Hey, haven't come across a post like this, been searching and I don't seem to have found one, sorry If anyone.does.
Right, so I'm thinking of flashing a custom rom on my HTC one x, however I need some questions answering before I even go ahead and try it.
If I flash a custom Rom, is there any chance of getting my phone fully back to stock except the bootloader relocked message?
Should I worry about radio numbers? What do they mean? Do they matter if so how and why?
What do the boot.img and system.img do and why might I need to flash them via adb?
Firmware? What is firmware and why do I need to be specific about it?
What is the likelihood of me bricking my phone?
Do I need to stay on my cid? (X
X.xx.771.x) if.so why?
What happens/do I do if ot stays on Yeh HTC screen after flash?
Can the kernel be changed back to stock?
Is it true I can't flash through cwm if I want a kernel flashing?

yes there is, just find the correct matching ruu for your phone. the link to download should be one of the top ones in android development.

no you shouldnt. they just mean that it is an updated version of the radio. for me, the 1.29 radios work better than the leaked 2.05 radios. you can always test each one out to find the best for your phone.

because we dont have security-off yet, we cannot use cwm to flash the boot of the new roms directly, we have to use flash if through fastboot. imagine our phone as a car, and everytime u change the engine{ rom }, you need to give it a jump start.

you dont need to be specific. if you are flashing, all roms would work for you, and there are two type, one based on the leak 2.0 build, and others using the 1.29 as their base

If i were to update to a 1.29 rom, is there anyway to get back to my current rom i'm on now?
Would that call for a nandroid restore?
Or? And these ruu's everytime in the past, i've tried to flash 'downgrade' sort of thing, it's failed? i think?

NO, IF U OTA UPDATE, you will not be able to revert back.
right now, using ruus to downgrade is not possible, but if we get soff, then u will be able to downgrade to 1.28 by flashing that ruu

if you are going to flash custom roms the first and important thing to do is backup your stock rom..and always keep that..that way when you get an OTA update all you do is revert back to that stick a stock recovery and install the update..simple as that really.

Do nandroid back ups ALWAYS work? No matter what? No matter what rom i've came from, it will go back to EXACTLY how my phone was before i flashed a custom rom?
Also, i thought that you couldn't flash radios because you need s-off to do so?

What does this change? Obviously my rom, but would it change my software version (1.28?) and say i flashed the MIUI rom, and for whatever reason i wanted to go back to the official stock rom (1.28?)... is that possible? Nandroid restore? Or RUU?

bogfather, thanks for the info. I was also searching for this kind of info, as my HOX is rooted and has a custom ROM in it (RENOVATE 3), which works like a charm.
I wanted to have as a backup solution option to return to stock eventually. Read so many threads on XDA, but still not entirely sure about the process (total n o o b).
cidgetter in the top of the screen says: [CID is: ]: [VODAP102]. I guess it was Vodaphone branded phone, so somebody rooted it to get rid of the Vodaphone stuff.
Question - if I want to get back to stock, do I have to use Vodaphone ROM, or I can use any stock ROM?

EDIT CIDGetter doesn't return anything on my cm10 rom. Use "fastboot oem readcid" from your PC while the phone is in fastboot USB mode.

Are you referring to Toto, or me, 'cause you exactly described my case - custom ROM, without original backup of stock ROM, not knowing the original ROM version.

I was referring to toto. AFAIK (and someone correct me if I am wrong), you have to return to VODA102 if you decide to go back to stock. RUU's read info from the bootloader, such as hboot version, cid etc. and do some checks before they proceed with installation. Unless you disable those checks in the RUU script itself, other RUUs will probably not flash.
Your other options would be installing ARHD, or maXimus ROM since they are the closest to stock there is. There is also a deodexed stock rom by showp under android dev section.

NP. One more thing before you attempt to flash an RUU: You have to install a stock recovery first.

It will work if the ruu you have is the same software version or higher than what you was on before you flashed the jb rom.

I'm in the same position... My HOX TIM IT branded has a 1.29.901.11 RUU (I think... I saw this under Software information) but I can't find it anywhere! The question is the following: If I will flash a custom ROM, like viperX, that has a higher RUU then mine, when I need to go stock, for example for the warranty, I need the stock RUU with the stock ROM, or just the stock ROM with any RUU?

The 1.29.901.11 is your software version, a ruu is the full stock Rom as if HTC were loading your phone for the first time.
Flashing a custom Rom doesn't change what ruu you will need to revert to stock, just look for a ruu with the same or higher version than what your stock software version is. Unless you have a s-off one x you will need a ruu with 901 in it (that's your cid).

So, for having a backup of my actual ROM, I need to flash a custom recovery BEFORE doing the root hack, right? The process will be "Unlock Bootloader -> Flash a custom recovery -> Nandroid Backup -> Root -> Flash a custom ROM", right?
For the downgrade to the stock firm, I'll need the stock recovery and the stock ROM, that I previously backuped?

thats right, but you only have to root if your sticking on stock rom but want root access, if you flash a custom rom they come pre-rooted.
so it will be
1 unlock bootloader
2 flash custom recovery
3 nandroid back up
4 flash custom rom (but remember to flash the boot.img from the rom in fastboot first)

Ok, now this part is ok for me! But the only wall between me and the custom ROM is that RUU... The only thing that I haven't understood yet, is the utility of this RUU... Can I revert to stock WITHOUT this RUU, but only with my stock ROM+stock recovery? Help me to figure out the function of this RUU, please...

I have just a small question. I want to root my HTC One X and a few months ago when I was checking XDA it was needed unlock bootloader via HTC Dev. My question is if it is still necessary to unlock phone via HTCDev to do successful root or if its another way cause I don't wanna lose warranty on my device.

No other way, you have to do it with htcdev and yes it could void some warranty.
u have to go to HTC-dev to obtain unlocking code but u can use this tool 4 rooting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439 ... btw this tool is noob friendly just read carefully... and I DONT RECOMEND anything else but rooting since there is an update to arrive ( i made a mistake by installing CWM , and 4 update is needed stock recovery and locked bootloader ) ( i had my ass off arround here to remake things backward ))
on the note of updates. Beware once you upgrade your hboot you can't go back. Unless you have an S-OFF device that allows you to downgrade your hboot version. And Jellybean sense rom is not worthwhile all the trouble honestly.

it depends on which sense Rom you're talking abouit. Some are 100% working :good:
Anyway, as said below, if you upgarde Hboot to 1.31, you won't be able to downgrade exept if you have S-OFF.
Hboot 1.31 doesn't mean you can not try other ics Roms.

I'm not talking about the jelly sense being 100% working or not. I'm talking about having hboot upgrade which makes it a hassle if you want to flash ics roms. and the performance isn't something that is out of the ordinary anyway. Unless you really love sense that much

my goal is Cyanogenmod or MIUI which I loved while I was using Desire. I have some piece of experience with rooting and flashing etc so its not a huge problem for me.
The new thing is that I have to flash every time a new bootloader img. On Desire I flashed CM7 r2 and everything ran smoothly. Now Its gonna be a bit more complicated. I also see something about kernels, is there any need to flash custom kernels or everything will be ok without them?
If I use the All-in-one Toolkit it will unlock my bootloader, root phone, flash recovery? After that I will just update bootlader via command prompt, restart it and flash ROM via recovery?

update bootloader? you mean hboot version? If you want to update your hboot version then you should stay locked and update the official one. That way you don't have to unlock and re lock again. If you want to use CM or MIUI you don't need to upgrade your hboot . It would render your GPS useless. Though it's still your choice. Since jelly sense people are all on the hype about how fast it is and how smooth it is. lol. All I see is placebo.
And yes it is a bit of a hassle with the S-ON where we have to manually flash the boot img via fastboot, sigh. And as far as using custom kernel it is 100% your choice too. You can stick with the stock kernel provided by the rom or use other custom kernels. But from the amount of reading I have been seeing. The stock isn't really optimised for anything.
As for the toolkit I never bothered with it. I prefer I do it myself rather than relying on a toolkit and not know what's gonna happen while it runs. You might want to ask to the toolkit thread about it or read the thread.

No, a boot.img is a kernel. We have to flash kernels through fastboot since we don't have s-off

I have an unbranded (unlocked) HTC One X (Bought in UK). I recently received 4.1.1 update but I have decided that I want to root my phone. I have never rooted any phone before so I am pretty much new to the whole process.
I would really like to back up my phone as it is. I am not sure if it is possible to create a ROM of the current state of the phone and restore it if I want to. This is because my phone is still under warranty and if it goes faulty I would like to send it back to HTC in its original state.
I can backup my contacts, messages, apps etc. separately. It is the actual original HTC software I am more worried about.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.
I have official HTC 3.14.401.27 installed on my phone right now. I have never rooted it or anything. That is why I am asking if there is a way for me to save that as a ROM or save that ruu before I root my phone.
Make sure you make a nandroid backup of your stock rom after unlocking bootloader and installing clockworkmod recovery, and keep that backup in a safe place.

i believe there are links to stock kernels and stock recoveries. there's also a thread to go back from custom rom to stock rom if ever you change your mind

Yup I have been reading that.
But it says that:
These instructions require that you have one of the ICS hboot versions in order to work (1.12.0000 or lower). If you have one of the new JB hboots 1.28, 1.31 or 1.33 there is currently no way to return to stock until a JB ruu is released for your device.
After checking my phone, it seems like I have 1.33. It seems like there is no way for my phone to get back to stock at the minute. That is why I was asking if there is anything else I can do to make it possible before I actually root my phone.
Well I tried custom firmware after successfully unlocking my HTC One X. It says Unlocked but S-ON so not sure whats going on there? But since S-On I cannot change the CID as get the error (status read failed (too many links)) MY CID is H3G_001 and since I rooted my phone refuses to let me upgrade to OTA Jellybean which is frustrating forcing custom firmware.
Without updating CID I got stuck in a bootloop at least I guess it was as it was just stuck on the quitely brilliant screen for 20 minutes before I shut it off and tried another firmware which did the same. I am now in the process of a Nandroid recovery so I can at least use the phone. Three have a ton of bloatware which sucks. But I gotta stick with it as cannot figure out why it wont let me flash.. All help is appreciated. This phone is alot harder to flash than my HTC Desire which was a breeze.

you cannot s-off the one x, all you have done is unlock the bootloader which will allow you to flash clockwork recovery and flash su etc.
Unlocked s-on is normal.
Unlocking has nothing to do with s-off
At present there is no way to change your cid.
2x errors have occurred here
Ota updates fail after rooting if you leave the custom recovery on there.
You needed to unlock. Flash or boot custom recovery.
Flash supersu binaries
Flash stock recovery
Then boot ROM.
That way it would have been rooted and still allow ota updates.
You have made things worse by flashing the firmware.zip
By flashing the firmware you have updated your hboot. Probably to 1.36
Which will no longer work for the ICS ROM that is on your phone.
You need to find a nandroid backup for jellybean for your cid.
Just switching to PC to find you some links

you should still be able to boot after restoring your nandroid.
dont forget to pull the boot.img from your backup and reflash it as flashing the firmware will have put the JB boot.img on
you will want to restore the stock recovery which you can find in the firmware.zip once you have restored your backup
reboot into your rom and do the OTA that way

I restored from my nandroid and its working fine, all back to 4.0.4 with the phone unlocked I used CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip when i rooted my phone (or at least im sure I did as I did root over 6 months ago now).
So how would I go about updating to a custom firmware then?? Instead of the OTA as would prefer to get rid of the bloatware as half the apps aren't even English..

Try looking at something like latest android revolution HD
Very similar to stock but no bloat.

Okay thanks for that but how do I get it to work with my CID is what I would like to know do I have to first get OTA jellybean working then a custom firmware to update the CID? It seems a little confusing.. I listed my CID in first post but like I also said all custom firmwares I tried Viper X 3.3.4 and skydragon both left me with a phone stuck on boot screen for 20 minutes until i gave up and just turned off.
Your cid is irrelevant for anything except going to stock.
Custom ROMs arnt dependent on cid.
But they are dependent on hboot versions.
Cm10 ROMs will not work on any hboot>1.12
Any sense jellybean ROMs or ROMs with 3.1 kernels need a hboot version of at least 1.23
Couldn't saw viperx ROM but dragon is based on 3.17 so your hboot has to be minimum of 1.23
After installing the custom ROM you did flash the boot.IMG in fastboot didn't you?

You need a stock boot.img, stock recovery and a stock ICS Rom. Then you will get OTA to JB, upgrading that way your hboot. Then you can flash any custom JB Rom.
P.s. The correct boot.img is in the rom's zip folder. Every time you change the rom you should flash the proper boot.img.

Yeah problem is I need RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_H3G_UK_2.17.771.3 to go back to stock and it doesn't exist.. Anyway around the RUU exe ?
EDIT NM found I can use the nandroid method.. Giving it a shot now.

That did NOT work I got back to stock but without the RUU exe file it seems it will not install I loveked my phone aswell and when i try to install the OTA update i just get kicked to bootloader.

Sorry yeah it worked Was up till stupidly late trying to do it as I was following another method as I never saw yours (a really old one) Where I locked my phone so had to unlock etc.. Plus download that update OTA each time took 1 hour. I'm now on stock with Hboot 1.39 thankyou so much really appreciate! So now I just reflash recovery yeah? And backup nandroid then go for my custom rom?

I now have Android Revolution working perfectly and since I paid for Nova Prime I decided to go for lite after all and removed Sense thank so much for that method so much easier than the guides on here which make it sound so difficult I really was pulling my hair out!

I would like to root my HTC One M9 without installing TWRP or another custom recovery so that I can easily unroot and then take OTA updates. I have a developer M9 so my bootloader is already unlocked. I will eventually flash custom ROMs but at the moment, the stock firmware with Sense 7 is more than sufficient for me. Can anyone shed some light? I did find this http://www.how-to-root.club/2015/03/htc-one-m9-6891.html but I'm not sure how reliable it is since there's only a few comments.

"I could be wrong here and let me know if I am" it doesn't work that way with the m9. That site is bogus anyways, could you not tell by the video? Anyhow, even if you where to root it, there is no way to "simply" unroot it and take ota. There is new security on the m9 dealing with updates. Ota will not work if your software is or has been modified in any way, or if you have super cid. The common way for people to get OTA with the m9 is flash twrp, make a backup BEFORE rooting, flash newest supersu beta inside twrp, profit. When ota comes, go back to twrp, restore non rooted backup, flash stock recovery, take ota. IMO this is all a waste of time with an htc, just bite the bullet and spend $25 on soff and you don't have to worry about ota, you can flash firmware all day long before htc even releases it. Just flash a stock rooted rom like maximus if you don't want a lot of tweaks.
Your boot loader will say modified after flashing twrp, and will still say modified after restoring back to your stock backup. Thanks for all of the info. I wish simply rooting your phone wasn't such a pain. I guess I'll just flash TWRP, make a backup of my phone, and then root it and then if I need to do an OTA I can just restore the backup and flash the stock recovery. I found this download site for the recovery. I'm assuming I'd pick developer and then recovery. Do I use the signed one? Not ota, but you can flash firmware without doing anything. So you run a stockish rom like maximus and he releases his own OTA's, then you can flash official firmware to keep up with it, and if you get tired of that method, you can always ruu and go back to completely stock.

So I bit the bullet and installed TWRP, did a Nandroid backup, and then rooted my phone. Now I'm trying to determine whether I want to S-Off my phone. I know that I'd need to RUU and return to stock to flash firmware if I'm S-On, but if I flash a rom that is continually updated, then will I miss any of the features of new firmware released by HTC? I guess my question is, if a dev. updates a rom to reflect the newest firmware from HTC, how does that actually work because from what I've read, it doesn't actually touch the firmware of the phone? So would there be things that HTC can improve that the rom cannot?

Correct. Roms do not upgrade firmware. In the future you will need to upgrade firmware when wifi/camera/touchscreen/etc improvements are implemented into firmware. Having soff, you can simply flash just the firmware and not worry about software. Without soff, you have to revert back to stock and take ota or use new firmware RUU. Soff is a must on HTC and is honestly the only reason I didn't buy an s6. Ive had the m7/m8/m9 and the flexibility of rooting and firmware etc is unlike any other.

Correct. It doesn't have to be a perfect match, just in the same base. Right now your current firmware is fine, but most people swap to the newest developer with no red text. If you are new to htc and flashing firmware read instructions carefully or ask me. You need super cid or matching cid to flash firmware that isn't supported by your carrier variant. Everyone has to learn and these phones are near impossible to hard brick as long as you can read. Never flash cdma firmware on gsm phone, never run ruu for your phone if MID doesn't match, never turn s-on back on, but if you have to make sure you are NOT super cid or have unsigned firmware "no red text firmware" Never ever ever unzip a signed firmware file and edit it and zip it back up to flash unless you decrypt it and know what you are doing. Get an 32 gig or less sd card. Feel free to ask me any questions.
