Epic 4G on Page Plus - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I found a couple posts here regarding flashing the Samsung Epic 4G to use on Page Plus, along with the comprehensive Google Document on how to do it.
My questions are:
If I follow this process and get an Epic 4G on Page Plus, can I flash custom ROMs to the phone whenever I want or will flashing the ROMs overwrite what I did to get the phone on Page Plus and will I have to do it every time I flash a custom ROM?
Also, I could really figure out from the posts or the document if everything works normally on the Epic once on Page Plus or if it is quirky and has random things that don't work.
I guess what I'm asking is, is this a good idea? I don't need to do this but I'm on Page Plus with my Droid X2, which I am beginning to hate because I cant get a decent up to date ROM on it (JB), and a friend is offering to sell his Epic 4G for a good price and I want to stay on Page Plus, which I really like.
Thanks!

I've been using Pageplus on my Epic4G for almost a year now and I can tell you that flashing any kinda of Rom (stock or custom) will not effect your pageplus service, except maybe for data which you need to edit the APN settings (using "apn backup" app from the market) every time you install a new rom to your phone.
Data speed are spotty and so slow with Sprint phones on Pageplus that if the data worked for you in the first place. ( I have 100mb on my PP monthly plan, but I didn't use any of it since I've migrated to cm10, used to be working with stock roms).
also, I don't know yet if voice-mail notification is fully working now or not, but mostly keep checking from time to time just in case someone left you a voice-mail.
Other than the data and voice-mail issues, everything else is working fine like any other phone.

Thanks for the reply Sohip. I am unclear on the data issues though. You said:

Are you saying data is really spotty and slow on Page Plus with the Epic in general or doesn't work at all? I have a 2gb data plan and I've never had speed or spotty issues with PP on my Droid X2 at all. Is this something specific to the Epic on PP?
If that's the case I suppose I'm just better off sticking with the Droid X2?
Thanks!

I think they are specific only to Sprint phones on Pageplus, my data speed on speedtest.net are like 0.2 mb only.. do you know what's your data speed on your verizon phone with pageplus?

question regarding metropcs

Ive got a dude that will flash my DINC with calls text and data..
What I want to know is , Im currently running a custom rom. after he flashes it.
Will I still be able to flash roms. etc without anything breaking. etc..
35 bucks a months for 2 DINCS with unlimited everything is hard to pass up..
Plus I have wifi everywhere i go. so the slow data will not be a problem for me..
thanks,
What specifically is he flashing?
ah he said for 50 bucks and the first month free. voice text and data. And where i live it should have 3g data. etc. but im sure its spotty. mine is rooted running sense-less rev. and my wifes is all stock. no root. etc..
I've been running MetroPCS since November without any problems. I had Metro flash the phone and I used the Eris tutorial for MMS, web, and apps the involve the web. Everything is fully fuctional. When you go and flash a new rom, only talk and text will work. You have to follow the tutorial to get back the rest. I pretty much just flashed my favorite roms and did a back up for each one after establishing working MMS, web, and apps. Although data is kind of slow, it gets the job done. And for $40 a month for unlimited everything, I'm not one to complain.
so basicly find a rom I like and stick with it.. unless i want to learn how to bring back data after after a new rom flash..
I can handle that...guess i will do some flashing today to find a perfect rom for me.. really like lou's sense-less rom great batt life a with his 4# kernal..
Your talk and text will remain if you flash a new ROM. Don't flash the RUU however.
Sent from my M860 using XDA App
Think my plan has changed. Metro's coverage out in my area sucks.. so might just get the samsung intercept on virgin mobile for 27 bucks a month. and keep my DINC for everything else..
wish we could flash to virgin.lol oh well

Noob questions need answers

So im getting my 4g touch today but have issue with sprint data signal around my area. Im in AIT training and need my phone tether without costing and without getting caught. Also is there any way to strengthen the data signal. I see 3g x1 but no clue what that means and last whats the best rom for what i listed for. Appreciate anyone that helps and much appreciation.
The 3g and 1x just means you are either A) in an area that you are getting full 3G coverage. B) 1x means the speed of your service has dropped to below that of what 3G is "supposed" to be so things like internet and the like are going to perform slower. Not sure about the tether as I do not use it sorry :/
for tether hop on a custom rom. I believe most if them here have a hotspot hack. try calkulins 2.9.1 or blu kuban 2.0. I have had best results with those. welcome buddy. happy flashing. remember to NOT use rom manager and to read around beforehand so you don't own a brick.
Why not

I've used Rom Manager for quite some time.. never had an issue. Also, soft bricking is a worry.. but not life threatening for your device. It's more of an annoyance. Also, if you are using an Samsung Epic 4g Touch.. MAKE SURE YOU SEARCH SAMSUNG EPIC 4G TOUCH. The Galaxy S2 on here is not your phone.
Happy Flashing to you sir..
P.S. I recommend Changing your PRL to 11115 and getting Roam Control.. So far it is the best combo that I've found.
If you don't know how to change your PRL... there are many threads devoted to such a task. Good Luck

Upgrading my Epic 4G

Hi guys,
I currently own a Samsung Epic 4G (D700) running Android 2.3.6. I have been having some issues with it (crashing, freezing, and rebooting randomly), and I have been doing some Android app development lately, and have decided that I need an upgrade. Before buying a whole new phone, however (a bit out of my price range), I wanted to see what my options were for this phone. Is it possible to upgrade it to a newer version of Android? Besides the crashing, I have discovered a few other issues. For example, I learned that this device does not support Bluetooth HID profiles, which some of my dev projects require. What would you guys suggest?
Just a warning, I'm a bit of a n00b at phone mods, so I may have to ask a lot of questions...
Thanks,
Matt

Yes. This is definitely doable. I long ago upgraded my Epic 4G to CyanogenMod, where it is still a fully supported phone even after all this time. I think the version of CyanogenMod where I left it was probably JellyBean (was that 4.2)? At that point the Epic 4G Touches made it into my price range and I moved on to that, but in actuality, that newer phone had LESS support from CyanogenMod than the Epic 4G did for a long time. The one thing to be aware of when you upgrade though is that you are going to lose 4G (in these older phones, Sprint used WiMAX for 4G). Google took WiMAX out of their source code, so it's gone for good at this point. My Epic 4G Touch also suffered the same fate, though honestly, I'm by a WiFi AP so much of the time that I don't even notice/care.
If you want to go the upgrade route, go to CyanogenMod's website and click the "download" link at the top. Ignore anything about their new installer because you have to be at least an S3 to be supported. Under the download link, you'll see a list of devices on the left hand side. Unfortunately, they aren't named very intuitively, but the one you want is the "epicmtd". That one corresponds to the Epic 4G. I'd grab the latest nightly, not any of the stable branches. The reason is that CyanogenMod changed their release naming, and they no longer issues "stable" branches. They just have nightlies and monthlies, and the goal is that while they might not be guaranteed to be bug free, they should be pretty close.
For instructions on what to do with that download, go back to the CyanogenMod homepage and click on "Wiki" at the top. Then click on "Devices". Then click on "vendor" and put a checkmark in the box next to "Samsung" in the dropdown list. A big list of devices will show up. Click the Samsung Epic 4G. Links to Installation instructions can be found there. Hopefully they are pretty up to date and things go well for you. But just be prepared for the fact that it IS possible to mess the phone up to the point that it is difficult or impossible to recover it. So if you have no money at all for a new phone if you totally destroy yours, you may want to reconsider upgrading.
Good luck!

@AlgebraicMirror, A HUGE thank you goes out to you! This was one of the most comprehensive sets of directions I've seen. I had no idea the device-specific instructions page even existed! I have installed CyanogenMod on my device and am in the process of setting it up now. I'll let you know if I need a hand with anything else. Thanks once again!
Regards,
Matt

Awesome! Good luck and I hope it all works out well for you! One other thought I just had (and I wish I would have thought of this before) is that the limited amount of RAM on the Epic 4G *might* be a problem for you with the very latest versions of KitKat. I'm not sure if that will be the case, but it's possible. In that case I'd recommend trying to grab an older version of CM that is still in the 4.X series. Maybe CyanogenMod 9, which I think I ran for quite a while on that phone with good success.
I personally think you'll be fine, since my current Epic 4G Touch has 794 MB, and I typically have a little over 400 free. But, when opening up a lot of apps that number can fall to as low as 100 MB free. So I think you should be able to support the base OS, but depending on how big the apps are that you are writing, or how many you want to have open, you may start to feel pretty constrained by RAM space.
Again, good luck and let us know how it goes!

I was expecting RAM to be an issue. I was actually planning on it. I bought a new phone anyway so it really doesn't matter too much. I have had a couple of issues with certain apps crashing during use. I think I only have 512MB of RAM on this thing.
Anyway, thanks once again. It's great being able to write apps for a newer version of Android!
Cheers,

Samsung Galaxy S4 MetroPCS (SGH-M919N)

Hello all so I have recently swtiched to MetroPCS and the phone I currently have is a Samsung Galaxy S4 (M919N)
SGH-M919N
Version 4.4.4
It is completely stock.
After paying for the 60$ unlimited plan I guess now at the start of the month they include a free 6.7gb of data, or maybe it was only for the activation, because I haven't been with them in a while I'm not sure.
Regardless, I burned through that overnight, so I found this "Google Chrome Extension" that allows for unlimited hotspot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6ejhaP2aJI
However it does allow me to browse, but at extremely slow speeds (~76kbps) and sometimes it doesn't even fully load webpages or it gives me a 403 FORBIDDEN error. When I was on the MetroPCS actual hotspot I was pushing 10mpbs so I know the speed is far faster.
Basically I am trying to figure out what I need to do to get the full speed and bypass this thing, I can even tether but again it's still slow as heck.
Also, I have a lot of MetroPCS bloatware on there, Rhapsody playlist is one of the things on the top of one of the home screens that I can't even move, I wanted to know what was the best custom recovery/ROM to install. I know there's a one click or one touch automatic root or something...but I'd prefer to do it the way I did my M7 unless it's recommended to do it that way.
I had the M7 for T-Mobile with ARHD installed and TWRP which was nice it was fully functional it was my first time for both of those types of mods and everything went smoothly. (~a month ago)
I switched phones because my HTC's headphone jack stopped working and I had a guy who was willing to trade me phones, his Galaxy was fully functional and even though I explained to him my phone wasn't completely he told me he fixes phones all the time, thus the trade was made.
But for this particular phone....especially considering it's MetroPCS I am having a God-awful time finding any information online especially regarding my issue. Also for those that say, "Just pay for more data" I am a broke college student and I use this to do my school work...aside from going to the library, which sometimes is way too packed and there's usually no where to sit (I'm a UofA student) this is the only way for me to do anything.
If anyone has any information tutorials etc I would greatly appreciate it, I read some forums but none addressed my issue and none seemed to lead me in the right direction. I don't HAVE to install a custom ROM right off the bat...I can deal with the bloatware but what I NEED absolutely right now is the full speed of the hotspot.
Thanks everyone!
