[Q] How to keep an App running ? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, is there a way to stop the phone from closing an app that is running ? Let me explain, i use my phone to film off road expeditions, but after a certain time the camera app closes, i then have to restart it, then it closes again and so on. Is there a way to keep it from closing down ?

There's really nothing you can do about that since Android manages the memory and kills off apps based on memory free, app priority, and LFU (least frequently used order). (the only way to make an app not get killed sooner than regular apps is to have it host a service.)
It only takes a moment to start the camera, so what's the deal? If you need the camera to be available in a microsecond then you want a dedicated camera instead

[Q] currently on CM9, build 508, but no working camera..help!

Its been like this awhile but my my camera seems to force close every time I go to the stock camera app. The app opens and the camera shows a very laggy display when moving it around but then when I press the button to take the pic, it force closes and says "Unfortunately, the camera has stopped working." My friend has the same phone and ROM and build # on his phone and he has no camera issues.
P.S. camera takes pictures when I'm on a third party app (ex. Instagram, camera fun, paper camera etc...)

Wipe Data/Dalvik/Cache and start from scratch all over.
I'm having the same problem with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus. I've flashed a couple of different roms, wiping cache/dalvik/system every time. Yet the stock Camera continues to crash upon launch.
Only because I'm lazy right now I haven't yet wiped everything and started fresh. But I did remember I had purchased this app awhile ago: Camera ICS+
It's basically the stock Camera with a few tweaks to it. Since all 3rd party camera apps work fine, this one launched and shoots photos/video/panoramas no problem.
They have a free version with ads, but a couple dollars instead of completely wiping everything might be something to consider.
go to manage apps, all, camera.. then press the clear data button. now try reopening the camera app.
Take adb logcat, reproduce the issue, forward it to the right places.

Ah, well... will you look at that. This fixed the problem for me. Went to the App Info for Camera and hit Clear Data. Works like a charm now, thanks!

laggyness with certain apps

I've had the zenwatch for almost 2 weeks and i will be keeping it. That being said here is a heads up, i found that using the app facer to make watch faces and using wear mini launcher together causes a good bit of lag when performing any action on the watch. to remedy this issue i downlaoded watch maker and low behold the lag went away. so if anyone is haven a lag issue check into what apps you are use to make your watch faces and also what launcher u have choosen. hope you guys find this helpfull .
So, did you uninstall wear mini launcher ?

no i switched to watch maker it works better with min launcher
I've actually had this happen a number of times and I'm not sure why. It doesn't seem to have a consistent cause. Usually it'll be when I install a new app or something, but it's happened other times as well, but it doesn't happen consistently with one app or another. For me, the lag shows up as the screen basically being frozen without being able to control anything. Eventually, it will unfreeze and I'll usually see the mini-launcher screen, but even a restart with the back button won't solve the freeze.
For me, it was worse when I had Mini Launcher installed, but it still happens occasionally without it. I no longer have either Facer or Watchmaker installed, either. I'm using the Weather Watch Face, though. I wonder if it has something to do with watch faces in general?
When I was using Mini Launcher, apps would almost never launch the first time I tapped on them. It would go back to the watch face and freeze for a few seconds, and force me to go back to Mini Launch and tap again. Without Mini Launcher, this still happens occasionally from the built-in Start... item, but much less frequently.
I have all 3 installed and it doesn't seem to lag too bad. I guess I don't interact with it the same as I would with a phone so it doesn't bother me at all. Whenever I get a card it interacts with it seamlessly, that's about as much as I need it to do

Interacting with cards hasn't been a problem for me, either, it's launching an app that's not already running that seems to be the issue. Sometimes (or almost every time for me with Mini Launcher), the new app doesn't come to the foreground, and the watch appears to hang for several seconds. It then has to be launched a second time to become visible.
I've definitely seen it lag like that. Hopefully it's just a software issue with android wear being so new and updates will help fix that. It's got plenty of processor and ram torrun the tiny apps no problem
I noticed a considerable amount of lag while using mini launcher. To the point that I didn't even want to show off the watch to other people because it made it seem terrible. Major difference since uninstalling, lag free now. I also use Watch Maker and a few Play Store watchfaces with no lag issues.
Wish we could move the start menu to the first selection on the tap screen instead of the last, then I really wouldn't care about a separate launcher.
1+ for deleting mini launcher. I like the app but its so dam laggy. As far as Watch Maker app works at times for me so I deleted that as well. I was using Facer until I ran into Intellicom which seems to be very easy to use and no change in my battery life.
I think this is more of a symptom of using a single core A7 processor. I imagine all of the governors and IO schedules are set up for battery life so that probably doesn't help either. It might just be coincidence that you are running something while a background task is also running.

Apps restarting randomly

Hey guys, over the past 5 days of using this phone I have noticed a few odd things. One that is really annoying is some apps just close and open again. Not an Android force close, there is no notification, the app just stops and instantly restarts. Apps this happens the most with is The Chive and Gmail. I've used a lot of other apps but these two are the worst. And Gmail is an important app, I use it a lot.
Has anyone else had this issue? Any ideas what could be causing this? Along with the poor battery, this is making a great piece of hardware unusable. Any info on this would be appreciated.
Cheer's!!!
I haven't noticed your issues, but I have had very inconsistent results with video streaming apps from TV and cable networks and my cable provider (xfinity from comcast in the US) that range from force closing to just not being to load videos.

Has never happened to me in Gmail. I use it a lot with 3 different accounts. But force closes are closely related to memory leaks that are very abundant in 5.0. But since others dont seem to be experiencing this issue, I'd recommend a flash of the latest firmware and a complete wipe (if possible). Do you have any memory manager apps? If so that could be an issue too.

Yeah I've had odd reactions with videos too including lags which shouldn't happen - given the hardware specs.

Having the same issue. looks like it happens like once every 30 minutes to me, no matter the app. going to wipe data and do a firmware update, let's see how it goes.
I have this issue (crashing apps randomly /w no error) in particular music apps like DI.FM, Google Music, and Audible while driving. The phone is not (directly) in use by me as I use a 3.5mm or Bluetooth an initially pressing the pay button before starting my trip. This is frustrating because it randomly crashes (no notification) while I am busy driving and I have to pull to the side of the road and start it again (safety). Sometimes the crashing will not happen for hours at a time (and I enjoy the audio), other times it happens every few minutes (and I get fed up and give up on the phone wanting to put it under the tire).
I was trying to find a good way to log the error but I am too inexperienced and just go frustrated after a while as I could not find a way to log it while it was in use (playing audio) during my transit.

Extreme lag with camera apps

I've seen threads about performance issues when charging etc and I have them myself!
One thing that completely destroys me is the performance when trying to take a quick picture or use an app that uses the camera.
E.g. barcode scanners move the complete opposite direction
Snapchat is also practically unusable. When I open it, it completely s**ts itself every time and is unusual!
I guess my question is..... Do you think custom ROMs and recoveries will solve the issues?
Thanks

I definitely think we should see some optimizations in the next weeks. Snapchat would crap out on me and eventually cause the camera module to crash. It got to the point that the camera would turn black within Snapchat and even within the camera app itself. Only fix was to reboot the phone to get the camera working again. Yesterday I received a snapchat update, not sure if it was meant to address performance issues, but it now works more smoothly and doesn't crash as often. There is definitely room for improvement!
It's really doing my head in and glad I'm not on my own in seeing this!! I don't know anyone else with the 5x to compare so been searching online.
I timed it today, I rebooted the phone and left it 5 minutes without opening anything. I fired up the camera app and it took 124 seconds (just over 2min) until the app was ready to take a photo (the blue circle showing around the shutter button). Then tapping the button to take a photo took a further minute to take the actual photo. Then the phone was that sluggish it needed a reboot.
Not sure if it's the hardware, the os or the app but I've tried Open Camera too and that seems to be really really slow. And, as the OP says, Snapchat totally craps out as do other apps that use the camera.

I just tried the same test. The camera app opened and was ready to shoot (blue circle showing) in about 2 seconds. Double pressing the power button to open the camera app had the blue circle around the shutter button showing right away
Every now and then it does work perfectly. But more times than not there is a massive lag. Usually after the phone has been on for half a day, but like this morning sometimes when it's just turned on.
I've experienced the same issues mentioned by you guys, especially in the OP.
Snapchat has practically been completely unusable until the most recent update, and that only marginally improved things. The root cause seems to be the camera itself, as I'm only seeing this type of lag in apps that access the camera. I can't help but imagine Google is working on a fix for this in the very near future, just one of those 'early adopter' issues I guess. It has caused me to do daily reboots just about, which is very aggravating because that defeats the purpose of a good camera if you miss the moment you're trying to capture. As I'm sure you guys have noticed, when the camera app actually works properly, the pictures are pretty impressive, which makes it all the more aggravating that it can't be used as fluently as designed.
Hoping for all of our sake that Google fixes this soon.
I'm in the same boat.
