About Prepaid questions

Hello.
I will business trip on USA about monthly.
I have SGH-T989 and using T989D Telus rom (Because, 989D Telus rom is pure than t-mobile ROM) in my country korea.
So I've questions.
1) I paid "$50 unlimited data service"
This unlimited package include "unlimited talk"
"Unlimited talk" means only allow T-mobile to T-mobile ?
If I call T-mobile to ATT&T or Verizon, and I've no balance, what will occur?
(If another operator to call, and charge money, how much is it? (charge rate))
2) Mobile hotspot
If I use unlimited data plan, and using Smartphone Mobile HotSpot($15),
Can I use unlimited wifi tethering(mobile hotspot)?
3) Change plan in 1~2 days.
Yesterday I paid $50 unlimited plan, but I don't know If I exceed 500MB 4G speed, it will change to 2G speed.( I thought it will change 3G HSDPA)
So I will change plan to $70 unlimited plan on today, Is it possible?
Its just only additional charge $20 ?

I believe the unlimited talk is to any usa carrier.
2. Don't pay for mobile hotspot, it's free with a custom rom or work around. And yes it uses your data plan, so if you have unlimited.. You have unlimited hotspot.. But i don't remember tmobile having true unlimited data anymore... If they do it's very expensive.
3. 500? I thought the $50 plan is 100. But yes it changes to 2g. I don't think you can just add on $20 to change it. You can only change it with the full $70. So wait until next month.
Tips. There are other prepaid choices like simple mobile. I think there's some walmart plan too not sure

I heard that simple mobile provide only 2g service.
But I need 3G speed, becuase I will use notebook when file download.
So I prefer T-Mobile than Simple mobile.

you can ask the simplemobile users how the 3g speed is like for our phone, there is another ongoing thread. check that out.

there is nothing to stop you from using it.
- It is my part time job so i know this stuff...
I personally never used my t989 on simple mobile so i can't tell you the 3g speed of it, ask the others.
you can tether with any carrier you want as long as you have DATA access, and your phone will tether it for you. You can root your phone and freeze the apps that prevents you from tethering, use a 3rd party app, or run a custom rom.

I only know that remove tethering apk on at&t or tmobile phone.
Nor some custom roms organize tethering command on init.d or rc.d script.
If i get a simple mobile sim card, i will test about tethering and share information

[Q] Should I Go with AT&T GoPhone/Net10/Or Straight Talk??

I'm planning on buying the HTC One X International Version and I can't decide on which service provider to go with. I want to find the best provider with the best speeds and a decent "unlimited" data program. Any suggestions??

Definitely Straight Talk. Not unlimited data as advertised, more in the area of 2.5gb per month. People have claimed they've gone through a lot of data a month, but I would keep it reasonable when you're a new customer.
Only true unlimited mvno I can think of is
Boost Mobile, but not an option since they're cdma. Straight Talk has the best coverage and speeds.

I see that you are using Straight Talk how well does your service do with the phone? Good speeds?? Does straight talk connect with AT&Ts Faux(4)G network HSPA?? Sorry for all the questions just want to find the best deal, had verizon but got fed up with the 103/month bill.

Coverage is good, I live outside of major cities. Haven't done a speedtest, but load webpages, email, and other miscellaneous content fast. 3g, no 4g. I'm on WiFi 85% of the time, so this unlimited plan is great. Also to note, Straight Talk has me under AT&T since the coverage was better than T-Mobile in my area.
The T-Mobile prepaid $30 unlimited plan (5gb 4g data - throttled, 100 minutes, unlimited text) really got me interested until I later learned their bands still aren't upgraded for 850/1900 mhz. If you're fine with fast edge speed and mediocre coverage, than that might be of interest to you.

I just use my Verizon WiFi hotspot for data when not at home or work WiFi. Tmo for voice... Let's me use any intl gsm phone without worrying about bands.

Yeah T-Mobile coverage in my area sucks too. I live in a major city so speeds should be relatively good for me, I had ATT as a Go-Phone before and service coverage was awesome around here didn't ever drop a call but didn't have a data plan so can't speak on the speeds. Yeah, when I heard about T-mobile updating to the 890/1900 mhz band it made me think about going to them but I don't think I'd be able to deal with their edge network speeds.

have you checked on the recent at&t prepaid plan? it looks as though you still have to buy a data package on $50 unlimited with a smartphone. i'm on at&t prepaid: i picked the $2/day usage only option and bought a data package, but i've heard the data package portion will not be renewable. i have a mobile hotspot i could fall back on, so it may not be much of an issue for me. but it's something to think about.
i have a suspicion straight talk may be your best bet if you're a heavy user of talk/text as well as data. just check and make sure it runs off the att network where you live.

Yeah, I'm really confused with the new data plans, cause they have the new unlimited for $50 and it doesnt say anything against smart phones using it and now android are not allowed on the pay for what you use plans. As for straight talk here runs both AT&T and Tmobile they give they choice to us.

it does say smartphone users must purchase a data package. there a few people on the boards who say they have been able to fly under the radar and not have to do that with an unlimited plan. i only switched to att prepaid recently, so i wouldn't know for sure, but you should check around the boards to see what user experience is. in any case, my first fallback is my mobile hotspot, then i may eventually move to straight talk if att doesn't let me continue as is. i'm such a minimal user that i don't even want to pay $45/month if i don't have to.

Yeah, thats what I'll most like do is use WiFi most of the time, since straight talk is capped at around 2.5gb I a huge data user but I barely use talk, and text i have upwards of 5,000 a month xD

i wouldn't count on ATT GoPhone. they will probably start checking what phones are used and telling you to update your sim and plan. if you can afford it, 499/year at Straight Talk is the best plan i've seen. i'm waiting for college loans and switching.
Straight Talk may be capped/throttled after 2.5 GB like ATT does, but you are getting everything cheaper. i pay 70 AFTER a 7% discount for 450 mins, 2 GB, and no text/mms. i'm taking 42-45/month to Straight Talk when i get out of contract.

Yeah, thats most likely what I'll end up doing in the long after trying the service out first to see how it runs. Now if only the wireless companies could figure out that they are just hurting themselves by not offering unlimited data to customers xD

Go with ATT pay as you go, or goto a corporate not retail and have them activate a non contract line with 15 non smartphone data, which is the same BTW, and whatever messaging plan, one comes with unlimited any mobile and all this without showing your phone or call 18003310500 and they'll ship out a sim card. The imei is not a registered one with AT&T.

So $15 unlimited data? What are the speeds like? And they have unlimited messaging? What about minutes?

I was able to fly under the radar for my AT&T go prepaid for unlimited data for about 4 months and then one day data was shut off. I was able to put my sim in my V3xx and data works. I guess I can go to straight talk or tmobile now lol

wifi calling

anyone tried wifi calling on this? does it work decently and is it easy to use? would like to be able to go with 1000 minute package and save some dough if the wifi calling really works well and its easy enough for the wife to use when she talks to her mother all night.

.........it's the same Wi-Fi calling just as any other phone. .......Nothing new. .........

It works just like you are using the normal network including using the minutes on your plan. Its main claim to fame is to connect where there's no signal from a tower. It is NOT free minutes. Still the 1000 minute plan will go further than you think because evenings, weekends, and mobile to mobile calls don't count. If you work during the day and your family is on tmobile most calls will not count against your plan. I share 1000 minutes with my wife who talks a lot (evenings as she has a day job) and we never come close to using them all. Figuring week days only equals 20 days in 4 weeks and allows an average of 50 minutes a day of prime time talking. Who has time to talk that much during the work week? Not me.

Wifi calls only use up minutes on prepaid plans. You have unlimited wifi call minutes on plans that include a 2yr contract (Value or Classic plans).

Not true... it uses minutes regardless of whatever plans you have (I know, I'm on a 1000 minute Value Plan and I use wifi calling whenever I'm in my apartment). Also, I don't believe you can use wifi calling on prepaid plans? (correct me if I'm wrong).

I think it used to use minutes, the website clearly states it does not use your minutes.

Wifi-calling works well on note 2? I keep hearing its buggy? Phone not ringing while on standby, not able to answer and recipient can't hear you etc. :/

There is no additional monthly charge to use the Wi-Fi Calling feature on your handset. Wi-Fi Calling uses monthly plan minutes for the following:
Calls made from the US to US numbers
Calls made from the US to international numbers (subject to international rates)
Calls made from outside the US to US numbers (not charged roaming)
Calls made from outside the US to international numbers (subject to international rates, but not charged roaming)
Note: You must disable Data Roaming when traveling internationally to avoid incurring data roaming charges.
In short, it's "free" ie. it's a FEATURE that allows you to make phone calls over Wifi, but you're still limited to amount of minutes you have on your plan.

It works fine for me . No problems as far as I can tell.

I don't understand why they would charge you for your minutes on Internet calls. Isn't the whole point for when their data is unavailable? Are they contributing much architecture to that voip call?

girl in the store said the wifi calling doesn't use minutes. But regardless, my main concern is how tmobiles wifi calling works as far as voice quality and ease of use.

It get's routed through their systems not like VOIP.

For the 4 or 5 calls I've used it on so far it worked just fine. I couldn't tell it was any different than a normal network call. Use is seamless, by default the phone uses wifi networks when available. You don't have to do anything to activate or use it except connect to a wireless network, everything else is automatic and transparent to the user. You won't even know you are using it except for the icon that shows in the notification bar. Voice quality is the same as any other call on both ends of the conversation.

She may be mistaken with the addon which is free, but only works when you travel outside the US and use wifi calling.

"Free wifi calling" is a feature that must be explicitly added to your account. It doesn't cost extra, and when you have it, wifi calling does not use plan minutes. I don't know whether it's available for prepaid and value plans, but I have it on my classic plan and it saves me a lot of money. I just had to call and ask to have it added to my account.

Are you on a legacy classic plan? I remember it being that way a way back, but was later removed as an option. If you had a really low plan it was a $5 charge, but if you on their larger minute plans it was included.

i don't know if it was a special then but last week i was on t-mo's website and they had a banner ad for wi-fi calling and it stated it did not use minutes, which was a good selling point for me. i can't find it now of course....what the craps

Unlimited Wi-Fi minutes means that you can make any call you want over Wifi, but it doesn't actually mean that you get unlimited minutes... put it like this, it's just business jargon.
And that entire sentence is just marketing... if you're on wifi, of course you get "unlimited high speed data" and for the "interntionally free calls back to the USA" that makes sense because internet is location agnostic... you're simply connecting to T-Mobile servers and making calls, but from T-Mobile's side of things it's not free because they still have to connect you to the other person you're calling, and usually if you call land lines, the person who calls, pays.

I am currently in a 3G area and still getting great speeds. But I don't need to tether. Gonna have to look up the specifics, see if it's truly unlimited data, or cap'd at 4-5 gb.

Ditto, I want >5Mbps which in my limited neighborhood tests T-Mobile more consistently delivered than all other major carriers both indoors & outdoors to my surprise..(though Verizon did peak higher outdoors)

I wish they had a plan for cheaper with 2GB of data, since I rarely use over 2GB... actually I don't think i ever have...

And it looks like it's $35 for unlimited call, text and web (2G speeds) since for $45 they have unlimited call, text, and high-speed web and it says 3G speeds right under the $45 plan, which means the "web" for the $35 plan will prob be 2G speeds.
I'd go with simple mobile, for $50, you get unlimited voice, text and 4G data (I don't believe there's a cap, but don't quote me on that).

Exactly. I use GrooveIP just because it's so easy to set up. No problems. $30 plan is basically unlimited.

Just google voice itself won't help. Google Voice is a service that will let you connect all your numbers to a central number, then depending on who calls, what time, etc. It will redirect the call to the appropriate number, but that requires you to have a number elsewhere (phone service elsewhere). Now if you combine Google Voice with some VoIP services, which let you make calls over a data connection (hence the IP part), then you essentially never have to or need to make traditional phone calls using minutes, etc.
Cons:
- data always on - more battery used
- set up - no matter how minimal or easy, my phone already has a built in dialer that works
- need to give out Google Voice # or pay $20 and end contract to port existing number to GV
Pros:
- no minutes used
- works anywhere with data connection (even abroad, but so does T-Mobile's Wifi Calling)

[Q] Wireless Hotspot?

Here is the scenario:
There are around 10 of us in my office who have beefed up data plans because we stream all day ER DAY. Instead of us paying $30 each every month, we (actually me) came up with an idea to buy a hotspot for the office, and then split the cost 10 ways. after doing a lot of reasearch as far as prices and data caps and speeds I have come up with the following ideas:
1. Sprint phone with bad ESN flashed to Metro PCS ($60, no 4g LTE)
2. Add an existing T-Mobile line ($60, 10GB soft cap)
3. ???
Assume the device we will be using is a rooted, unlocked Samsung S3. Does anyone have any better ideas? We live in OC California, its 70 degrees outside if that helps.

I have T-Mobile's 10GB top-tier data plan and I am already 7.7GB and I am only halfway through the month. I am looking for an uncapped data plan only, no voice or mms.
It really sucks when you are the person who knows the most about phones in your life, there is no one to ask for help =(

ummm T-mobile has an uncapped data plan... it's called unlimited everything and costs 89.99/mo with contract and i think $70 without...

Why don't u by a tmobile hotspot in stead of getting a phone and tethering??

Hotspot is not unlimited and that's what the OP wants.
OP, in my humble opinion; add a tmobile line for the said GS3 and get the unlimited data plan. There are many ROMs for that phone that support tethering, even thought the plan does not.
