Will I still receive 'official updates' is I install a ROM? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello Guys!
I am new on this forums, actually, this is my first post, so to start of with, I want to say this to you all; Hello everybody!
I don't know if this question have been asked / answered before, but I searched for it in the search bar, and I didn't find anything, so.. I've been wanting to install a ROM on my Galaxy Nexus for a while, and I found a pretty cool looking ROM in here, which I decided to download. I haven't rooted my phone or anything yet, but I will do it as soon as I get this question answered, and my question is; If I root, and install a ROM on my Galaxy Nexus, will I still receive the 'official Android updates' from Google? Or do I have to remove the ROM, to receive the new updates?
Kind regards
Spetnazz - I'm sorry if my english is kinda bad, but I'm from Denmark, and I know my english isn't the best

First of all, hello!
I'm assuming that the ROM is custom ROM? If so, then you won't receive the over-the-air (AKA. OTA) update from Google.
If you're ONLY rooted, then you get a OTA from Google
In order to get the OTA from Google after you flashed any ROM, follow this guide

You only get the update if you're on the stock factory images. Once you start changing things, you get off of the official update train.

Yup, it's a custom ROM. Ahh okay, thanks for the fast answer! But I don't think I'll need the OTA updates anyways, if I get this custom ROM installed, since the ROM gets updated aswell
And again, thank you! I'll save this link, to if I for some reason would want to get the OTA update from Google, after I've installed the ROM on my device.

no, you will not receive google ota updates while being on a custom rom. flash google galaxy nexus factory images (tutorial here) to get them. read also this: some terms and concepts might be familiar, but read the whole thing anyway.
don't use toolkits, no matter what others say, since you still don't know what a toolkit is supposed to be doing (perhaps you won't ever have or feel the need to use one). don't trust odin more than fastboot (there's a reason why fastboot is available, even google teaches you to use it, and it's the only aosp/google supported method besides official ota update process, and not even on the regional variants).

[Q] wheres the official ics build?

I've been unable to locate the OFFICIAL version of ics for the a100. I cant receive the ota because I have the leaked rom already. Well I've got flex so that should sum it up. Reverting back to HC was a failure and only led me to bricking my device. Long story short I'm using teamwin's recovery and I am fully rooted. Just looking for the official ota and not the leaked ics...
Is there such thing?
I have been reading dozens of posts here, and accoding to it I think there is no oficial ICS because what they're pushing is and update/upgrade, not a full ROM.
So, if you want to do it manually, try a newer leaked one, or a stock one. I don´t know which one will work for you since I´m in the process to try one after another myself. At the moment, I gave up of trying GEN2 and switched to GEN1.

um...that isn't exactly factual AT ALL...
The STOCK ROM posted in the devs section is the OTA that was delivered to some tablets earlier last week. Both build numbers and image numbers have matched up. Now i'm not sure what would make this a "complete" rom to you...but a couple of things are missing from the ACER ICS that some were looking for:
ie...facelock...acer ring (which isn't even ics related per se)...
The rom that everyone is using is THE STOCK rom....not a LEAKED INCOMPLETE rom...
Well I wanted the updated rom.. was hoping someone mined it from their device with everything already on it. I'll continue to wait I suppose. Flex rom is beautiful and would probably switch back right after anyways...since I got you guys here..know of any other custom roms?

.... Read Cheeb's response again. The version posted in the developer's section (and if you search for longer than a few minutes in the dev section, you can find multiple locations to download it from) IS the updated version, that came from people's tablets.
If you wanted an actual image to flash using fastboot, etc... I guess you could build yourself one. *shrug*

If I´m wrong, why every ROM I downloaded and/or captured from my OTA´s is different? Aren´t they giving us differential upgrades?
The only ROM we can so call official would be a full ROM.

Help with Nexus update!?!

Hi guys. I'm from Brazil and the Galaxy Nexus is named Galaxy X around here, but it's the usual GSM thing that is out for AT&T. Anyway, I'm running stock ICS (4.0.2) and I checked Internet and discovered that several people are already running Jelly Bean due an OTA update by Google. But when I check if there are any updates on the phone, it just tells that it is updated. My question is: is it alright or I am missing an update? Should I root and use CM10? Will it take too long to get stable? Thank you, greetings from Brazil!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate try this and tell us what is says
A little info. You could flash a Google stock image or choose one of the numerous custom ROMs available, only you can deside which is right for you.

Only yakju and takju builds of GSM Galaxy Nexuses are updated by Google, Galaxy X has a yakjuvs build and is updated by Samsung. Samsung promissed end of August as a deadline for JB on yakjuvs (no 4.0.4 for yakjuvs).
If you don't want to wait, there are a ton of tutorials explaining how to flash a factory image, just get the jelly beans factory image and do it, but, be aware that you will loose all data in your phone (and by all, I mean ALL data, including "sdcard" data). If you don't want to lose all your data, cross your fingers and hope that Samsung deliver what they've promissed...
If you still need to ROOT and are worried about losing your data you can use the Wug's Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit.

Any specifics on whats included in the new TMO OTA UVALJ4?

Just received the OTA update, but as Im on stock, rooted, overclocked with cwm recovery, installation failed. I knew it would but tried to let it install anyway. I know its not jelly bean as samsung just announced US variants of GS3 wont get JB for quite some time. Still Im wondering if theres any word on what included in this update, and weather or not its worth me returning to pure stock to get it or even updating here once the update file is uploaded. Still kind of jaded after the last ota I received did more things that hinder my device like removing universal search and S-Voice capabilities (not that i really use S-Voice as it sucks) ... but for those who have updated, what new changes have you seen, improvments? disadvantages? new software? etc? thanks in advance!!

Software Updating

Hello , XDA community.
I have a T - Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3. Here are the current stats on the device.
Model: SGH-T999
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband: T999xxxx
Kernel: 3.0.8- 1083013
Build: IMM76D.T999
Okay , so here's my problem. My device is rooted. Stock kernel I think. I don't remember doing anything special. Just a root.
Everyday my device gets to notification to update. Everytime I choose to update , the device just reboots and goes into CWM Recovery. I really want my device to just update to JellyBean without having to reset or wipe the device neither unrooting it. Is this possible ?
I hope I was clear enough with all the information.
You won't be able to do an Over The Air update with a custom recovery. Why do you have a custom recovery with a stock rom lol? There are a few roms out there with very stock everything. Or you can use odin to get there... searching will get you where you need. Also, you are about 2 months behind everyone else lol.

Yes I am aware , I only wanted my phone rooted for a few applications. Never cared much about ROMS. Do you care to point me to a fairly decent rom , something that is quick and lag free , yet not to crazy. I am only asking you because you seem to be very updated.
Oh I am, lol. I'll give you something very plain.

Way to modded, this guy was on stock with root... I gave him stock with root. If he wants to go crazy and install a rom with custom looks, and mods to it (that alot of people like and some dislike),That's on him to research, like in my resource thread.
How to update Android 4.3 on a Galaxy S3 Tmobile SGH-T999L?
Hi there,
I´m new to the forum and I´m just a phone user. I´ve been reading different forums and messages and I think this is the correct one to post my question. If I´m wrong, please recommend me the appropriate forum if you know it . I must add that English is not my mother tongue and that I´m not familiar with terminology like flashing, mod, stock...
Having said that, here you have some background
I bought a Galaxy S3 Tmobile SGH T999L in the US in Jul 2014. I came back to my country, Spain, and as Tmobile doesn´t operate here I had to take it to a shop to unlock it and use with another supplier. The phone works reasonably well, though doesn´t totally benefit from 4G because the range of mobile frequencies used in Spain is different from the one in the US, with only partial coincidence. So it was my mistake to buy it there asuming that it would be 100% compatible here. But that´s not the issue. The issue is this:
I have recently downloaded several apps that informed me that because the O.S. is old (Android 4.3) I can´t benefit from some functionalities of the apps. .So I think I need to update to a higher version.
I have checked Tmobile US webpage where somebody asked the same question in a forum and they told him: "you flash a custome ROM (which we cannot discuss here, go to XDA developers if you are interested". And that´s why I´m here, because I have no idea of what that means, although I guess it might be related to deleting the content of the original ROM - and I suppose the O.S. is stored there- and substituting it by a higher O.S.
Below please find all technical data that I could find about my model, if this helps:
Model SGH-T999L
Base band version T999LUVUBOH1
Kernel version 3.0.31-2106417

[Q] Simple KitKat 4.4 help requested

Hello there! Im here with a request if someone can help with unlocking, rooting, clockwork mod and custom rom stuff.
Im using Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM) Maguro running on the lastest android 4.3 and since 4.4 is out from 2 weeks or so i really wanna get it on my phone even when Google wont update our gnexus with their latest os. I know the current state of the KitKat 4.4 AOSP versions is not 100% stable and mainly those gfx issues when rotating and stuff but ill be okay.
I know there are alot of guides out there but all i need is a simplified one with intel from where to start to where to end it.
There are many stuff on the internet ive already searched but somehow i dont do it because of all the info inside it.
I know to read and before my galaxy nexus i had the Sony X8 using custom rom GDX+ and it worked well everything was easy. But with my nexus now i think there are more things to do now.
All im asking is the easiest way to get it ready to flash the package and the GAPPS. (i already picked the one from here and i have the gapps on my pc) Now i need info on how to unlock and everything with clockworkmod and backup my current os.
Thanks in advance!
No offense, but if you can't follow the guides in here on how too unlock/custom recovery/root then no one in the world can.
The methods showed here are simplest as it gets!!
As a last alternative, try the GNEX TOOLKIT V11.1.0
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Hi I second this. I would also like a stable, stock, deodexed, rooted and busyboxed kitkat rom for my gsm gnexus with instructions on flashing and installing gapps. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hey ADDOriN, what's up?
First of all, I found the same problem as you... I spent some hours trying to understand the whole process and honestly didn't reach my goal... The tutorial pointed out by the friend t1.8matt is great and easy, but if you don't feel confartable yet, you can try to follow the steps on youtube video called "How To Root Android 4.3 On the galaxy nexus" made by Manley (sorry, but as a noob, I can't post the link)
Some considerations about:
- the tutorial uses CWM but depending on the version of 4.4, you should use TWRP... The process to apply the image file is the same, differing only in root step
- if your bootloader is locked, in the moment you unlock it, all your data will be erased, so a backup is highly recommended
The GNex Toolkit 11.1.0 quoted by the friend wysefreakz is easier than made everything by hand, but honestly, I didn't find an information if it is or isn't compatible with 4.3 version, so I chose to the "hand-made" method.
Just to say, I used custom firmwares on my old Defy and made the same for a Galaxy S, but I found some doubts to gnexus (even had converted it from yakjuvs to yakju in the past)
I hope I can help you
I would not use a toolkit, as pointed out by many experienced users, they can do more harm than good. Not always the case but it is possible. I you get the android SDK setup on your computer, its actually not hard using adb and fastboot once you learn the commands. There are plenty of tutorials out there to help you with getting it setup and learning about adb and fastboot.
@leocasarin, @t1.8matt, @wisefreakz Thank you guys!
Actually there is no problem for me is to follow slowly the tutorials here and there. I made this thread to ask if there is something i didnt found my rolling on the forums or the internet as general. @t1.8matt yes the tutorial you give me is maybe the one ill follow. @leocasarin i will follow the ideas you said to me and im really thankful.
NINJA EDIT: I just used the video tutorial posted from @leocasarin and i completed everything and i now have KitKat 4.4! KUDOS FOR YOU MATE <3
