[Q] Have to remove battery for clean LTE connection - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been having some issues with my GSIII and was wondering if I am the only one. I live in Houston where LTE is live and was getting very good speeds 20-30 Mbps down.
All of a sudden I am getting 3G like speeds when connecting to 4G towers. 0.7 to 1.3 Mbps. Ping times are double, connection is very inconsistent for weeks. Finally called Sprint and they said to take out the battery and pop it back in. Viola back to normal speeds.
Unfortunately the next day... same issue. Popping the battery out and back in works but I do not want to be doing this every day to get a solid LTE connection. You guys getting the same issue? I can't understand what would cause this to happen. Is it a design issue with the phone where the LTE chip is not getting enough voltage over time?

Have you tried just rebooting?
The "remove battery for a few" seems to be the cure for most ailments. So you could have some other issue that is affecting your LTE speeds.
Have you checked to see if there are any rogue processes eating memory/cpu? Hows your battery life when the LTE problem happens?

Im on LI8 update and i just tested mine and LTE seems normal.
Dallas, TX..
Maybe someone in Houston can help you test..
But to me it sounds more like a phone issue. Also sounds like its actually on 3G and not 4G. Wonder if its not showing the right icon or not switching properly.

I tried just a reboot multiple times when I first had the issue and nothing worked until I popped the battery. Battery life remains pretty consistent. 12 to 16 hours on average depending on use. Nothing to suggest something eating away at CPU cycles.
You may be right though I'll see what processes I can kill and maybe identify whats causing it.

It does seem like its 3G its connected to instead of 4G. However the upload speeds seem to be faster than 3G. I will get like 0.92 down 1.43 up or 1.02 down and 6.46 up.

Well I don't think I am crazy. Tested this out with a friend who has the same phone with Sprint.
Both getting slow speeds when in 4G coverage. Power cycle or power cycle with removal of battery and both phones are performing better and both getting similar speeds on the same network connected to the same towers. You shouldn't have to power cycle your phone all the time to get a good LTE connection.
This can't be a coincidence because both phones are having the same issue as you can tell by the attached test results. I'm surprised people haven't noticed this issue.

Crazy.
Have you installed the latest update? firmware LI3.
It says it "Improves LTE connection", so its worth a shot.
Try checking for Firmware Updates on the phone, force it to download.

Yeah I updated the firmware a while back when the update was released. Everything is stock and up to date. Tried closing all running apps, clearing ram, setting roaming options to Sprint only/Automatic...
Can't seem to pinpoint the cause of the issue.

Got the OTA update a few days ago and it appears to have fixed the issue. Gone a few days without needing to power down.

On your post above you said you had updated the firmware when it was released/leaked. Was this to LI3?
Im wondering if I have the same issue. I can connect to 4G at my house but speeds are equal or worse than 3G.
I did update the radio when freeza released it, then did the full update after the phone received the update.
Ill try tonight doing the battery removal, see if that improves it.

I thought I had the latest in that post. I had received an update a few weeks back and checked for updates and got nothing. The OTA update I just did was for LI3.
Averaging about 11 Mbps down and 8 Mbps up now. Consistent connections and solid pings. If your speeds kick back up after power cycling I would suggest flashing the stock LI3 again. Its been like 4 days with no problems for me. Before I would have to power cycle at least once a day.

GSM bug XXKK6/UGKL1/XXLA2 radios on T-Mo: switch to 2g = 3mbps cap down when 4g again

This affects both the XXKK6 and UGKL1 radios.
I've opened up a bug ticket for this issue here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25316
From my ticket:
The steps to reproduce are:
Boot the phone with radio in normal mode (NOT 2g only)
- Speed tests will regularly pull down 5+mbps and 2-3mbps up
Switch the radio into 2g only mode
Switch the radio back to normal mode
- Note: I've waiting 1 hour, 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 3 minutes, and 1 minute in between with same result
After the last switch, data speeds on downstream won't go much past 3mbps (most I saw was 3.04). Interestingly though, the upstream improves to 3.5mbps at some points.
Like I said; EVERY time I boot the phone and run a speed test, I get great data speeds, and then after switching to 2g and back to 4g it gets stuck at 3g.
I've attached a spreadsheet (internal IP and latitude/longitude removed so I don't advertise my location at such a precise amount) that color codes the data immediately after booting the phone (green) and after doing the switching mentioned above (red).

I'm willing to bet that this has some relevance to the number of people who are seeing <3mbps per second on their handsets. Many of the people who are getting great speeds are probably in areas where the 4g connection doesn't cut out.
UPDATE: From what I can tell, this doesn't happen as a result of your radio switching to 2g in an area where you aren't getting 4g reception, but I want to test more to see if there are conditions where this does happen.
UPDATE 2: This bug also affects UGKL1. Spreadsheet attached.

Does this happen when it auto-switches? i.e. if the phone switches to 2g and 4g or is it possible it's an issue related to a user initiated switch.
From what I can tell so far, it doesn't happen on auto-switch.
Typically at my house my phone doesn't get continuos 4g service and will drop down to 2g for minutes at a time. This happened today on a quick stop home from work, and upon returning to work I still had speeds over 3mbps.
I still want to try some other scenarios. I know my basement is particularly bad for 4g connections, so I'm going to try starting my phone in normal radio mode in the basement to force it to hit 2g and then do a speed test in an area where I know I can hit reasonable downstream levels.
I attached a spreadsheet to the op with data from UGKL1 as well, which also has the bug.
I'm running 4.0.2 stock with XXKK6 and I can confirm that it does not happen with auto switch between 2G to 4G. I drive regularly between Austin and Houston and GN switches between GPRS to Edge to 3G to 4G. I clock up to 5.5 mbps once I get back to Austin.

Yep, same happens to me on XXKK6 radio T-Mo US yakju firmware. I was getting 4-5mbps down / 1-2mbps up (a little lower than my usual speeds), then toggled 2G only and back again, I get about 2-2.5mbps down / .5-1mbps up. Ping times also got higher by about 50ms.
Adding star and comment to your bug ticket.
I had this problem as well with some of the newer basebands but flashing UGKK7 solved it. I can still achieve speeds of 5mbps+ even after toggling between 2g and 3g
Interesting; I never saw that radio because my phone OTA'd to 4.0.2 as soon as I unboxed it. Do ITL41D radios work fine with 4.0.2 and 4.0.4?
On UGLC1 switching to 2G only then back to 3G replicates this issue also. Download speeds lock tight around 3.11Mbps where I usually get 7-8.

Its not radios. One of the workarounds involve something that manages CPU throttling/voltage. I think. Don't quote me on that. So it is believed it is a software bug, not radio bug.

i know the CPU/voltage throttling causes the dropped signal bug, so it also causes the bug in this thread?

not sure. i doubt it because of the cap on bandwidth. not the complete data and/or cell signal loss. but it can't hurt to try the smart reflex workaround. never know.
Quick update to this issue: a friend of mine at work just bought a GNex from the Google Play Store and it has the exact same problem.
His phone is also on T-Mobile, and he's running the stock build for the phone. Reproducing it was completely straightforward, run speed test on 4g for 6mbps down, switch to 2g and back to 4g, run speed test for 3mbps down.
Also of relevance, this issue can be resolve by turning data off on the phone for a few seconds and reenabling it.

I do that too sometimes to restore data but it is inconvenient/annoying.
Going to the #*#*4636*#*# menu and turning off the radio also helps
I wish Google or whoever makes the baseband radio would fix this because it's inconvenient and sucks to go from 6-9mbps speeds to 3mbps lol
I'm on aokp m5 with trinity tried kk6 and uglc1 and my phone constantly switching from 3g to H and my data hangs even with full bar data will hang several times and sometimes drop is this the same issue

[Q] LG8 Connectivity Issues?

Some basic info: Sprint SGS3; rooted, manually updated to LG8. Otherwise, stock.
Since then, I've noticed that my phone doesn't "hold on" to 4G as well as it did pre root and update. For example, the 4G icon will be next to the signal strength in my status bar then it will disappear, there will just be signal strength with no connection indicator then either 3G or 4G will appear. I don't ever remember this happening before root/update. I haven't flashed anything else on the phone, and the main reason I rooted in the first place was so I could easily tether.
Has anyone else had this same issue?
Its funny that the LG8 update was supposed to help users that were having LTE connectivity issues... this happens to me on occasion too. i would venture to say that a combination of LTE still being in early development and coverage being spotty at times even in areas where u may have gotten full coverage at one point plus the "Connection Optimizer" that often jacks with ur data connection switching between wifi, 3g and 4g(LTE)... try doing a ##72786# to reactivate ur phone on the network... this will automatically re-associate ur data profile with the network and update prl info as well...
+1 I have the same issue

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the ##72786# and report back with results.
You make a fair point about LTE still getting off the ground, but I will say that pre-root/update, my phone held 4G consistently. Whatever the issue is, hopefully it will sort itself out soon, or enough people will have the same issue that it spurs some action on Sprint's side.
I'm in Houston, FWIW.
Edit/Update: ##72786# seemed to do the trick. HOWEVER, about 15 minutes ago, I attempted to turn on WiFi Tether. My laptop connected with no issues, but about 5 minutes into it, neither the 4G nor the 3G icons appeared next to the signal strength meter. ##72786#'d again, just to see if it made a difference, updated PRL and Profile. Things are holding steady so far, but we'll see how long this lasts.
I'll try to update later in the day.

Glad to see it worked. This is by no means a permanent fix. As u flash different roms thru out ur phones life span its a good idea to run this code every so often as flashing can overtime degrade baseband performance as those files dont get replaced with a rom but different roms interact with those files depending on the tweaks made at software level...

I am up here in Sugar Hill. Sprint Map shows you deep in LTEville. I worked in Tucker last year when a co-worker got a Verizon Tunderbolt. His 4G was screaming. He was getting 40+ down!
But the map also shows Cumming in LTE land so I drove over there just to see what LTE looked like and I saw the icon flicker on for about 30 sec. but it never really was there.

Strange Antenna Issue

Today my phone started having some issues.
In places I was supposed to get full coverage and all bars I am know getting only 2 bars...
And in places I was getting 2 bars I get no signal at all !!!
I think it is an Antenna thing. Maybe it is broken, IDK...
What could I do? I have no warranty as I bought this phone 2 months ago in EUA and I live in Brazil...
Thankss
Anyone?? Help??
I've opened my phone and Everything seemed to be clear and OK.
One thing. When I get signal and start using the 3G a lot. The Signal DOES NOT go off.
This is very strange...

I'm also having the same issue. I have a maguro yakju variant galaxy nexus. I'm getting only 1-2 bars and have no warranty as I got it from ebay, gps is also showing problems, but the phone came in new sealed condition. Please let me know if there's a fix to this
It seems to be an Power Amplifier issue. I am gonna put in a Repair Store and they are going to try to fix my phone.
I am going to keep updating this too with the progress.

What were the dbm stats? Your signal bar never tells the truth unless there is no service at all.
the signal bars are responing to dbm status.
I am checking both on the same time and I didnt get any anomalies betweent them...
I just put the phone to work in a place near home and they said it was an Power Amplifier issue and they're going to try fixing it.
Thanks.
I have exactly the same problem but my phone has only dealer warranty. Is there any chance to fix this through software?
If you have this exact same issue you cant fix it through software, because its an hardware problem...
It should be an hardware thing, if it isn't I don't know what else I could do.
Just updating...
My phone is now working. They changed the PA ( power amplifier) and now I have normal signal!
BUT, I am having two issues.
When I select "only use 2g networks" the phone than changes to edge and connects. When I deselect the 2g option the phone reconnects but it keeps on 2g. It does not switch to 3g...
I have to reboot the phone/radio.
AND,I am not getting 4G HSPA+ anywhere! Only HSDPA...
ANYONE????
Today I also have noticed problems with connection. I've very fresh GNx, had it with me at the office since Monday but today whole day was on GPRS. I thought it is an issue from the GSM network but after coming home where 3G should fly (and it does on Motorola Defy) my GNx was still on GPRS.
But when I make a call the data connection returns to 3G and some time after switches back to 2G.
If I leave phone somewhere where is better coverage it keeps 3G.
Meanwhile my Defy has 3G everywhere.
Shall I sent the GNx back to Amazon?

Man,
If you are in warranty you should return your phone for them to fix/change...
Try changing radios before doing that. It can be software related!

I'm on the same radio since beginning. And the same ROM was while phone kept 3G and now, when it is loosing it.
However, I wonder how much the network could influence the situation.
I've left overnight Nexus and Defy on the strongest coverage point and in the morning GNx was still at GPRS while Motorola switched from 3G down to GPRS.
I'm getting paranoid (and not talking about ROM). Restored phone clean via fastboot to factory state. Will be watching it over weekend and then decide what to do.
8 hrs later.
Phone kept weird for few hours at work and now flies with full range 3G. Also at home where yesterday it was switching to 2G.
I bet this was Vodafone way to thank me for cancelling my contract.
Gonna keep it at pure stock for an hour or two and then will change to some custom ROM... Maybe.
Updating again.
I've been testing my phone with the new "Power Amplifier" and now I can use my phone regularly.
The problem is... The phone does not support anymore the frequency of 850Mhz neither 3G or 2G.
I THINK they have put a PA that does not amplify this frequency.
My carrier uses: 2G:900/1800 3G:850/2100 3.5G(HSPA+):850Mhz mostly
So I understood why in some places I dont have any 3G coverage and in almost all places I can't get HSPA+ speeds.
Am I correct? Does the PA has to do w/ all this frequency thing?

[Q] Horrible signal. My problem or Sprints?

So today I have had issues with connecting to Sprint's network. In a city near mine, they are upgrading to 4G. My phone has been going from full signal to zero signal within seconds. It is killing my battery life. I am running CM10.1 with the current nightly. I restored a previous version of CM to see if it was an issue with the ROM and I was getting the same results. Do I need to flash the radios or leave it be? Could it be because of Network Vision? Is there a way to back up my current radios in case something goes haywire?

Its most likely a carrier issue....make sure you have the most current radios installed which are FD02 if i remember correctly....other than that its a very rare occurance that software would affect your signal...probably due to the work that they are doing in the area....turn off LTE and see if the 3G signal does the same thing...good luck let us know what happens
Its sprints terrible network.

Well, I have confirmed it to be on Sprint's end. All it took was a quick drive around town to pick up a different tower. My buddy has a signal booster in his apartment and I was picking up full bars there. Here's hoping LTE is close!

Awful LTE signal after update

I have an unlocked 10 running on T-Mobile US. I previously had no problems at home with a 4G LTE connection. But after updating to 1.53.617.5 this week, my LTE signal at home has completely disappeared on me. What's worse, the phone shows full bars, and won't drop to a slower connection. I have to manually switch to 4G/WCDMA (Auto) and use the slower 4G connection, which I presume is HSDPA.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I even did a factory reset, but it didn't help whatsoever.
Between this and the weak Wi-Fi, I'm starting to have second thoughts about this phone.

My LTE and wifi signal are slightly weaker on the 10 than what I'm used to seeing. Also on Tmo US. My LTE drops when I'm not upstairs lol. I took the ota when I first started up the phone so I can't speak for the other version.

Does it stay on LTE even though you have no reception? Mine does, and it also shows full bars.

Yeah mine doesn't do that. Switches to 4g
Have you tried doing a factory reset?
Maybe try wiping the cache partition? Check the "weak Wi-Fi signal" thread for directions on how to perform it. Just a suggestion.

I just tried wiping the cache partition. No dice.
I installed the OpenSignal app to see what's going on. It seems that the phone is locking onto a cell tower that's many miles away (in the middle of a river!), instead of many LTE cell towers that are only a block away from me. This makes no sense. It also indicates full reception.
The latest update definitely messed something up. Perhaps it's related to the "Wi-Fi stability enhancements".
unlocked htc 10 on tmobile. getting only 0-1 bars in my house . texts dont send and occasional dropped calls at various times. what could be the problem?

I have this problem as well, spoke to T-Mobile and of course they tried to blame it on the phone saying that they cannot guarantee that an unlocked phone will work with their network. I proceeded to tell them that the phone was listed as fully compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network they had no answer. I know it's not a solution at all but I'm on T-Mobile's prepaid service so at the beginning of next month just before I need to make a payment I'm switching to AT&T to see if that is any better
I'm somewhat disappointed and I really don't know if I should return the phone or not

While I do think the 10 doesn't get a signal as strongly as other phones do (my S6 was great), I think the latest firmware (1.53) has impacted reception for the worse.
Wait till HTC release T-Mobile RUU , you can change your mid, cid to tmo and flash it.

I shouldn't have to flash the phone to get it to work. Also, the purpose of getting the unlocked version was to have a carrier-free phone.
The more I use this phone, the more I notice that LTE connectivity is screwed up. It likes to lock onto the wrong cell towers that offer no reception (but still display full bars).
What's interesting is that when I turn on Wi-Fi, the phone locks onto the correct cell towers.
Forget the camera; HTC needs to resolve all these radio connectivity issues!

I agree the purpose of getting the unlocked phone was to not have to have a carrier branded device. I noticed that as well with the phone connecting to be incorrect tower. It really is frustrating because I've already started paying for my phone so I don't want to have to return it, I like all aspects of it physically but something has to be done about this reception. I used to get 4 to 5 bars and now I'm lucky if I get two
This is really ridiculous, I've only had my phone off the charger for just over an hour and I've used 10% of battery. I don't keep Wi-Fi on all the time I only had to turn it on to use Wi-Fi calling because my signal is so bad, HTC really needs to do something with the radios in this phone because the poor cell signal is just killing my battery life. Is anybody experiencing this same problem?
Here's a screenshot

You have a massive wake lock. Your issue doesn't reside with the radio.

Root your phone and then install better battery stats or gsam or any other utility that can show you specific wakelock stats and info. From there you can use that info to track down the specific wakelock.

Perhaps it's an app that's draining your battery.
I found that the Wi-Fi activity stat is wrong. Even on airplane mode, my 10 says that Wi-Fis active.
