Evo won't finish update and won't go into Bootloader - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife purchased a used EVO 4g on ebay. Clean esn but rooted. She took it to Sprint and they activated it for her no problems. She received notice today of an update. She tried to update the phone, but shortly after starting she gets the android character with the white triangle and yellow exclamation point and the update won't finish. When she bought the phone she asked him to replace it back to stock before shipping. He stated that he did. I can't get into bootloader to check the S-on/off.

First rule of thumb with a rooted phone: never accept an OTA update, as this is a sure-fire way to lose root. What ROM was on the phone when she received the phone? Also, when you try to power up the phone, what happens? Will the phone boot up or what?

Not sure which ROM is on the phone. I will check and post it in a few. The phone works fine. Starts up and shuts down like it is supposed to. Just won't go into bootloader so i can check to see if it is still rooted. She was told he put it back to stock. Is there another way to tell for this phone?

Depending upon what ROM is on the phone, the 'Fastboot' setting may be checked (Fastboot is an option that allows you to power on the phone more quickly when it's off, but to me it always was more trouble than it's worth and won't let you load into the bootloader when you use the volume down+power option). You can go to Menu>Settings>Application Settings and see if Fastboot is on. If it's on, turn it off, power the phone down, then press volume down+power to get into the bootloader. To see what ROM the phone is on, let the phone boot up and go to Menu>Settings>About Phone and scroll through there to see see what software is on the phone.
The phone is probably on Hboot 2.18, which can be rooted using the HTCDev method, if you're not familiar with it. Here's a link to the guide here on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473373

Ok, i have attached a picture of the bootloader screen i was able to get to after turning off the fastboot. If i read this right it is still rooted. The software number is 4.67.651.3 Android Version 2.3.5. It has H-Boot 2.10. We would like to put it back to complete stock. Which thread do i need to go to get that info? Thank you for your help.

I found this Thread on unrooting the Evo. Just double checking, this one should work for the hboot version 2.10 correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141&highlight=hboot+2+10

Don't unroot just use captain throwbacks stock Rom its the newest version and if she doesn't like the Rom switch her to CM7 or if she doesn't like messing with stuff and want something simple let her try the mookee Rom.
Sorry if I'm spelling things wrong I'm just getting back to a sense Rom and using the stock keyboard is hard to get used to.

She has noticed several things going on with this phone. Out of nowhere it will reboot. If she makes a call it will reboot after she hangs up. If she puts the phone in vibrate, it will continuously vibrate until you turn it off. That is why I'm wanting to go back to stock.

As suggested above, I would go with a stock rooted ROM, which will allow you to keep root but give you pretty much everything the stock ROM has. The issues most likely lie within the current ROM on the phone and may be alleviated by going to another ROM.

Were you running an RUU when thus happened? Was that how you were getting back to stock? How long has it been on that screen? If your sure its stuck, and is idle, I would do a battery pull, and then see if you can get to the bootloader. If you can, try running the RUU again, but put the phone in fastbood mode when you run the RUU. See if a second time gets it.

I was running ruu and it failed. i have tried several times since including battery pulls and no luck. I keep trying to get to the bootloader but its stuck at that screen. It does not show up in my computer either when i plug it in but using an ruu still works.
When trying to get to bootloader, did you push power / volume down after phone was off? If not, pull battery. Put back in and then power/volume down.
You probably already did this but it sort of sounded like you tried getting to bootloader from the screen you were stuck on.

The error i get when ruu fails is error 110 file open error. The rom update utility cannot open the requested files or the files are damaged. the ruu cannot continue with the update. Please get a complete ruu package and try again.

When you shut your Evo off, and plug it into a wall (AC) plug, do you get a charging led? If you can still run an RUU, it sounds like maybe the one you are using is corrupt, or the wrong one all together. Do you know your bootloader version, software version, and radio versions? Likely you need to download the RUU that matches (or is very close to) your current versions.
I'm on the app, but would otherwise link you to a thread. In the dev section, search for "supersonic shipped roms", thread started by Esp28

Yea, the rooting world between different manufacturers differs greatly, apparently. The state you're currently in, you probably have no choice but to run the RUU again. Once you get it to successfully run, and you boot up, back to stock, you'll most likely still be S-off. Now, that's not necessarily bad, unless you're going to take your evo into sprint for any reason. If you leave it S off, if you ever want to reroot, all you'd have to do is flash a PC36IMG of a custom recovery, using the bootloader. At that point, you could flash a ROM or whatever. Also, if you do want to return it to S on, once the RUU completes and you can boot, flash a PC36IMG of a recovery, using the bootloader. At that point, flash the unrevoked S on tool, using recovery. Once you confirm that S is back to ON, then run the RUU again. Then you'll be back to stock, unrooted, S on.

I'm confused, haha. Nothing bad will happen with the RUU when you're sleeping? I think you do need some sleep brotha! Once you successfully run the RUU, and return to stock, you'll most likely still be S off, since you didn't flash the S on tool. This mean's you'll be on a stock ROM, with S off, and no recovery. Nothing bad will happen by leaving it like this, so long as you don't take it to Sprint with S off. Now, if you do just plan on staying stock for a while, you may want to return to S-on, just in case any unpredictable catastrophic events occur, you're better off having S-on, in case you need to take it back to Sprint. You can always root again rather easily. So I guess my suggestion is to flash a recovery once you're up and running, flash the S on tool, and then run the RUU again. Just to be safe. If you want to root again, you know how
Edit: ^^^^All that is providing you get the RUU to run successfully, which I think you will. You just need a good copy of the right version. If that doesn't work, don't forget you have other options. Such as flashing an RUU as a PC36IMG from the bootloader. Also, you can run an RUU with fastboot. So there is a plan B and C if that doesn't work.

[Q] G2 flashing orange and green led lights, won't turn on.

my phone(tmo g2,rooted running extrahotsauce rom) is flashing the green and orange lights now that its charging...the battery was fine and i was doing a backup using clockword mod recovery and once that occured i rebooted, then rebooted again into recovery and from then on the phone hasn't turned back on. i put it on charge at first and no light, left it on for a bit and now there's green and orange led lights blinking continuosly, any one know the cause? and more important, the solution? any help would be much appreciated, thanks
someone posted in the evo 4g forums saying the phone was overheating? doubt that was the issue. but now that it isn't working,i am hoping it is
Turned on but kept shutting down on its own, somehow got it into clockwork mod recovery, wiped data and cache(after backing it up), wanted to install the mexdroid rom and the phone shut off again at the end of the wipe, now it just turns on at the htc screen.
when i hold volume+power and get to the boot screen,it wont let me scroll up and down using volume, instead it automatically just tries to update.
stuck at htc screen, just wanna try to restore my phone, any help would be great. thanks and sorry for being such a damn noob
Do you have a pc10img on your sd card? If so, you need to get that off of there to get into recovery. Also, it sounds like something is seriously wrong with the battery and you should replace it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

i have a spare battery, just cant seem to locate it at the moment, might need to buy one if i can't find it soon
nvmm figured it out, lets try it
OMG you are the greatest, its working so far...do i need to put the pc10img back on the sd card in order to install a rom or no?well it wouldn't get to the recovery screen with it on the sd card, sorry i need to get some sleep
NVM,i left pc10img off of the sd card installed the rom,but it wouldn't start, just stayed at the htc screen. I put that file back on the sdcard and it's still just stuck at the white htc screen, know what the issue might be? i have a custom boot animation in there, would that matter?
when i get to the boot screen,it says, s-on at the top,is that why?
If you're s-on then you're not rooted or at least truly rooted, like if you did a temp root with visionary. I would suggest finding the tmo post ota ROM in the development section dated from December, it'll be a PC10IMG, and rooting that with gfree from the wiki. When you have done all that, install ROM Manager from the Market. When you open the app click "Flash Recovery"and you'll be ableto install ROM's from ClockworkMod recovery.
I apologize if you already know some of this stuff, but you sound a bit confused. Hope this helps.

no need to apologize, you're only helping. i told my friend about the issue, and he reccomended a thread on xda that explains how to turn s-off(and root/unroot). it had been rooted, but yeah like you said it was temp rooted using visionary. ill try these methods and post results. thanks alot

so that's the link he sent to me, i was skeptical but still went through with it and yet it still says s-on...i need a guide to show me how to fix just that.
i've never used gfree or wiki, nor do i know how or what of them. is there a thread you can direct me to? ill look for it myself but i think if you were to find it,you'd be able to direct me to the right one since im sure there are multiple threads and you seem to know what's happening and what you're doing
ok so i've tried 5 different methods and nothing seems to result with s-off for me. do i need to unroot and reroot?
i know this thread is old but i just got a referb g2 for my wife and it had this same problem. i found this somewhere else and it actually worked:
try taking out the battery and unplug the charger. then press and hold the power button for roughly a min. Then put the battery back in and press the power button. It should work. it worked for me.
i had tried holding the power button for almost a minute with the battery still in with no luck. doing it this way with the battery out worked though.

HELP! Constant Network Error! Tons of info inside, please help :(

I know. It looks like a lengthy read. But all the information you could possibly need I've provided. Please let me know what you think. Also, I've done some searchign around but none of the scenarios I found were a result to flash back to stock sprint RUU.
The error reads as follows: "Attention. A network error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen."
What actually happens: Anytime I open Marketplace, Facebook app, send a message through KakaoTalk or GroupMe, pretty much anything that uses the 3G, 4G data, it doesn't work. The message only comes up when I try to use the marketplace app. All other apps just say there was a connection error, connecting to the server, etc.
When I hit "Retry" it goes right back to the same dialog pop up, as if it doesnt even re"try". The top notification bar goes from 3G and then disappears, then goes from 3G and just continually disappears. It doesnt matter if I have 4G on or WiFi, it will just goes back to 3G when attempting to gain data, and then disappears and the error happens.
My Timeline of events: I first had been running Synergy and everything was fine. Suddenly my wall charger (or any wall charger for that matter) stopped working when plugged in. The car charger still works, but no HTC wall chargers, odd. So I decided to use that insurance for good and bring it into sprint. Gotta unroot and all that jazz first though. I downloaded the "RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe" and found a way to connect my phone to the PC, and finished the wizard. Mind you, before I did this, I went into recovery (while on synergy) and did a dalvik cache wipe, data/factory wipe and cache wipe, then went back into hboot and ran the wizard from there. Everything went fine, the ROM install was successful, I no longer have recovery and it was the stock sprint ROM.
Where things got fishy...: After it was running through all the constant reboots and things, I let the phone sit while I did other things. I came back to it, signed into my gmail and facebook fine, then went to marketplace. I started downloading all my purchased apps and since that was going to take some time, I let it sit again and went off.
Fishy part: I come back to he phone, and would normally just pull down notification taskbar, and hit clear all notifications, since it said a bunch of things had sucessfully installed, but I notcied it also said "System update complete." Hmmm, I didn't start any system update...did it do it automatically? It had to of. I went to check for an OTA (HTC software update) and it found "System upgrade 1.47.651.1 (30.15 MB) - FOTA update." I canceled it since I pretty sure doing an OTA update on a rooted ROM is a no-no.
So what the heck is the problem here, I never had these issues before until I went back to the stock sprint ROM. I've already updated PRL a few times, does nothing.
Should I go back and reflash it and this time make sure it doesnt do a system upgrade until I've turned S-OFF back to S-ON? Once the phone is S-ON is it safe to update OTA?
My About Phone details are a sfollows:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 1.39.00.05.31
Kernal version: 2.6.29-a2443432
Build number: 1.32.651.6 CL171253 release-keys
Software number: 1.32.651.6
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
PRI version: 1.90_003
PRL version: 60683
Any help, advice, suggestions are welcome!!!!! Please hook me up fellas, I'm a little bogged down about the upset.
UPDATE:
Okay. Since I am an impatient person and the last resort was going to re-flash the RUU, I'm just going to do that. And then make sure there is no system update. Once that is done, I'll run the S-ON tool from somewhere, hopefully I won't need recovery for anything, aaand then we'll see where we are. If you're reading all this PLEASE reply with something, anything to let me know somewhere out there is alive! lol, please.
With phone s on and stock ruu loaded it should be fine to accept update...wow u might get froyo lol. And it might help with your data issue...idk much but I know a little.
Edit: maybe try a newer ruu that might help with the data as well. not sure how HTC updates but i think it goes one at a time instead of newest available

Okay, I downloaded the file, put it on SD card, unplugged it, opened hboot and it tried loading the PC36IMG file, it said wrong image or soemthing like that about 6 times and then went back to the regular screen. Although, it has ALWAYS said wrong image for me, so I'm not worried about that.
So now I just went down and hit recovery and its a no go.
OKAY! Now my phone goes straight to the black screen with a Phone on it, and a little red triable with an exclamation point inside everytime now. It used to only come up when i tried going into recovery. now it comes up everytime i load up the phone. does this mean, its bricked...
EDIT: nvm, I was able to load HBOOT thank god, but still having trouble getting the damn recovery.
Well go to amon ra thread in the EVO dev section and dl th pc36img from there...maybe u got a bad dl...

Okay, so downloaded the file "recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img", put it (recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img) on SD, turned phone off, and now powering on in HBOOT.
After its finished doing whatever it does, can i go straight to recovery, or do i need to reboot again for changes to take effect?
Well, it did the wrong image no image thing again like it always does, and then i tried going into recovery aaaand it didnt work.

Yyyeeaaah, about that. I forgot to rename it. *facepalm* Just did it, powering in through HBOOT AGAIN. still did the wrong image no image thing, but this time, about it actually did some progress bar thing on the right hand side. but just for a second, and then went back to saying it was the wrong image or no image.
I highlighted the entier file name "recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img" and renamed it to "PC36IMG.ZIP" and then it turned into a zip file. restarted the phone in nboot and didnt work.

Okay, so check it out.
I ran the "RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_rele ase_171253.exe" before and flashed that, but i remember that i had to unroot my gf's phone back in june, so i went to my downlaod list and saw that i used "RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe"
So I just did that, and the 3G data seems to be fine. [email protected] Now onward to unrooting.
Now that I have stock ROM, do I just run a S-ON tool and fix it? But I dont have custom recovery, wtf this is effing confusing...

AH HA! lol, okay cool. So when I download this, and put it on my SD and then reboot into hboot, i'll have custom recovery? and then i can run s-on with 3.70? then eventually update OTA...?
Maybe I am wrong and it won't flash recovery with a non rooted ROM but I thought would because of s-off it should... Should of flashed the s on before u ran the ruu. It's signed with HTC keys and would of been fine.

YOU DID IT! Horrayy!!!! Thank you my kind, kind kind kind sir!
I am on recovery right now. So now do i follow these instructions...
How to Unroot the HTC EVO 4G
◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►
Unrevoked S-On Tool
PC36IMG
◄●SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you're comfortable with everything Android related(flashing, recovery, etc.) then its just 2 simple steps:
If you used Unrevoked Forever at any time, flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip from recovery until hboot shows S-ON
Flash the PC36IMG.zip from hboot
◄●DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you need a little more guidance, follow these instructions.
◄●If you have used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Make sure you have downloaded the files linked above. Do not extract them
Connect your phone to your computer via USB and change to "Disk Drive" by dragging down from the notification bar.
If you have NOT used Unrevoked Forever, skip to the instructions below. If you have, transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the root of your sdcard. Do NOT transfer the PC36IMG yet. It'll only cause a hassle and make this take longer.
Once complete, power off the phone
reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Depending on what recovery you're using, you need to flash a zip. Select the unrevoked-foreverson.zip that you just transferred and complete the flash.
When complete, power off the phone. Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. If it says S-ON at the top, select RECOVERY and skip to step 9. If it says S-OFF, repeat steps 5-7 Until it does.
◄●If you have NEVER used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Power off the phone and reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard.
EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery
Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen.
It should check the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the update. Press VOL UP for YES
Once complete, Press VOL UP to reboot.
You are now unrooted!
Have I ever used unrevoked? idk if i have! where do i start, or do i just run the s-on tool...?
Yes as long as u rooted with unrevoked and NOT REVOLUTIONARY... make sure to remove/rename the recovery pc36img on root of SD...once s on is achieved either run a ruu or the pc36img from that thread...off to kickboxing I go glad I could help...

How did u root your phone? When did u root it?

Inc2 SCREWED. Really need to unroot.

Ok so my girlfriend's Dinc2 is screwed up. On Friday it just started wigging out on her. I have beyond enough experience to RUU but I don't need to because we already got sent a warranty phone and she has to send this one in now and I don't want it to be in any other condition than that of which VZW thinks its in. The device's bootloader was unlocked using the HTCdev tool immediately when it was added to HTC's support list for unlocking. After that I rooted it, and I never got around to flashing any custom ROMs because of her HBOOT version, and I was going to use the HBOOT version tool to change the Mainver but I never ended up doing it. So just unlocked, and rooted stock. What the phone does is it will boot up to her regular homescreen and work fine for around 45 seconds, and then the phone powers down and loads the HBOOT screen. The Hboot screen says 'RE-LOCKED; Security Warning' I don't know why it says this, it has said it for a while though so it didn't just happen. When we try to do a factory reset from Recovery and with the phone booted up, it doesn't work. I will go into recovery and press factory reset, and it just takes me immediately back to the recovery screen. Like I said, I can boot the phone up for a few seconds and obviously Superuser is still there. Does anyone know what I could do to get this device unrooted before we put it in the mail? We can't have the phone on for more than 45 seconds to one minute so I think running anything from the terminal is out of the question, as is using adb unless there is a method that takes about 15 seconds. I do not know what to do at this point because we cannot factory reset the device. I'm wondering if I could grab an OTA that breaks root and removes superuser, throw it on the SD card and try to flash the update from the stock recovery. I have never seen any issue like this before so I don't know what direction to go. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. With such a large community, I'm hoping that we can figure something out. Thanks so much in advance.

I sent mine in on insurance while rooted, they didn't do anything. but try flashing a stock ROM, I'm fairly certain it changes it back to factory condition.

They'll flash over it anyways if it's unlocked, and I wouldn't bet on them just taking it, but they might. Can you even get into the bootloader without it rebooting? If you can, try flashing an RUU.

Cannot Access Download Mode

Hey there guys- pretty sure this isn't already posted, but apologies if it is.
Anyway, I bought a used NoteII recently, and there seems to be some weird stuff going on. I recently tried accessing download mode, but each time I do I get kicked into the stock recovery. (There's a little android on it's back with a red triangle with an exclamation mark on it if that helps)
I've also tried using Kies to restore, but after using Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, it says that my device doesn't support that.
Any help is appreciated!

Nope. Nothing. Still get the Stock Recovery menu.
All I want to do it revert back to stock.
From the stock recovery menu, I can apply an update.zip; could I just flash a stock zip?
If you have an external sd card, yes.

You might also try the tool found in this thread. It will get you back to stock and can help you move ahead with rooting etc when you decide to again.
