I'm running the Paranoid Android Jellybean ROM and I've been getting really bad battery life. It dropped from 100 to 79 in 2 hours yesterday with 4g on and no usage. Last night "media" was killing my battery but now nothing really appears out of the ordinary. I attached some pictures below. Thanks

Worst battery life I've ever had and i get no GPS.... i flashed backed to Re-calikun 4.0.4 Rom
Most users have pretty bad battery. We need either a kick ass script (placebo ) or source to increase potential

Have you tried the latest CM10 nightly? I get amazing batterylife on it.
Have you considered the idea that maybe somethings keeping your phone from sleeping?
I think its weird how most jb roms I've run, ALL seem to charge really quick. Maybe that's part of the reason? I obviously have no expertise in this, just seems probable?

Yes, battery life is bad now but slowly improving.. I've posted several methods to help the bleeding battery issue... Keeping 4G up (If not using it) will make your battery disappear faster then a cupcake at a jenny craig convention. So here's some helpful things to make it a little bareable..
Juice defender- Use this app to manage data. I've got mine set Data off with screen off. It'll automatically kick it on when you put the screen on.
Notifications- Turn off Notification light, Limit notifications from App sycn (Facebook and such)
Sync times- Add a longer duration between syncs. do you need email to check every 15 min? It can be set to every 6 hours, ever 12 hours, or everyday, open app to sync at that moment. (not saying this is how your's is set)
Screen brightness- Turn off Auto bright, Set to a level where you can see it.
GTalk- This is an auto sign in program, Turn off, sign out.. disable whatever you prefer to do with this.
Screen time out- 15 Secs (or so) if your not using it.. it'll go off and save battery. (Works well with the dimness being lower)
Try these methods.. Your life will improve some.. (as always YMMV)

Nice smart ass response that truly shows your level of ignorance. The kernel used in both cm10 and aosp jb is built from source, both the Samsung released ff18 kernel source and open source bits to patch up the kernel to support jb. You fail at reading.

Read what the other guy said, don't think she/he was trying to be to much of a smartass. This what gets some of the noobs and other folks confused and asking about other kernels yea its built from source as you explained but its a different source other then the jb source that Samsung would to release. There's lots of confusing leading to the word built from source and have some folks thinking maybe its jb source which we haven't gotten yet and maybe that's why they wonder why the bad battery and start to asking about other kernels.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The point is its not JB source for our phone. If we had a JB kernel source, we'd see a lot more kernels than just his. It takes a certain amount of skill to take ICS source and make it work with another OS version, and it takes time to work out all the issues.
I've run just about all the JB ROMs to date, but had to finally give in and go back to ICS for my daily because JB battery life just couldn't get me through the day with my normal usage pattern. It'll get there though. Just give it time.

Have you guys tweaked the Performance tab of the phone? I've noticed better battery performance if I set my CPU freq to be 200-800 and the governor to be PegasusQ. Performance of the phone is still the same, but drain has been slower. You can also download Internet Commander from the market that will control your data radio, but it kinda sucks for streaming apps (Pandora).

Exactly!
"Samsung released ff18 kernel source and open source bits to patch up the kernel to support jb."
That is not considered "Samsung source"- I don't care how you slice it. That is Samsung ICS Source and patches from our Dev's to make JB work- not from Samsung. Besides that... your rude.
Jb battery life has been fine for me. I get about 2-2:30 hrs screen on time which typically includes playing music for about an hour each day, wifi or 3g on 24/7, along with 10-60 texts and a few quick phone calls. It's not as good as gingerbread but I would say it is better than early ics leaks, and maybe even better than ff18. As always ymmv. :good: BTW I'm running codename android with everything stock.

Perhaps you weren't aware, but "Samsung source" has sucked and sucks in the ff18 source release. It's incomplete, it doesn't boot if built as intended, and requires changes just to compile properly. Try actually learning and educating yourself instead of making lame arguments like this one.

I have been running Calks Rom 1.5a with Overstews ICS Theme. With this Rom and the Kernel that came with the Rom, I believe the kernel was the Rogue Kernel, I was having only 2% dedicated to the AOS. Two weeks ago I flashed the EG31 modem, which I feel I jumped the gun on that, but was still only running 2% for AOS. I flashed the EK02 kernel today and my AOS has been sitting at 14% and I really dont see any improvement in signal strength. Compared to some of the speed test I have seen in some of the forums, my data speeds seem really slow in comparison. Does anyone know if the jump from 2% to the 14% AOS I'm having will make that big of a difference in battery life? With my previous setup, I was able to run on a full charge for about 2 and a half days with moderate use.
I believe (and I may be wrong) that it was masked in the kernel more than it was an actual fix. Really your best bet is to re-calibrate your battery and give it a few battery cycles/days to settle in and then compare your results to previous setup

Any kernel patched up to .14 reports usage in a way that results in dramatically reduced usage attributed to AOS. Personally, even with the bug, the device is superb in the battery life department. If the ever truly quash this bug, it will leap to ridiculous.

If you are talking about this post... this is about Mutliboot (Allows you to temporarily reboot into a completely stock TW Rom to update PRL, Profile, and things like that) Once you reboot, it will restore your original rom. (Quite the handy tool)
If there is a true JB kernel developed, I stand corrected. But to my knowledge as of this morning, there isn't. (Devs feel free to chime in on this if you will)
No other JB kernels except for sbrissens, which technically is a custom kernel since there isn't a stock kernel for the et4g his had to be written from scratch on top of the ICS source

Not in my experience. It's not absolutely awful on the JB ROMs, but it's not equal to CM9 in my opinion. Also, there is no battery calibration on this phone, other than using it and letting the fuel gauge converge to accuracy.

Meh, battery life isn't really an issue... I have my phone tethered directly to a motorcycle battery in my backpack.. I can get atleast an hour and a half screen on time before it dies running JB.... But honestly, i'm always trying them to see how things go. But I use the typical conservation methods.. (Juice Defender(Data on screen on), Screen dim, 15 sec timeout, and all the other goodies to help make the juice last), If all else fails.. I do internet support for a cable company, i'm sitting at a computer all day so i've got power to recharge if needed LOL..

Can be done in recovery (under advanced) or with an app from the store.

ROMs themselves rarely ever have an actual impact on battery life. Most postive effects for battery come from the kernel, and negative ones from rogue apps.
Before you ask which kernel offers the best battery, it really depends on the requirements of the user and the phone itself. You'll just have to try a few.

Hmm.. thats strange. I'm on MMuzzy's ROM which is pure AOSP and I get around 2 and a half hours of screen time. And some people around the forums have gotten around 5 hours of screen time with different combinations of ROMS and Kernels.

I used to get some awesome battery life. VZW + 2100mah. Typically 4 hours screen on time was normal.... now I'm lucky to get 1hr. I can't remember if it was the jelly bean update or the inclusion of Google Now.
Does letting the ROM settle really help? I have been getting terrible battery life out of my 2100mah. The battery just drains when the screen is off. No rogue apps, but this is a fresh install as of 24 hours ago

I wasn't going to put my 2 cents in but because there are so many complaints about this being in the wrong place, I just have to now.
I have tried many different ROM's and kernels and found there always seems to be the "right" combination sooner or later. Right now I am on AOKP w/Franco M6 and getting about 14 hours with 24% battery left, 2.5 hours screen time, mostly LTE and moderate phone use, best I have seen of any combo for me on this ROM. For CNA the right kernel for me was lean kernel. A little experimentation and patience and you will find that sweet spot soon enough.
Edit: the whining drew me to it, sucked me in so I couldn't stop myself from answering
If someone can get 4+ hours screen with mostly 3G, let me know. haha.

However as for battery life slim ROMs work great but I'm on jbsourcery built in trinity and I've definitely had worse d: the only ROM I've used that's had has battery is pa however they've had multiple updates since then so I'm sure its not horrible now

2 things here:
1) OP, wrong section. Questions belong in their own section, the Q&A section. Development is reserved for Roms, kernels, tweaks, etc.
2) If you guys see something posted in the wrong section, report it. No need to get in an internet gang war about it. Us mods have a life too and we can not be here 24 hrs a day to watch over you. When you hit the report button, we see it.
I have lately been running tests of different ROMs and trying to get the best battery life possible! I have tested out these ROMs:
Jedi Mind Trick X1
CM10 Stable Release 4.1.2
AOKP Jellybean 4.1.2
Slim Bean Unofficial 4.1.2
When i flashed these ROMs i did a battery calibration (off app from play store NOT CWM). And ran them on FULL Brightness, GPS ON, BLUETOOTH ON, and running on Wi-Fi! I opened up netflix and watched multiple movies (same movies for each ROM)...until the phone went completely dead. Here are the results i got:
Jedi Mind Trick X1: 4 1/2 Hours
CM10 Stable Release: 3 3/4 Hours
AOKP Jellybean: 4 Hours
Slim Bean Unofficial: 5 3/4 Hours
As most people know the Screen does use over half of the battery. So on this test the screen was on NON-STOP for the amount of time you see above. And 99% of people will not have their screens on for that long at one time. So this is the WORSE-CASE scenario for battery life. I was impressed mainly with Slim Bean and Jedi Mind Trick did good as well.
You may get different results than I did. If you are using a ROM that i did not test or you tested one of these ROMs above and got different results please post below your results.
I hope this helped guys

Personally I have the best battery performance, regardless of the ROM, by setting up CPU profiles. Basically you can set one profile to limit the to 432 (or whatever you want) while the screen is off and 1500+ while screen is on. I use ROM Toolbox Pro for this and get really good results. If your interested just do some searching on ROM Toolbox Pro and CPU profiles. Just thought I would share

I'm new to Android. I made a few posts on here making that abundantly clear (lol). I am just wondering, what exact part of the OS is the kernel? For example, I'm using LiquidSmooth with the default kernel that was included with that. If I were to flash the ktoonsez kernel, what changes would I see? Also, could someone point me to a site where I can download the KT kernel for LiquidSmooth 4.2.1 JellyBean Beta 2? What other kernels are there? What are the advantages of using them? And finally, where can I find them?
I'm looking for a way to conserve battery life right now, but not take away from how my phone currently looks. Sorry for asking such a stupid set of questions, but I'd like to know about this since I plan on sticking with Android. And if that's the case, I wanna learn all about the neat things I can do to make my phone customized, sleek looking, and effective.
Thanks in advance for helping out this new comer to the Android scene
The kernel is the interface between the devices software and hardware. Its basically a bundle of drivers and code to tell the hardware and software how to communicate. All computers use a kernel from windoze to OSux and Linux. Android is based around a modified version of the Linux kernel. You won't see any visual changes when you flash a kernel. And you can find em here in the development or original development sub forums

Cool thanks for the detailed explanation. I never really took the time to look up the exact purpose of kernels in an OS but you just explained it to me perfectly.
So, are there any kernels that are better for say battery conservation and performance?

That all depends on your settings and usage. Theres no one way to get the best battery and performance for your usage, mostly just trial and error trying out different settings and tweaks til you find what works for you. For a good battery performance balance undervolting and overclocking work well. For instance I'm on a note 2 and im overclocked to 1.8ghz and undervolted by 75mv across the board and get almost identical battery to stock, however I still gain in performance without sacrificing battery. Now if I drop my clock rate back to stock and keep the undervolting I get same performance as on stock but my battery life increases by a few hours.

Check out the how to thread in general. Should be right up at the top... Great battery and great performance on the ktoonsz kernel with lots of different options! If I knew how to copy and paste the link from the stupid xda app, I would!
Edit: I am an idiot...here ya go...

Here are some current stats using assorted tweaks from that thread. My screen shot app is horrible... Sorry for the sideways pic.

I can't seem to see your thumbnail. Do I have to enable an option in the settings to view thumbnails?
And thanks for all the replies guys, I appreciate the input

Not that I know of...total batt time 1 day 10 hours. Screen on time 3 hours 45 minutes with about 15% left.

1 day and 10 hours?! Wow! I'm lucky if I get 8-9 hours. I am going to start disabling WiFi when I am walking around though. I just flashed over to the KT kernel and I am going to try optimizing my settings with the ones that were in that Kernelizers thread.

Check out DS Battery Saver Pro. Handles WiFi disabling for you...less bloat than Juice defender. Screen filter helps with screen brightness...and I am undervolted pretty good too. Good luck! I am now at 1d 12 hr. 4:44 screen on. 2% batt left!

Awesome, installed the KT kernel and used the settings listed in the Kernelizers thread. I also installed DS Battery Saver Pro and now my battery life is amazing. Left my house at 7:05AM this morning and on my way to work over the course of the hour my battery dropped 3%. Usually, my battery would drop 10% - 15% during this time so I am VERY happy with the outcome.
Thanks for all the help guys

Glad it worked out! Did you undervolt yet...more battery savings there too...and very little drop in performance.
