bogfather, thanks for the info. I was also searching for this kind of info, as my HOX is rooted and has a custom ROM in it (RENOVATE 3), which works like a charm.
I wanted to have as a backup solution option to return to stock eventually. Read so many threads on XDA, but still not entirely sure about the process (total n o o b).
cidgetter in the top of the screen says: [CID is: ]: [VODAP102]. I guess it was Vodaphone branded phone, so somebody rooted it to get rid of the Vodaphone stuff.
Question - if I want to get back to stock, do I have to use Vodaphone ROM, or I can use any stock ROM?
Cheers!
I saw his other post. He is on custom rom and doesn't have an original backup of stock rom, neither does he know the original rom version.
EDIT CIDGetter doesn't return anything on my cm10 rom. Use "fastboot oem readcid" from your PC while the phone is in fastboot USB mode.
EDIT2: @bogfather I seem to be dropping in uninvited. I hope you dont mind.

Are you referring to Toto, or me, 'cause you exactly described my case - custom ROM, without original backup of stock ROM, not knowing the original ROM version.
What are the options in case I decide to revert to some (not Vodaphone) stock ROM?

I was referring to toto. AFAIK (and someone correct me if I am wrong), you have to return to VODA102 if you decide to go back to stock. RUU's read info from the bootloader, such as hboot version, cid etc. and do some checks before they proceed with installation. Unless you disable those checks in the RUU script itself, other RUUs will probably not flash.
Your other options would be installing ARHD, or maXimus ROM since they are the closest to stock there is. There is also a deodexed stock rom by showp under android dev section.
I see.
Thanks for the explanation, mate!

NP. One more thing before you attempt to flash an RUU: You have to install a stock recovery first.

It will work if the ruu you have is the same software version or higher than what you was on before you flashed the jb rom.

I'm in the same position... My HOX TIM IT branded has a 1.29.901.11 RUU (I think... I saw this under Software information) but I can't find it anywhere! The question is the following: If I will flash a custom ROM, like viperX, that has a higher RUU then mine, when I need to go stock, for example for the warranty, I need the stock RUU with the stock ROM, or just the stock ROM with any RUU?

The 1.29.901.11 is your software version, a ruu is the full stock Rom as if HTC were loading your phone for the first time.
Flashing a custom Rom doesn't change what ruu you will need to revert to stock, just look for a ruu with the same or higher version than what your stock software version is. Unless you have a s-off one x you will need a ruu with 901 in it (that's your cid).

But is there another way to be sure that I can revert my HOX to its stock status? For example, if I flash the viperX rom, that has 2.17.401.2, will I be able to re-flash my stock ROM, previously backuped, with that RUU?

i cant find that ruu either, if you ask in this thread someone might be able to find it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543604
if you do a nandroid backup after flashing a custom recovery (but before rooting) you could always revert to that to get back to stock rom, but then you would need to find the stock recovery as well to help claim on warranty.
it doesn't matter what software version the custom rom is, you say your on 1.29.901.11 now so thats the only version that matters. you can downgrade from a custom rom as long as your not trying to downgrade lower than what your stock software is now

Atm, I can't post in that section, later I'll do it!
So, for having a backup of my actual ROM, I need to flash a custom recovery BEFORE doing the root hack, right? The process will be "Unlock Bootloader -> Flash a custom recovery -> Nandroid Backup -> Root -> Flash a custom ROM", right?
For the downgrade to the stock firm, I'll need the stock recovery and the stock ROM, that I previously backuped?

thats right, but you only have to root if your sticking on stock rom but want root access, if you flash a custom rom they come pre-rooted.
so it will be
1 unlock bootloader
2 flash custom recovery
3 nandroid back up
4 flash custom rom (but remember to flash the boot.img from the rom in fastboot first)

Ok, now this part is ok for me! But the only wall between me and the custom ROM is that RUU... The only thing that I haven't understood yet, is the utility of this RUU... Can I revert to stock WITHOUT this RUU, but only with my stock ROM+stock recovery? Help me to figure out the function of this RUU, please...

Hey, haven't come across a post like this, been searching and I don't seem to have found one, sorry If anyone.does.
Right, so I'm thinking of flashing a custom rom on my HTC one x, however I need some questions answering before I even go ahead and try it.
If I flash a custom Rom, is there any chance of getting my phone fully back to stock except the bootloader relocked message?
Should I worry about radio numbers? What do they mean? Do they matter if so how and why?
What do the boot.img and system.img do and why might I need to flash them via adb?
Firmware? What is firmware and why do I need to be specific about it?
What is the likelihood of me bricking my phone?
Do I need to stay on my cid? (X
X.xx.771.x) if.so why?
What happens/do I do if ot stays on Yeh HTC screen after flash?
Can the kernel be changed back to stock?
Is it true I can't flash through cwm if I want a kernel flashing?
Sorry for all the questions it's just I broke my HTC sensation xe with roms, and obviously don't want to do the same here!
Please someone answer.
Thanks a lot

If I flash a custom Rom, is there any chance of getting my phone fully back to stock except the bootloader relocked message?
yes there is, just find the correct matching ruu for your phone. the link to download should be one of the top ones in android development.
Should I worry about radio numbers? What do they mean? Do they matter if so how and why?
no you shouldnt. they just mean that it is an updated version of the radio. for me, the 1.29 radios work better than the leaked 2.05 radios. you can always test each one out to find the best for your phone.
What do the boot.img and system.img do and why might I need to flash them via adb?
because we dont have security-off yet, we cannot use cwm to flash the boot of the new roms directly, we have to use flash if through fastboot. imagine our phone as a car, and everytime u change the engine{ rom }, you need to give it a jump start.
Firmware? What is firmware and why do I need to be specific about it?
you dont need to be specific. if you are flashing, all roms would work for you, and there are two type, one based on the leak 2.0 build, and others using the 1.29 as their base
What is the likelihood of me bricking my phone?
if u follow instructions clearly, 0.
Do I need to stay on my cid? (X
X.xx.771.x) if.so why?
roming shouldnt change your cid. as a beginner..we shouldnt really even worry about that.
What happens/do I do if ot stays on Yeh HTC screen after flash?
if it stays there, it means you forgot to flash the boot.img, just go into fastboot, and flash the matching boot.img
Can the kernel be changed back to stock?
yes it can, just flash the stock kernel like u would any other kernel
Is it true I can't flash through cwm if I want a kernel flashing?
most custom kernels require modules, which is an add on package sort of. you first flash the boot of the kernel through fastboot, then boot into recovery and flash the modules. so u still need cwm.

Thank you, really grateful for your time in answering my questions, just wondering is everything I do to roms and kernels undoable? Just worrying that's all.
Can radios be downgraded easily?
Can software versions be downgraded easily? If I were to update to 1.29 (not released for me ota yet) is it possible to go back if ever I wanted? Sorry its just a lot to learn.

if u mean stock phone ota to 1.29, no u would not be able to go back. at least not until we get soff
but if say u root ur phone on 1.28 and flash any 1.29 roms or 2.05 roms, u can always go back to stock 1.28 by flashing ruu.
IF WE GET SOFF, u can flash ANYTHING, downgrade ANYTHING. and we dont have to flash boot.img everytime
that is why everyone is waiting for soff

I have one more question which i think you may have answered but i just need to make it more obvious to what i mean.
I'm currently on 1.28.771.9, rooted etc...
If i were to update to a 1.29 rom, is there anyway to get back to my current rom i'm on now?
Would that call for a nandroid restore?
Or? And these ruu's everytime in the past, i've tried to flash 'downgrade' sort of thing, it's failed? i think?

NO, IF U OTA UPDATE, you will not be able to revert back.
right now, using ruus to downgrade is not possible, but if we get soff, then u will be able to downgrade to 1.28 by flashing that ruu

if you are going to flash custom roms the first and important thing to do is backup your stock rom..and always keep that..that way when you get an OTA update all you do is revert back to that stick a stock recovery and install the update..simple as that really.

Do nandroid back ups ALWAYS work? No matter what? No matter what rom i've came from, it will go back to EXACTLY how my phone was before i flashed a custom rom?
Also, i thought that you couldn't flash radios because you need s-off to do so?
Also, say i was to flash a custom rom... for example the newest miui one? (http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommana...ger.js&name=MIUI.us&deviceName=HTC One X (GSM))
What does this change? Obviously my rom, but would it change my software version (1.28?) and say i flashed the MIUI rom, and for whatever reason i wanted to go back to the official stock rom (1.28?)... is that possible? Nandroid restore? Or RUU?
Basically what i'm trying to understand is what i actually change when i flash a rom? And what can be successfully undone?
Really sorry, i'm a newbie and i sound thick but everyone starts somewhere right?
Do i need to boot into recovery via fastboot to successfully flash kernels to? (I read online...)
can kernels be undone and are they stored in boot.img
Thanks for you help guys, i'm REALLY, REALLY grateful.
Thanks again.
Please stay on topic guys. This isn't a flirt forum.
Keep that stuff private please

Hi.
I have a One X that I have rooted and I am testing ICS rom's, but none give me what I want.
I want to try the JB rom's, and my phone support this.
But if I upgrade to hboot 1.23 will I be able to go back to stock JB and lock the bootloader when the JB RUU is released? This for selling the phone with stock software.

You might not be able to flash it directly(version check, im guessing) but you can still flash its contents, and yes you can always RELOCK your bootloader.

Probably have to extract the rom.zip from the ruu, but I cant see why the ruu wouldn't just flash considering the hboot inside the ruu is just gonna be the same as the one you've flashed... But I could be wrong, I never use ruus anyway.

Hi, I have noticed that HTC_044 is receiving OTA updates to jellybean now, my CID is 044, Hboot version 0.96 and currently running AHD 9.7 custom rom. So how can I upgrade my phone to jellybean?
I have searched through some threads but still confuse with feasibility and step by step guide. The question is can I flash the first original ROM nandroid backup and use the software update from setting? I have to relock the bootloader and reflash original recovery? How do I know which recovery to use as there is 1.26, 1.28, 1.29? Or can I just download the OTA zip and flash it directly on AHD 9.7 custom rom? Or should I just wait developer to upgrade their ROM compatibility?
Thanks in advance
Err... That's a lot of questions.
If you restore your backup and boot.img and flash the stock recovery (I'm not sure which one hboot 0.96 corresponds to, but after booting the ROM you'll know), you should be able to.apply several OTAs to get to JB.
I assume your backup is old, so you will want Titanium backup or something.
An alternative is to relock your bootloader
fastboot oem lock
download 2.17.707.x RUU from htcruu.com (ENDEAVORU) which will wipe your phone. Then apply one OTA and unlock or whatever you want.
Thanks a lot for your patience in answering my loads of questions! I guess flashing RUU is the way to go right?
Or alternatively can I just flash Maximus 8.5 by following the steps provided and use the firmware update as provided in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957376?
BTW, will there be any difference if I use Maximus update instead of RUU, because I heard people are receiving battery update from OTA?

I just did a very manual method.

Fingers crossed!

you can extract the recovery from the original RUU, go to football's http://www.filefactory.com/f/7cc7b2fbdd03c031/ or http://www.htcruu.com/?dir=Endeavor (though often the RUU is corrupted), follow steps in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30574349&postcount=859, then you are good to go You can find your RUU version via software version from your stock rom

Bootloader unlocked HTC One X OTA JB update
I've just unlocked my HTC One X and installed 'mike1986' ICS custom ROM but before I did that I saved my carrier's (3UK) JB update to my laptop's C:drive. Would it be possible to flash the 3UK JB update now and if so will it contain 3UK's bloatware?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope won't work. You need to go back to your original 3UK stock rom and the stock recovery to be able to update.

Does anyone know if Team Venom's ViperX 3.7.2 - Sense 4+ Jelly Bean custom ROM will flash on HTC One X CID H3G_001?
I've already flashed Viper X 2.7.0
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am really sorry to post such a simple and maybe common question, I just CANNOT find a straight answer.
I have a HTC ONE X 32GB (WW version) I got from China.
I checked the version of the Ruu and it says 1.29.708.9 (HK Ruu)
And the bootloader was unlocked, so i locked it.
I want to return to Stock Ruu cause I cannot update the official version.
I have 2 questions:
1. I am from Israel, so when I return to stock RUU, should i install the HK version like the one that WAS on my phone, or a different one??
-Can I install a different Ruu or it will screw my phone?
2. If i update to the HK Ruu which was originally on my phone, will i get a specific update dedicated to the Ruu or a general one from HTC?, I just want it to be "worldwide" and not really blocked to any updates.
Thanks, sorry for the mess.
Hey there... well as a matter of fact any other RUU will NOT work. You have to get the appropriate RUU for your phone depending on where it is from...
This will NOT block any updates, it's just for languages and local stuff specific for that region, but technically it won't be any different from any other One X.
Also there is no international RUU... every phone MUST have a specific region yours is China and that doesn't make it any different or change anything whatsoever.
Edit : Here is the link to the HK Jellybean RUU http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/sec...Radio_5.1204.162.29_release_299865_signed.exe
Follow the steps on the RUU help threads if you're new to this... This RUU will give you the latest major update. Any other official updates should roll out to you as long as you have the official recovery. If you want the WWE you can get a custom ROM that has it but I doubt that you can get it officially. Good luck with this
I hope I helped
Hi, if you are in ICS, go to stock .
Means you need to restore a stock nandroid back up and its boot img . Then flash stock recovery, and last re lock bootloader. Why? To get official ota manually.

I'm not quite sure what is the Rom i am currently using, it looks like a stock rom that China folks changed to fit in their stupid little programs.
Why do I need to do all that stuff you said?, can't i just install the stock rom like Waseem said?
If your hox is jellybean , yes, there some roms stock look, also i can make you one with no modifications or tweaks...but....if your firmware is ICS, you need to update, and for that i recommend you to update via ota.
Whatever you need or want,i can help you

Hey I appreciate it, but I simply want to make my HOX fresh and clean from bull that was installed by Chinese folks and get a stock rom that updates by itself.
I downloaded Waseems RUU which he said was the latest for my version of HOX.
I already made my bootloader "Relocked" because it said to do so on some guide.
Now, Do i need to flash stock recovery? or just install the RUU?
Sorry i'm a bid confused.
This is my machine:
Android 4.0.3
Software #: 1.29.708.9
HTC SDK API LEVEL: HTCExtension_403_1_GA_7
Please give me some quick advise, this shouldn't be too hard, but it messes with my head.
Also, do I need to make some sort of cleaning to my phone before installing the RUU?, or the RUU installations does it by itself?
You need ICS latest ruu for our firmware. Cant install JB over ICS.
SkyDragon© You Are Not Allow To Lick My Banner, Stay Away!
What is JB?
I have the latest RUU which Waseem posted earlier. But do I need to install dtock recovery for it? Or somehow clean my device before installing the RUU?

What he means is that you can NOT install a 3.14 based ruu, you need to install a 1.29 or a 2.17 ruu. The hboot difference is to big !
Edit :
Download this one
http://bugsylawson.com/index.php/fi...89-radio-1120410414-release-259897-signedexe/
Relock the bootloader if its unlocked and execute the ruu with admin rights. This will bring the phone to full factory stock. Note that it will wipe EVERYTHING !
After the ruu you reboot and do all the official ota's you can get....
Holy cow.. now I get it. The Ruu Waseen gave me is jellybean (jb) .
Ok cool thanks.
But still. How do I determine if i need to install stock recovery before installing ICS stock ruu?
Because I accidently Relocked the hboot before flashing the stock recovery.
Also, all links to stock ruus are broken, wherecan I download ICS stock Ruu?
I seriously appreciate your help guys

You only need to install the 1.29 ruu with admin rights and a relocked bootloader. It will flash it all back. Then do official ota to the 2.17 software....etc etc....until you cant go higher anymore. Latest software should be at least 3.14 ...

Hey sorry I thought you had the JB Hboot... here is the 1.29 RUU for HK http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/sec...Radio_2.1204.122.17_release_268338_signed.exe
flash it and it should restore the stock ICS software to your HOX. then go to Settings > About > Software updates and you should then get the official JB update which will update your Hboot, Radio and ROM to the JB base 3.x
I forgot if you have to flash the stock recovey and re-lock before flashing stock RUU but I don't think you do. I guess if you flash the RUU it should relock your phone and flash stock recovery and boot.img by itself But please to be safe just make sure this is true.
A ruu does not lock the bootloader, you have to do that yourself. The only thing a ruu does is flash back the stock recovery, boot.img and software.
You relock the bootloader in fastboot mode
Fastboot oem lock
Keep the phone in the bootloader and right click on the ruu and select
Run as administrator
Edit....the first ota you will get is the ics 2.17 software, then you will get a small update and after that you get the 3.14 jellybean update. You do not get the jellybean instantly.....

I did everything you said, now i have a different problem
I cannot open the RUU file you told me to download (the installer).
I had that problem on my other PC and then downloaded JAVA and it worked.
On this laptop I downloaded java, and it still doesn't load the installer.
It opens a COMMAND windows, and closes it. nothing happens.
I run it as admin and verything.
I am using Windows 7 32bit :\
Any idea?
Uninstall HTC syncmanager, but leave the drivers If you have HTC syncmanager installed anyway ?

Yes i have it installed.
OK now something weird happened, I tried to open the RUU installer that Waseem gave me (the second one, for the 1.29 ICS) and it opened it!
But it doesn't open the file you gave me, which is 300MB
and waseems is the same name but 550MB.
what is the difference???/?
Edit :
Just checked the one i linked, you had a broken download. The one i linked is around 580 mb !
Look i made a screenshot
Hello I just bought htc one m8 I want to root bad but I just want to make sure is their a way to go back to stock with s off yet?
No RUU is available yet. There are stock kernel files and you can make a backup in recovery of stock rom. But, if you convert to Google play edition there's no way to get back right now.

Correct, but only for now. Just waiting for the RUU to be released.
If you unlock with HTC Dev, the bootloader says unlocked or relocked (if you relock it).
To get locked again you need S-OFF.
However, I've seen S-OFF is (almost?) achieved, but no tutorial about restoring the lock flag.
There is some misinformation going on in here. You can flash a GPe ROM, and still be able to flash back to sense. However, if you flash the GPe RUU, then you are stuck until we get a sense RUU. Also, s-off has already been achieved, check the original development thread.

You can install a GPE Rom and then flash back to a Sense Rom no problem. What I was saying is if you do the full GPE conversion by flashing the GPE RUU, there's no way to get back to Sense until an RUU is available.

I know we can S-OFF, but after that, how do we set the device back to Locked instead of Unlocked or Relocked?
IF you have an unbranded EU handset there is a way to get back to 100% stock with a bit of imagination...
1. Flash the stock odexed 1.54.401.5 ROM @mike1986. provided HERE
2. Flash the stock 1.54.401.5 recovery provided HERE
3. Relock the bootloader (or, if S-OFF, reset the tampered flag and lock it again)
You could also look into flashing the 1.54.401.5 firmware package to be ultra-sure you have everything done but if you were already on 1.54.401.5 before going custom it's not really required
That should do it...
confused a bit?
Dont want sound like a newbie but so if I unlock the bootloader and turn s off then its rooted and I can flash any recovery I just want to clear things real quick if I want to restore it like from the day I got it its possible if I follow your directions? I got the atnt version to I know I sound like super newbie but Its just a little more complicated to do this on htc one then it was when I had the s4 no doubt tho htc one m8 is amazing!!!

But.. how?
I mean, I know how to relock (there's an HTC official method), but if i'm S-OFF, how can i lock?
There's a thread on removing tampered and showing locked in android Dev section. I believe it just flashes a modified hboot file. Then you just need to s-on:
Fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Then lock your bootloader which you know how to do.
There have been issues with running an RUU after messing with your bootloader while S-on with HTC Phones in the past so to minimize possible bricking be sure to see your CID back to its original if you changed it and possibly even leaving the phone S-Off if you plan to continue using it after returning to stock.

No, you can lock it first as doing the normal will show 'relocked'. When S-OFF, you can set it back to 'locked' and then S-ON again (if you really want to). Guides are in General on how to do this
