Charge Rate Question - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I love my galaxy nexus(verizon version) however there is something about it that drives me insane, and it is a fact that has been noted on almost all android phones, when plugged in the battery can die, this commonly happens to me when i am trying to use navigation, i will be on my way to someplace where i have no idea where i am, or where i am going and just when i need it most, the phone, that is plugged in WILL ****ING DIE, and i will have to stop on the side of the road and charge it for twenty minutes or drive twenty minutes in the wrong ****ing direction, conveniently, since it is my phone that was doing the navigation, i also cant call anyone for directions, this, to me personally, seems ****ING INSANE, now it is my understanding that the charging rate for the phone when plugged into what the phone percieves to be an ac adapter is capped at 800ma, and 500ma when it is plugged into a usb source, regardless of the output of the charger, it will charge at a rate of no higher than this, presumably these caps were put in place to keep the battery from blowing up, or the phone from overheating, my question is, can these caps be changed or are they hardware caps? i dont care if my phone blows up im willing to assume the risk because it is likely that if it does this **** again ill get out of the car on the ****ing highway and spike it into the ground like i just scored a ****ing touchdown, i know that the usb rate can be changed to the ac rate through the usb fast charge mod, however this simply(in my understanding) tricks the phone into thinking that it is always plugged into an ac adapter, and therefore it is stlll limited to the 800 cap, this also means that the phone can not be used through any usb interfaces while this is occuring, which in my situation is a problem because i use a usb stereo in my car that reads the songs off my phone(grom android adapter very good btw), so my longwinded question is can the caps for the usb charging rate be raised to say 1200ma without loosing usb acess? and if that not possible, can the ac cap at least be raised to say 1200(speculative number just needs to be more than the max draw of the phone)? anyway thanks for reading my rant and putting up with my ****ty internet grammar

You're stuck with 500mA if its coming from the USB port in your car (which charges like a PC usually). And if you go to "fast charge", you'll lose USB file access, yes.
Your only choice is to choose to go with a "fast charge" kernel and lose USB file access, or get a 2A car charger that'll keep it topped up. Less satisfactory but an option is to turn off LTE, which is a huge battery drain.

that what i mean i have a 2a car charger, it still dies, theres a cap on that charging rate as i understand it, 800mah, can that be adjusted?

i believe on a non samsung charger you are capped at 500ma
but if you use a fast charge kernel i don't think it is limited to 800ma

well
I had the simiar situation. well, LTE drains the battery like a hell, and USB charges freaking amazingly slow...
I solved that by using custom kernel that supports fast charge, and did it..
but if u use the fast charge, you will lose the USB link option, oh well,
U can turn the fast charge off to use the USB.
sucks that you can't have both rabbits.

Charge rate
My battery life sucks any Ideas

Ya my battery dies when I use the car charger. Ur best solution is buy another for just the car.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^

nobody directly answered the question, is the non-usb charging cap hardware based or software based? can somebody who understands the kernels answer it?

Easy trick is to turn off the screen if your battery is low, you'll still get audible navigation.
Doesn't matter if the charging cap is software or hardware based, no one has gone above it anyway.

Cool story bro.
I like the part when you said ****ing

Dude, putting it at 1200 Mah is impossible because of heat issues and also I don't even think that's supported by any kernel. Sorry.

Where are you guys seeing 800 mA charge rate?

I was going to ask the same question but will post here instead.
Can someone confirm the 800 ma charging cap ? Where is this info found ?
I had a different android phone ( cannt remember which ) and had found in its forums some kernel code someone posted with a 700ma cap for that phone. I will try to search for that reference.
So basically anything over 800ma is overkill and we will not benefit from it ? Is that correct ... includes wall chargers and car chargers....

The charging amp branded on the chargers only tells you how much the internals of the charger can endure.
It is the phone itself that controls how big amp it will receive (usually 500mA or 1000mA). So you could have a 50 A charger and still only pull out 1000mA.
The limitation to 1A is of the spec that USB standard have.

These guys have it. I used to suffer a slight drain even when plugged in via USB if I was gaming, but then I cahnged to Trinity kernel and now I just turn on USB fast charge if I'm charging from the computer while gaming heavily. Don't need USB file transfers while I'm playing.... and I presume you don't need it while you're driving either. Just flash a custom kernel, problem solved.

So why is my battery draining while charging?

I've noticed this happening any time I tether via USB or use GPS navigation while plugged in. Even though I'm connected and charging, I slowly but surely discharge. This weekend I used Google Nav for 2 hours and lost 20% of my battery while charging! On Juice Plotter, I notice the green charging glow at the bottom is a more transparent shade of green (as opposed to solid green when solely charging). Any ideas what causes this or how to avoid it? It seems to be recent.

Let me guess, you're charging off a USB port in your laptop, or using the data cable that came with the phone in your car charger?
Not all USB sources (or cables, for that matter) are created equally. Most PC/laptop ports put out 500mAh, half of what the Evo is designed to take (the factory AC adapter, the wall plug, is 1000mAh, aka 1amp).
Since it's only getting half the draw it can't quite keep up with how much power you're sucking away from the battery. This is usually only present when using the device heavily, such as with the screen on and GPS or WiFi/3G actively running.
The charging indicator (at least on Sense) indicates if it's getting the full "AC" charge (1amp) or if it's getting a reduced current charge. Sounds like that's what you're noticing.
My wife's Samsung Moment charger is 700mAh/0.7amp, and it can keep my Evo steady during use (it's powering it for 3G+WiFi tether right now), but it doesn't really charge fast at all, basically it just keeps it from depleting.
I've been meaning to try one of the USB Y-cables that join 2 standard USB ports to one female port for combined power of 1amp, but I'm not sure it will work as I hope. Anyway, I'll report back if I get around to it.
Otherwise, use an actual 1amp AC adapter whenever possible. Shop on eBay, chargers are stupid cheap. Just look for one that says it can do 1amp/1000mAh. If you're using the phone at work and want to have a convenient charging source, get one of the $20 docking cradles with an AC adapter on eBay. If it's in your car, any 12v USB charger should work, as long as you use a proper pass-through charging micro USB cable and not a "data cable". There's a slight difference in how the pins are wired inside. The Rocket Fish brand of micro USB cables are known to work (that's how I charge mine at full power in my car).

3rd year CmpE.
I had the same problem until I noticed how hot my phone was using the nav. 13 hour drive. I purchased a vent cradle for the car and so that it can stay cool while in use and charging. While the other guy may be right theoretically, its not right practically. The evo will shut off its mini usb hub once it starts getting dangerously hot so that it won't damage your phone. Long story short make sure your phone is at safe temps no need to buy another charger for your evo. keep at cool temps so that phone won't cut off power supply will even shut your phone down if its way to hot, happened to me in atlanta not fun.

When you say "included charging cable" do you mean the wall plug that came with the Evo or just the cable with a USB connector on one end and a micro USB on the other end? Because THAT cable is pinned as a data transfer cable and designed to relay only half voltage no matter what you plug it into. I know, because it only charged my Evo at slow speed when plugged into my USB car charger. Once I replaced it with the Rocket Fish cable it charged at full speed.

See above. While I agree that heat will kill the battery and possibly trigger a shutoff, I don't think that's his problem. If you use the wrong cable or charger you will only get half charging current.

I mean the USB cable that comes in the box with the EVO that plugs into the AC adapter. Maybe I will look into a new cable then. Hmm.
Edit: Those Rocketfish cables that you mentioned seem to be ungodly expensive. No way in hell am I going to pay more than $5 for a USB cable. Any alternatives?

This is the one I got: http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKETFISH-MOBI...ARGING-CABLE-/350384355972?pt=PDA_Accessories
$3 shipped
And there are 2 USB cables that came with the Evo (mine anyway), a thick one that was bundled with the wall charger and a thin one that's intended just for data sync. The thin one doesn't seem to charge at full speed.
If you're using the other one and it's STILL draining then maybe there is an issue with heat or something, like the other guy said. Is the phone SUPER hot at the base, where the kickstand is, when this happens?
OP - I am having the same problem. I'm 95% sure it's caused by something wrong in CM6 regarding how it handles USB charging. Past few nightlies I have been leaving my phone on the charger doing NOTHING overnight and it goes dead.
This CANNOT be due to lack of charging strength:
#1 the same exact charger worked perfectly in the past, before I flashed a certain nightly - not sure which one exactly it started in
#2 if it was charging, but slowly why in the world would the battery drain when I have it underclocked to 245 mhz and the phone is sleeping with screen off?
On my standard charger that came with the phone it is working fine even though it's a USB that plugs into an adapter - not sure why this doesn't work with my other one that I had from another phone since it worked perfectly before. Something is definitely odd with CM6 and USB charging.

I've also noticed lately that my phone will charge insanely fast. Like from 30% to 90% in half an hour.
Sprocket - stupid question here... do these Rocket Fish charging cables also handle data transfer just as well as the stock micro-usb cable that came with the phone or would someone want to have one JUST for charging and keep their stock cable for data transfer purposes?

[Q] Discharge faster than charge?

Hey all, xda noob here! Just got my Nitro for Christmas and loving it so far (way better than the Backflip I replaced it with).
Having trouble with the battery though. When I'm playing a high-demand game, I lose battery even when I'm plugged into the included wall charger. I know that it's possible for the battery to drain faster than a car charger or usb port can keep up with, but from what I could find, that doesn't usually happen with a wall charger.
Just wanted to know if this is normal, or if it's something with my phone.
Never tried to game while being on the wall charger. I can give it a try tonite to see whether it's happening to me too. What game are you playing btw, just so I can test the same game too.
Kinda funny though, since the wall charger has 1.2amp output, which should be more than enough to power the phone and charge the battery at the same time.
I can confirm this issue as well.
My laptop adapter has USB charging port with 2.0A output, plugged in Nitro would discharge during Google Talk video call + active WiFi tithering (with not much use from connected laptop), although the battery stats say it's charging.
Playing Sentinel 3. I'm rooted, but haven't tried any of the battery optimization suggestions yet. Either way, that's a lot of drain. At one point I also got an overheat warning, and powered off, only to find that the battery was completely drained. Not sure if the issues are related.
Well, now the next on the list...battery drain/overheat issue lol!! I'm trying to defend this phone, but hell, LG really ****ed this phone up hehe.
mine works just fine.

More FUD I see...
USB charging ports are limited to 1.5A as per USB 2.0 specifications. The Nitro HD requires 1.2A to charge. If you have other USB devices connected to the system, you won't get the dedicated 1.5A. This is why your device loses power yet the charge indicator is active.

Not sure what other devices you are referring to, I was talking about a wall adapter with one usb port charge only. Since I can't really test how much amperage there is, I can't say if its a fud or not, however we are talking about charge-only port, I see no reason why they should follow usb 2.0 specifications to 100%, and besides there is always gadgets for super quick charge, I'm sure they don't follow such specifications.
But the fact that even with the original wall adapter Nitro can drain battery faster then charging just shows there is something wrong with the picture.

[Q] MHL cable not charging

So i got an MHL cable to connect my 1X to my tv to play snes games with a bluetooth controller
It works fine, plus it looks great... BUT!
The phone says it's charging.. little red light, battery info says charging, but it looses charge as i use it.
Just finished playing a snes emulator for 30 mins. I had the phone in airplane mode, plus the screen brightness on the lowest setting.
After 30 mins it went from 85% to 72%!! plus it was really warn/hot.
Is this normal? Is it because the screen is still on on the 1X?
Does the media link thingy work better? does the screen turn off on the phone when using that?
Anyone else got an MHL cable? does your phone loose charge while using it?
Under heavy use, charging in USB mode (500mA limit) will usually still see the battery level decrease. Are you putting the auxiliary charger off a USB out from your TV/console? If so this will be the case.
I have only given my MHL adapter a quick try. Not really used it in anger yet. Can't say for sure what would happen if you used a wall charger instead of a USB one. No doubt the charge wouldn't drop, but would want to keep a very close eye on the temperature!
Are you rooted?
i think the mhl adapters (mine at least) has a maximum output, to the phone, of 500ma.
This means even if you plugin a wall charger @ 1A, then it will still only provide the phone 500ma of power max.
The rest of the power goes to actually powering the cable itself, in order to get the picture on the tv.
the reason it drains, is because the consumption of the screen/cpu is greater than the 500ma of power that the mhl adapter is providing.
Thanks for the reply.
My phone is not rooted. It's just a standard out of the box 1X.
Also, when using the MHL cable the phone was plugged into the mains charger & was still loosing charge! plus it was very warm..
Maybe i'll try to find some info about those charging dock/cradle things with the HDMI out. Maybe that be better???

Ah, ok.. that makes sense really.
I did think maybe there was more power being used than coming in... shame you can't turn the screen off on the 1X.
I think you have already done the sensible thing of trying airplane mode and min screen brightness. If it still heats up doing that on USB charging, then it's unlikely a different dock/adapter would see a reduction in drain & heat. I'd save your money there.
I only asked about root in case you could try Core Control to reduce heating, but never mind there.
Only thing I found that kept my phone cool when charging under heavy use (before I rooted it), was making sure I took the case off and I rest it on a granite drinks coaster I have! Draws the heat out of the phone very efficiently!

Turn off fast charge

Any way to disable rapid charging?
I have a generic USB extender and used it to extend my charger cable by a couple of feet. When the phone showed "full charge in 5 hours" I realized it's making the charge speed extremely slow. The USB cable is a regular sized USB male on one end while the other end is a regular sized USB female. You could use that to slow down your charging to about the speed you'd get by charging from a USB 2.0 connector on any PC/laptop.
One the same note will using a standard charger from other cell phones (that I have like 300 of) and the cable that came with phone cause any problems or just charge slow. I travel a lot and have several USB devices I bring and don't want to bring multiple chargers if I don't need to.
Thanks.
It will just charge slow.

You need a compatible charger for it to fast charge. Using a regular charger wouldn't put it in that mode. I wanted to know if there was an option to turn it off with a compatible charger.
Why do you want to turn it off.
I could swear I saw something in the framework to disable fast charging but I'm not 100% sure.
I'll try to remember to keep an eye out for it after the December updates drop from Google and I have to redo my framework mods.
As far as options in the GUI go, I don't recall ever seeing any option to disable fast charging.
To answer another question, someone may want to disable fast charging to ensure their battery lasts longer (short term + long term). Or to prevent overheating when charging in the sun. And other reasons too.
You could always buy a MicroUSB to USB-C adapter. Or the phone may have come with one too now that I think about it.
Then use an older MicroUSB charger to charge your phone.
Charging via computer is only like 500mAH compared vs. 2000+mAH charging from the stock charger.
Count me amongst the club who would prefer to slow-charge my phone overnight at least.
And possibly slow my car charger down to maybe just 1000mAH to prevent overheating while the phone is docked underneath my windshield under the hot sun.

Slow wireless charge on my s20 ultra

So I'm having a problem (I think). Until now, I charged my S20ultra with its very fast charger and with my wireless anker (10W model) connected on my usb pc port. While connected on USB port, I know the charge is very slow (takes like 5+ hours from 0 to 100%) since it uses only 5W but I dont mind since it's wireless.
Today I conncted my anker wirless to a normal charger (its the one coming with samsung A51, supports fast charge). I thought that would speed the wireless charge up (since my anker is 10W but on pc usb port it can only use up to 5W), instead its still slow. Using accubattery sometimes i see the actual charge rate rarely go up to 800mA but almost all the time its about 200-400mA. My phone right now is at 54% battery so its not even at the end of a charge (at the end i know it slows the charge up with all chargers), accubattery shows 13%/hour charge which is very slow. Anyone know why this is happening? Why isnt my wireless anker using its full speed?
PS Android says its using wireless rapid charge, so its not like it doesnt recognize it. I also tried removing the cover but doesnt change at all.
Not sure what output your A51 adapter does, but for full 10W output on the Anker wireless charger it must be plugged into an adapter that does 9V-2A output and QC3 compatible.
You can find the output on the wall charger by reading the very small print on it

Thank you!! Well this might actually be it, the A51 adapter is 5V-2A or 9V-1.67A. I guess this might be the reason then... since you've been so kind and you have exactly the same wireless pad I use, can you please link me your adapter? I was thinking to buy this anker one: https://d2211byn0pk9fi.cloudfront.net/spree/products/57202/product/A2010311_ND06.jpg?1505382537 Has 9V-2A and its QC3 but just to be sure i'd rather go with the one you got since its working. Thanks a lot!
I use a Motorola 27W PD adapter that I had lying around from a previous device but that Anker one you linked should work no problem.

Is the one I use

Thank you! One last question... do you think the lack of usb-c port might be a problem? I noticed your adapter uses it but my anker pad has a microusb-usb b cable so I cant use an adapter with usb c but just the old normal usb port... was wondering if that might cause problems. I guess you use a usb c-microusb cable to connect your anker to motorola charger right? Thanks!
Not being usb C on the pad shouldn't be an issue, comes down to how much juice the wall adapter pushes out . And yes I use a USB OTG adapter (usb C male to USB A female) to work with that moto charger. I think you should be fine with that Anker charger you linked and then using the cable that came with the pad.
I only use wireless charging over night so I haven't really tested to see charge rate as I just let it go as I sleep, I'll make an effort to watch it sometime to see what actual rates I'm getting.
Hope that helps .

Thanks man! I just ordered it so tomorrow i'll check how it goes, but i'd love to hear your input as well to compare results, if everything is fine. Thanks again!

Just an update... i received the charger today, but even with this one so far it doesnt seem to change much, it charges like 12-14% per hour. If possible I'd really love to hear from you if your experience is different, I know its hard since you just leave it to charge during night, but maybe if sometimes you happen to charge it for an hour or so during day would be interesting to see if you have similiar results or a faster charge... thanks again!
This is what I'm seeing, granted I was already charged to 60% before I took this screenshot. Also I have an S20, so smaller batt than its big brothers ..
No charger (wireless or wired) will ever reach their theoretical charge rates ... I know me using an OTG adapter into my PD charger leaks power almost as much as wireless charging itself . Convenience is why I use it though..
I think for the best/fastest Qi charging, we have to get the Samsung official charging docks/pads.

Thank you man... one question, does it stay at around 1100-1200mA all the time? What I noticed is that my phone sometimes goes up to even 1400-1500mA but it stays like that for a very short time, few minutes, then rolls back to 200-400 most of the time (so very slow). If your phone is always charging at least 1000-1100mA then for sure theres something wrong with me, but i read a lot of other people seem to have problems with s20/s20+/s20ultra wireless charging, even with the samsung original 15W charger. Thanks!

i never see drop below 1000ma, is the low end... again as i charge overnight I'm not sure if it drops past that, but it sounds like you have way slower charging than me..
i still carry my anker pd charger for true fast charging
edit.. is your device snapdragon or exynos? I'm snapdragon

Mine is Exynos, and even the 20+ from this other guy having problems with samsung own 15w wireless is exynos. Would be sad if this was just another problem with exynos, not being able to charge it as fast as with SD. You've been very kind, the last thing you could do is maybe sometimes when you charge it, see if accubattery is really always at 1000mA or more, or actually drops by half if not more for you as well sometimes. I'd be happy to even have a steady 700-800mA charge, problem is that its almost always under 500, but for a very short time i DO see it going up to 1400 so it means the power provided can reach the phone, it just doesnt last, i really wonder why.
If you could check once in a while would be really appreciated. Thanks man!

It's been solid @ this rate till ~60% then drops down to 1000-1200 ... haven't seen any spikes or dips, it's pretty consistent. Don't know what to say, it's a bummer that your device seems to have issues with Qi charging. And doubly sucks if it's an issue w/ Exynos devices. Wish there was another person here who could chime in

Seems everything is in order with you. I also wish more people would jump in sharing experiences, sadly it seems not many of us charge it with wireless. Other day I was searching online and on Reddit I found some s20+ exynos user with the samsung 15w wireless original charger with the same problem, there would be almost no difference between that charger and a 5w one. The chances that its both his charger faulty and my s20 ultra as well are very low (beside my s20 with cable and 25w samsung charger goes to full in about an hour, and if it was a problem with wireless it wouldnt charge at all all the time ), so maybe the problem could actually be exynos but who knows... anyway thanks a lot for your help, lets hope someone else jumps in this thread. I was almost rdy to buy the (very expensive) 15w samsung charger but at this point im not even sure its really faster.
Update: just put on the pad to charge, was at 26%, went to 32% and accubattery showed always 1400-1500mA. Now its stuck below 500 again, temperature 36.4C so not even hot to drop. I really am gettin pissed off at this, how is it possible it charges full power for a short time and then drops.
Another update... Anker just replied to my email sent days ago about my problems with the charger, here it is:
"Recently, our various markets have feedback that this S20 cannot achieve fast charging. The specific reason is that our engineers are still testing. Because we did related tests before it was put on the shelves, there was no problem. But now it is confirmed that there is a problem, so we recommend that you do not buy new products for now."
So apparently there is a known problem, altho im not sure hes talking about s20 in general or about s20 ultra since i wrote i had an s20 ultra in my original email. Also its not clear if its just markets with exynos or those with SD as well. But it does seem that there is a problem that they know about...
