[Q] RECOVERY battle... - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey guys I'm torn between "CWM" & "TWRP"
I've always used CMW, never tried TWRP
I would just like some of your guy's different OPINION'S on the Two RECOVERIES
Any PROS?
Any CONS?
Thanks Guys
Michael :highfive:

They are both good at doing the same thing. It is personal preference really.

CWM. It allows you to disable stock recovery and keep root when you OTA update through it. That alone is more than enough for me. The only downside is the UI is terrible.

I love the UI of CWM, TWRP looks so sloppy and unprofessional in my opinion.

No big difference if you have a gs3 but if you have an htc that has no s-off then twrp is way better cuz allows you to flash kernels via recovery while if yiu had cwm installed you would need to flash kernel manually by connecting your htc tk the computer and having it in bootloader mode.

FYI for ClockWorkMod 3.0.0.5 for CM7

Just wanted to let everyone know that Rom Manager now has clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 for CM7 to be flashed thru rom manager now along with the older versions for android 2.2. So no more flashing via fastboot or terminal, all our flashing and rom jumping can be done much easier all thru Rom Manager. Thanks ClockWork!
If I flashed 3 awhile back do I still press update now? Or do i select delete recovery then update?

Yea just click on the "flash recovery" and re-select mytouch4g and away we go. I'm checking now to see if Nandroid Backups work correctly. will post back in a second.

No i haven't. Our phone are down at my shop so i have to do everything via my cell phone. and i cannot risk my phone being down that long. and with having 28+ phones lines coming in my building it's ringing off the hook.

Forgive my n00bness, but I am on 2.5.1.2 and can do all these things. I'm excited there's a new version out and I am very, very grateful for the hard work of those responsible. just wondering if I'm missing something...What all does 3.0.0.5 bring to the Glacier?

3.0.0.5 allows you to flash gingerbread based ROMs, basically CM7. According to @cmsrc on twitter today however, there may not be a need to switch through 2.5.1.2 and 3.0.0.5 soon. No time frame on that though yet I don't believe.
Anyone know if they fixed the charging while off issue that cwm has?

This is big in two ways
first of all
Previously we were not able to create a Nandroid backup. A nandroid backup is a snap shot of our OS in it's current state. So if we flash something new, a font, a boot image, what have you we are putting 100% of our faith in that flash that it will not screw anything else up. Because if it does we have to start at ground 0 again.
second of all
the developer of CWRM said that he would make the 3.x flash-able via the ROM manager when the CM7 build approached an RC status. So that isn't to far off.
So now am I gonna be able to update my rom(cm7) with rom manager automatically.

[ROM] 1 Dec ITL41F [GSM] - Stock ROM image for ClockworkMod

Here is the completely stock ROM image for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, version ITL41F. It is not rooted, if you wish to root after installing use my Superboot. System and boot images are included, recovery and baseband are not. The baseband version for ITL41F is the same (XXKK1) as ITL41D, which is posted in this topic if required.
I know this will be useful to anyone wishing to revert their phone to get a future OTA, to chefs wanting to base a ROM on it etc. etc., so here it is.
To install, flash this update zip via ClockworkMod.
Enjoy!

It's official Samsung firmware.
Thanks for the ROM - this will be useful for many I'm sure
Can I just ask - is there a reason the recovery image isn't included? It seems from recent threads that this is often requested in order to flash completely back to stock, but no-one seems to have one available. I was just wondering if it there was a specific reason why people haven't been posting it?
Cheers
Think I'll have a play about with this in my kitchen - get some practice in for when I get my GN

Yes apologies - I reedited my post when I saw that also.
Sorry for cross posting on this thread. Hopefully they will release the new updated version soon.
Although it probably worth a look as it has an autoscript to restore your phone to stock by flashing multiple files.
If your phone is rooted and have CWM, Superuser and Adfree installed and you flash this what exactly happens?
Does it uninstall CWM? if not how do you access it?

is it just me but does cw recovery prevent you from installing ota updates?
I keep getting the alert from Google to update but get the sad hospitalised Droid when trying to install.
If I flash the stock rom but still have cw recovery and root the phone, will the ota updates work?

As far as i know this not touching your recovery. You must lock the bootloader in order to have stock recovery. You must root it again and install rom manager to access it through UI enviroment.I dont know for sure how you can access it with button combination (i think middle volume and power button)

I think your problem is cwm recovery and not the root. You must lock the bootloader in order to have stock recovery. After that the update can installed succesfully

you have a nexus, theres only one way to do it correctly.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot a custom recovery(cwm or i recommend twrp recovery), flash a custom rom(and kernel if you want) in your recovery, then reboot. thats all you need to do. no need for apps or hacks. thats why we buy nexus devices, for the ease. since youre already unlocked, just fastboot a recovery and flash a rom

in this case its one and the same. ive owned every single nexus and this method does not change. all other methods are just extra baggage. or, if you want to, tell all my nexii(nexus one, nexus s, and galaxy nexus) that they dont have root. all the custom have have the superuser binaries that are needed.

Just download cwm and put it with your adb/fastboot files.
download the su.zip and put it onto your "sd card".
Pull up cmd prompt and access adb files
adb reboot bootloader
*make sure bootloader unlocked*
Fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
Fastboot reboot bootloader
Fastboot boot cwm.img
Then flash the su.zip
Done

Suggestion:
At this time cwm should no longer be preached as defacto standard.
It would be better to refer to "a recovery" linking to both cwr and twrp2.
CWR is extremely antiquated and the ease of use of twrp2 is MUCH better.

I only used CWM as an example. I do see your point though.
Personally, I haven't even bothered rooting my nexus or felt the need to do so. Due to the fact that I have not rooted my nexus, I don't have a preferred recovery. I was under the impression that CWM was the preferred recovery (of the majority of nexus users) based on comments I've read in the nexus forum.
I did have my EVO & Evo 3D rooted and used both CWM and TWRP at different times. I preferred TWRP. I believe it was TWRP 1.1.1 vs CWM 4.0.1.4 iirc. I tried TWRP 2.0 but didn't like the touch interface.
I just figured I would jump in to give an easy root method to the OP. That is one of the only benefits to the HTC unlock method. The fact that it forces you to learn some things that many other people would never bother to learn, ie fastboot/adb commands. once you get those down you are pretty golden.
At any rate, you are right though. TWRP could be a better option for the OP. And based on my EVO 3D experience, I would say it probably will be the better option.

Install GNex Toolkit from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310. First do option 1 (drivers) and than option 7 (one-click for all). You have root and cwm, works like a charm and is the easiest way to do it.

Exactly, Samsungs bootloaders aren't locked. And theres no fastboot on these. So everything is done in recovery or odin. And s off is an htc thing. And if youve never used it, definitely try twrp its worth checkin out. And since you sound like your new to this I would check out mskips toolkit. Simplifies the steps youll see in qb's vids
To sum it up tho,
Flash twrp- http://db.tt/5TTdVP8o
Or clockworkmod- http://db.tt/1gnrxdw4
using odin(pda slot)- http://samsung-updates.com/Odin307.zip
Then boot into recovery and flash team epics root-from-recovery- http://k0nane.info/rom/ecm/TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip

I'm planning to replace CWR with TWRP and ROM Manager with GooManager. After I install GooManager and TWRP, will I need to manually delete the backups made by CWR (blobs etc.)?
Yes, if you want space on your internal storage (or wherever you're storing them). Better off deleting them because they're not compatible anyways.
Just delete the clockwork folder in your internal storage or SD card.
So is Twrp actually the better recovery to use as apposed to cwm?
I've personally found TWRP to be more consistent than CWM's touch interface... (use it on ~ 3 devices a this point... T989, T999, and hp touchpad..)
Works pretty well...

It's all up to preference honestly. I haven't had any issues with all the available recoveries but I prefer CWM 5.0.2.7 because of the Darkside scripts. (They were made specifically for CWM 5.0.2.7, but also work with TWRP last time I checked.) Never had an issue with the recovery and all the ROMs I've flashed have all worked perfectly well.

Good advice re: deleting CWM
I tried to flash a CWM recovery (not realizing it was a CWM recovery) with TWRP, and it was a mess.
I agree re: figuring it out for yourself. (I de-bricked my KF2 yesterday, thanks to a Xubuntu - Adb tutorial.)
You guys are lifesavers for Noobs like me.
