3 quick noob questions about rooting.

Ok, i had a G1 & i never rooted it, now i have the the Desire & havent bothered rooting it as i think Android seems to be cool from stock.
But theres a few apps i want to use that require root access to use, so my 3 questions are.
1, if i root my Desire do i have to install a different rom? As i like the way the stock Android runs
2, is there a sort of "1 click root" like the iphone jailbreak, as ive seen apps like "easy root" that claim it instantly roots your phone, bit then on here people talk about gold cards ect...
3, if i do root the Desire, will i still get the network pushed OTA updates? As im on vodafone & they havent pushed 2.2 out yet so i want to get it from them, also if i will get them, when i update will it un-root my phone like iphones updatespatch jailbreaks.
Thanks in advance for replys, as i said im not interested in usijg custom/different roms, i only want to use apps that require root access, like cache cleaners ect... but i still want the stock android + sence with my OTA updates.

1. there are rooted version of the stock ROM available, check the Dev forum

3. No you won't get it, and returning to stock should you want to will obviously remove root. It's best to get your stock Vodafone ROM to have for warranty reasons...

[Q] Motorola defy update and root

I have a motorola defy with android 2.1 eclair(2.1-update1). and motoblur version 2.21.0.MB525.Retail.en.GB. and its been a while since the 2.2 update is out. bt when i goto system updates in the settings menu and search for updates, i am told that no update is available. i wanna know y. and i dont know any other way to update my device. kindly show me how to update.
Another thing is that i thought of rooting my device but i didnt find any benefits for me to root.
I wanna know that if i root my device. will i loose motoblur? because i really like it. and if rooting can delete motoblur. if i unroot it, will i get motoblur back?
i am really lookin forward for help.
my cousin has a t-mobile version and he has successfully updated his device. and its faster and smoother than mine. so i really need help.

OTA update availability is dependent on your carrier, check the moto website for your region instead.
Root just enhances rights but won't delete motoblur or anything. If don't see a need to root, you don't need to root naturally.

CM7 is a custom rom that can be run on the Defy, it is very fast, and has a new feel. Look it up on youtube!
Root your device using SuperOneClick. Much easier.

if you feel there is no need to root, and happy with your ROM, then why root? no need to root just because the world roots their phone. if you feel that you need to maximise your phone potential, rooting is the way to go, but you gotta be more hardworking and learn up more about rooting and stuffs before doing it

cm7 is snappy but there isnt any motoblur. so no contacts frm facebook. no facebook integration well i thnk i'll root first.

The first google search result for "superoneclick" is just what you are looking for..

I waited for so long for the 2.2 update for the defy couldn't resist any longer so i updated to the SEA-15 couldn't be happier its nice and stable haven't had any troubles so far i have used the cm7 i loved that to but never could get the market i have installed gapps but still never showed.

yes, CM7 is far better than motoblur crap.
and it's gingerbread already.

do i need to root if want to install that cm7?
and where can i download the latest cm7?

I know there are many posts on this topic .. I've been reading whole night last night but I couldn't find the answer... tried so many things - Z4root, super 1 click root and etc. but I can't get my phone to root. In z4root it just goes back to home screen some time after I start the program and the phone is not rooted. In Superoneclick it says Failed at the end after being unable to push the busybox or whatever its name was.. I just updated my phone about a week or so ago cause I thought 22 is out.. instead I got this lazy update for 21 which now I see could be the reason the phone can't root. I should've rooted it earlier anyway here are my specs:

Anyone can offer a way to root that is reversible? I don't wanna root If I'm gonna be unable to unroot it later. It probably won't have problems with the root and after (when i make a backup) but my phone is only 6 months old and I have 1.5 yrs left warranty.. and I'm like 99% sure that if they see the phone is rooted they're gonna void my warranty. Again sorry for the duplicate thread but again I read so many threads and I couldn't find a way to root it.. also if you wanna know the reason I decided to root - ad-hoc. I just got a wireless adapter and realized android doesn't work with ad-hoc but then I saw that there is a fix.. still this fix requires rooted phone. ANd that's it

Well.. the easiest method is to update to 2.2 and then root with SuperOneClick. SHould work and is reversible. Plus, the 2.2 Update is getting rolled out anyway.
If you don't wanna update, you might want to give a full wipe a try.

I wanna update it's just that the 2.2 is not out yet for my phone. Still I tried with factory reset and still can't root.. I guess it's this update. I hope it's gonna be able to root at 2.2 update.. cause I don't wanna flash non-factory ROMs, just wanted to get root privileges.

Well.. it is available for your phone. You have a Defy.
For me, at last a fresh .sbf flash with RSD Lite solves every problem. But it is on your behalf, if you wanna flash a rom yourself or not.

Thing is I don't want to flash it I want a stock regular rom update from Motorola :/

Me too bt 2.2 is only available for t mobile.

I have a Tmo Defy also and updated to the stock 2.2...
I personally rooted using GingerBreak.apk which was very easy to do and from there i downloaded Root Explorer and weeded out alot of the MotoBlur crap that was slowing down the phone...
Then i downloaded Milestone Overclock from the market and SetCPU and overclocked it to be running as a 1GHZ speed and after getting rid of the MotoBlur crap im easily getting 35 hours of battery life on one charge and it is sooo much quicker to respond to everything..
My answer to why root the phone is to make it the phone that it should be without the drag of all the other junk..
But thats just my opinion..

Hi all. Super-happy T889 owner (since zero-day), and would be grateful for any advice with some basic questions. Been following and searching bot this and the N7100 "umbrella" thread, so thanks in advance for any help.
My experience with root is essentially CWM and Titanium Backup (no custom kernals/ROMs). I rooted my Note1 (int'l unlocked) but never ventured beyond 2.3.6 and LC1 because (i) it wasn't my primary phone and (ii) fear. My main phone on Verizon was also rooted, but more like rooted and potatoed. I switched from VZ to Tmo for the T889 and I love it. I kind of want to root even if just for CWM and Titanium, but the pure stock experience is stable and fast, and the bloatware from Tmo is not remotely close to VZ. And I'm fairly hopeful that we'll get the multi-window via OTA update.
Questions - Would root provide any fundamental performance improvements with CPU/GPU/memory usage/general kick-assery on this device?
Are others waiting to see how the multi-screen updates play out?
Am I being overly cautious because VZ made things so difficult?
Is it accurate that the "disable" capability in Jelly Bean provides some native ability to freeze applications?

Root not do any performance , only allow root app do tweak and completely control your phone which without root you can't do ( rom tool box , titanium back up,ram manger app ...etc ).
If you try disable APP with native option come with phone, APP will come back running.( titanium backup can permenant disable,backup,restore,uninstall APP system app which without root can't do).
Over caution is good , if you go right direction then why should you worry for
If you only plan to root but keep close to stock as possible .you can try Chaifire auto root ( stock recovery include not custom CWM & remember never flash anything from stock recovery) .
About multi screen, I hope Developer will add into there custom rom.

with setcpu you can change the governor to performance and your phone will get 6500 in quadrant lol or you can underclock it to 1ghz and stock governor to save a lot of battery power, i had my screen on for 6 hours and 30 minutes and still had 30% battery and the performance was still great
with titanium backup delete all the garbage they added to the phone

Yeah. I decided to root with CF-Auto-Root and that was about as painless as could be. But I don't see/remember how to access CWM. Is that a separate download? CF's root guide doesn't seem to reference CWM.

auto root keeps everything stock it just roots the phone to get CWM you need to install it separately, i dont have it yet i just kept it stock

You can use the galaxy note2 toolbox to install CWM, but unless you're flashing alternative ROMS/KERNELS/MODS you dont need it.
To my knowledge, if you are rooted you cant get OTA updates normally. However if you just keep reading these forums or other tmonews sites, you'll here about the multiwindow updates and how to install. Alternatively, a dev will probably find out how to make a Tmo compatible ROM with the N7100 sw features built in before we get an update from Tmo...

Hi All
Let me start with few good things here You guys are amazing helping and providing tweaks for us:good:
I am Nexus user. I have Installed Custom Recovery, Flashed ROMs and rooted my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. This is my First Samsung Tablet. I have waited enough for Nexus 10 (2). I finally bought SM-P600.
I was trying to find an Guide with links for Unlocking bootloader and Updating firmware and then flash Custom recovery for this but coudnt figure it out
I have been reading lots of things about Knox and counters related to it.
Can anyone Please help me find answers straight.
1) Any Rooting and Custom Recovery tools or ADB commands without Hitting the KNOX counter {Just In case IF I wanted to return it} If not then which one you recommend ?
By the Way I found few posts related to Rooting Which has confused me more. I used to use Chainfire SUROOT:

2) If I Root and want to use Stock ROM of SM-P600 will all apps work normally or any known issues with it ?
3) Is Odin any tool which everyone is taking about ? I am not sure about it Can you provide any links to its dev for more info. Found it about in a Post to return to STOCK ?
4) Are these ROMS and apps Odexed or Deodexed ROM?
5) Any Dependencies for Firmware and with any of the above questions. I mean In Universal Root I saw they were talking about certain version of firmware. Also Should I update the latest firmware and do a Nandriod backup ?
6) Also read that once KNOX counter goes up, I wont get any OTA ? My Plan is I will use it till next Nexus and will give it to parents with stock ROM. If I am using I can always use an Custom Rom and get updates. But for parents I want to return it to stock so that they can easily update when OTA is available.
I would like to make one more suggestion to MOD's Please Pin the Guides like the Rooting and stuff like Return to Stock which are quite common and useful so that its easy for newbies( aka for Samsung) like me.

1. This is not really a single question with a single answer I think vaguely what you are asking is if you can root without tripping knox?
Nope. Not at this time.
2. If you use CF-Auto-Root you'll likely find that the vast majority of applications keep working without issue. Of those that don't, a handful you can manage back to a working state with various tweaks, but there are a few that are probably gone for good. You can basically kiss all the Samsung hub apps goodbye, these will start claiming they are not supported in your country even if they were working perfectly prior to rooting, some may continue working for a short time after but eventually something leaks and your access is cut. Screen mirroring will no longer work though this can be fixed with a small zip file flash. OTA updates are also gone.
Forget all the talk about 'triangle away' fixing any of this, it hasn't for me.
3. Odin is a tool that is able to flash firmware files or parts thereof to your device. Heimdall is an alternative suite of applications, while there is a GUI for it, it seems fairly hit and miss on Linux these days, I've never had much luck with it, on the other hand the command line tools work perfectly fine.
Once you trip Knox, there's no turning back! You won't lose your warranty in any meaningful way, but you may end up having to argue about it and drag in government regulators to get your tablet repaired free of charge depending on the dealer response.
4. I don't think this is particularly relevant to the SM-P600. My subjective opinion would be to stick with the bog standard Samsung ROM. If you want cool themes there are a multitude of launchers, Xposed takes care most other things you might ever care to tweak.
5. You have one choice. CF-Auto-Root. Backups are healthy.
6. True, but you'll still be able to flash via Odin so it doesn't really mean much of anything. Once you trip Knox, you can also kiss OTA updates goodbye as well.

How are you flashing TWRP, through recovery or Odin?

Want STOCK ROOT for Note 2 with 4.4.2 after OTA from AT&T

I am looking to just get ROOT without any changes in the stock kernel.
I don't want the weird name sounding ROM's or any of that.
Just some way to get root so I can load Titanium Backup and FREEZE the AT&T bloatware
I just go the OTA today (11/14/14) when I turned my phone on. It's the AT&T SGH-I317
and now say

So is there a quick and easy way to do this?
I use a iMac BUT I can boot into Windows 7 Ultimate also (which from rooting phones before I usually always go that route).
Any help/directions would be appreciated.
Also this, who comes up with those weird names for different ROM's that NEVER really explain, in plain old English, what they do?
I can't (or don't want to) learn the syntax lingo used to find a working ROM that does just a simple thing, give you ROOT, even after reboots/yank battery/etc.
Maybe a one-click solution?

any confirmation that CF root works on 4.4.2 with NJ1 OTA update/

as soon as someone gets a root to stick
and I mean just standard, stock adding su to the mix
post the steps as to how you did it
a one click root would of course be the best......
but at least tell us how you did it, and screen shots to show would help too.
