Pardon my GSIII Newbiness. I just recently came from the Epic 4G community and I have a couple questions.
There was a list of file names and apps that could safely be removed from the stock Epic 4G rom, is there something like that for the GSIII?
A few apps I couldn't find when trying to delete and uninstall them, are there hidden locations for some of the factory installed apps?
I'm also wondering what are some of the top roms and kernels according to the GSIII Community. Basically I'm looking for one that possibly allows overclocking, yet has the sprint bloatwares removed. Changeable boot screens would be nice as well.
I like most of the features that are offered, but there's a few I don't use.
I wish we had a custom search engine just for ROMs that would let you pick the features you want and builds a custom list.
I'd try FreeGS3 from with AGAT's kernel if you want OC. The kernel you will find in original development section.

Not exhaustive, but a start. As usual, research beforehand and make sure you're removing only harmless stuff.
[If you're interested in a bloatless or as close to stock Android ROM, try Blackbean4 ROM with the KT747 kernel. It's a Jelly Bean leak, runs phenomenal and it's only 153MB vs nearly 850MB for Team Sonic FreeGS3 TouchWiz-based ROM. I used both and currently on Blackbean4. It's a great ROM really.]

Thanks to you both for replying, I have at least a week to decide now. My SIII had to fly back to Samsung for USB port Repairs. At least I still got my good old reliable Epic 4G for now. On a side note, I never realized how much the Epic 4G sucked until I used my S3

Welcome to the bright side!! I came from the original Epic to the GS3 as well... and yeah, using my GS3 for a bit then using my Epic for a few minutes made me realize how slow it was
I was running CM9 on my Epic and now I'm running AOSP on my GS3 and love it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798981 )
Although--I hate to admit it--TouchWiz on the GS3 isn't all that bad...
Epic sucks?
Maybe too bulky because the qwerty kb. But it has a lot of development, easy to use if you are like me, I touch like five letters at a time in touch kb. But the OG Epic will never sucks.
Now. Try first any TW based ROM if you want to full enjoy your GS3.
And FreeGS3 is 800+mb because the aroma installer. You must try it.

I had an opportunity to play around a bit with a friend's epic today.
The included email client (whatever samsung provides) seemed quite a bit better layed out than the htc one.
Has anyone ported the email client from the epic to the evo?
I'd love to try out. Simply copying the Email.apk file from the epic rom doesn't seem to work.

You would need to ask a dev to port this in the theme and app section.. it would probably take a lot of work as the service.jar , lib files and such would need to be changed to work specifically with the evo...

I like the clock app from my "old" SGS2.
It has alarm, world clock, stop watch and timer in one app.
Does anyone know if i have a chance to get it running on my Galaxy Nexus? Or does it require Touchwiz?
I tried copying ClockPackage.apk from an SGS2 ROM and an Galaxy Note ROM (because this one should be optimized for Galaxy Nexus resolution) to /system/app/ and match permissions. Also tried clearing cache and dalvik cache und remove the original DeskClockGoogle.apk.
Unfortunately Samsung Clock App does not appear in the app drawer.
I'm using Pauls deodexed Ir4 ROM.
Any ideas?
If Devs wants to check, here are the apks:
SGS: http://www.multiupload.com/TV704SULWH
Galaxy Note: http://www.multiupload.com/N7SC5W7892
hopefully can see this apk soon...

Did you change permissions. That may work.

It probably requires custom Samsung framework, aka TouchWiz.

Yeah, maybe it requeires Touchwiz. But if this would be case shouldn't it at least appear in the app drawer?
Would be nice if a Dev could have a look at the apks and tell us if it really need Touchwiz or not.
Has anyone else tried to get it running?
Yes, I would love to see that clock too! It reminds me one I had on HTC phone (part of Sense).
Now I have to use separate stopwatch when boiling eggs which is not great.
It's amazing there is no all in one clock app in the Market yet, like the one we had on SGS2 phones.
i can already tell you it is indeed TouchWiz dependent.
and i agree, Google needs to do more work on their widgets, specifically the clock. there should be a copious amount of options imo, including digital, font/color changing, as well as a timer, stopwatch and world clock.
still lots of stuff they can add. they're getting there, just slowly
Very bad news, but thanks for clearing it up, mrvirginia.
If someone can modify it to work without TW or knows a similar app, please let me know.
Would like to see it too. Clean and simply GUI with all things necessary! Nearly
I love that clock, specially the smart alarm that gently wakes me up. I would like to have it working on CM9. I'm trying and if I get it I'll let u know. But if someone achieve this pls let us know!!
Google should even link the calendar and tasks in someway to the clock when setting alarms. But at least a smart alarm with nice sounds and widget with custom options at least to contrast background.
There is a new effort to port touchwiz to ICS. I am trying to determine how to get the clockpackage.apk to install on it. I am using a captivate rom with the port backed in.
The thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456724
[UPGRADE]Samsung Apps Upgrade for ALL Ice Cream Sandwich ROMS - Tested and working!!!
Yeah, the clock on my SGS2 was just great. I've had to roll with multiple other apps just to take the place of that original clock
I also miss my day/night/weather Wind Mill live wallpaper.that was the best.

sounds like we might also need a deodexed version. On to deodexing...
I've been searching for almost two days for an inverted Google Talk app that will actually work on the GS3. I've tried the ones posted by Rootzwiki, and some CWM flashables posted in these forums for various ROMs, but nothing has worked yet. I've ended up with non-inverted apps or immediate forced closes.
I just stumbled across some random rom on Youtube, of all places, for the Galaxy Nexus that claimed to have all inverted apps. It had a download link for the apps only, so I figured, what the hell? I'll give it a shot. I just pulled the Talk.apk out of the flashable zip and put it in system/app the old fashioned way, and now I have a working, inverted talk app! I've gotta give thanks to the guy who made the rom I pulled the app from. You can see his work here:
http://droidmodderx.com/galaxynexus/rom-eclipse-v1-0-aosp-4-0-4-4512
This is working for me on AOKP from Task and Ktoonsez, so I don't know if it'll work on a stock based rom. Be sure to back everything up and go through the usual precautions before trying this out. The app is attached below.
I added a couple of screenshots. Sorry if they're not the greatest quality, or the censor bars are too obtrusive. I'm on my work laptop and the only thing I have to edit images is Powerpoint

Inverted Talk works perfectly fine for me.
Sent from my unlocked Motorola Atrix.
the rootz wiki one worked fine for me.
I am trying to create a ROM for the SGH-T989D and I would like to use a combination of Touchwiz apps (dialer, contacts) and AOSP apps (mms, calendar). I was wondering if the apks can simply be put into the system/app folder or if special tweaking of the framework is required to get them to play nice with each other. I am starting from the Telus stock ICS ROM.
I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Some might play nicely. But you will most likely have to edit each apk to make them work. And if you're cooking a cm10 ROM, good luck. Since touch wiz is ics, and cm10 is jelly bean. You will have many issues with force closes and even the app installing

Inverted Talk for TW JB
xxsicknessxx,
I may be grabbing at straws here but, I have looked extensively and posted for info on an inverted version of Talk that works on TW Rom. I see many people recommending (in error) versions for AOSP or deodexed versions that crash a stock TW phone.
If you happen to have one of these, info on where it can be found or even an explanation of why it has not been done, it would be much appreciated.
I am using several other inverted apps (even 4.2 versions) that work just fine. Confusing!
Thanks
Your inverted contacts db link dosent work
