Install CWM Without Computer - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

So after constantly forgetting to install aeroevan's 6.0.1.1 cwm (Available Here) at night and being frustrated about it while at work...
Disclaimer: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKED DEVICES
The first thing you want to do is look at /cache/recovery/ for a log file. It will list which block device corresponds to which partition (recovery, boot, system...). For me it was /dev/block/mmcblk0p21 but I don't know if it's the same for every Inc 2.
After downloading the .img I renamed it to recovery.img and placed it on the root of the sd card.
I then ran:
Code:
su
cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /dev/block/mmcblk0p21
And now when I reboot to recovery I'm greeted by aeroevan's latest CWM.
Thanks go to aeroevan for creating the recovery.

Good to know. I believe you can also install custom recoveries through ROM Manager and 4ext apps, both of which are available in the Play Store.

ROM Manager will only install their version of CWM which is a few versions behind aeroevan's.
Goo.im manager will only install the latest TWRP.
4ext wants $3. There's 2 problems with this, 1) I couldn't find any evidence that it would let you install a custom recovery and 2) I was able to do it for FREE.

Aeroevan didn't create cwm Guessing that's some kind of modded version
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk 2

Yes. Latest 'official' CWM is 5.0.2.0. Anything newer is a modded version.
JellyBellys makes the 6.x builds (Available Here) but didn't release a non-touch 6.0.1.1 one so aeroevan released one.
Personally I don't know all the differences but I like the non-touch versions and wanted the most up to date I could get. Just wanted to share what I found as far as being able to use a simple cat command to install the recovery as it works for any of them.

4ext has a free versions too...or at least they used to.

According to the 4ext website there is a free version but it only installs the 4ext recovery. NOT custom.
I may give their free one a try but to repeat myself: I started this thread so people would know that the 'cat x.img > /dev/block/recoverypartition' method of installing recoveries works. This way if someone in the future has the same frustration I did about not having access to a computer and wanting a new recovery they can do it.

4ext charges for their control app which can add features, the recovery itself and the straight updater app are free.

i needed this info as well! :good:

Thanks for the how to. It could definitely come in handy for some.
As others have said, 4ext has a free app that installs their recovery. Last I checked their paid app (with controls similar to rom manager) gives a free trial too. I have been using 4ext for over a year and definitely recommend it.

what am i looking for in the log files?
In my log there is /sdcard vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1(null)0
And /sd-ext auto /dev/block/mmcblk0p2(null)0
Could you tell me what command I would input into the terminal?
Ex: cat /sdcard/recovery.img › /dev/block/ (I have no clue which one goes here?)
Thanks!
BTW I have Xperia play r800i (rooted and bootloader=unlocked)
Also I am running cyanogenmod 9 (if any of this helps!)

Cool thanks for the update
In the video you mention that it's difficult (or impossible or complicated, I forget) to flash from Ice Glacier to CM7. But all you've got to do is Flash CWM3, wipe, Flash CM7. Done.

This OP should be updated because the current CW v3.0.0.5 does make backups. The file was patched and is available in the CM7 OP. It would be good to include TrueBlue_Drew's guide on switching between v3.x.x.x and v2.x.x.x of Clockwork Recovery in case people want to go back and forth from Gingy to Froyo. Just a thought.
I am getting ready to flash one of the nightlies and just rooted my MyTouch 4G without issue (rookie at rooting) reading a bunch of articles, I flashed the recovery 3.0.0.5.
Now I see an article saying I need the 3.0.0.2 recovery, then I see another article saying the 3.0.0.5 had be fixed and was OK to use for flashing the new nightlies. My question is the 3.0.0.5 recovery OK to use and will it allow back ups to be flashed as well.
Thank You
Vinny
I hear alot about 3.0.0.5 but I've being flashing all the nightlies up to #22 making back ups clearing cache making back ups etc with 3.0.0.2 if its not broken why fix it ill update to the latest one once is final.

[Q] Which CWM version?

Happy new year all!
Been running rooted stock for a few months now, pretty happy with it despite rosie restarts so I might take the plunge and install virtuous sense 2.0.0.
When I rooted my phone, I used rom manager to install clockworkmod recovery, however I used the latest version at that time which was 5.0.2.7.
My question is, I read that version 5 can be a bit flakey with recoveries, should I install CWM 3.0.2.4 instead as it appears to be the recommended one?
If yes, how does it work with installing another recovery, will it overwrite 5.0.2.7 or will it leave me with two recoveries?
Nothing wrong with 5.0.2.7

Good stuff, just wanted to check that.
Instead of ClockworkMod, I would recommend 4EXT Recovery. It has a touch-based interface, unlike CWM. It also has better support for different filesystems in backups.

Much easier to use, much more options (like recover deleted files).
You could install ROM Manager from Android Market and then install new version from this SW.

Go to 4ext.net and install the free 4EXT Recovery Updater application to your phone. Choose the topmost option, make sure you're in the Touch tab, then tap the newest version to download and install it. It will automatically replace CWM, and it is fully supported in ROM Manager.
I'll throw in for 4EXT as well. Highly recommended.

Hi, any update? I am also on CWM 5.0.2.0 and think to switch to 4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.4 RC 1.

Cwm or twrp???

What are most people using and does it matter that much?? What are the differences?? Cwm or twrp? I'm on twrp because I used qbkings root method and that's what his tutorial had used. I've also seen people say they r using cwm, if I wanted to use that instead, is it OK to use rom manager to flash the recovery? And is rom manager fully functional for the gnexus? I'm sure I could probably test most of this and figure it out with my backup if something goes wrong but sure would b a lot nicer I didn't have to do all that, and maybe this will help someone else too.

i use cwm touch on my gnex, have not tried twrp. i flashed it using fastboot. you can also just try/use it (or other recoveries) without flashing using "fastboot boot [image]". if you flash it be sure to rename/delete recovery-from-boot.p in system as it will otherwise overwrite your custom recovery again once you reboot.

images can be found here: http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
i have not tried the rom manager, i guess its a little bit easier if you dont want to use the command line.
since i have not tried twrp i cannot say exactly what the differences are. but i would guess both can do about the same things as the job for a recovery is quite well defined.
at least 4 for gnex : stock, cwm, cmw touch and twrp. don't really know if there are others...
Well, in my experience TWRP offers many benefits over CWR e.g. being able to be themed, having scripts, 'flashier' GUI, built-in file explorer but in the end I still swapped back to Touch CWR as it's simple, and it has everything that a recovery should do (flash, wipe, mount etc.). TWRP also has a few small bugs here and there but it's great if you want more options and features. Also that animation of booting into recovery bugs the hell out of me, along with the 'Swipe to continue' thing and touch response isn't that good in file lists (like when you have to choose what you want to flash).
It's all up to personal preference so that easiest way is to just flash both and try it yourself.
Twrp is awesome much quicker than cwm my only complaint right now is I can't find any themes for twrp 2.1.2

Yes, your phone is compatible with it. Just put the IMG file on your computer from wherever you are going to be running the fastboot commands. For example, if the IMG file is in your downloads folder on your computer, just cd there in the terminal first.

Flashing now. Will test a nandroid backup as well.
It's nice to see a touch cwm recovery
The touch version downloads as an .NDIF file, but I renamed it and it flashed flawlessly.
Even after flashing CWM's touch recovery 6.0.0.0 for vivow and putting it through its paces, ROM Manager still claims that 5.0.2.0 is the latest and allegedly the installed version.
I'd imagine that an update for ROM Manager is surely in the cards. Patience.
Though my install was successful, when I ran a NANDROID backup, it appeared to freeze on "backing up data...", so I battery-pulled and afterwards it acted like it completed and can be restored. I probably won't test that option...
I tried this. And the fastest Nandroid backups for me was from the latest TWRP. 153 sec! this took like ~400. Although I dont remember the exact number.
Got this installed. Not bad but not to crazy about the huge a$$ font. But, I know its for the touch interface. I might try the non touch later.

The huge buttons if for the touch interface so your fat finger hits the right button. It's like that in all the CWM touch recoveries. As for the non touch recovery, I heard from another user at RootzWiki that the power button ma not work. If it doesn't work for you, let me know and I will look into the problem.

Yes, open a terminal emulator on your phone then get root access:

After that, cd to the location of the .img file: (i.e. if it was on the root of the sd card then...)

I find the easiest installation is using Droid Explorer (a free Windows program), one of whose options is flashing a Recoveryi image..

You should be upgrading from 5.0.2.0 if you have not yet. Koush has not updated CWM for the Incredible 2 for a long time and the latest "official" version is 5.0.2.0. 6.0.0.0 should be bug-free, but let me know if it isn't, as I did not get much of a chance to test my builds. (I used to have an Inc 2, but I sold it and bought a gnex. I just quickly borrowed a friend's inc 2 to test these)

Well, it's made for everyone who understands how to get it on their phone... which I find a bit unfamiliar.
But, Huzzah! It is done (on my test phone, at least).
I tried first flashing the non-touch version, but that would only give me the main UI index and any selection from that would blank the screen (except for the CW icon in the center). Pressing the power button returned me to the UI index, but I couldn't navigate any further than that. Had to pull the battery in order to get back to the OS. Not sure why the phone got so finicky with it- perhaps low space on the SD card. I cleaned up the card a bit, reverted to a backup from a couple days ago, then flashed the touch version from the terminal emulator, which then worked.
As stated above, ROM Manager still reports the installed recovery is 5.0.2.0.
Since I've got two of the same phones on hand (well, one is the evil red color...) I figured I'd do a drag race between 5.0.2.0 and 6.0.0.0 on a backup.
Results- 1:30 vs. 4:00
Very sexy touchy stuff and speedy, too!
Thanks very much for these efforts! They make having this phone a lot of fun!

You dont have CWM yet? If you want you can just download Goomanager from playstore and install TWRP from there. That will give you recovery.
Then you can start playing with your ROMS.
If you want to use Goomanager just install it

I have never used ROM manager. CWM and TWRP do the same thing. They are both recoveries that you can use to back up your ROMs and flash ROMs. I haven't used CWM in awhile as I prefer TWRP. Again they do the same thing but TWRP is a touch recovery. Little easier to use. Once you install either one you just download what ever ROM you want. I store the ROMs on my external SD card. Then you just boot into your recovery and flash the ROM you just downloaded.

I have a quick question about goo manager, I am try to point to my sdcard as the download location and it says that all the paths that I try are not valid. I have tried /storage/extsdcard/apps/goomanager but that wont work. Im not sure what the issue is.

RomManager and GooManager, and ClockWorkMod and TWRP are different kind of softwares.
CWM and TWRP are recoveries, as Jasvncnt1 said above. They are used to flash ROMs into the phone or flashable packages into a custom ROM, backup a ROM, restore a ROM, and some kind of other maintenance (fix permissions, factory reset, format SD card...). They basically are the engine used to customize your phone.
RomManager and GooManager are apps. They basically are front-ends to recoveries usable right from your ROM. (For example, if you flash a ROM from GooManager or RomManager, the app simply reboots the phone into your actual recovery and asks the recovery to proceed with flashing the specified package. Same goes for fix permissions, resets, etc. if they are available in the app.)
These apps also extend recoveries capabilities by offering some other useful functions like dowloading ROM zips from repositories, downloading Gapps packages, checking for available ROM updates...
Some people may find apps like GooManager and RomManager useful, but basically everything available in these apps can be achieved manually right from the recovery.

I believe the download path is case sensitive. extsdcard is a different location than extSdCard. Moreover, the download folder must already exist before you configure it as the prefered download folder in GooManager. So check the following:
1) that you have a /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager folder in your external SD card. If not, create it;
2) that you type exactly /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager, with the uppercase letters at the right place.
