Another reason to NOT use root toolkits.. http://www.symantec.com/connect/fr/blogs/malware-uses-google-go-language
Malware Uses Google Go Language
Designed in 2007 and introduced in late 2009, the Go programming language developed by Google has been gaining momentum the past three years. It is now being used to develop malware. Recently seen in the wild, Trojan.Encriyoko is a new threat associated with components which are written in Go. The Trojan attempts to encrypt various file formats on compromised computers, rendering the encrypted files unusable.
The original sample we acquired, a file named GalaxyNxRoot.exe, is actually a dropper written in .NET which disguises itself as a rooting tool to trick users into installing it.

Figure 1. GalaxyNxRoot.exe properties
Once executed, the GalaxyNxRoot.exe file drops and launches two executable files, both written in Go:
%Temp%PPSAP.exe
%Temp%adbtool.exe
The dropped PPSAP.exe file is an information-stealing Trojan. It collects system information such as current running processes, user name, MAC address, etc., and posts it to the following remote location:
The dropped adbtool.exe file downloads an encrypted file from the following remote location:
This file is decrypted as a Dynamic-link library (DLL) file and then loaded. It attempts to encrypt various file formats on the compromised computer. The targeted file formats include:
Source code files (.c, .cpp, .cs, .php, .java, .pas, .vb, .frm, .bas, .go, .asp, .aspx, .jsp, .pl, .py, .rb)
Image files (.jpg, .png, .psd)
Audio files (.wav, .wma, .amr, .awb)
Archive files (.rar, .zip, .iso, .gz, .7z)
Document files (file extensions containing the following strings: doc, xls, ppt, mdb, pdf)
Other types of files (file extensions containing the following strings: dw, dx, sh, pic, 111, win, wvw, drw, grp, rpl, mce, mcg, pag)
Figure 2. Targeted file formats
The file paths are confirmed by the Trojan in order to avoid encrypting files under certain paths, such as %Windir%, %ProgramFiles%, %UserProfile%\Local Settings, and others.
The encryption uses the Blowfish algorithm. It either reads the encryption key from D:\nepia.dud or randomly generates one. The names of all of the encrypted files are then saved to the following location:
%Temp%\vxsur.bin
Restoration of the encrypted files will be difficult, if not impossible.
Symantec detects all these files: GalaxyNxRoot.exe as Trojan.Dropper, PPSAP.exe as Infostealer, adbtool.exe as Downloader, and zdx.dll as Trojan.Encriyoko.

Unless you have come up with your own root method and not just following a step by step thread, you really have no room to talk. The simple fact is that it is their phone, their property, and they can do with it as they please. Isn't that why we support Android? If you don't like the threads about people bricking their phone, don't open it. I hardly see how typing "oem bootloader unlock" teaches you the ins and outs of your phone. Drama queens...
(and just for the record, I have never used a toolkit)
Might as well make a thread about installing .EXE or using Facebook, or opening email attachments, or...the list go on & on. You can get a virus from almost anything...if you are careless & stupid.
Pointless.

To type these commands, you will have to read up to install android adk and all the drivers, even if you follow the step by step guides blindly, you will learn something in the long run if you keep doing it.

Agreed...you can probably get a virus on your TV now, but that won't discourage using websites/streaming on your TV either. The internet is still the "Wild Wild West" -- you have to watch your back or where you venture to.
I think toolkits should onoy be used by people who know 110% of what they are doing, just to save time and effort, NOT by n00bs trying to learn the platform
If you cant manually root a Nexus device, you shouldn't be flashing roms or modding. Period.

So if we don't use root toolkits we should never have problems with malware or viruses lol, if only that was the case, I fail to see how one instance of a untrusted malware infected toolkit is the cause of everyone's worries an concern as its a bit more widespread than just a toolkit but I like how you somehow managed to blame toolkits for all the malware out there, I agree toolkits can cause problems by people not understanding how their phone works but malware is not one of them, people know what av is these days even if they are careless enough to not use a trusted app or get something like this, considering the toolkit everyone uses an trusts is made by a senior xda mod an not this toolkit is very unlikely to happen.

To run it, just like the previous ones...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0\XDE.exe" "C:\Users\YOU\Desktop\WM70C1.en-US.unlocked.bin" /VMID {E575DA31-FC47-4766-853F-018D823B9EE6}
Or you can place the file in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Emulation\Images" with the name "WM70C1.en-US.bin" and debug with visual studio and it will launch. I believe this still does NOT work with https connections which is probably causing lots of things to not work. Hopefully we can get that figured out so we have a fully working build.
So here's the download!

No-one unlocked this yet...
Barring any unforeseen issues, it'll be done in a few hours. Hold tight.
Any chance you could enable the task manager ans shortcuts while you're at it? Will save me having to redo the unlock when I get back to the office.

RustyGrom,
Thanks a bunch for doing this!
A couple of comments from a developer who's intensively used the unlocked ROM for the last couple of months:
1. The "Task Manager" and "Shourtcuts" (File System Explorer) programs were missing from the last unlocked ROM. Any chance we can have those back?
I've got samples of how those apps looked like in the original unlocked rom @
justinangel.net/WindowsPhone7UnlockedRoms
2. HTTPs was disabled on the last unlocked ROM, which makes using this ROM for development of real world apps pretty hard. See more on this issue @
imaginativeuniversal.com/blog/post/2010/08/01/WP7-Tip-done28099t-use-the-unlocked-ROM-for-development.aspx
3. If you can ship a dump of the ROM as well as the unlocked eumator - that'll be awesome.
Again, thanks a bunch for doing this. You're definitely contributing to WP7 development efforts.
This ought to do the trick. Add Account and whatnot is still broken though =/

1. I plan on trying to get those back. I don't think it would be too hard. Just need to find the binaries and figure out how to get them into the BIN (I've never added files but it shouldn't be too bad).
2. This one is super tricky. I did some testing on it and once you made ANY sort of material change, it stopped working. It was EXTREMELY annoying. It's almost as if they have some sort of checksum action going on that nukes the certificate checking if you mod the OS.
3. Will do.
It just frustrates me that Microsoft won't release it this way. CLearly if we can unlock it, so can they. They're just making the gap between the "haves" (those with devices) and the "have nots" that much wider.
Tried playing a youtube video just for fun and it asked if i wanted to download the app for it from the marketplace. Said yes but the marketplace doesnt connect.
It really stinks they dont allow you to add accounts.

It worked for me using Windows XP.
The first time it did not work for me and I looked around and found some people thought their stock cable was the problem. I thought I'd have to go buy a new one, no biggie.
Today I opted to charge my phone while working and lo and behold I had success! I copied files back and forth, no problem. Same cable, same computer.
Try again?
There was no real difference between the two attempts. The first time I opened up 'Internal Storage' it was blank, any drag and drop was met with the invalid cursor. I refreshed, nothing. The next day, after the laptop was asleep, no problems.
There's an old app called XNJB for Mac OS X
I found an app today via Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
Its called XNJB - it's amazing that it actually works (kind of), considering it was made for MP3 players years ago...
I'm going to keep looking at it- but already it has more (native) flexibility than that of Android File Transfer - keep in mind that that flexibility doesn't actually work (yet).
I can't believe that Android File Transfer is all they gave to Mac Users OTB - it's such crap, reminds me of the various Blackberry tools back in 2004.
What about FTP?
If you have Wi-Fi at home you can use the free, open source app File Expert.
It's a really great file explorer for android and has an option to turn your phone into an ftp server. If you're on Linux you can use filezilla or whatever to log into your phone and transfer files. I'm on windows and find the wireless transfer to be much more convenient than using a cable. Transfer speeds are great too.

Search before posting. It's right there in the forum rules. You may call him "kind of a douche" if you like, but from our perspective this is spam.
At most, this is worthy of yet another reference to it in the Registry Tweaks thread. I could understand creating a new thread if you'd released a new app to automate it (because there totally aren't enough theming apps yet...) but even if this were a brand new tweak, it should have gone in the existing registry tweaking thread.
That said, I do appreciate your desire to help explain the exact steps. Just, please consider the most apropriate avenue for doing so.

Looks like you are a really smart boy
I don't think you guys understand. I was just trying to make a clear step by step guide to doing what i thought was a pretty cool tweak.
As you can see, I just recently migrated from android, and I'm loving windows phone so far. I guess the WP dev community is a bit different, and that's just something i'll have to learn to get used to.
That said, what do you think i should do next? Delete the thread? post it in a different forum?
Thanks for helping a WP noob out!
PS: the "for like a month" part was a bit exagerated. I only got my WP device 2 weeks ago
My inclination would just be to lock it and let it fall of the first page (I'm aware that posting this bumps it, but meh). I don't frequent the Adroid forums, but if they're cool with (or full of) people "discovering" a tweak (you can't even call it a hack; the registry editor itself is the hack, this is just one way to use it) and making a post in the OS-wide dev&hacking sub-forum... Oh, and then there's the fact that the registry tweak thread (which has been running for well over a year) shows up right away if you type the first three words of your subject line into the Search.
I've made this mistake before - come new to a community, figured something out, thought it was super-cool, and posted about it without checking if anybody was likely to benefit from my post. I've done that once, to be more specific. It's embarrassing, but no real harm done. This is probably the reason that actual newbies to the forum (as opposed to people in your position, with lots of posts in another section) aren't initially allowed to start threads in this section. It gives people time to learn how the forum works.
Take your lumps, let the thread die, and start seeing if you can build on what we already know. There are still lots of cool hacks and tweaks to be discovered within this OS. We do welcome newbies with cool new hacks, for sure. Just, please make sure it's actually new (for example, with anything relating to the registry, do a search on the relevant registry key). Also bear in mind that new threads in this section usually include apps or other simple ways to apply the hack (for example, not everybody can run WP7 Root Tools).
I honestly don't see the harm, and think you're all being a little douchy. This isn't just a place where the "regulars" come to pat each other on the back, there are plenty of us who had no idea such a thing was possible and would be (are) grateful for the post. I don't go digging through the registry on my own, because I know I'd break something. So this simple post showing me what to do and what it looks like is much appreciated.
What are you all worried about? That this one thread will bump your uber-super-awesome-cool thread off the first page? Give the guy a break. I've been checking out every interesting thread in this forum for 6 months and hadn't noticed someone posting this tweak in this way.
Nope theres assholes in this community too ! Im about to switch to Android altogether because of snobism of Microsoft (I cant blame Microsoft really) ,but like in the Android section xda has run out some of the best devs there was ,hell most of them arent even considered devs ,not sure why either, BTW that was a very clear and concise guide

2. Write "slmgr /rearm" and press enter
When it comes to RTM build watermark, It worked but I had a bit of a problem replacing the shell32.dll.mui file. But I fixed this by renaming the file and then just copying the file in to the correct folder.
Hope this helps.
currently all the volume rtm have been activated by kms server

The mods said this type of discussion is okay as long as there are no download links to the leaked OS, or any methods of permanently activating it. Neither of said things are in this thread.

Yes, this has been sent to RTM... Yes, people CAN have it, legally and fully activated.
However, if you have the watermarks, it is NOT activated, nor is it Illegal to use and run this way. This is a trial period for you to use and then you will be forced to activate to keep using.
Any discussions around how to bypass/extend this trial period, or discussions on how to get the information to do so should be prohibited as that is not part of the usage agreement when installed as trial.
Removing the watermark is a grey area, however, not really "illegal".

Legal is possible, even if it is not available retail.

That screenshot doesn't prove you own it legally though

Well if MOD think this is warez remove it, sure.
But this is basically visual mod, and DOESNT affect activation in any way!
And still you get that big watermark over all applications telling you you need to activate windows, so not even this helps much :/

True enough I guess. Regardless, I do own it legally. If not, my employer would have issues since they made the product.

Great.. Thanks a lot for sharing the tutorial..
I followed all the steps but it won't let me replace shell32.dll.mui, I get a window saying "Folder In Use" ... "the action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program... try again" I closed everything I could but I still can't replace the file, any ideas why?

Rename the original file first then restart explorer.exe from task manager now replace/copy the modded file to the location where the renamed file..
That works for me, hope yours too. Thanks.
PS. Dont forget to restart PC after replacing all files and before restart do the command prompt thingy as administrator as what on the tutorial says.

How does this not help? Shouldn't the developers see this as it directly affects the sdk

YOU ARE NOT DEVELOPING ANYTHING. This is an FYI which belongs in general.

No but YOU ARE so trying to help YOU while YOU develop. Next time i won't.

I'm not a developer you dont see my theme in the dev section. seriously though. You don't have to get all upset you posted in the incorrect section. Its been moved now we can let it go. Read the forum rules.... the android development section is strictly for development. Roms... kernels...mods. Not general information.

Ok now I'm confused...don't you make themes? And i can't see where people are from this app. It just shows the threads. If i hit post new thread, it doesn't ask me where to put it. It just does it.
I have option of...read..unread...participated. I have thegnex favorated. Trust me, i should rather not see all the posts about the htc, Sony, Nokia, etc. nothing can do about it. Half the time it force closes on me so have to clear cache to make it work. Always have
End up posting in wrong phones then have to keep getting the updates cuz it automatically subscribes me if i post to it and doesn't matter if i unsubscribe, they stay in my read tab and keeps it current. It's dumb
Agreed, this is not useful for developers. Any regular user will likely have the Java plugin installed, not just developers. As a Java hobbyist developer (not for Android), I'm obviously not going to uninstall Java. Uninstalling it would also prevent you from using ADB, which is undesirable.
However, I might disable the Java plugin from my main web browsers, assuming my version (I'm on Java 6, not 7) is affected, which so far I cannot find any information about one way or the other.
Plus, that article author (Emil) seems to be spreading FUD against Java, using words like "kill it with fire" and several times linking to his own blog posts as a source of information. Very unprofessional. His previous blog posts just one month ago were about two vulnerabilities - I just checked and they are already patched in my current version of Java (6 update 33). The auto-updater probably ran a week or two ago? Seems like Oracle is doing its job.
Exploits happen, this will be patched, and users should keep updated to protect themselves. Not much different from any other software.
Look, I was checking the news from the Google news app, saw this, and shared. Trying to help all the people that give us these kick ASS roms. There were multiple articles by different people. I chose the ones I felt had some useful information..like what to do if you must use it. I don't know how many of you have been straight nailed with a virus that leaves your hard drive in a r/o raw state..but it sucks ass. Was trying to give a heads up warning to the devs here. Not to tell them to disable java, but more of a heads up and if anything did start to get funky on their system, this could be a possibility therefore narrowing down where to look. If you don't agree...your opinion but others might find it to be useful so saying it's not is unnecessary. I personally find it useful for the simple fact sdk needs java. First thing it does on install is look for jre and if don't have it, it doesn't install. Can't develop if don't have the sdk.
Can't fault me for posting a security flaw, no matter what it pertains to.
