Wait for jelly bean? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have an evo 3d fully rooted. Im planning on getting the s3. Should I wait for the jelly bean ota or not? . I'll root the phone when i get it and there's always a custom rom before the official rollout but I'm wondering if there is a benefit in waiting..
Thanks

Can't think of any reason to wait. Stock ICS is already pretty good, it's by far the best implementation of Touchwiz yet.
I'm guessing we are days or weeks away from a leaked Sprint JB rom, and maybe a month or more from official OTA JB.

I think there is some value in rooting though. If you are looking to use the hotspot feature and do not have the package add-on currently then this is one reason. The JellyBomb Rom looks very attractive as a themed stock rom and I've read that this should still allow OTA when Sprint finally does release the Jelly Bean 4.1 update.

Wait if you're a purist. Root if you want instant gratification.

I went ahead and got the sg3 and rooted it.. Pretty easy.. But I'm getting a data error.. Error code 67..has to do with the prl. Talked to sprint and did all the things I could find on xda but it's still roaming.. Anyone have this issue? Btw it also happens on my daughters sg3 so im thinking its a local network issue.. Dont have a problem on the evo though

Try doing a ##SCRTN# (##72786#). This will reset all network settings and leave all your data intact. You will need your MSL. Assuming your rooted, download terminal emulator and type su, then type getprop ril.MSL **must be capital MSL. Also if that shows up as blank, then go to dialer and type ##3282# go to edit and for msl type anything in the msl box, and after it says invalid code retype getprop ril.MSL and it'll show.

Thanks but already did this.. Not sure what to do once im in. ##data.. I have the msl code i have totally reset... ##786 believe... I may go back to best buy and exchange phones but that means unrooting first

No Update

My wife and I have the same phone, both have cwm installed and rooted.. Today she got a upgrade to Android 4.1.1 and mine is still 4.0.4. I checkd mine and it say my phone is up to date. What is up with that... I checked after the update and her phone still has root..
Never mind. After clearing google service framework in app manager, it worked, downloading now.. BTW what is the big deal on this up date? As I haven't noticed much difference in looks anyway..
It upgrades the software from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean.

You really see no difference in ICS and jellybean?
Google search is different. Menu settings are different. Web browser is different. Off the top of my head. You can always go back to ics if you don't like it. No one would be offended.

JB runs alot smoother. ICS was a great upgrade from GB lol.. But JB overall is smooth, quicker, and above stated has changed. But run what you like to run. only opinion that truly matters is yours.
I'm running JB, but I thought there was a physical difference, like the OS looked a lot different. But it still looks like Ice to me..

When can I expect to get update
My wife and I just upgraded to the Galaxy S III last Friday when Sam's Club had them for 96 cents (we couldn't pass up the deal). I have gone about as far as I want to on setting up the phone before I get the update. As I ran a none standard Epic 4G I never received software updates from Sprint. My question is when can I expect to receive this update????
I need to root the S3 so that I can finish setting it up.
Thanks for the information.

Just root your phone and pick a stock JB rom from the forum. There are plenty out there. No need to wait for sprint to push the update to you.

actvation issues (baseband, etc)

hey incredibly smart people here,
i bought a d710 off craigslist to replace my ailing evo 4g. when i went to activate it, it didnt do hands free, so we attempted the manual program - when we ##72786# and entered the MSL given by sprint, i get a MODEM EXCEPTION OCCURS then a yes tap box. I also have baseband unknown and hardware unknown. i have tried the Gingerbread flash back to stock rom for people with issues, i have forwarded to the GA10 Stock JB rom, when i ## to program and enter the MSL it brings up the scrtn instead of the error, but there is nothing there, if i hit menu, doesnt do anything. im just frankly perplexed by it all. the hardware works great aside from activation. anyone have any other ideas before i sell it as a phone for metro or whatever, unflashable?
thanks guys!
Never buy phones from cl. Too many chances that your getting somebodys borked phone.
If you can't try it out before you buy it, don't buy it.
Nobody buys a car online and has it delivered by ups, no! You meet and road test the car before you buy it.
Get a refund if you can.
Good luck.

Use the EL29 one click and try everything from there.

Sounds like it was on aosp rom or something. Just use a oneclick full restore and you should be good to go. Fyi FL24 is latest ota from sprint. Its ics.

Long shot but I'm curious - Does the phone work, besides not being activated?
If it does, I'm wondering if you can't do a getprop ril.MSL with adb and seeing if the MSL is correct.
Seeing a lot of posts with the issue, but from CM builds, but no real fix. Unless I'm overlooking it.
Yes the phone works, had it On WiFi and everything works except getting it to activate bc of the no baseband . Can you send me a link to how to do the stuff you're talking about?

ok im home to work on the phone agian, i did a GB one-click before i left this morning. I just went into about settings and i got FC, so i cant even see the dec. im going to try the ics oneclick and see what that leaves me with.
ok i did the f24 flash, and it lets me get into the phone info, it says meid and msl as uknown. Ive attached the serial number to my samsung profile and it says it was built in november 2012. its just so perplexing.

OK, first things first then. Take that Dec MEID and check with Sprint to make sure they have the same one. As long as they do and you're okay to activate under that MEID you'll need to reprogram the phone to put that back in. PM me for the details on how to do that.
More than likely the person hosed their EFS data and thought it was borked - deciding to sell instead of fixing it.

ICS 4.0.4 Flashed to Verizon Prepaid; updating to JB bad idea??

I bought my phone already flashed to Verizon prepaid. It is currently on ICS 4.0.4 rooted stock build FH13. The guy who flashed it sold it to me and told me to never update it cuz it could destroy the flash. Is this true? Also, hot spot is working and i wouldn't want to lose that if i were to update. So should i just disable OTA update notifications with FOTAkill.apk and stay on 4.0.4?
When you update just change the APN for MMS. The flash should stay regardless of the ROM on the phone. Be sure to do a nandroid first. Also someone who has done a flash to another carrier can please chime in

DO NOT UPGRADE! If you're on PagePlus, the system WILL NOT RECOGNIZE YOUR PHONE. The place you bought it will charge you to re-flash it back to 4.0.4.
Just curious but how will flashing a new ROM in Odin or cwm make the system not recognize the phone? From what I can tell the "flash" was using the numbers from a donor phone. All the info used in the flash except the APN would all still be there after a new ROM flash. Can you not factory reset the phone after a flash to page plus as well? I would like to know what your info is. Because this is the first I have heard it.

Ok it looks like someone is saying it will be safe to update and someone else is saying that it is NOT safe to update. I cannot afford to lose the flash as I do not have access to a computer so I can't take the chance unless someone can absolutely positively for sure tell me that I will not lose my Verizon Prepaid flash.
If the Epic 4g Touch was made for Verizon I wouldnt be worried but being that its originally a Sprint phone I am having doubts. Isn't the OTA update designed for the Sprint Epic 4g Touch? If I do end up letting the OTA update install what version will I end up being on?

Well the update depends on which brand epic touch your on. (Sprint, Virgin Mobile, Boost) it will update you too jellybean either way just your modem will be different. I have a sprint brand.
Ya it is a pain to get MMS to work threw touchwiz without a 3rd party app of some sorts. I find it pretty easy on CM builds. I normally just ditch MMS and send the pic threw gmail cuz its less of a headache. But sure you can send me a screenshot of the settings. I'm willing to help as much as I can.

Yea id appreciate it if you could help me out tomorrow. Thanks again man. Btw, does you're phone go into airplane mode every now n then? Mine does for about ten seconds then comes back on. It'll happen like maybe five times a day. Was wondering if that's normal. If not, is it something cm10.1 could fix?
Its not normal. There was a bunch of bugs in the ROM you are on. Being on that build though because its rooted you can use mobile Odin. To get the modem you would need to flash that in cwm though.

Yup patroa is correct. ICS builds for the epic touch were horrible. (In My Opinion) I wish I could give you a 100% guarantee that nothing could go wrong but there is always a small slight chance.
No its not normal for airplane mode to pop on from time to time.
I rooted and used mobile Odin to install a cwm and flashed a cm10.1 build all without a volume down button (can't easily get into download mode or at all) I was able to do it from a ICS build. The same build you are on.

Just follow directions to the letter. Almost all if not all issues in flashing ROMs are from not following directions close enough. You are already rooted so get mobile Odin from play store or here on xda download el26 or el29 kernel from the kernel repository DL the tar file flash in mobile Odin boot into recovery make backup wipe and flash the ROM of your choosing. i dont think the ics dialer idea would work...you can keep trying different modems and see what happens or tell sprint that they suck and demand an airave..they will probaly charge you for it..
As for which phone to get...there is no way for me to answer that man...But i'll tell you this. When i get my next phone it will be the water/dust resistent S4..But i dont see a new phone helping the signal..
You could change you're prl to a roaming one..there are guides here and there online..But this only works for sprint not boost..If you're on sprint..a custom prl would be my move..

well..then before you go flashing a custom prl and having sprint freak if you use to much roaming data..lol
I would odin a one-click back to stock rooted ics...you might have something left over from rom flashes messing with you're signal. Make sure you back everything up on you're pc...because you need to use the wipe data one-click..i think its called ''no data''. I'll look to make sure.
edit..nope. Its full restore...not nodata..im a dummy..

Ya know I'm not trying to annoy you dude. But screw it I'll just use a different app for SMS for now. I'm just gonna save up for a new phone. And get a job at the sprint store right by my highschool lol. Employees get new phones for free.

Sorry..i seen you have signal now..ive been jumping around and helping others in about 3 different forums. If you're problem is just sms or mms. I would wipe the cache for the sms app in app manager. Then boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache.Reboot. If it is still wonky..try checking you're apn settings..if they are wrong.change them and reboot.
Should I just look online to see if they're wrong.

[Q] purchasing apps with carrier?

So I was able to purchase app through tmobile before I rooted and flashed a custom rom. But now when I try to attempt to purchase it tells me account can't be verified. Now I check my tmobile settings and nothing has changed. I even tried several roms but still no luck anyone else have this problem? Or know of a solution

I was the same way I got my phone on the 3rd day of july I too actually love TW and I rooted and flashed a customed rom Ive almost tried them all... not very many TW roms. But the ones that are there are really awesome.. I like Wicked V7, The Little Minions, GoldenEye they all have features that are sweet. If you like stock all three has TW, Golden Eye has the stock look and also has apps2sd.
