Thin green line at the top of the screen - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone experiencing thin line at the top of the screen it appears green at black background and as a brighter colour on different backgrounds
I'm wondering is it software issue or rather hardware one
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

That just started happening to me too...I think I've just gotten used to it - though it's still annoying. I haven't looked into/researched a fix yet.

Can you post a picture? This seems very odd, I'm not sure if it's dead pixels or some other kind of glitch.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Is brightness control (or whatever it's called in the rom you're using) enabled perhaps?

It seems to come and go, worse at certain times. Right now I can barely see it, but I will post a screenshot as soon as it comes back.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

If it's hardware issue the screenshot won't show the line at all but if you can truly capture that line in a screenshot chances are it's a software fault.

Same here the line doesn't show up in screen shot
Could anyone who's experiencing the issue could post which Rom and kernel you been using?
I'm using modaco prebake and Franco kernel

You're right nothing showed up with the screen shot when it came back last night. I'm running the latest Bugless Beast 4.1 with the new radios.

I've checked new Ron same issue
If you will go to landscape mode and watch a video probably you'll realize as me that the line is at the top and bottom of the screen. The u can notice that when you press navigation keys as well
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

Are you on a custom ROM and are you sure its not the battery option selected that shows a green line across the top of the screen? It changes depending on your battery percent.

I haven't really played around with better battery stats because I get pretty good charges out of the battery, but played a video earlier in landscape and the green line stayed in the same place - thinking hardware issue.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Running stock Jelly been just noticed this today, have had the phone since June I think. Phone is always in its leather case/wallet with a screen protector so no phone damage.
And it has the same issue, green line or bright colors base on the background. just one line about as thick as the pull down notification bar. It got a bit better during the day, green line in portrait disappeared, now I just notice it when horizontal. but this is the first day.
Anyone send theirs in yet for repair?

I also noticed that on my GNex as well. Big probability that it's a hardware issue, like a line of dead pixels. Doesn't bother me much though, as it's so thin I sometimes don't notice it's there. But when my OC mode gets activated, it does seem distracting @[email protected]

Why not call Samsung for warranty repair? If you are under warranty, they'll let you know to send it in.
I called (888)987-4357 for my repair and they were actually really helpful. They're located in Texas FYI

Hi!
I had the same line. It can be clearly seen when the camera is turned on, or other apps in full screen mode. Line can be green, or red, or white.
Line appears for the first time when it was low temperature outside (-20 С, i think...), two weeks ago. I took the phone out of my pocket to read message, and saw the green line at top of display.
Now, if the phone placed in a warm room, the line becomes a barely visible. In a cool place it becomes clear visible.
Today I went to the service. They reinstalled the firmware, but the line is still on the display. They said that it is hard to see this line, and maybe they must to ask Samsung about this line. They are not sure that this line is a malfunction. At the same time, they are ready to replace the display (after arriving from Samsung's stock). Not clear for me...
I'll go to the service again in a week, and will report about result.
Good luck and sorry for my English.

I have the same issue. The Green Line on top appears when it's cold outside and normally its just brighter line which you can see only in landscape mode.
I think the only thing you can do is replace the screen
Going tomorrow to service and will let you know after

Hi!
I went to the service again. After four days my phone returned with a new display. The line has disappeared, everything is fine!
P.S. This repair was under warranty.

I have a strange line on the top but i never saw it green. It looks like a line of pixels with different brightness.
update1: just sent my GN to customer service
update2: came back with a new full working screen

I have only noticed this when i viewed the video file on the computer using VLC. When i took a shapshot of the video, and then enlarged the picture to fit on desktop i could see the green line. It is only one pixel in width, not noticeable otherwise.
Is this really a hardware issue if it is happening to every GN phone in the same location ? I think it is software based. perhaps to make up the right pixel dimension ??

Definitely a vlc software error.! Isn't vlc on android platform still beta?
Try another player and look if you get the same result. There are enough you can choose. MX player for example is a famous one.

Possible screen issue? Or not...

So I bought the phone a few days ago and love it (coming from tmo's vibrant). Yesterday however I started noticing something with the screen that I'm not sure if it applies to all of them in one way or another. When you pull the notification curtain down there appears to be a few discolored (darker) vertical lines that are noticeable where it should be solid gray. Depending on the brightness there more visible and vice-versa. I found a thread on the European version of someone reporting the same thing. The lines are definitely more visible with dimmed screen in low light conditions.
Anyone notice a similar deal?
I have the same issue every now and then. Especially when i open the market, not really a nuisance though.

Yeah I noticed it there and on the xda app as well. Just wondering if that's a defect or not, if so I might exchange it. I could still run in to the same issue though..

Nexus Screen Quality Problem

Morning all, I received my nexus today and wow its fantastic. After getting setup and yada yada I noticed that when I go to take a picture in the dark or view a black image I get a strange black line about 1inch down from the top of the screen all the way across and 1inch Inc vertically inwards from the right side of the screen all the way down. I'm not too sure how to take a screen shot to show you guys/gals. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the pen tile or I've got a dodgy handset. Apart from that the phone is great.
Thanks Nathan

To take a screenshot, hold down the Power button and the volume-down button at the same time.
If you take the screenshot and look at it on another phone/computer and the line isn't there, it's in the screen. Weird that it would only show up when taking a picture or looking at a black image...?
same problem that tmo galaxy s2 had i guess?
i returned my tmo gs2 because of the vertical line problem.

I have taken a screenshot of a pure black image off a screen test app. I also took a picture covering the camera and both are identical. I will attach the images below. Please note you need superman vision to be able to see it. Best viewed in a dark room or squint.

a screenshot won't show any screen defect, you have to take a picture of the screen with another camera

I have the same problem and started a thread about it. I'd wait a week and then return it for an exchange when there is more stock.

can you explain us better what this problem is please?
is it a problem of the screen or a software one?
Does it do this with every picture? I have seen crap digital cameras do that when bright light relects off of the sun.
I have tried to take a picture of the black screen with my gs2 but it won't pick it up at all. Its worse than I thought after i examined it. Its like scattered dots across the majority of the screen. Also when the brightness is set lower the screen goes purple. No true blacks
Edit: Im comparing the xda app from my gs2 and the whites are more cream. I Must have a bad handset as there is no way this is normal.

Its only on a black image I could live with it but after a lot of trouble with my GS2 I'm not letting Samsung win the battle this time. Back to P4U I go.
Can somebody please do me a huge favour and check their nexus for the same fault. I'm pretty sure its not software issue but saves a trip if it is.

Had my galaxy Nexus just over a week now and I got no issues with black lines or the camera....
i've had my nexus for just under a week and i've noticed the black lines as well. if i lower the brightness of the screen the black lines are more visiable and especially against lighter backgrounds. i've only found one article on the web that has highlighted this problem too, but would be interested to see if anyone else is having the same problem

Try this Test, Post your results

Ok, I have just noticed this, not sure what it means. but it's something that can be easily tested by everyone in a few minutes.
While in gentle alarm in nightmode. the screen is all black and the digital clock is shown, I noticed black lines across my screen and really black dots peppered all over the screen, mostly at the top closest to the earphone. I'm thinking they are dead pixels but not sure.
To reproduce it, I downloaded SBMX, a paint app like photoshop. I painted the canvas black, turned off the lights and after my eyes adjusted, I can see the same pattern of black pixels all over the screen. there is one line near the top of the screen that goes right across.
If some people can try this and post your results it would be very appretiated. If they are dead pixels, I will return the phone.
If they were dead pixels you would see them no matter what color the screen was.
My nexus has those spots while displaying black. My Vibrant also have the dots. Its just how amoleds are, I'm not sure about the amoled plus

It's how the screen technology is.. we had a lot of threads like this a while ago.
The conclusion was: "When are you ever going to be looking at your phone in pitch black, on a black screen, with the brightness set to 1?"
From what I have read it has something to do with Super Amoled and the glue used.
My Nexus is not near as bad as the Razr I had. Check out the Razr thread on this.
Ocassionally I would notice on my Razr when using the phone at night, without having to "look" for it.
I can honestly say that I have to try hard to see this on the Nexus, and I have never noticed it in general use, even at night. It shouldn't keep you from enjoying your phone!
edit: so much for that build quality argument they keep throwing around
lol had to say it.
I noticed this on mine in bed the other night ,it is all along one edge in landscape mode. can't see it at all in normal use though...

Nexus display problem.

Hello
I`ve just noticed that my galaxy nexus has some wierd "ghost yellow menus" when everithing is white.
I have attached some pictures.
What can I do to get ridd of them?
Looks like screen burn-in, which is unavoidable with an AMOLED display. My GNex has similar banding from the notification bar, soft-key bar, and the address bar in Chrome (which is why I've stopped using Chrome and reverted to stock Browser.)
I don't know if there's a way to fix it, but the fact is that if you have a static image displayed on the screen, it will retain itself, much like a plasma TV.
Man I hate the blue burn in the notification bar and the nav bar
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium HD app
Isnt it the rest of the screen that have some kind of 'burn in' Or more specific, the rest of the screen is degenerated/worn? The yellow hue wasnt present on my first GN when I got it. I have two GNs, the newest is more bluish/cleaner white - crisper..

Rotate the screen every now and then. If yoru phone is still under warranty, you can ask Samsung to replace it for you. Hopefully the new batch or SAMOLED are less prone to burn in.

Yeah. The pixels of these displays wear out slowly but surely with use (and subpixels of a certain color - green, I believe, although I'm not 100% sure right now - wear out faster than the others), but since the notification and navigation bars are mostly completely black (meaning those pixels are turned off and barely get used at all) those areas don't get worn out like the rest of the display does. So it's not that the bars are "burned" into the screen, it's rather that those areas are in better condition than the rest of the display.

I was thinking that too but did you guys notice that when the screen is displaying back it is not absolutely black? The pixels do glow a little bit for faster screen switching (it was mentioned in some other posts). I think it could also be this static glow that causes the burn in.
What's this about a new batch? Did Samsung start using new displays with the GalNex recently?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Sorry, I meant like a production batch. Don't thing they will use new displays with the Gnex.
I have insurance thru VZW which gives me a 2 year warrantly. I already had VZW replace 2 Gnex's, because of screen burn in, and if I get burn in again, I'll have them replace it again. They really don't give you a problem with replacing the phone, just tell them you did all like troubleshooting methods like factory data reset etc. and the burn in remains. They will send you a "like new" refurbished replacement. All the replacements I have got have been in great condition. If you are under warranty do not tolerate screen burn in, get it replaced immediately.
I've seen 5 gnex and each one of them had different screen. I mean every one looked different, worse or better. It looks like producing a good quality amoled display is very difficult or Samsung has very low QA for them... I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just use it... It's not that you often display static full screen gray background.

I think it's more common with the people who brag about their 3 or more hours of on screen time a day.
Those of us who are more like 30 mins to an hour a day of on screen time are not going to be affected near as fast.

Bad Screen? blue line...

I noticed this blue line while watching a movie. Only noticeable in dark or black color. bad lcd? Right side while vertical.
Do a search is a common issue mine included. Triggered by cpu load. When the tablet is on Idol with the screen off for a. Of time and you go back to the same area where you saw the blue line you will see it is gone. But once you have been running a video or a game for a while it will reappear. From test I have done it seems like when the tablet gets off approximately 28 degrees centigrade that's when it starts to appear so it might be heat related to the CPU or GPU

I got a super sweet deal on my G Pad from a second-hand store here in the UK, it was in mint condition and had no signs of wear at all. I sold my Nexus 7 for a decent price too so, the blue line present on mine doesn't really bother me. It's troublesome for sure but, it's hardly noticeable most of the time but, it's a strange one for sure. If the line were thicker or more noticeable I would be far more annoyed by it.
My screen does not have the blue line my sn starts with 602.. I've only played with it for a few days... I did watch a lot of videos at 1080p today, but I left the aspect ratio alone. Do you guys get the blue line if you don't stretch the video to full screen and leave the black bars there?
