[Q] Cannot move apps to sd card on ICS - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I just installed Evervolv ICS rom on my phone. Things are looking great so far. The speed is more than reasonable and everything seems to be working out of the box. The only problem I noticed is that I started to run out of space on my internal storage and Move to SD card is greyed out for all apps, including the ones I downloaded.
1. do you recommend other better ICS rom for my phone ? From what I've read this is the best.
2. How to enable moving the apps to SD card ?
Thanks all.

I don't recommend ICS at all...

Don't know if that rom uses the same a2sd as many ICS (and GB) roms have built in, but have you tried this in terminal emulator after first boot:
Code:
su
a2sd install
y
n
y
Forgot to mention: you'll need an EXT partition for that.

[Help] Apps on SD Card

I've read most of the guides down here and other forums and how to install apps on the sd card, but I'm confused with one thing, having the AP2SD on the ROM automatically does it? or having just the ext03 partition? I tried every method i read but there is something im doing wrong as apps are still installing on the phone (some apps on SD and some on phone), i even tried the modInstall app and chose the SD card but I still can't get it, I know im doing something wrong or missing some step please help me
you need both
you need o have a rooted rom with AP2SD included if not AP2SD installed a partion ext 3
Download gscript lite from the market place the attaced script in the in the gscript folder in the gscript menu add script and see what it says
sorry forgot to upload unzip and use the file inside
thanks ill try it now
btw im using LeeDroid latest ROM and latest radio version with bootloader 0.80
so you just need to set up the ext3
•Froyo A2SD mod install location is included in the rom doent that meet your requirements
havent used it myself didnt know it existed till i checked the LeeDroid rom

it is working, but is there a reason why some apps would not install on the SD card?
thanks for the help <3
it does seem to be working i dont get the stderr messages not sure what they mean
what apps arent installing to your sd remember your imternal phone storage will decrease slighty i have about 40 apps installed and mine is down to 88mb
only: Bluetooth File Transfer, Facebook, Papertoss
but no big deal thanks for the help with the script it's was excellent!
paper toss i actually went into the settings/ applications/ manage applications /downloaded and had the option on the phone to move it to sd which i did
Hi everybody, just thought id mention that if your using a rooted froyo 2.2 Rom, you not longer need to use apps2sd or make a partition on you memory card. Instead use setinstallloctaion.apk this then installs all your apps to card without the need to partition your sdcard. works great for me.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA app
well I am runnig froyo and i installed SDMove which has "Apparently" moved apps to the SD that had gone to the internal memory
But:
If you use the FroYo APP2SD method and moved your apps manually to the sdcard, will you be able to use them when you connected your phone to the PC in "Disk Drive" mode?

[Q] Question about 2.2 App2sd and the App2sd of custom Rom

For the App2sd function of Froyo 2.2, I had set default to install the applications to SD card and all the "Move to SD" button can work. However, I find that some application still use up the internal memory, e.g. 10Mbs application can only move 5Mbs to SD card.
May I know any different between the 2.2 App2sd and that of custom Rom?
Is the App2sd of custom Rom (i.e. the one need to create ext2/3/4 on SD card) can move all the whole application to SD card and will not use up the internal memory?
Thanks!
There are essentially 3 forms of A2SD:
1. Froyo A2SD - moves the application (from /data/app) to the FAT32 partition of the SD card. Does not touch the Dalvik cache (data/dalvik-cache) or the application data (/data/data).
2. Legacy A2SD - moves the application (from /data/app) to an EXT partition of the SD card. Does not touch the Dalvik cache (data/dalvik-cache) or the application data (/data/data).
3. Legacy A2SD+ - moves the application (from /data/app) and the Dalvik cache (data/dalvik-cache) to the EXT partition of the SD card. Does not touch the application data (/data/data).
Options 1 and 2 should be pretty much identical in terms of internal storage usage, and option 3 should save the most space.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that any attempt to move /data/data to SD card causes a lot of instability, which is surprising because I would have thought that the Dalvik cache would have been more problematic.
The long and short of it is that there is no way to stop applications from consuming storage if they use /data/data. A prime example is Google Earth, which still consumes a lot of internal memory regardless of A2SD because of the data in /data/data.
Personally, I use Froyo A2SD, with the fusecompress mod to compress the Dalvik cache in internal memory.

legacy apps2sd that comes native in froyo, just moves the .apk to the sd card, and not all apps can be moved. apps2sd+ that comes with custom roms, creates a parallel file system identical to that of androids but on your sd card, then points your device to the sd card as the install location, this means alot less space is taken up on your device, some install data is sometimes still stored on your device but for example i have over 200 apps on my desire and some of them are quite large, rockplayer/nfs shift/ 5 or 6 gameloft games ect and i still have over 50mb free
Thanks for your reply, I have a clear concept of these two app2sd now
So i just root my unbranded HTC Desire with Android 2.2 (from holland)
I rooted with the unrevoked method. Link here
I wanted to root because i was in need of ROM, only had 15MB left and everything was already on my SD card installed the normal way.
also with the "forced install to sd" method i was still in need of more ROM.
Like in the post above i just want to have 400 apps installed.
So i need a custom rom.
Now i have notes that if i install a custom 2.2 froyo rom i may have difficulties with bluetooth or fm-radio and maby other problems.
I have also heared about htc releasing source codes and now it should be possible to work around or fix those problems i just mentioned.
anyways I am still n00b in this all and doing allot of research for now. I just want to have a rom that would be the same as what i have now(WORKING WITHOUT PROBLEMS AND NO BUGGES) but with the app2sd in it so that i can have 300 apps and still have free memory.
so could somebody tell me what to do? is there already a custom rom out that works perfect, or i should stick with my rom, or what about OpenDesire
Well hope somebody can help me out with some wisdom.
Cheers and thanks in advanced.

nobody can help me out?
is there an custom rom that works with fm radio and bluetooth and camera and all and has the htc sense in it?
or should i figure out to make my own custom rom?

Most custom Sense ROMs are fine.
The "issue" I think you are referring to is that Sense ROMs do not support the Bluetooth HID profile so cannot utilize a Bluetooth keyboard, whereas AOSP ROMs like CyanogenMod do support Bluetooth HID but the FM radio doesn't work.
Having said all that, I'd imagine that 300+ apps is probably an unrealistic target on any ROM due to the data stored in /data/data. It might be possible if the specific apps don't have much of a /data/data requirement, but in general I'd say it was unlikely.

k having that said, i was thinking of buying a 16gb microsdhc class 6 card.
but, well i didn't know about the bluetooth HID , still is it hard to build up my own custom rom?
I mean, getting for example my current rom and modding things. or getting an official rom from htc and modding that?
try different roms and see which one is the best. Defrost, Opendesire, Aurax, or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
all of them are great but the best depends on your taste and expectatives.
k making a backup now.
I think i go try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
I have a 4gb microSD card, so i read that to enable a2sd+ i need to repartition the sd card. can this be done from the phone? i got the clockworkmod recovery.
and shall i make it 1GB so i can install more apps? just thinking crazy.
"is this Rom Manager in the android market?"

New version; Adobe Flash Player 10.1.105.6

..available for download in the market. App size reduced to 10,96 Mb (before:12,39)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Grabbed this - its nice its smaller than the last release, but I still think it'd be nicer if they could have shipped off the 4.5mb(?) apk to the sd card... I am still teetering on the edge of having the annoying 'you are low on space' message everytime my cache on maps/facebook gets too large.
Yeah.. It downloads at 4.5Mb but installs at 16.34MB. It's annoying How phone manufacturers missed out on giving us more internal memory or providing complete App2SD thing
Thanks for the heads-up.
BTW guys, I just installed a custom ROM that had A2SD+(LeeDroid), and I've never had to worry about the low disk space error. I hope you could try it too.
You would get decreased performance and it would not work when SD card is mounted on your PC if placed on SD card with froyo apps2sd

been using A2SD+ for awhile now (which is different from froyo A2SD) and i don't notice decrease in performance at all
Stock FroYo A2SD won't allow it to be moved as it's a system app. only using A2SD+ in a custom ROM will move it (and it has no affect on performance)

FWIW, I'm using "Stock Froyo A2SD" on a custom ROM (MCR9) and I've moved Flash to SD card (i.e. on the FAT32 partition) without issue and there's no performance penalty.
I can't see any reason why I'd want to use Flash whilst my SD card is mounted on my PC, so this has never been an issue IMHO.

Dave
Thanks for this but I was forced to revert back to the prior version. It took up a whopping 12Mb storage space and there's no way I can afford to lose that. As I'm all Stock Froyo I cannot move anything to do with Flash .
My phone then starting complaining that it's run out of space. Grrr.
can any1 please upload this exact version on 4shared / rapidshare ?
thanks in advance
Here is my backup.
Thats the only app I cant move to my sd card .... I have added the tweak ... so by default eveything installs to the SD card .. bar it looks like .. preinstalled stuff... I have not got root yet ...

[LOOKING FOR] App for SOLVE internal memory problem on my Desire..any idea?

Hello team / people, I'm just looking for an App for SOLVE my internal memory problem on my Desire cause I'm always getting LOW MEMORY SPACE on this device, almost of my essential Apps are installed on my microSD card, myabe there is an App for simulate more space on internal memory, like a partition or something that sucks microSD space and solve this problem, don't know, any idea? any help?
thanks for everything.
BR,
Yh partition ur sdcard
HTCdesire ~ s-off & rooted
RunnymedeAIO 4EXT
Try cachemate app in market. Gets u a bit more space n app2sd
HTCdesire ~ s-off & rooted
RunnymedeAIO 4EXT
I struggled like crazy with this problem before I rooted my phone and got an extra partition to store app data and cashe.
I guess you ask this question because you dont want to root your phone. I remember this thread from the time I used to struggle with this exact problem. Perhaps they have new ways to increase the int.memory these days.
(hope its allowed to post links to other forum)

The best way i've found this is to root your phone and install Cyanogenmod 7.1, and use an app available from the Play Store called S2E. You will need to prep your SD card though - I used a card reader, inserted it into my computer and booted off a Ubuntu Live CD, then use Gparted to make two partitions - one large main fat32 partition for music etc, and a 1GB ext4 partition after the fat32 one for apps. Once you have that, put it back in the phone and you can setup S2E to move entire apps to the SD card I have about 90 apps on there now, works perfect, makes the phone better than new! Hope this helps.

please please tell me more about it .. i am using latest version of miui. can i use S2E ? Miui already required a hidden partition for installation purposes. Do I need to create another on ?
Miui doesn't support S2E I believe as it designed for Cyanogenmod. There is another application called link2sd (I think) which does the same sort of job. I remember finding it ages ago and it not working well with Cyanogenmod though. Cyanogenmod 7.1 seems to be the most stable ROM around at the moment though, just a little slow is my only quarrel. This is from my experience anyway, haven't tried ICS ROMs. Tried Miui for about 10 minutes and didn't like it personally.
Try the ICS BCM 3.1U0
It IS working fabulous.
And it has a built in app called Mounts2SD. It seems that I can use both my internal and the extra partition and the space on my SD-card.
I highly recommend that you format your SD-card and get a 512mb partition. Then its smooth sailing.
Which ROM do you currently use?

[Q] Which rom based on these requirements ?

Hello all,
I love my 7105 but I have this HUGE problem with the CM nightlies I am using, the internal storage space is always to the max.
I have a 32g SD card and I can't install ANYTHING on it, I have a ton of games and they eat up all in the internal space
So I'd like a rom which allow me to either install the games or any program I want to the SD like it was possible on the older android versions, why the hell did google kill this great feature, I feel like I have an iphone when i get told it can't install or update because it's full.
Or if this is really not possible is there a possibility to mount some "internal" folder on the external sd card, i have tried folder mount to move real racing which is 3gigs by itself, it tells me all is done but the game is still on the inside card...
Thanks a lot for the help
Mokee ROM does allow saving apps to SD card.. Though I don't know if it works on n7105.. I used it on my n7100
Its a CM based ROM.
