[App] Data Sleep - Stop the Notification LED at night - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps

Originally I wanted to make an app that just turned off the notification LED at night. It's great during the day but annoying at night.. and I'm too lazy to go into settings all the time.
But, seems you can't do this without root (perhaps) so I just use a brute force method and turn off the sources of the notifications: data.
I figure this way missed calls and sms will still set it off and those are more likely to be important. Maybe later I'll make the option to ignore those too.
Really single purpose app, can turn off wifi, mobile data and syncing on a schedule. Set it and forget it.
Bonus: saves a bit of battery life
I'm also playing around with a non-full screen UI.
Let me know what you guys think!

Limitations: Well it's only going to block notifications that are internet based. So calendar events, etc will still set it off.

Update Released
Just posted V1.05
Changes:
-If the current time is within the Start/End window it will activate immediately
-Re-registers times with the system on boot - before it would get wiped on a phone restart.. whoops

Charged up the battery then let it run over night to see drain.
Lost about 3% over 8.5 hours or so with Data Sleep active. Not too shabby.

Nice, but when I set the starting time at 00:00 the app shuts everything off immediatly (even if it's still 22:00h).

Ah.. I'm relying too much on the built in Android functionality. If you set it to 23:59 it should work as you would like it. And the issue should only be of concern on the first day. The daily performance shouldn't be affected.
I'll update it to handle the time window more robustly.
Thanks for letting me know!

I was using the Blocking Mode of Samsung ROM to disable notification LED and such, but it doesn't support turning Data Off automatically, so this is a good addition.
I'll let you know when I encounter any problems.

Great, thanks! I'm curious of Samsung's implementation I had just read about it in some NoteII reviews and assume it's in the SGSIII's JB update... I'm still waiting for the official JB update to make the leap.. don't want to risk my dev phone right now.

[Q] No 3g during night hours, sleep mode?

Dear all,
Is anyone else experiencing the following problem?
When the phone goes to sleep mode during the night hours it wont receive any messages for whatsapp etc. It seems that it turns off the 3g connection when you turn the screen off during the night hours.
Does anyone know a possible fix for this?
I have gone through all the settings and could not find anything about this.
Cheers.
I recently got this on my Desire Z too, and I have not changed any settings on that. Then I noticed it's happening on my One X too..
no 3g late night
Hi there, i have a motorola photon. in the settings menu you can go to what is called battery and data manager. then tap on battery mode. it's default is set to nighttime saver, which will kill your syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity in the hours between 10pm and 5am. i set mine to performance mode. this will sync all of the time and i don't really care if it takes up battery since i am awake and ready to pop in a new battery off my kick a$$ battery dock wall charger!! hope this helps....

I think it's got something to do with what HTC said about "the phone learning" when you check things like mails ect.. so after it has learned that you do not check mail (for instance) during the night it disengages activies... or not
@mykeyvee, there are no such options in the stock rom on this phone.
Anyone have any other ideas?, i want everything to be synced 24 hours a day.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings. My Desire Z is on 2.3.7 and only recently have I got this bug.
My One X is stock unrooted. No settings for power saving.
Accounts and sync>sync schedule>smart sync
Is this what is effecting you

This. I woke up and my 3G wasn't even on. I had to disable and enable data again to get connected.
Same problem here. Whenever my phone is in standby mode for a longer period of time (as far as I've seen it doesn't matter whether it's during the night or day), the data connection (3g) is disconnected.
On my previous phone, a desire Z, there was a setting 'data always on' which addressed this issue. This setting however seems to be missing on all android 4 phones.
**edit:
Contacted Dutch HTC support; they claim it's a feature. Hope they restore the setting in the future..
I have noticed this too this morning.
I woke this morning and went into the battery settings and you can see the graph that all data was shut off over night.
How do we fix this.
Piss. Wondered why it used virtually no battery overnight...

Exactly same here...just as u switch on the screen....it connects to wifi or 3g instantly...

I have received email overnight though....

I was thinking that maybe it was just the 3g/wifi connection which was going into a sleep mode after a long period of inactivity.
I've tried increasing my mail sync at night to once in 30 minutes to prevent the 3g connection from going to sleep and disconnecting. (had it at once in 4 hours)
Now when i wake up and turn the screen on, the 3g icon is already there, and my mail has been synced last in the previous 30 minutes.
Fixed it?
Same issue here, weird thing is that I can't seem to tie it down to either a specific battery-percentage nor a specific time of the day. It's really annoying though, as I would like my device to be connected 24/7. Tried setting a mail-account for 15 min update, so will see how much wifi/3g has been on tomorrow.
Edit: Definitely not a battery issue, but rather a time issue. Battery is at 80% (used the phone little today) and 3G/wifi has been disconnected for the past 2 hours even when mail is set to check every 15 min. I can see that for many people it's not important at night, but I wish we at least had the option to turn it off :/
Possible Fix
Download this app.. Minimaltext
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext&feature=search_result
Create a widget 1x1, under the tap behavior, select start another activity, then select an activity. Scroll now to settings, expand it, choose power saving setting..
Leave the rest default then press okay.
Click the widget and you will find some settings, including put data connection to sleep when screen is off. I haven't tried it. Hope this helps.
Not a bug!
This is not a bug, but a feature : scheduled standby mode
If on Sense 4.x, settings are similar to Sense 3.5, you should go into settings > power then scroll to standby mode. Default setting is auto, which means that the phone learns your sleeping phases and disable every wirless connections during this time when your screen is off, and enable it again automatically when you wake up (even if your screen is still off).
You can disable this feature, or (my favorite option) manually set the duration when you allow your phone to enter and exit deep standby mode.
(For me it's a great feature, as I really dislike having my phone producing airwaves close by my head when I'm sleeping. Before I went to Sense 3.5 on my DHD, I didn't have this option and had to enable plane mode before sleeping ant enter my PIN code every morning to exit plane mode, which was less convenient).
If you want to disable this, download smartsync disabler from the play store. Im pretty sure there is a thread on xda too with an app available to download.
...Or read my previous post... Market's bloatware is not needed, setting for this should be in power settings, as on Sense 3.5.

[Q] HTC One X MaximusHD 21.1-Some apps have problems with connecting when using WiFi

So today I've installed latest MaximusHD rom for HTC One X, and everything is super fine, except for one thing - when I'm trying to connect to my Skydrive (using official app) while on Wi-Fi I just can't do it. After awhile it just says that I should check if I have a connection. The problem does not occur when I switch to Data Transmission. Other apps usually are able to connect but it seems slower than when using Data Transmision.
I have installed the WiFi update, and when using Google Play, or browsing the internet it seems to work just fine... I also switched from Superuser to SuperSU, but the problem occured before that so I don't think it had anything to do with that (noob question - which should I use? Superuser was there by default, but is ist actually better, or there is no big difference?)
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the app?

I tried, it's still very slow.
Other odd thing is that when I turn on Data Transmission it's always showing the "H" symbol, even in the places where it previously showed "3G" or "3.5G", now it never switches. What does it mean? The speed seems fine though.
This happened to me too. And it's happening to YouTube and google play.
Could it be because I didn't do the OTA update?
In that case i have a little question: if I update the OTA do I/will it wipe all data?

Well I did the OTA update almost right away (after intalling few apps), and I saw the problem after that, so I don't think it has anything to do with that although it's suppose to fix WiFi. Oh and it didn't wipe my data.
EDIT:
Well I can't post in MaximusHD thread yet so I'll ask here, does everyone using this rom experience such a tremendous drop in battery life when using Data Transmission? On WiFi it's normal, but when using cellular it drains 5-10% in 10 minutes... That seems absurd.
bump. Seriously? Anyone knows if this problem with power drain when using cellular data transmission is also present in other clean Sense 5 Roms? Or is there a way to fix that, or maybe there is an update underway?
I just switched ROMs but was getting a full days use out of a charge. WiFi at work and home all day. So I never really used hspda.

Yes! It does this for me too. It seems to drain at something like 1% per minute for me when I have mobile data on. Wifi also drains it quickly, but not as fast. I posted about this in the Maximus thread (some other issues too) but nobody has replied. Good to know it's not just me.

Yep, hopefully there is going to be some kind of fix, I really wouldn't like to go through the whole configuration, app instalation, etc. process again.
Ok, so another thing is - some icons in one of the folders on my home screen disapear. It's always in the same folder, and only in this one, others seem to be unaffected.

Issues I'm having:
1. Crazy battery drain when I enable wifi, but particularly bad when I enable mobile data. I have a Tasker profile where if I enable wifi and connect to my home network, autosync and GPS are enabled for 2 minutes then disable themselves. Last night my phone was on 61%, I enabled wifi, and immediately it dropped to 56%.
2. When I go to bed at night I turn my phone off. If I put it on charge at night it gets to a certain point and the phone switches itself on! One night last week it switched itself on at about 89%, so I switched it off again, and about ten minutes later it switched itself on again!
3. I use Google Calendar, not the HTC one. I seem to be unable to disable the HTC calendar - the only option is to "freeze" it in my backup app.
Aside from these things, I really like the rom, but these three issues are making me wonder if I should try something like ARHD and see if the same things are present there.

Well I don't know how it is with the phone turning itself on, because I'm not turning it off to begin with.
The thing with calendar - it seems to me it was also like that when using official Sense 4+, so I don't know if it's fixable.
I think I'm going to switch to ViperX Sense 5 Rom, people seem to say good things about battery life in this one.

Yes, I know some people think the idea of switching a phone off is somehow weird, but I turn mine off at night. As an experiment I just switched my phone off here in work, plugged it in to charge it (it was on about 93% - charged overnight and it has lost 7% since I switched it on when I got up for work at 5.30) and lo and behold it powered itself on when it reached 100%. I don't want this to happen.
The calendar on Sense 4 could be disabled - I know this as I had it disabled! I prefer the Google calendar, so I disabled the HTC one. On this ROM you can only hide it, or backup apps allow it to be frozen, which is what I've had to resort to.

Well then since nobody seems to know what to do in our instance, and I have no idea if there is some kind of update for MaximusHD underway, we propably will have to switch the Roms. I usually had the mobile Data Transmission turned on all the time when outside my apartment and while it did drain the battery more than WiFi it still was enough for 8+ hours of being on with medium usage (sometimes with battery saver option ticked when I needed to be outside for a longer period of time). Now the phone would be dead after few hours.
EDIT:
Today I switched for ViperX Rom, and all of the issues I wrote about seem to be gone, Skydrive app no longer has any issues with connecting. Although I'll say something more about batery life in 2-3 days when I'll actually have a chance to see how it works. In general I can say that this ROM is a lot more customizable, and has lots of tweaks (greeat ones) I haven't seen in Maximus, but still I'll wait for a few days with my final opinion.
Ok so after using it for a few days I can tell that the ROM itself is just better in sheer terms of funcionality. First thing I noticed is that I can now put more than 16 shortcuts into Folders, the icon grid in app panel is 5x6 so now I have 3 pages to scroll instead of 7. WiFi seems work more stable but I can't say that it worked bad in MaximusHD. When it comes to battery drain while using Data Transmission - it's still there, but after a few cycles of charging it seems to get better bit by bit, if it still changes I'll let You know. ROM comes with lots of additional tools, and allows heavy customization, and reclocking the processor for better battery life. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't know what about the phone turning itself on, because I don't switch it off. In terms of the callendar I also use gogle one and I just turned of sync options in the one provided by htc. Also I'm not sure if while installing the rom You are able to choose not to install the HTC callendar.

I've gone back to my old Orange-branded 4.1.1 / Sense 4+ build. Battery life has gone through the roof, HTC calendar is disabled, everything works, no problems. As for the phone powering itself on, well, something odd happened there...
When I decided to go back to the old build I restored my Nandroid backup and reflashed my old boot.img, taking the phone back to its old setup, and all seemed well, but that night I switched it off at bedtime (still find it weird that so many people think I'm freakishly odd for daring to switch my phone off from time to time) and lo and behold, some time later, it switched itself on again! The next morning I did some searching about removing the Clockworkmod recovery, followed the instructions, and also relocked my bootloader for good measure, and guess what? Since then it hasn't powered itself on while charging. So all I can gather from this is it was either Clockworkmod or having an unlocked bootloader that caused my phone to power itself on, because as soon as these two things were changed it has behaved normally.
So anyway, I'm going to stay on this build until Orange get around to releasing 4.2, or my contract expires in April, whichever comes first. Probably the latter, as according to a post I've seen from Orange themselves they reckon the update will appear 3-6 MONTHS after the manufacturer releases it.

Heh I'm alson in Orange (poland), and we got info that the update will show up sometime mid-december. I just got tired of waiting for them to update that's why I ended up with custom roms.
Maybe it was CM fault? I'm using TWRP, tonight I'll turn it off and see if it powers back itself during the night and let you know.

During Doze mode (this kicks in when you've not moved or used the phone for a period of time, such as overnight when it's left alone) stops apps from waking the phone or running background tasks, the idea being if the phone isn't being used, it's a waste of power for apps to keep going off on line chattering or receiving notifications and displaying them to the user. Notifications that you might have got immediately, don't ping through until you press the power button the next morning.
I suspect security apps like Cerberus don't want to partake in Doze mode as they want to wake your phone up every few hours regardless and scan it, or be able to download new signatures any time.
Despite setting an app to not be optimised, it still gets stop from waking the phone using alarms during Doze (alarms are something an app can set to say wake the phone up and run the app every 10 minutes or on the hour etc). However the developer of the app can work around this by setting a new type of alarm, for Google this work around is easily detected and it wouldn't surprise me if they start alerting on the Play store about apps that are potential battery drains because they by-pass Doze. Of course some apps have to, for example an alarm clock to wake you in the morning, or something like Tasker that you set to run things at specific times, so it will be up to the developer to explain why and the person downloading to make a decision about it.

That was my post in October, this happened to Tasker: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/1...y-reasons-this-time-its-the-notorious-tasker/
It seems Google has perhaps pulled the plug on Tasker a bit too quickly due to a BETA version, but I think overall this approach is good for Android if it gets rid of battery draining apps, which usually are up to no good downloading ads or sending back data for marketing reasons. Obviously some apps are the exception to this like Tasker, which will need this exception to continue working correctly, as otherwise it will be restricted to one wake-up every 15 minutes only when the phone goes into doze mode.

Interesting reading. The question is why they even allow apps to use permission for ignoring doze, whe it most liley means ban in Play Store. Should be available to system apps only.
Note: Google Play policies prohibit apps from requesting
direct exemption from Power Management features in Android 6.0+ (Doze and App
Standby) unless the core function of the app is adversely affected.

Now the question is what authority can JUDGE whether certain app needs it or not.

LED disabled on 7.0 Nougat?

In Marshmallow we had the enable LED option under Settings -> Screen, on Nougat this option is not there anymore, Light Flow with Normal/Direct/ROOT mode doesn't work too..
Does anyone knows an easy way tô enable the LED?
Since Marshmallow I've been enabling Miracast with a simple line on build.prop, hopefully there is another for enabling the LED.
Thanks.

I noticed this on one of my apps when I set the phone down for a few hours like overnight, no light and no sound. I woke up this AM and seen no notification light and then as soon as i pressed the power button to wake up the screen the notification sound played. defiantly a bug, not sure if its with one specific app or across the board. I have yet to get a late night call, as far as I know.

The app functions perfectly until the phone is left alone for several hours then it will never notify, no light, no sound, nothing until I hit the power button., then the sound played no light obviously.
I am tempted to start a thread on this shortly, but I need to see if other apps behave the same way.

Disable battery optimizations for the poorly coded app.
Settings > Battery > three dot menu button > Battery optimization > Select Not Optimized and change to All apps > Find and select app > Pick Don't optimize > Done

I know there is that option, however I did not have to preform this in 6.0.1 for any app, so that's why I am wondering whats up and if that will make a difference or not. I do know that apps with GCS can automatically bypass this from what I read, but that has to be written into the app. I will continue to experiment with seeing what apps do it or do not do it without messing around with turning off optimization for any app like with 6.0.1 . Either this version of doze is overly aggressive or its a bug

Or the app hasn't been updated to cope with the improvements made to doze in N.

Well, in any case its too early to tell what it is, at least for my level of understanding the android OS as well as some others on here.
I guess I will just sit tight n wait and see what others are saying about notifications
Thanks

From my understanding/experience, Doze is significantly more aggressive now than it was in 6. Which is great for battery life, but annoying when you're watching TV and expecting an email or some such.
The charging comment in my other post was due to the understanding that doze is disabled while charging; if you charge over night everything should come in normally, but if you just leave the phone down then it will not.

I thought that might be what you might be getting at .
If doze is more aggressive, i think it is overly aggressive to the point where sometime within an hour of setting your phone down it will only alert for calls/text messages, nothing else, then if the text come in early enough in the light the notification light will completely stop by the time you wake up. I am just not too happy about how overly aggressive this is as like you stated expecting someone to contact you in some way you are SOL. I don't think one should have to go through every single app to set it manually, that is pointless IMO
I have re flashed my system partition since the factory images came out a few hours ago so maybe(not) that could help but I am not optimistic.
Thanks for clearing that up

Doze does not completely kill the services. It just adds more and more delay to its syncing, so even if doze is working aggressively, the notifications should be delayed (like by some seconds or minutes), not completely disabled. The case you are stating doesn't seems normal. I don't know if the apps need to be updated.

So, at least in my case, I solved this issue with the notification light. I went into Settings --> System UI Tuner --> Other --> Power Notification Controls --> and turned them on. Then, Settings --> Notifications --> Touchdown (the app that was giving me problems) --> and changed the notification level from Auto to Level 4 (one down from the top).
Since then, the notification light works as expected.
