Fresh user from T989 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi guys just sold my SGS2 (T989) and well one question if possible. On SGS2 I always used darkside format tool for ext4 and cache as well. Can I use it on SGS3 (i747) or just use bluild in to clockwork format tools for system wipe and cache ...and dev. ?
Thank you !
P.S.
I see you guys have very healthy battle between CM10 and ktoonsez ...what is general consensus on what is better ?

Ktoonsez kt747 is a kernel you can use on cm10... Unless you mean him and Task650 aokp, in which case that depends who you ask. I've never heard of the tool you mentioned, I just use my recovery. I use teamwin though, not cwm but both do the same.

ROM Request?? Tablet/Hybrid

OK so, I was poking around the EVO 4G forum (I like to check in on my old flashing buddies every once in a while) and seen this ROM that I thought was sick! Its a tablet/phone crossover type thing with CM9.
CM9 Tablet/Hybrid
I would so love anyone that can port this to the Epic 4G Touch!!! I will confess my love to you! LOL.
Thanks in advance

WHAT?! I LOVE YOU MAN!!! Thanks so much!!!!
So.. is there just not enough interest in keeping a tabUI/hybrid rom current??
When AoKPm5 fell off the dev table, I was a little bummed, then PA was ported, and I felt like there was some promissing hope that we would be able to keep the development cruising along for the tabUI/hybrids..
Well.. maybe its just a matter of having the source for the ICS kernel for the E4GT, but with the "source" already floating around.. I'm thinking that the kernel source wasn't the hybrid answer.. I hope I am wrong here though..
Maybe if we have enough voice to say the hybrid roms are still wanted, the development will continue.. :/

ONLY reason why Slim nTrim lost tab UI was cause the Dev who did tab UI stopped working on it, otherwise it would still be there. But Slim n Trim 2.0 has it still

it needs to be flashed using twrp, it will still say error 7 but it will still flash.. its an assert error in twrp that only show when a rom is built natively with twrp
Gotcha, thanks

Hey Chris, I've been avoiding TWRP cause I thought it had a more "heavy" process to replace your recovery from TWRP. Is all that is needed to restore back to a backup with agat or cwr recoveries would be to just go back to stock first with a one-click or something? Or is that even needed?
This is the only thing keeping me from testing anything with TWRP.

i dont understand the question? if you flash a rom with twrp you will have twrp, if you flash one with cwm you will have cwm.. its no different, just a different gui.. you dont have to go back to stock. or anything like that

I just thought I had read before that the only way to not run into issues after using TWRP was to go back to stock and then reinstall rom or backup after getting back to stock first.
If you don't have to do that and just factory reset is done from within FF18 (TWRP, CWR or Agats), then my concerns were mute at this point and I should have no problems going back and forth.
I am assuming that you are saying the latter is correct.
Edit: so if the latter is true, then I can flash kernels with different recoveries and they will overwrite eachother no problem? Does mobile Odin work the same if you have TWRP recovery?
The onther thing is that I didn't realize is that you helped or built TWRP, if that is the case, I would feel very comfortable using it, and I also didnt realize you built an FF18/CWR kernel.. I will have to grab that too..

yes i helped Dees_troy with twrp for this device, and I continue to help work on it, I consider it to be a great recovery...
I include it in my AOKP builds.. it includes safety features implemented and designed by Dees_troy and myself..
Those same safety features have been implemented in CM9 alpha6 and recent nightlies as well, so they are also safe.. which means those CWM versions are safe.
Any recovery made by me, Dees_troy, or TeamEpic since the release of TWRP would be considered safe..

IMHO I don't find Tablet UI on a phone useful or desirable, why a tablet UI on a small screen when you can enjoy it at its fullest on a Tablet. Just my opinion no pun intended to anyone. There is a reason to it not being enabled on a phone trust me.

I know some do not like it, but I personally think it looks better smaller, and compact. I do not find it difficult to read as some have described. There are many was to increase font size and still use the compact UI. I don't need to increase however as I like the size it is .. and even though most of the development for that mod has slowed, some roms still have it incorporated to use if desired. I myself have an excellent backup of AoKPm5 with the modded system apps so that everything works perfect.. but its stuck with FF02 as the latest kernel, I haven't tried the latest AoKP kernels with it yet.. maybe m5 will still work with TI, dees_troy & Chris's kernel but I'm not sure..
But anyways, my point is as with most every mod and customization we have for this device, ppl use what they like cause of personal preference and what they like.
You are more that free to not like the tUI mod, but there are still some that like it..

[Q] Best rom and best kernel for T999V

Hi all! I want to know what is the best Rom and the best kernel for the SGH-T999V. My carrier is Videotron.
Thanks
Sent from my SGH-T999V using xda app-developers app
Define best. Are you looking for best performance, longest battery time, coolest custom features, etc?
Battery life and coolest feature
Sent from my SGH-T999V using xda app-developers app
^ I have same question. Whats kenrel comparati with T999?
AOKP tends to have the most custom features out there and is pretty stable from what I've read. CM10 has the biggest community and the most support so it'll be the first to get a fully stable release.
And for battery life, I'd suggest Lean Kernel and don't overclock anything.
How can I install Leankernel without bricking my phone?
Sent from my SGH-T999V using xda app-developers app
Put the .zip file on your SD card then use ROM Manager to boot into CWMR. Wipe cache and then wipe Dalvik cache. Flash from there. I would assume since Videotron is combined with the T-Mobile forum all the ROMs and kernels for T-Mobile would also work for your phone. The only difference that I can tell from T-999 and T-999V is the 999V is Canadian. Other than that just don't flash any T-Mobile specific modems or radios and you should be good.
Ok so the kernel and the radio are not tbe same things. Im sorry I am totally noob in this.
Sent from my SGH-T999V using xda app-developers app
Don't sweat it. We've all been there before. There should be a sticky in one of these sub-forums with a TON of information about what everything is.
And yes, the kernel and radio are not the same. Think of the kernel as the engine powering everything and the radio as what interprets the signal you get from your provider. It's a bit simplified, but it's an accurate description. As long as you avoid flashing T-Mobile modems and radios you should be in the clear. To be honest, I've messed with radios before and it's really not worth the hassle 9 times out of 10 so you're really not missing out being with Videotron.
I have no doubt that stock kernel is and always will be the best kernel possible for this phone. Sammy has done a great job! Kernel devs will do their job(fix and break what they fixed before then break it again so you become a flash addict) but stock kernel will remain the best choice at the end.
Sent from my SGH-T999
SmartassV2/SIO. Not to mention overclocking and other optimizations.
Your argument is invalid.
And flash some roms and kernel just to try can break the phone? Will the performance will stay the samdme?
And thank you for all your answer.
Sent from my SGH-T999V using xda app-developers app
Sorry if it's it's off topic . I want to flash my kernel with Trinity
I'm wondering which is compatible, due to many many files for different roms and etc, for my phone which is Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999, rooted and stock everything. I'm also a noob , too. Brick my phone once and i don't want it to get replaced . LOL .
And I also want to install the AwsomeBeats v3 mod . Is this mod compatible for all Android phone ?
Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated .

It's possible, but not likely. If it was that easy to break the phone there wouldn't be such things as nightlies (ROMs that are updated pretty much every week night). I've had a few instances where I flashed the proper kernel, but it wasn't compatible with my phone. It's a simple enough fix, but nothing close to soft or hard bricking my phone just by flashing. Just make sure you don't do anything stupid like removing the battery mid flash, run out of battery mid flash, flash a ROM for a different carrier, flash a kernel for the wrong carrier (although kernels aren't TOO picky).

To be honest I was interested in trying Trinity myself, but gave up on that. I couldn't figure out what the hell was what and which was the most recent due to the naming of the different versions. Unless there's something you REALLY want that only Trinity offers my only recommendation is to move on. Or find someone here who has a signature saying they use Trinity and ask them which version you want.

[Q] Can't flash KT747 kernel on Slim Bean Rom?

I'm running Slim Bean 3.1.0 on my SGS3. Recently, I've been trying to flash the AGAT and KT747 kernels on my phone, but with no success.

98% Sure you are trying to mix an AOSP based ROM with a TW (Stock) type Kernel. That doesn't typically work. There is an option for the AOSP version of Ktoonsez kernel though that _should_ be a better fit with that ROM.
Have fun and continue to read up *Grin*
The thing is, I'm almost positive I downloaded the AOSP version for the KT747 kernel

That's a good start, the AGAT says LJ7 based in the Post, leading one to believe it is for TW ROMS. And on the Ktoonsez it does have a download link for either TW or AOSP. One you are looking for should be named "KT747-Kernel-AOSP-JB-SPR-12-11-2012.zip". Verify that and speak up again if you are still having issues.
Yes, I'm certain that was the file I flashed, because I remembered noting that the file was 7.72MB prior to downloading.
Also, I'm sure that the Slim Rom is compatible with the KT747 kernel because several posts were made on the thread saying that
the battery life was amazing, which made me wonder if I was doing something wrong.

Reading your original post, The order should go 1) ROM then 2) Kernel ... Then Wiping Cache and Dalvik-Cache (And other wipes if needed). Reason for this is if you flash the Kernel first, then the Rom you are over writing the custom Kernel with whatever is packaged with the ROM.
That is the only other obvious thing I see at this point. Hope that helps..

Why not just nandroid backup, wipe, and flash? It won't hard brick your device. Most, if not all, att ROMs are flashable on d2tmo.
What's so special about that AOKP anyway? We have Rootbox, AOKP from Kasper, and Illusion here... Can it be that different?

Actually it can, Task is a huge coder and adds a lot of the patches to the gerrit so if you use his rom you get the best of things usually. He is really an impressive dev and test things before release very thoroughly. He also makes his own kernel for the rom! I flashed and loved his rom a many times. But Illusion/Rootbox from Ramsay is the business for me now.

I installed TWRP from the open recovery script in GooManager, wiped and tried flashing Task's ROM in recovery, but I got an error. I was reading last night I may have to flash an AT&T TWRP recovery to make this work properly. I was planning on flashing Rootbox and Illusion eventually to oompare. I decided to try out Task's ROM based on Mr. Highway (Archangel) recommendation as being one of the best ROM'S for the SG3 period.

[Q] Can I flash any kernel after flashing a rom?

I use cm10 build 6, can I go ahead and pick a kernel to flash over the stock cm kernel?
Well the kernel you want must be compatible with the rom you are using and your device. For example if you are on CM10 you must flash kernels built for CM10/jelly bean. Otherwise you will get boot loops.
There might be some kernels for CM10 in the development section of Galaxy wonder.

It's better to stay with the same Kernel, from my point of view, I guess if you shared with us why do you wanna change the Kernel, there might be a solution for your problem, a friend of mine Flashed a different kernel and it was supposed to be compatible, but still he had problems and he flashed everything back again.
I wanted to use other governors. Btw I flashed a new kernel and it seems fine as of now

Good for you, as long as everything is working smoothly, then good luck with the new Kernel:good:
is it really just limited by CM9/CM10? Like if I am using acro's cm9 RC6 and the kernel was released after RC7 was released, maybe some of the extra features in RC7 causes a slightly different coding for the kernel which of course may cause problems if you use it on RC6?
also i suppose there's no need for clearing data/cache, fixing permission etc when flashing kernel right?
sorry if I'm not supposed to ask questions in a question. I just feel this is relevant to the title and i feel that it is better when people can just read this post and learn more about kernels. The list of how-tos in the dev section has not much details on kernels
