE Roll out into high gear they will be one rocking company! Unlimited Data FTW!

Sigh...nothing even close to the LA area...although WiMAX never made it to where I live anyway, so I'm not holding my breath that LTE will...but still ...hopeful

Tell my boss that! We both got a gs3 but im on boost mobile and my 3g is fastee than his lol

LTE didn't quite work...
LTE was supposed to roll out in Waco, TX, and Sprint's map claims it's there, but my GS3 wouldnt pick it up... :/ Any ideas why?

Did you turn on the LTE radio? Mine was disabled by default. I haven't turned it on yet since I expect we won't get it for a while here.

If I am running Blazer ROM or any of the other customs, do I have to go back to stock to do PRL or Profile updates in order for LTE to work?

Nope. you can update both without any problems. I'm on Blazer ROM as well.
also... make sure that under *Menu >>More Settings >>Mobile networks >>Network Mode >> you have it set to LTE/CDMA

I'm one of those whose testing created some of Austin's Sensorly tracks. I think there are several things going on:
1) The number of live LTE towers in Austin and Round Rock is still extremely small and the coverage is thin. Even some of the tracks I recorded, I cannot always replicate later.
2) These sites are still officially in development, so they may go offline sometimes. The tracks you see on Sensorly are not random, but reflect testing deliberately performed by geek enthusiasts to discover the unofficial LTE signals.
3) Sensorly does not record signal strength, only points where it detected any LTE at all. So these tracks may be minimal strength. And the points get extrapolated to fuzzy blobs in the Sensorly map display, which are even worse when zoomed out at all on the website. If your home is inside one of the blobs, that is an overgeneralized anomaly. But somebody probably detected LTE one time on a nearby street.
4) The GS3, even when running the latest LI3 firmware with all the fixes, still has trouble reconnecting to LTE again after it loses the signal. Sometimes I have to stop and toggle the data radio to force it to reacquire 4G.
So overall, GS3 users should not look at today's Sensorly maps of the area and expect them to describe routine LTE service yet.
p.s. If you are serious about tracking the Sprint LTE rollout, don't expect much information in this generalized forum. Go to S4GRU.com.

Well, it's a different division of Samsung that does it. It also includes Ericson. So....don't extrapolate too much on that, other than Sprint and Samsung have a fantastic relationship.
The other thing is, our phone is designed to only utilize a certain protocol on the 800mhz band....now this article was a little over my head, but it falls in line with what we've been trained on in regards to NV: we're deploying all of our protocols across all of our spectrum, but this will require newer devices designed to do so

As far as needing new devices to run on different radio bands, this is not necessarily the case... Now granted there will have to be some sort of radio update for the older devices, but, that can easily be pushed out ota, other wise how would you think aosp roms would work? So a radio update, and Walla, now the device can receive on set spectrum...

We have Wimax down here in SD, as long as you are on the SDSU campus, or on a boat in the bay.
I was pretty excited to see SD on the list too, then realized that I'll be in Vegas by then. Well, at least I'll have Wimax to hold me over out there.

I'm in San Diego too and I actually noticed the 4G at SDSU while I was touring there, haha. There's also a small area near my neighborhood with 4G coverage, but it's pretty useless since I have wifi when I'm here. It might be because there's a sprint store really close by, but who knows. I hope it gets rolled out in SD soon though.

It's not that simple, of course our phone picks up 800, 1.9, and 2.5, but the hardware has to be present to be able to decode the different protocols on those bands. Hence, our phone is not LTE capable because it doesn't have an LTE radio, yet LTE will be on the 1.9 and our device uses the 1.9 pretty heavily.
And, I literally just went over the training that talks about Sprint deploying multiple protocols on the same bands yesterday...it was stated pretty explicitly that future devices will be the ones to take advantage of that tech. Its OK, that's pretty far down the road.

From what I've been reading, our phones are the last ones that Sprint will ever make compatible to WiMax ... from now on, all the new phones that Sprint will introduce (with 4G suport) will use the LTE radio.
What a surprise (not), I'm one of the first LTE markets.
Grand total of 4G in our area? 3 LTE signals, 2 HSPA+ signals, and the Wimax signal.

Sprint is following its own independent 4G LTE deployment.
Clearwire's 4G LTE deployment (starting June 2013) will first be overlaid its existing Wimax sites.

Thanks for sharing! Now that I see Sprint can't prioritize because of lack of funding or just poor management (Palmdale and Lancaster before Orange County, don't make me laugh Sprint) I'll be heading over to Verizon to use their LTE network that is working NOW.
I'm rich so I'll the pay the extra, it's worth it to not have to settle for 3rd best anymore. It's really getting old.
After 5 years with Sprint they still can't into 2nd gear.

Keeping with you our phone can't support lte, but in terms of deployment no one knows. My friend got the thunderbolt with verizon when it first came out and as soon as verizon put the hardware up they turned on the service, sometimes it went down but wasn't "official" available until the whole region was covered and had 99% uptime.
I know our et4g can't take advantage of lte, but now that the nexus is out, I'm wondering if it would pick up an lte signal. I'm sure within the next few days we will have reports from Los Angeles based nexus users one way or another.

They probably won't. Pretty sure they're going to make sure 3g speeds and towers are up and completed before turning on LTE. Less problems to deal with and more resources in case any problems occur ala verizon outages.
Anyways... there's hardly any sprint LTE phones out there so i doubt the cost of upkeep justifies turning these things on yet....
Correct me if i'm wrong.

It's all on one tower now, once the tower is on and its on. As soon as the tower is upgraded LTE will go live with the rest of the service. They may not officially announce its live but it will be. Unlike wimax where it was on a separate tower from sprint 1x and 3g the LTE will be on the same infrastructure as 1x-Advanced and 3g its all part of the Network Vision rollout/expansion

Listen, Sprint needs to make sure that when the switch is flipped, it goes as smoothly as possible. I can't fault our engineers for wanting to test and test and test, and then test some more. The delays are definitely not due to a lack of towers going up, S4GRU has plenty of evidence of that.
I for one would much rather the anticipation pay off with a good roll out rather than a rushed half-assed one.

I knew wimax was going to fail from the beginning. The high frequency range is total utter shat for large blanketing coverage. LTE should be a little better atleast, and then the 800Mhz network that is rolling out should be amazing. A nice large blanket for most areas.

Wimax was built by Clearwire, not Sprint.
I'm looking forward to hopefully improved building signal penetration with 800 band. It still might suck in elevators and buildings with lots of steel infrastructure.
I just hope its a consistent signal and we get to enjoy a call without the auto tune filter from the bad reception.

LTE in not officially live markets

I live in the DC area where LTE has not officially launched (though it has been announced as a market that will have it in the coming months). I've found that if I switch the phone to "CDMA only," wait for the 3G icon to disappear, then switch it back to "CDMA/LTE," if there is a Sprint LTE signal available, the OG will pick it up and use it. Without toggling, the OG stays on 3G. I am hoping that this toggling is only necessary because Sprint has not officially flipped the switch in my area. I have yet to use the phone in a market that officially has LTE, but will be sure to check if the OG automatically picks up 4G without toggling the next time I am in an official LTE market such as Baltimore.

Around Del Amo Mall in Torrance. Driving up Prarie Ave to the the 405. Signal strength fluctuated all the time. I got a signal but Speed Test app couldn't find a server so couldn't run it.

Anyone notice their service getting worse?

At first I thought it might have been my rom, but it seems it's happening with my GF's note 2 also.
Coverage we used to receive in some areas is almost completely gone. It will show signal and the 4g symbol but basically have NO internet service whatsoever.
On a better note, we've been receiving coverage in some areas we don't usually have it.
I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing due to the attempts to upgrade towers for LTE.
I don't know if it's because of the UVBMB4 update, but t-mobile service has been pretty crappy lately. Period.
We're in the San Gabriel Valley area.
Link for older UVALL4 modem below, people seem to experience better service

Definitely have noticed a deterioration of service over the past month here in NYC.
Its because for some reason that new LTE APN is slow on HSPA+.. unless you have LTE in your area switch to the EPC APN. You can find the settings online. Its litter ally consistently a difference of 6+ mbps I have extensively speed tested lol..... click thanks if this helped

YES! My service has sucked royally for the past month or so. Data latency/hangups/slowness, and the signal will just completely go away sometimes. I noticed that it started as soon as I flashed the most recent radio too, I'm about to go back to the old one.
Count me in, even my regular phone reception went from 4 bars no 1 or 0!
Can anyone point to towards old radio to flash? I go from no signal downstairs to full bars upstairs...theres an obv issue with new radio.
Yup I've noticed this beginning this week I've made zero changes to the phone. I used to get full bars at work and this week it bounces between full and 1 bar regularly. Theure messing with towers for sure

However... in my corner big red has same problems as they wanted to not have tons of towers in this corner and theres only a ATT Tower....for a decent distance. basically reception fringe. though I am a new subscriber so i haven't experienced normal TMO, I literally got my device yesterday around 6pmish but it def wasn't normal and flashing previous radio did fix it like it solved everyone elses issue

Yup I've noticed this beginning this week I've made zero changes to the phone. I used to get full bars at work and this week it bounces between full and 1 bar regularly. Theure messing with towers for sure

my problems started last friday. i have limited to no service at all; no data, no voice, even no signal at times (circle with line through it, not just no bars). when i do get a signal, the phone refuses to register on the network. when im at home, i have intermittent service. i miss calls, texts wont send, if i do get a working call, it drops after a bit. there are times when it works fine, even on LTE but it never last long. went to the tmo store last night and they gave me a new sim which didnt do squat. already done the factory reset option (twice). phone has never been rooted, all stock. im in the KC metro so not like in the middle of nowhere. they said my next step is a warranty replacement phone if the sim didnt help. not sure if my problem is at all related to everyone elses in this thread, but yeah, service has sucked.
One of the issues, especially if you switch from 4g to edge to gprs a lot, is a setting in the new modem.
It's something called acquisition order. It has 3 settings:automatic, gsm_umts, umts_gsm. In short it tells the phone what kind of network to prefer. It will search for and use that type of network first.
Prior to the latest update it was set to auto. Now it is set to prefer umts. For some reason this has caused an issue I've come to call phantom 4g. Where it'll say 4g with no bars and no data service.
That is my guess. I'll look into it further.

Thanks guys for the heads up on switching to an older radio, I dont have LTE in Miami yet and was having slow internet for the last 3 weeks, I just switched and wow! What a difference. I'm also using the Epic APN.
I also noticed that speeds were degraded after the update. However, there is a simply fix to make your web a tad bit faster....
Go into your network settings, and switch your mobile network from LTE/4g/3g/2g to just 4G/3g/2g
your device will stop looking for an LTE connection and will just utilize HSPA+
Made a world of a difference on my own device. Connecting to the play store, opening web pages, everything was right back to where it was before the update.
Obviously if you live in an LTE area, there is no need to do this...

I believe my service has suffered as well. Before the last update that enabled our Lte radios, I had great speeds, now it's slowed Way down. I'm in San Diego CA. Hope that it's just as the Op said, LTE towers being updated and what not.

So I'm gonna be a noob here for a sec. When people say they are flashing the previous radio (I'm referencing the link that was posted) are people just flashing the modem from the section under the most recent? (the one with the January date on it). Just thought I would ask. Better safe than sorry. Thanks!

Yup, radio is synonymous with modem in this case. UVALL4 is the previous version.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
