ICS & JB Speed vs Oxygen.. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all..
For those praising the latest ICS and JB roms for their speed, have you ever been on Oxygen 2.3.2 ? That is worth saying it's flying..
I thought the time had come to switch to android 4 on my desire.. But after dozens of tries of different releases, it never comes near the speed of my daily (modded) Oxygen rom..
Thought I would share this to see if I am doing something wrong or if there are people who share the same feeling..
Last.. I would like to clarify that I don't want to disrespect the developers of the roms like Sandvold, Elk759, Nikez,.. I appreciate their work very much, but I don't understand the reviews from others users, especially about speed..

Since Oxygen development has been discontinued awhile ago, is there any reason not to use it? Is it still based on the latest aosp code from Google, or has there been some important security updates that are missing from Oxygen? I'm also back using Oxygen after trying ics a few times. There was always some problems. And CM 7.2 allways reboots if I have walking navigation on, and I turn the screen off for a while to save some battery... With Oxygen everything works very snappy.

Oxygen development stopped a while ago indeed, there is an update by roalex that dates from april/2012
so thats pretty recent.. it also implements apps to sd-ext or data2sd in the framework, if you want it..
(i use the oxygenr2 hboot, gives me 330 mb.. more than enough)
Grtz

I really liked that Roalex version. Swype to clear notifications is alot smoother, ics animations are nice. But, standard apps to sd doesn't work properly. You can move apps to sd just fine, but you can't move them back. That's not a big problem but I just don't like roms that add something, and while doing that also break some standard functionality.

I agree with the speed of Oxygen Rom and would prefer it over any rom but right now I'm too dependent on CM7's tweaks its hard for me to go back to Oxygen.
via xda app

What tweaks..?

Everything under CyanogenMod settings.

Lol.. Very informative..

Flash the rom if you haven't and you'll literally get lost with all the settings available on the rom. It sacrifices a bit of speed compared to Oxygen but still a lot faster than any other rom out there.

What CM rom do you recommend then.. There are so many..

I used the latest nightly version and its very very good, flawless infact. I downloaded the rom, changed the launcher to latest holo launcher, added INT2EXT and done loads of work in UOT Kitchen and when the rom is installed uv got all the Cyanogenmod settings to play with. U wont be disapointed coz theres just so much u can do with it. Or.... u can just leave the rom as it is and its still great

I use the latest nightlies as well. Try the last stable release. If you encounter some issues with the gps or mobile data/wifi on that version try the nightlies.

I've tried the nightly build.. Not really my thing.. Gonna stick with the oxygen /roalex..
Thnx for the he recommends though..

Try mildwild based on cm
Ics themed and heavy tweaked

Using Oxygen 2.3.2 with personal customizations for a long time.
Can't be more satisfied with its stable and snappy speed.
Since I am using Oxygen_R2 hboot for maximum data size, so CM7 is never an option for me.
If I am going to ICS/JB, I would rather change to a new device.

Addicted to flashing ROM's ?? LOL

So i probably flash a new ROM maybe every second day at the latest lol, my wife reckons i should just make my office a new bedroom for my and my phone lol. ive tried about all of them i think, except the MIUI versions, tried one, didnt like it at all.
Out of pretty much all of them in the "Desire Index" i think i like Oxygen and ReflexTSense 1.8 the best i've flashed between them both many times...
At one point i had 7 ROM's backed up in clockwork ready to go just incase i had a panic attack (not really) and had to flash another ROM while in the drive through at burger king hahaha.
Any ideas what i can do next? ive tried building one and i got as far as using the kitchen in Ubuntu and a bit of Eclipse but i gave up after not being able to open the android .XML files lol.
SO... what can i flash thats not in the list or who can give me some more ideas about building or creating a theme?
I have flashed about 10 times in the last 2 weeks
currently using leedriod 2.3d and so far this is the one that spends the most time on my phone
Yea i definitely like LeeDroid 2.3d also, very reliable. the only reason i like ReflexTSense over LeeDroid is the HD Rom has a slightly better stock email app, the small fonts are kinda cool i think, and a just a few extra other little things i like about HD roms
I am addicted to SENSE ROMS, right now i am using AuraxTSense and quite happy with it until i find some thing that catches my interest. What would you recommend i try as a SENSE HD ROM.
I have the DESIRE.

I would recomend either ReflexTSense Or iNsertCoin 2.0.1 For iNsert you need to partition your card using the FAT,1GB EXT4, 300MB EXT4 and 100MB EXT4. so if thats a bit tricky stick with Reflex
I would lean towards Reflex, seems a tiny bit faster and you dont have to partition (apart from the standard FAT then EXT3 which you can do through ROM Manager) and i still have tones of apps installed and still have 127mb internal left
There are other good ones but ive tried about 9 or 10 of them and these 2 are the best IMO
I'm using a MIUI rom just for the folders.
the same to me, I have flashed 6 times between redux, amethyst and oxygen in last two week, finally, I stay on the redux.
Well...Now, I am using InsertCoin 2.0.1 Datas2Ext.
I flashed my Desire only during the search for a ROM that is suitable to my taste and needs.
I have flashed LeeDroids, RCmixHD, RCs Z, and DeFrost before I tried BaadNewz 1.3.
I have also tried one of the MIUIs and I don't like it...it is a bit too..iPhone-ish.
After flashing BaadNewz ROM (now InsertCoin), I know I have found what I have been searching for and decided to stick with the ROM.
So..it is not really an addiction for me.
You can flash the new 2.3.3 roms and post your thoughts and result

Definitely has awesome battery life I was having a few issues with wifi on 2.0.2. Giving the latest redux a try tonight seems good so far. But I really like 2.0.1 oxygen. Really well put together ROM and quick as.
Tones of room after flashing the delvik 2sd script also

I'm a bit of a crackhead-level ROM addict, I tried using RCmixHD DeSenseized 3.5 A2SD+ and then realized that i could not make or recieve phone calls, and so flashed mini-sense only to find that the recommended A2SD+ script doesn't work at all, reverted back to a CM7 RC3 backup to then go to ReflexTsense 8.4 which i decided is the ROM for me(for now at least)....all in one night!!
P.s: is EXT3 better than EXT4 at handling most A2SD+ ROMs? (specifically DHD roms)
EDIT: Just wanna give a shoutout to Rerware's MyBackup Root for being so fast at restoring apps!
Haven't flashed a new ROM in weeks, found Redux 1.1.0 and I've been more than happy, first Gbread rom I've had that's been fault-free so far.
And trackball wake <3

ext4 shorten card life? why is that?
i used leedroid for awhile but the dsp manager on the mini site doesnt work proeprly for me. it crackles and pops if i even turn on the equaslizer. so i went to cool hd which is by far in my eyes, the best most stable hd rom out there. used it for afew weeks. never had a reboot or fc. just recently changed to cyanogen rc3 to give er a try. the thing u gotta do is find the rom that suits you. gingersense suits me but until shes done, cyanogen rc4 and cool sense hd is where il stay

Im a noob so dont take my word on it, but I've heard flash memory becomes slower over time the more you write on it. EXT4 has a feature called journaling that I guess should be relatively similar to indexing service on windows. It will improve performance at the cost of writing data more often, hence the shorter life expectancy.
Now lets see if a real geek feels like showing us some light on this matter so I can eat my words.

CM7 or Oxygen?

I am wondering what your thoughts are between Oxygen and CM7? I know the technical differences, but I am currently on Oxygen and am interested in changing (for no other reason than to try another ROM!).
But, how do you guys compare the two (those who have used both). Which would you use and why?
Cheers
oxygen is simply android in its purest form
cm7 is a bit modified android, with some really cool tweaks that extend the capabilities of the phone.
only way to find out which suits you better is trying cm7

Heh, yeah, I wanted to do a quick switch and see what suited me, but obviously it takes a while because I have to reflash the correct AlphaRev Hboot (using Oxygen one atm) and then do CM7... then Titanium Backup etc... I need my phone a lot for work, so I don't want to be messing about with it too much.
So I kinda wanted to hear peoples thoughts before deciding whether I wanted to do the switch
Fun fact of the day: You're not the first one with this question.

Cm isn't bad at all, but cm7 hboot isn' t good enough if you wanna intall lots of apps. I switched to cm some time ago, but when i realized that most of the added features had no use for me i came back: i didn't want a rom too bloated for my needs...o2 imho also has currently better battery life and feels a bit snappier when using lpp (and not only that), thalamus has done some awesome job with the kernel lately.
I tried them both. I liked oxygen more since it has more space and less mods.
At the end I preferred the sense rom of InsertCoin since Sense has a great interface.
I too settled for Oxygen.
Feels faster, simple, great battery life and CM7 didn't have a good danish keyboard dictionary when i tried it
I went oxygen. CM7 had issues with installing apps >5mb and i got lots of random FCs with Facebook, Camera and a lot of other applications. Oxygen has been great.
I'm using CM7. Not the nightly builds. The stable release.
Unfortunately the last version of oxygen I used was a Froyo build. So I can't really compare. I haven't had my phone for almost two months thanks to a faulty mainboard.
I don't have any negative comments towards CM. I think overall stability might be a bit better. They seem to have more developers working on it and pumping out fixes.
Then of course there is Oxygen which is lighter and running the latest version of android (compared to CM stable release). I heard that 2.3.4 fixes some GPS issues. So I'm keen to jump ship.
The only thing stopping me... is being too lazy to setup my phone again.
If you don't mind losing a little bit of data partition, you can just use the CM7 HBOOT for either ROM - Oxygen will work fine with it.
I'm using oxygen and i'm really happy with it. Know it is a small problem, but cm7 had an annoying fileexplorer that gave me some problems. Oxygen is the way to go! Also, for me it is smoother, and i like stock android laucher over adw.

Check out Cyanogen but don't expect from it too be as fast as oxygen. I liked it.

oxygen or dev-null all the way cm7 just wasnt as snappy and some of the extras in cm7 are good but youll find yourself not using them. Thalamus's kernels are awesome and oxygen is as stable as can be. Dev-null is even lighter if your feeling adventurous.....
I was usinging an older build of Oxygen and my handset kept rebooting! Would wake up in the morning and the phone would be hung on the boot screen.
Gonna give it another chance though, any more problems and its back to CM7
I <3 OxygeN, the only thing I miss from using Oxygen is 720p recording and widescreen pixtures, apart from that its awesome! Android 2.3.4, stable, fast, no reboots, I've settled on it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've found myself always going back to CM7. I've tried Oxygen numerous times, even the new version but it falls short. I've had bugs and all sorts of things but I miss the CM Settings mostly.
Just a hint, DevNull is a pre-release of Oxygen. Just a straight build with just enough development to run on the Desire.
cm7 feels more stable
For pure ASOP, might want to go with Oxygen ROM. Using it now and enjoying it
I prefer Oxygen to CM, but then I also prefer Redux to Oxygen, esp the themed version with the lcd density at 204
i use cm7 for myself, because oxygen is a bit to light. it should be fast and long bat life, but if you turn off all the cool stuff for performance and bat life, you don't need a smart phone and can buy a cheap normal mobilephone ^^

Rom for everyday use

It's been a while where ppl always compare the best desire rom out there... let's discuss what rom u guys recommended for everyday use... I'm currently using Oxygen rom, fast stable and hell lot of spaces, and since i'm starting to use 3G, i gonna switch to sense rom, needed sense widget and stuff, might get insertcoin rom... what about u guys?
I'm currently using InsertCoin Sense 2.1/3.0 1.1.4 and although it is great to look at, I perhaps wouldn't recommend it for everyday use as in the new version I have been experiencing some lag and unfortunately (and probably most importantly) it hasn't been too great with battery life.. although I haven't used SetCPU to try and improve it.
I would almost be tempted to go for a FROYO based ROM, but I think what you'll have to do is test a few and see how they perform for you.
I'm running InsertCoin 1.1.4 as well and I'm having a blast. It does lag every now and then, but my battery life's brilliant - I usually have about 30% left when I go to bed. I'm probably not the heaviest user on the planet, though.
I'm using SetCPU though, so that might be why. It's set to 499-1190 (smartassV2) with a Screen Off rule for 245-460. Seems to do the trick.

Use this one, yesterday coolexe did fabulous update.. EVERYTHING is working perfectly, including camera and flash.
It's Sense 3.0 ROM (not 2.1 + 3.0) and its just fast as 2.1, i was shocked when tried it for a first time.
TBH it's atm. best Sense 3 ROM in Desire section, and i tried all of them.
I'm using stock HBOOT InsertCoin 1.1.4, working well for me.

TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
I've been experimenting with ROMs for a few months now. Here is what I've found:
1) The most stable, light, low power ROM that I've used is MIUI. It has everything you need out of the box.
2) If you don't like the MIUI interface (read: like an iPhone and Android combined), the next best is Redux 1.2. Very low power, but very basic. It is basically a shell as I didn't like a lot of the stock components. I had to get a new launcher, dialer, contact manager and SMS app.
3) Sense-based ROMs feel nice until the battery dies... which happens way too quickly. The stock ROM was the most stable for me, I just wanted Gingerbread. All of the Sense-based ROMs that were non-stock seemed to buggy for me.
I'm a computer engineer, so I don't mind playing around with technology, but MIUI and the stock ROM were the only ones that I'd recommend to somebody less technical (or somebody that just wants the smartphone to work and not have to constantly look for fixes and / or ways to make the phone work the way it should out of the box) for daily use.
Yes I'm using that Rom too and can't fault it. It's fast for a sense 3 Rom.
Currently on MIUI 1.8.26.
Cant comment on the batt yet since i just flashed this yesterday but hell yeah, its fast.....

I have to say I disagree with almost all of that
It's based in cm7 so its one of the heaviest aosp Roms around.
To compare, miui xj, with my brutal stripping, I got down to 90MB bare bones. That's 30 MB bigger than dGB and 25MB bigger than redux in the same state.
Also imho, cm7 is heavier on battery, ergo so is miui. Redux is better power wise, although a miui custom kernel could help them there.
Out of interest what mA are you getting on 3g whilst idle?

First ROM ever ... Absolution?

I want to flash my first ROM ever and ive been trying to read a bit and decide on the most appropriate ROM for me. I want something fast and with a good battery life and from what Ive been reading Absolution seems to offer both these things really well. One thing I dont think im willing to give up right now however is the ability to sync facebook images and information onto my contacts. Do Absolution and other Cyanogen based ROMS allow us to do that? Any one with any other suggestions that you think may be easier for me to handle for a first ROM? Also, is there a way for me to backup my current stock rooted ROM so I go back to it in case I dont like CM?
If you want cyanogenmod based ROMs, for me blackICE ROM is the best by far.
If you want to stick to official releases for our DHD, Android Revolution or wait for LeeDroiD to update his ROM
If your want sense 3.5, in my opinion SmartDroiD is my ROM of choice,it really is the best ROM I've ever used, but there is ER3BUS ROM and RcMiX Runny. Currently I'm on ER3BUS as I wanted to test it and I've ended up loosing my USB cable so I'm stuck atm but I will be returning to SmartDroiD soon as I can.

Yea, when you first install a custom ROM after making your choice, obviously you will have clockwordmod recovery on the phone. From here you can do backups (referred to as nandroid backups) you can also initiate this from ROM manager.
Good luck intrepid Modder.
Also my recommendations are
Sense - Android Revolution HD. It's stock Sense look and feel with good battery life and amazing support, practically 24hour.
AOSP - CM7 - Again amazing support and a great experience. It can link your FB profile pics, but don't expect and decent resolution.
Bleeding Edge - LC ICS Beta 4.5 - Great if you want to try the new flavour of Android but really not for the new modder.
Thanks a lot for the help guys. Knowing that I can back up my stock rom is particularly comforting. Im hoping il have enough time this weekend to get around to doing this. By then Il make sure to look around for some videos of each of those ROMs in order to better choose my first
I feel that Absolution and Blackice are roughly on par with each other, and both are excellent. I'm very curious about Wilkyyy's reasoning...
If your only serious criteria are speed and battery life, the Oxygen 2.3.2 port can't be beaten IMHO. It has far fewer "options" than the former two ROMs though, and there is no CM7-style theming. If you use an alternate launcher like Go, though, then this isn't really an issue or even very relevant.

Everyone will tell you what they think is the best rom out there. It is all a matter of opinion and taste. I would suggest watching the threads and see which ones are up to date with features that are appealing to you and try them each out for a few days/hours/minutes etc until you settle into one that makes you happy. There are tons of quality roms and many that are inactive as far as development too. Just be sure to back up your go to or stock rom before experimenting.
i would say virtuous affinity-v1.48.0 its fast and dont use much battery
i think you can use mybackup pro to backup your stock rom
but i think you need to root it first
Don't think twice, perfect ROM for DHD is Android Revolution HD™ 6.3.1.

How's that, chief? You can use launcher themes to change the look of your phone interface, if you're really "into" that kind of thing. Yeah, sure, your settings menu won't change, but if you're gonna lose sleep over that, then your problems run much deeper in my opinion.
Another alternative for Oxygen is the kitchen, which has already been done by at least one user.

Android Revolution and Absolution are my two favorites... Can't go wrong with either and you get a mix of flavors, Sense (ARHD) and CM7 based (Absolution). I randomly switch between these two but Absolution has more development and updates happening than does ARHD.

Mildwild

Hello, i am currently running runnymede aio (still on 6.0.7 because im lazy)
My Rom History is pretty random, started on leedroid, then to cyanogen, then to leedroid hd, then to miui then to oxygen, then to runnymede haha.
Now finally i'm thinking about running mildwild, just want something thats stable, has plenty of battery life, but isnt boring!
Now my question here is...do i go for the cyanogen version or the oxygen version.
I would of thought the oxygen version?
but i can't see any differences, so i will ask does anyone know the main differences in features, battery life, ect.
Note: Yes i have read other threads about the comparison between them on here, but doesnt answer my questions!
Thanks...although while im at it people are welcome to sudgest new roms !?
Thanks
Although I wouldnt expect it, I hear the CM version is actually as good on battery as the Oxy version.
Other than the look, which remains constant, the backend is the same as what its based on. If you prefered CM to Oxy, go for that...
Yeah i had read that too, and found it strange.
My cm battery life was actually good when i had it, managed to stretch my desire out too two days.
I know you will be a bit bias but how would you rate your rom in comparison,
I would probs have to change my Hboot to get the most out of your rom wouldn't i because i am on cm7r2.
I think i would try the oxygen version, it seems to be so much more lightweight!

I couldn't compare as I have never flashed Mildwild to be honest
haha, should of guessed that,
Well i flashed the oxygen version...and all seems nice and speedy.
Im forgetting what features im missing out on from cyanogen...accept from manual brightness levels and themes...what else is there? haha!
Will have to take a look at dgb too, it seems promising!
(self confessed rom whore)

I am using mildwild CM V3.2 right now because i like the extra CM settings.
Despite the occasional app restarts of stock email and google reader, which seem to be a CM7.2 base problem, I am quite happy.

Bin using the oxy version for 3 months & very happy with it.
I was running cm7.1 I try mildwild 3.7 and love it. Is fast stable and I have alot more memory to download apps. I am using Regina launcher try it u will like it..
I switched back to CM7 when they pulled the FM radio support out of the latest Oxygen version. Also, Oxygen is missing functions, such as being able to write the SIM card telephone # info to the SD Card so the SMS messages have a functioning icon.
i'm on mildwild cm3.7, coming from cm 7.1 and i can say that the only things i miss are the homescreen rotation and the ability to select the no. of screens. though, a small price to pay for such a nice rom.

Might swap to the CM version, the oxygen version was great, but on 3.5 the battery life has dropped alot, gonna swap and compair features and whatnot!
got this annoying dying battery at 15 percent tho...probs a dead battery is on its way haha

i really liked the theme that mildwild provided, that's why i tried to stick with the "custom" rom (no launchers). but, yesterday, i took a bold step and installed ssLauncher. and man, it is the tits (like someone around here used to say)

mildwild
my current rom is mildwild 3.7,i cant wait to update them to 3.8 for some fixes...
I'm using oxygen mildwild, maybe i'll try the other one once...
oxygen mildwild is really smooth (even with go launcher) and good on battery.
CM is a bit slower from my little experience
I was using the oxigen 3.3 for two weeks and then I instaled the CM 3.7 (one week ago). Mildwild posted in the Oxigen thread that the CM version is better with the battery, but my preception is that the oxigen one was a little bit better.
upgrade to MildWild 3.8
Hello all,
since i saw this thread for mildwild i decided to post here istead of creating a new one.
i'm currently running mildwild 3.5, do i need to wipe the phone to install the new 3.8 version??
If it's just an update, how do i flash it as such?
thanks in advance.
If the dev does not say a full wipe is required / recommend, just flash newest build from recovery. But make a backup!
