[Q] ILWT-CM7-13-06-2012 screen blank issue - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
first of all great work on the XDA forum and maintaining the website!
Second, great work on all developers for creating and maintaining roms and also replying to users!
Im a steady user of the ILWT CM7 rom on my Desire Z.
But in every version i ever used im still experiencing one issue.
When in a call or when someone hangs up a call my screen stays black.
I can try the power button or de trackball wake but my screen stays black.
The only way to get my screen back(most of the time) is to slide out my keyboard.
Is this a known issue and if so, how could this be fixed?
Since im a new user who registered to this forum im unable to post in the devolopers section.
Any help would be appriciated.
One side note, excuse my bad english(if applicable) im a dutch user.
Thanks for the help!
Regards Enumo

Are you wiping between versions?

I've also had issues with the ILWT CM7 rom.
However chec if you've wiped data and dalvik cache (both) before flashing.

Yes i always whipe en clear cache and also format and repartion all partions. I whipe and clear multiple times before reinstall. Just now installed g2 light version and here it also seems an issue. Any ideas?

If you're overclocking what's your minimum clock speed in something like setcpu?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app

I use the default values. Ilwt rom has it 365 mhz range. G2 light doesn't have overclock as default. So at the moment im not overclocking.
Also on a ics rom it has the same issue.

I have the pershoot v1.2 running on euro DZ with stock sense since yesterday.
I can confirm : no issues whatsoever.
WiFi, bluetooth, FM-radio, GPS, Overclocking to > 1.5GHz all working perfect.
Are these kernels compatible with the US T-mobile G2 Stock ROM? Sorry i just need to clear it out of my way. thank you
Which kernel is included with the Virtuous 0.8 by default?

1. Version 0.8.0
4. Default kernel switched to Pershoot (based off latest sources from 12/13/2010). (Thanks: Pershoot, Cyanogen Project).

So if you like the kernels and are planning to donate, please make sure you donate to them and not us. The work we've done and continue to do to assure Sense/HTC compatibility is minuscule in comparison to the upstream work by the actual maintainers.

I don't use Sense myself, but I think it's important that the Virtuous team is recognized for all THEIR hardwork. As humble as you are in your post, you & your team deserve recognition for your efforts too.
Your contributions are definitely not without merit and appreciated by many, many people. You guys are important in your own way for making the community (G2/DZ & beyond) what it is, so thank YOU for your hard work.
BlueTooth won't turn on for G2 Stock ROM with both Pershoot and Cyanogen Kernels
Thanks for the work though.

No. Just Htc sense-based roms.
Oh wow, thank you so much for this.

Deleting my post. I believe the ramdisk needs to be different.
Hi.
Excuse my ignorance, but trying to find out how to update stock kernel to this.
Tried searching, but rather new to Android and there seems to be a lot of varuois advise.
Am I to understand that all I need to do is download for example the pershot kernel, put it on my SD and make a fastboot update? Since it contains a "boot.img"
Or is ADB involved?
Simply put, how would I upgrade my "old" stock kernel?
And before upgrading, how would I go ahead and backup my old. Nandroid?
Thanks for your time.
If your sig is current, then your first step should be to S-Off. Check one of the stickies.
Then the easiest way to go about updating the Kernel/doing a backup would be to grab Rom Manager off the Market and flashing ClockworkMod.
Thanks alot for the kernals everything works on desire z fine fm radio etc..
the only problem i am having is the phone freezes if i set the max fre over 1094 mhz on set cpu it allows over clocking to over 1400 mhz right? well i am a proper noob though so maybe i am doing something wrong? i need to change a setting perhaps? or maybe this kernal is not for overclocking ?
thanks
or maybe i am just unlucky and 1094 mhz is the max my phones cpu can handle since every cpu is unique?
Random black-screen on wake-up
Tried both 1.2 and 1.3, same problem.
The issue is: When I wake up my phone from sleeping( either using Power Button or D-Pad), I have random chance to get a black screen. It's special, unlike those "freeze black-screen", the "home,MENU,Back,Search" buttons below the screen light up normally, open the keyboard and the backlight will turn on too ,but not the screen, it just remain black.
When I press the PowerButton again, the screen light up for about 0.1s (I can see the lock screen) then back to sleep.
Sometimes I have to press the Powerbutton several times get the screen on. but sometimes it works just fine.
I have no problem with the "Unmodified kernel" from ROM Manager, but when using these two kernels, it happens again.
Is there any solution or similar case?
Just installed the CM kernel on my DZ with stock sense rom. Everything seems to work perfectly. Setcpu works great with it. I can OC to 1.5ghz with small steps.
What are the difference in between the kernels??
Using 1.3 atm and no problems at all whatsoever. However I would like to know the differences in between kernels. Does anyone know?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I can confirm this black screen on wake up as reported by jzhyok while I am test running right now the CM 1.3 kernel on my german DZ with unmodified Sense ROM, perm root, s-off.
I used setcpu with 1.5ghz and 1.2ghz with same results, just in case this could make a difference.
One more thing. My DZ instantly froze when I changed the governor from on demand to smartass in setcpu while I was at 1.5ghz with this CM 1.3 kernel, so I removed battery and now stay with the on demand governor.
Any fix for this anoying black screen wake up problem and any hint for the smartass governor? Which governor would be better, on demand or smartass?

[Q] Volume HTC DHD

Hi everybody,
Maybe this is an old question but i couldn't find it:
Is there a way to change the volumesettings?
The volume is so soft
Everything is on the loudest but stil so soft.
Before the HTC desire HD i had a windowsphone (Omnia 1900) and there was a code for. Then you could change the volume in the system of the phone.
Hope you can read my bad english and thanx
There is app called dsp manager with volume increase patch. Try to search..
P.s. If you use this patch, be aware, your battery life will be shorter.

Try flashing leedroids new kernels, he has increased the global volume by 20%

You can also try flashing Buzz Sense kernel or a custom ROM which uses LeeDroid or Buzz Sense kernel. I've flashed Revolution HD and Buzz Sense kernel on my phone and the experience has definitely improved.
Flash Buzz or LeeDroid kernel and you should be set, volume is much nicer now when talking on the phone. The other day I actually have to turn it down that was a first lol
Thanks for the responds
However, i'm new at this and never worked with roms and kernels
Sooooo....you think it's a smart thing to try as a newbie

Unique Question - For Devs (wifi only evo 4g roms?)

Hey everyone!
Just got an EVO the other day and I have a unique situation.
I'm not utilizing a carrier, I bought this phone from Craigslist, works great, utilizing google voice and groove ip for sms/phone with Verizon Mobile Hotspot for internet via wifi/tether.
That said... I'm curious about phones with similar hardware and flashing roms/kernels.
Is the radio in control of my wifi?
What I mean is... is it possible to flash other roms from other parts of XDA with similar hardware, such as the Nexus One? The research I did tells me they have basically the same hardware so I was curious.
My main reason? I am utilizing CM7 but unless I missed something somewhere, there isn't really an AOSP rom for this phone that is UV/OC? I've seen the sense ones but that's it.
Just curious what you guys might make of my situation and suggestions you may have for me? I almost feel like I'm in unchartered waters lol. Just need wifi to work so I can tether to my hotspot and of course the speaker/mic to work for calls, then it's just a matter of software/apps etc...
Any ideas, suggestions or questions are welcomed. Thanks!

Very insightful, thank you so much.
I guess I should note. I'm not an idiot... I just don't understand development inside and out... If you said "it won't work because the flux capacitor won't jolt to 1.21 jiggawatts" (that's a Jay-Z measured watt) then I would take that, but your response was very unwarranted.
Again, thanks for the input.
If any DEVS have an educated answer I would be greatly appreciative
If you flash a rom from another phone, you will either get booloops (if you're lucky) or a very nice paperweight / brick.
Many of the roms in the evo dev section are ports from other devices that take months to complete so they are safe to use or even boot on an evo.
So to reiterate, don't do it.

I'm a Sense guy, and I'm assuming you want AOSP so I'll tell you what I run when I do run AOSP, it never fails me
Deck's ROM or MIUI with Tiamat 4.1.0 SBC kernel
The kernel would be in charge of UV/OC and Wi-Fi
Use Amon Ra as recovery
Wipe everything except for SD card twice
Flash ROM
Navigate to mounts menu and mount everything except for SDext
Flash kernel
Flash Vipermod (allows undervolt)
Reboot.
Reboot.
Go to terminal and type:
su
vipermod
Choose how much you want to undervolt. And usually I undervolt by -50
Type in 10 to save changes.
Reboot.
I almost always underclock. To OC/UC, go Settings-Advanced Settings for Deck's and set at boot or Download No Frills CPU for MIUI (have to go to Superuser app and hit menu button and allow root)
Do not flash anything from a different phone... Mount points are different, different kernels and it would be an absolute mess

[Q] Are the relatively newer ROMS too heavy for Desire Z ?

Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM
just full wipe and reflash the rom
d_gkal said:

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Is there any other thing I can try apart from logcat ? I installed Watchdog a few hours ago, but so far it hasn't reported anything out of the way ..
What does have ext partitions do ? How does that speed up the OS ?
Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread: http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that

I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.

SetCpu makes my HOX shutdown failure!?

Hey Mates,
After rooting my phone and installing SetCPU to underclock it so as to save some battery time..I created Screen OFF profile and a Battery level profile..
It works fine for some time(like a few hrs) but after that my phone goes down...I cant even power on it by simply holding the power button!
It doesnt show up anything while I do that..
I have to hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds so it makes a hard power on by blinking the Capacitive buttons On and Off!!
SetCPU worked very fine on my HTC Wildfire S...but donno why is it troubling me in HOX!
Has anyone else faced this problem? or what do u think is the problem and what would be an ideal solution?
Help would be greatly appreciated!!
Dont face this with setcpu, and there is not much info about your phone rom. But pls try trickster or no-frill softs to see if problem's gone or not. Then, we'll have more info for solution.
In case of customs rom, go searching in the rom thread if any similar problem?
Alternatively, reflashing rom might clear the issue.

oops sorry about that!
Im using a Stock Rom JellyBean with recent Sense 5 update..
Yeah...as u suggested been using No Frills for the whole day..no sign of Shutdown of Restart so far...and its working fine..
So..I guess SetCpu is the culprit...but I really like the profile feature in it..I dont think even the latest version of No Frills has such..
Would you suggest any app with that feature?? Or a solution for SetCpu with my current provided information?
Help would be great

- No-frills cpu has no profile function, but i'd prefer the soft as it's very light (small size) and battery friendly (not running on background). I can simply open nofrill to change when needed. Also, profiles are not really in frequent usage (the stock rom can manage battery effectively enough, and profiles even consume battery during monitoring the "if" conditions to be matched for activation).
- If you like profiles, go with setcpu. Try to uninstall and reinstall to see if it works. If not, try previous setcpu versions. Worst case, try reflash stock rom if no luck. My phone is also on stock 4.2.2 and no problem with setcpu so far.
- Trickster is more powerful with lots of settings to play with, but requires you more knowlegde to make the best out of it.

How to reflash a Stock ROM? Custom Rom flashing is the thing I know ..but this is new..
And would changing kernel helps? If I should try whats a stable for HOX?

Flashing stock roms are similar to stock: download rom and flash with custom recovery. But flashing stock rom is just one of some other ways to return phone to stock (restore nandroid backup, running ruu, flashing ota update zip..)
You can find more details on Sticky post -general info of htc one x, including kernels and many interesting stuffs (mod, scripts...) if you want to go deeper.
