UPDATE AS OF 3/11/2013
=====================================================================================
So with much time passed and with me using AOSP 4.2.2 ROM's now, I needed to provide an update to this thread.
Chrome was my previous favorite under ICS, but now sucks (for the purpose of the torture test thread anyways).
I don't know what happened, but for the last few weeks, Chrome has not been able to display the torture-test GIF's webpage smoothly. So I set about looking for a new Browser.
Here are the new results.
UNACCEPTABLE:
Opera Mini
Quick ICS Browser
Skyfire
Lighting Browser
UC Browser (must not be compatible with 4.2.2 yet)
STUDDERING MOTION AND FAR FROM FLAWLESS:
One Browser
Angel Browser
Baidu Browser
Niesky
Maxthon
Naked Browser
Dolphin
Dolphin mini
Boat
Boat Mini
VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE:
Opera Beta
Opera Mobile
Firefox
I then opened Opera Beta, Opera Mobile and Firefox all at the same time so I could check their performance against each other, while also being able to display the images while the phone was being heavily used.
Opera Beta *started* out with the fastest performance. With Firefox second and Opera Mobile a distant third.
But after a few minutes, Opera Beta stopped playing the gifs at all.
Opera Mobile was "okay" but starting to studder just a tad.
Firefox on the other hand was still sitting there blazing through the GIF's without any trouble at all!!!
So, unless Firefox ends up having a horrid GUI, it is now my new favorite go-to Browser!
Firefox download link:

Edit. I just discovered FireFox Beta. Looks like it's pretty darn good also.

This is my Android Browser "torture test". I click the link below and let all the gifs load up. I then do the same on my computer. Then I compare the results between the two. I watch to see how fast & smooth the gifs are when compared to how I see them on my fairly heavy duty home computer.
Oh yea, the link below is often NSFW!!!
edit. link removed due to not being SFW.
Though I made sure this particular page was PG13 at the worst.
Not a BS website. Actually a pretty cool one, if you're into Motorcycles.
And lots of funny GIF's on this page.
Anyways, tonight I tested a bunch of popular browsers. At least the ones that the Play store suggested as being most popular. And I'm really disappointed with how poorly the majority worked.
My phone:
AT&T Galaxy SIII
ROM - ARISTODEMOS AOSP Jelly Bean (I float around a lot)
Kernel - Ktoonsez Jelly Bean TW @ 2ghz Overclock
LTE @ ~18mbps & WiFi @ ~3mbps
And here are the browsers and "score" I gave each. Score is 1-4 on a scale of, uhh, 1-4 with 4 being "best".
VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE:
Chrome = 4
ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE:
UC Browser = 3
Opera = 3
UNACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE:
Boat = 1
Maxthon = 1
Stock Jelly Bean = 1
SkyFire = 1
Dolphin = 1
Your own results may vary. These are just MY results. But I thought I'd share them with others who like to look at gifs and don't have time to do their own testing.
I had similar results with a slimmed down testing I did a few months ago of Dolphin & Stock Browser vs. Chrome on AOKP. Chrome blew them away back then also.
Updated for browsers running on 4.2.2 AOSP ROM (LiquidSmooth RC2).
can't tell what you used to test the site since it's been removed, but reading this made me try the firefox beta and i'm actually very impressed. It handles flash pretty well also which is a bonus in my book.
nevermind

It was a webpage loaded up with about 50 individual animated GIF's. I had to remove the link because of a couple nSFW GIF's.
If you are over 18 and want to check it out, just PM me for the URL.
I found that I liked Opera Mobile for the best GUI. But the lack of full-page viewing killed it for me.

Hey guys,
Torch Mobile has another version of the Iris browser released. It loads pages up faster and feels more like a stable browser now.
I found that it renders pages while scrolling -alot- faster then the opera browser on Duttys 2.3 rom, has an incredibly proper scrolling feel, and a very... minimalistic UI. (basic windows mobile buttons, nothing special there.)
At this stage I would even say that the Iris browser beats Opera in rendering, the other departments are still lacking though (think features and UI.)
Get it at www.torchmobile.com
Fully supports WVGA.
I tried this browser (ver 1.1.4): fast and stable but no Flash Support.
Now ver 1.1.5 haven't Flash Support too...
D'rath
couldn't get flash working either, where the old versions did work. Not sure if thats down to the ROM I was using at the time though. However I thought this browser supported flash out of the box?
I have the same problem as well. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?
true - Iris is realy fast. no lag when scroling
Iris is faster than opera so I fully recommend Iris browser
Thanks for the info, I'm going to have to check this out!
Can someone up this freeware here to download? pls and thx^^
Hello all, I am a Desire HD user for a year.
I am using Opera 10.1 beta which is the smoothest browser i have ever used.
I installed many browsers via market and i found that most of them are really
choppy, not as smooth as iPhone's safari even flash is disabled.(Or this problem can not be solved due to the hardware?)
So, I wonder if there are any browsers that would be better than Opera?
Thanks.
The reason the iPhone browser feels smoother is that as soon as your finger touches the screen all page rendering & element loading stops, whereas on Android it continues, hence the "choppy" feeling.
You can read more here --> https://plus.google.com/100838276097451809262/posts/VDkV9XaJRGS
As for your actual question, I use CyanogenMod7 and the browser works normally, minor choppiness as per.
ive had many phones from windows mobile to android, and over the years the browser i continuously return to is opera mobile (which you cannot f***k with)
ive tried
dolphin
maxathon
stock
firefox
all the browsers suck bigtime compared to opera no matter what anyone says,
stick to opera mobile, it works well, its all in the rendering,
ive had alot of problems trying to log into certain sites with the above browsers, when i used opera no issues at all!
smooth browsers
I've tried loads of browsers for Android and I always come back to Opera, mini for speed or if u have slow internet and mobile for everyday browsing. Love it so much I'm using it for P.c aswell with the Opera link function keeps ur bookmarks synced over mobile and desktop. If u r on 10.1 beta I'd update if I were u there has probably been 8 or 9 updates since then a couple of them major ones. Current version is 11.5.3
I always use Opera too. I tried many as per this page.
For me Opera is superior because of its smoothness and pretty good speed.
If you are using ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) you could also try ICS Browser Plus from Beansoft, which is new.
From what I see, the stock browser (of Android 2.3 in HTC Desire HD) is pretty good -- it has decent speed, and it provides adequate "reflow" of text when you zoom a page.
Opera's speed is about the same, but the problem with Opera (at least the current version from Market) is that it always renders text formatted for "zoomed in" (as after double click) zoom level -- even if you zoom out, the columns width (in characters) remains the same, narrow. Which renders it less then usable IMHO . BTW, not sure why, I'm pretty sure I've see bundled versions of Opera on Windows Mobile, which rendered text with adequate reflow, I guess this is some marketing feature for them.
The rest of available browsers are just not very good from the performance standpoint. So with all the available choices, there is actually no good alternative to the stock one
Thank you guys, thanks for the information.
Hope that the stable ICS would release soon and bring our Desire HD to next level...

That question I am asking my self for a long time. I tried AOSP and leak Samsung JB rom's, they all come with stock browser, no chrome !
Maybe just tablets have stock chrome ?
elease early, release often. Today, we’re introducing Chrome Beta channel for phones and tablets on Android 4.0+. The Beta channel was launched in the early days of Chrome to test out new features and fix issues fast. Our newest Beta channel for phones and tablets now joins our Beta versions of Chrome for Mac, Windows, Linux and Chrome OS.
You can expect early access to new features (and bugs!), as well as a chance to provide feedback on what’s on the way. Just like our other Beta versions, the new features may be a little rough around the edges, but we’ll be pushing periodic updates so you can test out our latest work as soon as it’s ready. Even better, you can install the Beta alongside your current version of Chrome for Android.
Chrome for Android now benefits from all the speed, security and other improvements that have been landing on Chrome’s other platforms. For example, in today’s Beta update we have improved the Octane performance benchmark on average by 25-30%. In addition, this update includes interesting HTML5 features for developers such as CSS Filters. This is just one step of many towards bringing beautiful experiences to the mobile web.
Ready? Use it, abuse it, and tell us what you think. Our new Chrome Beta for Android is available now on Google Play (use the link, you won't find it in search)!

Difference is that Chrome Beta has newer features than Chrome on the Play Store.

... Personally I prefer the newest & latest stuff so I will be replacing Chrome with Chrome Beta on my N4. Posting for awareness.

Hopefully it will have more performance increases Google Blog said that you have to install it via the Play Store website otherwise you won't find it on the Play store. It probably does have increases as it does say it increases benchmarks.

Looking at the benchmarks sun spider performance seems the same as regular chrome
I will test on AOSP Browser now
AOSP Results :-
1578.1ms
These tests I'm doing are anything but scientific BTW.

I didn't clear the RAM either. I have weird results:
Chrome Stable: 1952.0 ms
Chrome Beta: 1333.0 ms
AOSP: 1557.5 ms
lol?

Doesn't hurt to try I'm sure that eventually, it will get to the stage of stability as the AOSP Browser.
Try using www.theverge.com, IMO ASOP is still smoother, I now this is beta, but seriously Google please do not release Chrome v25 and still be less smooth than stock browser.
I like all the features, and it's nice that has better benchmark scores, but it's still kinda laggy/stuttery while scrolling. Not buttery smooth like AOSP Browser or Dolphin Beta.

Well that's the whole point of Beta.
Chrome Stable (how it was before today)
Chrome Beta (how it is today)
I personally don't feel any lag on Chrome and feels as smooth as AOSP browser. I never felt any lag on Chrome, but I do like AOSP Browser simply because it's Holo themed.
Is it just me or have they changed the page formatting for the beta? One thing I've always like about Chrome on Android is that pages are rendered and formatted so that text is nice and legible by default without having to zoom in all the time.
With this beta, page rendering seems to mirror AOSP and other browsers now. The same web site doesn't display the same in stable and beta.
Attached screenshots to show what I mean
just tried and still as disappointing as ever. won't use until smoothness is at least as buttery as aosp browser
So far, Chrome beta works perfectly, no input lag, scrolls nice and fast and smooth. Stock ROM, rooted, Franco v30 kernel.

I just tried it using the desktop verge and it seems to be significantly smoother. But, use chrome only as my second browser. [AOSP browser smoothness + full screen + quick controls = WIN!!] .
So, have replaced the std. chrome with chrome beta for now. I hope they add support for full screen and gesture controls. [ the current swipe from edge to switch tabs is quite diff to do one handed]
Been using it since last night, seems faster but there are still little niggles to it. But it's labeled beta so I can't complain. Just give it time and it will be as fast as chrome on Linux.
EDIT: Sorry, bit of a derp there. I meant as fast as it is on Ubuntu etc. Android is Linux Lol.
A Nexus Connoisseur!! AOSPA!! Franco Kernel!!
Weird, the other day I was wondering why we don't have a Chrome Beta for Mobile devices.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Sweet! I'm not going to worry about the minute performance hiccups. It's nice to know I'm on the latest and greatest.
So i have a top of the line tablet with octacore, 3gb of ram and the latest KitKat 4.4.2, I don't use energy saving either. And no matter what browser I use the experience is never satisfactory.
Chrome is pretty good but it has 0 functionality. We use our fingers not a mouse! And still laggy in certain situations (same goes for Samsung stock browser).
UC browser HD is very good too in terms of scrolling, but when you're typing text is lagging behind and switching and creating tabs stutters horribly.
And Firefox, the mother of lag. When you scroll down a page really fast it takes the browser up to 5 seconds to render the damn page! While you are already looking at it. Try it out for yourself, you scroll then you only get a gray page, then everything plops in very blurry and then after another few seconds stuff gets rendered and is finally sharp.
I know that every browser has this issue to some extent. But most render much faster than firefox so it doesn't appear as an issue. Anyway can't android keep a Web page in memory completely? I have 3gb of it!
Or maybe I'm doing it wrong or you guys can suggest me a different browser with good usability and smoothness? Thx in advance
Unfortunately it's not smooth and it seems that it will never be. Only next browser seems to be little better from others.

Then maybe we just have different perceptions boat browser is not smooth at all on my tablet... Maybe I have to do a video or something because boat browser is one of the most laggy browsers I've tried :/ not as bad as firefox but pretty annoying.
nearly all browsers are laggy, there is so much ad crap loaded these days.
Once the page has loaded mine is smooth, so depends on you internet speed I guess.
My Ipad is the same.
Many ram doesn't mean will smooth. Because it use power of GPU and app can be use it and resoluiton.
Opera i see very smooth. Chrome and fire fox lag like hell.

We must... I've tried just about every browser on my P600.... Boat is about as fast as they come... ( I have recently started to use Habit a little more due to lower CPU use, and a few nice features).
Boat both Tablet and Phone versions have been used daily for 6months, it simply doesn't lag... I can pinch to zoom, pan, scroll all completely with ease and without any lag, stutter or hiccup. Even browsers like Opera were too slow for me, I could see the text blur for a second before becoming sharp when zooming, panning or scrolling quickly. I don't have any such issues with Boat. Others like Chrome and Firefox just aren't even close.
I have of course optimized my tablet in numerous ways (without root) such as developer option animations, and Nova launcher etc.
Feel free to try other browsers mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516754
If you are receiving lag on boat, you are doing something wrong or you have a problem with your tablet...
Thx for your lengthy post. I'd like to believe then, that I have different settings or something... I tried to make a video and compare boat browser and UC HD (which is smooth but has other issues).
I used n4g.com and Watson.ch both are big pages with lots of images. It's not that apparent in the video though because it's not 60fps (duh) but I think you can see the difference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMsG3DVLW_g
Oh well ..
On an IPAD , you cant really scroll completely like you can in Android ...
On Android the faster you move your finger the sooner it reaches the bottom of the page .. But on IPAD it only scrolls to an extent , hiding the fact that its still loading the rest of the webpage in the background . IOS is really good at hiding a lot of other things too and I actually like that and dont mind that since the experience is nice .. The only reason why I dont like IOS is because of a lack of a file browser , no usb pen drive connectivity , expandable storage , and itunes for doing anything and very little customization ..
The UI on an IPAD is really smooth and thats how its been ... plus ios talks in low level language ( Objective - C ) to the hardware directly where as Android has a middle man ( JAVA ) in between itself and the hardware
I have a surface pro .. and thats really really smooth for anything but its too heavy ..
So I have realized there is no happy place yet
Ideally I would wish there will be an os that has Flexibility of Android , Smoothness and optimization like IOS and Power of The Surface pro .. with Accurate Stylus support .... Oh well I can only dream .. but its funny that such technology still does not exist in 2014 .
No happy place :crying: wurde
We have some amazing browsers out there... It would just be nice if they were a bit smoother overall. And somehow it feels like it's simple a matter of better code and not hardware limitations... That's what's bugging me!

No problems... I can see the differences in your video, I'm not sure it's a huge difference but I can notice it.
Can you try the Mobile version of Boat instead of the Tablet version, for some reason I mainly stuck with the Phone version, although I have both loaded. I will try and also post a video at some stage of the varying browsers on mine to also show the difference, but it may take a few days...
Also UC browser (which has a reputation for being one of the fastest) seems to work fairly well on your video. What were/are your other issues, perhaps it's easier to address those issues than trying to get the other browsers working as fast for you.

Do you use developer options?
Boat browser was stuttering for me a lot also. Seeing this thread reminded me of the force GPU rendering option which I had checked.
I just unchecked it and it seems to be making a difference
Edit: Disregard that, doesn't make any difference.
Hmm. I like the stock browser in 4.4. It's a hell of a lot faster than 4.3 was. XDA and the WSJ are heavy sites; is this slow?

To me that does seem a tad bit on the slow side. Not so much the page loading but the repressiveness to pinch-to-zoom and finger scrolling seemed a bit laggy.

Screen painting is a bit slower than my N3 but that's to be expected considering the enormous difference in display area. Page loading (which is slower than screen painting) is exactly the same on both. So is navigating around a page once it's loaded. I guess I have low standards.

I don't have a Note 3 but I have a Nexus 5 and it's no where near that laggy. In fact I'm pretty sure my Note 10.1 2014 is smoother than that as well. But I'm rooted with a bunch of tweaks, custom ROM, and custom kernel.
Here my takes:
1) Boat browser - fastest and best features, support flash
2) dolphin browser - second place, similar features as Boat, support flash
3) Others that support flash.
Try http://finance.yahoo.com and see how fast and how the page display with your browser!!
