OK here is some help. Read the posts here. Lots of them. Over and over, and all the way through. Start at the begining of the 'development' thread and read the stickies.
I would also suggest checking out Qbking77's videos. He's got a crap load of very well thought out and produced 'how to's'.
There are SO MANY threads that warn to NOT USE ROM Manager with this phone it silly. It will brick your phone. Or if you are lucky only require a factory reset and then the Odin re-installation of a stock rooted ROM. Many new to this phone will try and use it because they believe that it is 'just an app' that can be installed and take all the 'work' out of learning how to do the right thing. It can't. A rooted Android phone is NOT like an iPhone. You have so much more chance of mucking things up, and conversly of making this thing freaking awesome.
Check out sfhub's post for stock rooted ROMs EL29 - the go to, save you life, restore for me, and the FC24 (ICS). Team Rogue are the recovery kernal guys (Steady Hawkin knows his stuff), their CWM kernal repacks and enhancements make modifying this phone a breeze - if you follow the directions! If you don't know what and how clockworkmod works; spend some time and read and watch some videos too. This alone will probably save your ass. I am an image freak on all my technology and make nandroids (CWM images) almost daily and copy them to my PCs incase I need to do a restore and there is a problem with my SD card. [side note: I image all my other machines regularly too; Mac, Linux and Windows]
I understand your excitement to get 'flashin' but spend some time - maybe a week at least(not kidding) learning about how Android and the Epic 4GT work and how to properly modify/enhance the device(s). If you do you will be amazed at what you can do.
Good luck.

I seriously don't mean to flame u ....before you do anything with flashing or anything you had better read read read and understand because you are about to brick your phone ..... get rid of rom manager and learn to use recovery the right way and read read read .... you have not done enough if you even tried using rom manager ....
Read this entire thread and understand you have a 500 dollar phone u can screw up by not knowing what you are doing ...http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...
How Not To Brick Your E4GT (UPDATED 3/28/12)
A lot of people bricking have a lot more knowledge about android than you ...please learn before just jumping in and asking a bunch of stupid questions on here ... this is not meant to make u feel bad , but you seriously need more info before you flash this .... this would be like flashing entire roms on iOS which they don't do
I mean you didn't even post in the correct phone in the first place you post in the sensation forum....

Said team rogue or something. Thought i could try to flash in that recovery. Turns out i couldnt lol all flashes aborted. and then i was unable to boot up. Odin back to stock rooted. Which CWM is correct???
EDIT: also tried flashing CWM in rom manager. It boots me to the triangle and thats it

Yikes! OK, it all depends on what you are trying to flash. Rogue works great for Gingerbread builds. The Epic Touch has recovery built into the kernel, so you can't really just mix and match. You have to have the kernel with the recovery in it. Read up about which rom you are trying to install before doing anything. The AOSP stuff requires you use the el26 "Stock" CWM. Stock refers to it is an unmodified ClocckworkMod, unlike Rogue. There is also a thread about how to not brick your e4gt, I highly recommend you read that as well. Of course, I've learned that doing anything with anyones phone other than your own will often end in disaster as well lol "Dude, why doesn't blah blah blah work?" Usually a quick fix for those in the know, but if the person can't do it themselves, they just get frustrated and mad at the @$$hole that messed up their phone lol Good luck

Absolutely! Rooted my wife's evo and put CM7 on it a while ago, learned that lesson very quickly! No matter how much you try to warn them that some things might be a bit weird or might not work, they always be shocked if anything isn't exactly the way they had it before. She has an iphone now ... and I refuse to learn how to jailbreak it

I GOT IT!! lol I had to revert back to el26...nevertheless i was able to boot into the ACTUAL cwm after flashing another file through this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728...just installed cyanogenmod on his thank you very much you guys. much appreciated...didnt want to pay my friend money for his epic lol considering the money i just dropped on my Gnexus
I'm new to the rooting game as well for the EG4T. The Rogue part sounds right, it most likely had more to do with the version you used. I made the same mistake once.
My best tip would be to use QBKing77's tutorial videos and follow them step-by-step....he has one for pretty much any situation and explains things very well. They are a lifesaver. Also, since it's your friend's phone, maybe stick to GB ROMs as they seem to require the fewest tweaks and have the least FCs. If you absolutely have to have ICS, my choice on ROM would be Venum's Anaconda ROM, which was just released yesterday. It is nothing short of brilliant. However, once you go to ICS, I believe you need to start from scratch (stock) if you want to go back to GB. I hear it's a big no-no to try and recover GB from an ICS ROM (most likely what you did). Best of luck.

I learned the same thing when the Optimus S had a firmware update - it was later pulled but the damage was done. So I did what I could - found a stable tweaked ROM and put it on there. I've always believed in wiping the phone before flashing - BIG MISTAKE. "Where's my messages? Where's my files?"
Funny thing about this is that they fixed the last FW update with another one that rolls out today. I know I'm going to have to flash this one but I'll be using TB to back up what I can before I flash it. Also have to figure out how to save her SMS, that's the #1 thing that will avoid a mad wife!

There aren't any kernels that overclock for ICS yet. I am not sure on this but the paid Tegrak Ultimate app allows overclocking of stock kernels we have but I haven't tried it on CM9 yet.
Once we get the ICS kernel source, things will be a lot easier when it comes to flashing. I understand where you are coming from with the Nexus though. I basically wipe everything on my NS4G then flash the Euroskank CM9 nightly and all of my apps install automatically. We don't have it that easy on the Epic Touch but once we have a kernel built from source we will be able to wipe and flash without fear of any residual issues

That's one of the things I like about the cm9 builds lately. I did a fresh install of fd02 just to check it out and when I came back to cm9 it pulls in my setup I had before, right down to changing my wallpaper for me. No backups needed. I still have to go in and put in my username and passwords on some of them and I lose my Cut the Rope game data (Oh darn!!), but I love that my apps from the play store(calling the market the "play store" makes me feel dirty lol) automatically install.

OK, first things first. I will suggest you read a lot more before doing anything based on what I bolded above.
ROM Manager is generally discouraged and can cause a brick. Read more here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24318861&postcount=2
Hopefully you got to this in time.
Good luck and once again, please do not be afraid to ask questions before you do something. It's easier than taking your friend's phone to Sprint because it bricked.
Final Edit: Sorry if I'm coming off a little harsh, but there are MANY posts out there - far longer than the ICS brick issues - that have said ROM Manager is a no-no.

Like I said earlier, the recoveries are built into the kernel. Get the files you want to flash onto the sd card, then odin the el26 kernel. Before it reboots (ICS won't boot on a gb kernel, so you'll just boot loop anyway), go back into recovery and flash away.
Just whatever you do....dont flash with any Rogue ICS recovery, the source isnt avalable yet so its kinda like playing darts with a blindfold on and your friends are all drunk and not paying attention to whats going on around them.
Personally, I keep Rogue Stock EL29 (Odin version) on my sdcard and just use mobile odin to revert back to that when I need to flash (someone please let me know if this method is a bad one, so far it has worked fine though).
I haven't read up much on it, but I would avoid doing backups and restores of ICS roms via recovery until ICS is finalized (regardless of the recovery your using).
If you wanna play it safe, just stick with an EL29 rom until a final version of ICS is released, frankly I prefer stability over fancy new features and just like to test out the ICS leak for a little before odin'ing back to Rogue EL29 and restoring my gingerbread backup...it quite cool to watch the offical ICS mature and get fixed.

Did you mean Calk's 1.4?
You shouldn't be using touch recovery with anything for risk of bricking your phone.
And if you're using ANY version of ICS, you also risk bricking your phone if you try to use any form of recovery.

I agree with the first part, stay away from CWM9 touch. Youre asking to get bricked. CWM5-7 recover rogue is fine to use between ICS roms. Always run Calkins format all. And never use cwm.recovery to do a nand back to GB. Flash SFHUBS stock EL29 first via Odin..along with calk's format all prior to.that then nandroid back to your previous set up.

Build a solid ics kernel for us then. Or wait until we get the official release. There is no fix because nothing is broken. All ics roms for this phone are built on leaked kernels.
But I'm sure your post was just sarcasm and you knew that since it's been spoken about in just about every ics rom thread.

I purchased this phone yesterday after a great year with my Evo and two with a Hero before that. Even though I haven't posted alot I've been rooting and customizing my phones for years. I was even to the point with the file system and stuff that I would add and remove things from roms before I flashed them so I feel like I know what I'm doing with an Android phone.
This thing is a whole other animal though as far as I'm concerned. I've searched, I've read and I still don't understand half the lingo used here. I don't even know how to ask the questions I want to ask honestly. I hate having to jump through hoops just to flash a ROM.
I am rooted. Baseband is el29, kernel is 2.6.35.14-rogue_ET-1.4.1+ and build is Calkulin 3.0. I installed Rom Manager from the market and got the official Clockwork Mod Recovery because I didn't like the recovery that was put on my phone when I rooted.
So from here with the setup I explained what roms can I just place on my sd card and flash through recovery after a wipe? I don't want downgrade to a previous anything or change a modem or use Odin because I don't know what any of that stuff means and there is no where I can find that it's explained very well.
I appreciate any help that is offered and I know I come off as negative but so far this phone is extremely intimidating to do anything with and I don't want to brick it. I never worried about bricking my Evo cause I'm not sure that's even possible anymore
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I worked on a friends EVO once and didn't understand half of what you guys had to do to root and flash so the feeling is mutual, lol. First off if you're going to switch to ICS start on the EL26 kernel with CWM. Anything else and you risk a hard brick. Odin is actually the easiest to flash with. Sfhub has Odin one-click that makes it easy as hell.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.
one of the things you're going to have to get used to with this phone, is that the kernels and recoveries are tied together. Its not like any other android phone i ever used that you could swap out kernels and use whichever recovery you wanted.
You have a Samsung phone now. You are in the promised land. Samsung phones are a lot easier to work with than HTC phones.
Basically any ROM here can be flashed using Clockwork Mod Recovery unless it says otherwise. I'd like to point you over to QBKing77's youtube channel. He has a ton of "how to's" and reviews for a lot of ROMs on the E4GT.
http://www.youtube.com/user/qbking77
I'm sure you'd appreciate that. My family uses HTC phones and whenever they want something done to their phone, I tear up and hope that QBKing77 got an EVO since the last time I needed him.
Also the great thing about Samsung is that if you do happen to brick your phone, Odin will save your life.
If you have any question feel free to PM me or something
You cannot use a GB kernel with an ICS ROM and you cannot use an ICS kernel with a GB ROM.
Coming from stock EL29 you can use the Oneclicks to upgrade to the newer FD ROMs or just flash most through CWM unless they state otherwise.
If you do decide to go ICS(FD24 FD26 etc) and want to go back to GB ROMs, you need to flash the EL26+CWM through Odin(which isn't as complicated as you think) and go right to recovery as the phone tries to reboot, then flash the GB rom.
Seriously check out qbking though, he is the biggest help and his videos are phenomenal. Hope that helps a little.

You need to used Odin to flash EL26+cwm.tar. However, you do not need a computer, I use mobile odin android app religously. It is definitely worth the 5 bucks. For mobile odin just keep the EL26+cwm.tar on your phone, when you want to leave a rom open mobile odin app, point it to that .tar and flash. Then you will have the best copy of cwm on your phone and can start wiping/flashing any roms, kernals, or modems.

Thanks !!!!
Last noob question.... I cant find the tar, i only see .exe files and zips to have it flashed in CWM......
Edit: Found it!, but i have 2 files one i found that was StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 which is like 8megs, but i did d/l SPH-D710.EL26_CL839620_ROM_ROOTED-sfx.exe, and extracted it via 7zip, then found the 400 meg .tar... which one should i use?
Btw, thanks for your help!

And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.

SORRY JUST WANT TO REPEAT SOME GREAT WORDS... DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER... that is all
So say I wanted go from Calk's gb to his ICS, if I make a nandroid of the gb rom then install the ICS one and don't like it for some reason I can't just nandroid back?

You can nandroid right back! You will have to have a kernel that will let you use CWM such as FD02 or EL26 to get to recovery for the nandroid.

Thanks for all the help but I'm strongly considering returning this phone. I've read till my head hurts and the most common words I see here is brick. I don't want to take that chance. How anyone could think dealing with an Evo is worse than this I don't understand. With the Evo you put the rom on the sd card, wipe, and flash. No worrying if you have the right modem/kernel/cwm combination. It's a nice phone, but I really regret buying it now. 3g is also slooooooow.

I came from the Hero myself...and my first post in this forum looked much like yours. I even went and installed ROM manager thinking I was doing the right thing...lol
Take your time and read up before you do anything...Odin/mobile Odin is actually very easy to use and the safest, even without the one click files. As with others on here if you need some help feel free to PM.

I also recently moved to this phone from the evo. The epic touch blows the evo away in every way possible! There is definitely some studying to be done but its worth it! Once you get the hang of things its a breeze.
Same here. I've had the phone since latter part of December and have not rooted it yet ...mostly because my laptop has the screen of death. But noticed the slight difference in the method in flashing roms on the E4GT. But after seeing some video on that AOKP rom I'm getting antsy and need to get my computer fixed!!

I'm someone, like others I've saw, that are coming over here from the EVO 3d after having to go through asurion.
As a good XDA member, I read through the stickies.
I wanted to confirm what I've learned.
ICS for you guys is rather different. I'm seeing many versions of ICS, I'm guessing leaks at different stages (haven't seen many leaks on phones in a while).
I also saw that wipe in custom recoveries is a REALLY bad idea.
In fact it said not to use custom recoveries with ICS stuff.
So why does Calkulin's E4GT rom say you MUST use a custom recovery?
I thought I saw something crazy that said it depends what version you are on for the method you root. But I can't find that again. It seems weird, but please tell me that's wrong and there's only one way to really root.

You have to use a specific recovery to flash stuff, called the EL26/29 recovery. It's based on 5.0.2.7 (?) of ClockWorkMod recovery. This is generally accepted as the safest way to flash. Flashing from an ICS based recovery has been known to brick devices.
Samsung devices have Odin, much like HTC devices have Fastboot. We're able to put the device in Odin (download) mode and flash just about anything. There's even an app version called Mobile Odin that allows you to Odin flash directly from the phone without having to plug in.
Correct me if wrong but i think there is only an issue with ics recovery when wiping due to the emmc bug (partition corruption). Thats whats causing the bricks. There are plenty workarounds though. I use ics recovery to flash things, i just make sure to never wipe anything using the recovery. I use calk's format all zip and modified format zip whenever i need to wipe.

Correct they have come up with ways to use ICS recovery to update and flash certain things. Honestly since the OP is new to Epic Touch I would stick with the very simply odin of el26 recovery and flashing anything you need while in ICS.
agat's threads have great info if you are a stock software guy with ways to flash and upgrade while on ICS. Honestly GB is pretty damn polished and there are some awfully nice roms for it as well and you have no worries at all with how you flash. sfhub has quite a few threads with his odin one click methods which have been a god sent for a lot of us here.
First decide what you want to do then any one of the OP's will direct you in the right direction. Also if you can read up on the How not to brick your phone threads/stickies in general I believe
Would be a better idea to use the cm9 direct boot Odin file. Much easier than pulling the battery 10 times. Read all the release notes on the cm9 wiki and you'll have safe flashing.
Sent from my awesomely EPIC Phone
Rooster-just curious, why would you need to pull the battery? I've flashed plenty of roms and haven't had to pull the battery once...
Karate-the easiest easy to just gain root access is to use sfhub's one click rooted el29-just boot into download mode (vol up + power), plug into the computer and click start...easy peasy
And as playya said, the OP's of any of the rom threads all have great info and directions to keep you flashing safely. Good luck and happy flashing!
