Time Travel, Samsung-style - Samsung Captivate Glide

It seems Samsung has realized their stupidity in releasing a software update for the Captivate Glide where the keyboard lights don't work and they pulled the plug on the I927UCLH2 update. They have released a new update, I927UCKL1 based on, wait for it... Gingerbread 2.3.6!!!

I would assume this is virtually identical to the previous 2.3.6 build, and is released as an update for the people who have a fairly unusable 4.0.4 device at the moment. The average user isn't able to roll back to GB to have a fully working phone, so they release an "update" for people to use until they fix the serious issues in ICS.

I think it's for people who had not upgraded to ICS are were still in the original GB 2.3.5 firmware. If you upgraded to the ICS build, connecting your phone to Kies will tell you that your phone does not support firmware updates through Kies.

Neither of the ICS ROMs available are official releases. The situation is quite the opposite to what you posit -- they KNOW there's problems with their ICS ROMs and have justifiably delayed the release. What we have are leaks from their development process, and they're giving us a rare glimpse into the current state of development and why it's taking so long.
-E- Furthermore, we had UCKL1 *LONG* before UCLG9 was leaked. You're getting your order of events seriously screwed up.

Actually Samsung released an OFFICIAL update but pulled it. Research before you post.

I would not be surprised if Samsung played it this way on purpose. Most smartphone owners aren't as eager for updates as we are, as long as the phone works.
I'm absolutely sure Samsung monitors this board and other places online, so it may very well be they released the previous update so we would test it for them. Why? Because we're happy to get the update, even with bugs. We're happier than having to wait longer, in any case. Secondly, we'll point out the most annoying bugs for them the fastest, because we're the actual users. And, of course, we're for free...!
It's one of the aspects of the internet big corporations DO love!

You have a really good point, would save them a lot of money. Wouldn't surprise me either if that's what they did. Either way, I'm not updating to official release when its available again anyway.

The LH2 build was released as the official ICS update on September 7 but was pulled out a week later. Samsung even took out their upgrade instructions, replaced with a message telling users the update has been put on hold. I know at xda-developers we can find workarounds for almost any bug, including the broken keyboard lights on the LH2 update but the truth is not everybody comes to xda-developers and/or is comfortable with custom flashing.
I couldn't resist the urge to write both Samsung and AT&T about this update. Can you imagine them releasing an update for the Galaxy Note where the stylus doesn't work? Well, as a software tester myself (that's how I make a living though not in the mobile field), I couldn't believe something as basic and essential to the Captivate Glide's reason for existence as is sliding open the keyboard and checking out the backlight, could slip through the cracks both at Samsung and at AT&T. I was especially harsh with the people at AT&T when I wrote to them. If AT&T gets a software build that does not block free tethering, or doesn't have the requested bloatware or doesn't make it so said bloatware can't be uninstalled by the user, AT&T would have rejected the build and make Samsung fix the software. But it was way too taxing on AT&T's software testing schedule to slide open the keyboard and notice that the backlight wasn't working.
The sad part is, a tester probably did report the problem and yet some genius in upper management decided to release the software after all.

It is likely it was not tested on the Glide besides booting it to make sure it worked. The code for the keyboard backlight isn't just buggy, _it doesn't exist_. They clearly just compiled something for a similar model, such as the Gaalxy R and then called it good.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda premium

Big screw up on AT&T's part. I'm really surprised at Samsung for not at least noticing the backlight not working. Meh, I don't care honestly. CWM and XDA are all I need honestly.

I have to say i really agree with Evil Alex. Many of us have been anxious and very excited to receive the update. I was holding off for an 'official' and it happened finally but I was pretty butthurt over the lack of the light up keyboard when i was walking down the street at 10pm and couldn't see my buttons! I'm unable to contribute yet so I'm just being patient and figure I'll await for XDA pros to muster up some new custom roms from the leak, or even eventually an official. With the troubles i'm having with ICS even after wiping everything, I guess i'll eat gingerbead again for a while

It's a shame . I don't understand. The samsung just had to win with this situation. Everyone knows that the best beta testers are the people of XDA.
Now what do I do with my life without one (or five) firmware a month to test: '(
Hope it's not true
Actually there is a newer version: The official JM1 which is not to be confused with the inofficial JM1
This Version is said to sport some updates over the most current inofficial 2.1 JM5 build.
There is a trick getting it which involves flashing the phone back to JF3 and then getting an update via Kies by accessing a test mode (done by: Ctrl+Alt+u+p)
There is a german thread visable here: http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-ha...ielle-update-jm1-jetzt-schon-zu-bekommen.html
I for one am sticking to JP3. It's not the smoothest but definatly the most good looking and I am hoping for a new 2.2 build in the near future. The browser is just sooo much better than eclair!
i am sure sammy didnt want any very "young" firmwares to leak to the public. i am sure that we will get a leak by the end of the month, but a pretty much almost ready for launch one. they prolly want to take care of good implementaion of froyo features ( JIT mailnly) before anything goes out, even if leaked.
I am having withdrawal effects from not flashing any firmwares... IT'S BEEN ALMOST 2 WEEKS SINCE MY LAST FLASH! lol I'd never gone so long without a flash since I got the phone. I do have to say that JM5 with the ext2 lag fix works very well and I don't plan on flashing unless I see people getting significant improvements, or a stable froyo firmware. I think Sammy should leak and let us point out the bugs haha, even if it's early builds...
yeah what's with the lack of leaks firmwares seriously with my touch HD I was flashing every other day Not having new firmware to flash is really "unusual" for me. I want firmwares
Someone claims to have upgraded to JM6 through kies. This would be great as it would be the newest official firmware I think.

[Q] "Your device is up to date" error. Anyone know what the heck is going on?
So here it is, four days after the ICS update was "released" and I still have not gotten an update. My A100 used to give the "network coverage is currently poor" message when checking for updates. Acer acknowledged this error, and now my device says "your device is up to date". It obviously is not. Has ANYONE heard anything from the ghost town that is Acer's support? I just feel like I'm being left out and Acer couldn't care less. They need to make a statement about this.. Or maybe they have and I missed it somehow. Anyway, could someone please offer some Insight?
Or at least, it would be (oddly) comforting to know that other people are experiencing this.
Misery loves company. My A100 is also "up to date" still on Honeycomb. At least there is hope, my phone will never get ICS (Galaxy S 4G)
have you guys flashed a rom to it? or is it stock?
Im just stock, trying to do it by the books, although acers proverbial book appears to be written in latin.

ICS update
I flashed to the leaked version of ICS about a month ago. I also get the "Device is up to date" message when I try to update. Is there something I need to do since I have the leaked, unofficial release on my tab?
I am in the "I am running Stock, never even rooted the thing, and still no ICS update" boat.
Though in fairness the Acer support page says the rollout is in stages and that it would take a full week for the rollout to be complete. I am not going to officially panic until next Monday (May 7th).
truthfully it is very easy to just flash the new stock ROM. I would just go that route and if you flashed a prereleased ROM. I don't believe you will get an update. Just make sure that you put it in the correct place is the biggest mistake.
Am I the only one who's just running 3.2 ? I did a factory reset and it went back to 3.2, where as before I had 3.2.1
weird
GEN2 & PA_CA owners
Folks,
You are not alone. Many A100s aren't receiving ICS.. Mostly GEN2 with 3.2 build doesn't get any updates from Acer...same for some PA_CA builds..
Acer asked some of the GEN2s to be shipped for a manual update.. but they are not openly admitting the issue with GEN2 builds..
You have two options.
1. If you prefer to get the ICS from Acer, Flash your device to GEN1-3.2.1 and you will get the ICS update. I used this method and my A100 is on ICS now. Refer the Page 3, Post 25+ on the below thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623543&page=3
2. You can also directly Flash to Leaked final ICS from acer... below thread has all of them. go for 012 ICS.

Yep no doubt. I was flat out told by Acer they have had issues with pushing OTA updates to some Gen2, and asked me to ship my A100 in to have it updated...right... So I used the leaks, and now Im on FlexReaper no regrets.
I like my tablet nice hardware for the price IMO, but the firmware support from Acer sucks big sweaty donkey balls.
Make sure that your Version is 3.2.1 and not 3.2.1+ like I had. I flashed the update I got from acertablet forums, which I think they found it here, and I then had 3.2.1 and then 2 updates later I am running 4.0.3.
I shouldn't have to do any of that S***. I'm probably just going to sell this thing, because acer is filled with a-holes. GTFO Acer.
This really is embarassing on Acer's part. I was excited to get ICS but the A100 is not my primary tablet and I don't really feel like bothering with flashing it myself. We've gotten OTA updates before with no problem, why can't they make this one work?
Thanks XDA!
I too have been trying to do the official update on my generation 2 stock unrooted or modified A100. A couple of days ago I got the 3.2.1 update but nothing else. I kept going to settings checking for the update and it always came back with the software up to date message. Today I got so fed up with it that I reverted back to pre-update 3.2 by following a thread in this forum and re-ran the update check...Bingo! it updated twice. Now I have a smooth running ICS A100. Don't wait for Acer! Something is wrong with the way this Tablet checks for the update!
Just got the update!!!!!! ..for 3.2.1...............
hope ICS is to follow.
ICS
I just got the update of OTA ICS after 3 updates, and I was on Android 3.2.1 gen2.

Well considering the gs3 drops tomorrow, you would be right. But its not sprint alone holding it up, Samsung is trying to fix the brick bug in the kernel before releasing so they don't end up with 1 million bricked devices from performing a factory reset. Idk about you but I'd rather wait for something that works right and is stable than rush into something that could potentially destroy my device.

Preorders I think are still on time a friend of mine got his tracking number for his and it's scheduled for delivery tomorrow. The delay on the ICS was cuz they found the brick bug and it can even brick from a factory reset in settings so it wasn't safe to release into the wild yet, especially since it would be samsungs fault and they would have to eat the cost on every device bricked, that would be financial suicide since it affects even unrooted devices and sprints go to fix is a factory reset. Imagine how many bricks would pour in in the first few days alone, let alone the period of time it took to push out a fix for it. I'm not in a huge rush for the ota tho since I prefer AOSP, I just want the damn kernel source like NAOW. That's the only thing I'm impatient for. But for now I can survive, its not like we don't have plenty of development to hold us while we wait it will come soon enough, I'm just glad for once they aren't rushing out firmware with issues like the initial release of the et4g with the LoS bug. Samsung is actually trying to step up their development image and compete with other manufacturers a little more compared to previously. They have come a long way since I had the intercept, that thing was flaky as hell and never made it past froyo.

All ICS kernels so far have had the brick bug, its tied to MMC_erase_cap I believe is the string that causes the write error that damages the eMMC chip by writing to a partition that's not supposed to be written to.

I'm rocking a 10.1 gt I bought on launch day. I've been running cm9 without a working camera for months.
I really don't understand the constant hand wringing over updates. The ICS ota will be here when its ready.
Its not like this phone just launched and it's going to be stuck on GB.
We have an outstanding development community that is providing us with a plethora of ROMs.
Most of the people clamoring for source just want a signature that says, "Rockingasupercoolkernelbro."
AT&T and T-Mobile have a 4.0.3 update with many of the same or more bugs. Who cares?
Our update will be here when it's ready. Enjoy the leaks and tremendous ROMs that we are lucky to have for the time being.
If the current kernels aren't giving you enough display time then invest in a spare battery and reevaluate what's important in your life.

Ehh I don't have 4g in my area and where I get 4g I'm not there much so going to network settings to turn it on isn't a huge deal for me. Although if i had 4g I'd probably just make a shortcut to the setting with anycut or something similar. I'm pretty picky too that's why whenever I try to go back to GB a few small things missing make it seem so lacking even tho they are minor things, like the webos recent apps, the customization of the dropdown and lockscreen and a few other little settings/customizations that I always seem to crave when I'm on GB. I go back to a GB backup every now and then to update prl and profile and i can never stay on more than an hour or so b4 I'm running back to one of my AOkP backups

[Q] Should I upgrade to official ICS?

Hi there,
I'm using an unrooted Samsung Captivate Glide which is still on 2.3.
Before I go about upgrading it to the official ICS ROM, I wanted to ask if it's worth doing? Does the official ICS for the Glide have any problems which do not exist in Gingerbread?

It locked my Rogers phone, to AT&T I'm assuming. Too much hassle to root and then unlock via app so about to buy a code off ebay, If you're on AT&T you should be fine, as long you update to the latest UCLJ3 rom.

Oh dear ... I'm in the UK using my unlocked AT&T handset on the Three network!
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go via the eBay route if it does lock. Is there anything else to be aware of? I heard that the GPS is messed up.
Personally, I found the stock browser in ICS to be a little lacking. I don't know if it was particular to my phone or not, but I found it would lock up occasionally. What I mean by this is the browser would just sit there attempting to load a page forever, unless I killed the browser in program monitor and re-launched it. Even closing the active tab and trying to open new ones resulted in the same issue. Never had that problem in 2.3 or in 4.1+ just in the official ICS. Apart from that, I found it a reasonably reliable version. Never had issues with the GPS, either. Personally, I would say going with one of the developed ROMs is the best route (currently on Vanilla RootBox 4.1.2 and it is the best ROM I have run to date, after a bit of set up and customizing - kudos to thegreatergood if you're watching!) but your mileage may vary.
I'm still using the ICS leak, I haven't gotten around to upgrading to the latest official, but in general I'd say the stock ICS is worth using. My gps has very rare problems - I use it daily and it's great most of the time. Once in a while, the gps icon will just disappear and it'll not lock onto anything, toggling gps didn't work for me but a quick reboot has me up and running again quick enough. I'd say it happens once every couple of weeks but I don't pay that much attention to it anymore.
Stock ICS is worth it. Mine per say is rooted so I didn't bother if it would lock or not. GB's feel is too old you know.

Correction, I'm guessing it's relocked it to the Rogers network, it wouldn't make sense to lock to a different network. I'm also in the UK on O2 and in the process of getting an unlock code (first one didn't work as I said at&t). Anyway, I'd say it is definitely worth upgrading to the latest stock ICS, it's a lot smoother and so many little things makes the phone seem more of a recent smartphone than a 2011 one. Agree that GB feels too old now. No lag or problems on mine and GPS is completely fine. Haven't rooted yet, but if I can't get a code online I guess I can always do that.

Has development for the glide gone belly up?

I've loved this phone since I got it, and was terribly excited when it was successfully rooted. Many roms sprung up by a few devs, such as dman, and thegreatergood. But now, dman is prioritizing his daily driver, which is fine. Thegreatergood has disappeared due to personal reasons, which is also fine. I don't demand updates or anything, however it seems all the other smaller devs abandoned the device. Thegreatergood has 5 jellybean roms in the dev forum, and sadly none of them have been touched by anyone in almost a month. I'm starting to see issues with every 4.2.2 rom spontaneously fast booting, and there is no mention of any updates on Jelly Bean.
Basically, what I'm trying to ask is, is anyone out there working on something? I know asking for ETA's is a no-no, but I'm just asking if anyone has adopted development for this device? I use this phone for everything, and I'm not able to change to some of the more "preferred" devices such as the Nexus series. Is there anyone who knows of anything coming soon?
Sorry for the little wall of text, I'm just kinda sad that the glide seems to be dying off.
Worried about this too, the DEV section of forum seems to be totally dead.
AT&T seems to abandon this device too, since hasnt release a proper ICS ROM (It was like "Oh, ICS didnt work, lets leave it on GB").
Have to stay at GB because of that
dman with do what he can, I am sure. Other than that, I think development is dead.

Are there any decent QWERTY phones out there or any coming up this year?
I love this phone and it seems like there is no suitable replacement out there.
i would have to say that development isnt exactly dead... but its dying quickly... this phone isnt the main focus of the devs that hash out roms and tweaks for it anymore (for some not sure it ever was)... its an older phone now, there are bigger better phones out there (have been for a while). granted this is probably still the best qwerty phone, the interest to develop full time for it isnt.
i am sure here soon dman will put out whatever he is working on.... eventually...
in my opinion dont expect a 100% fully functional custom rom that isnt based on the stock ics... the only one i could say that is there is literom... all others out there arent even close.... we wont ever see 100% working JB...
Yeah, for a while I was checking in daily and flashing some patch, mod or rom like once a week! I am still happier on CM 10.1 than I was on GB or even the very nice ICS literom, but it would be great to see the list of fixes get worked on like they were.
I guess we are being put out to pasture, but I sure appreciate all the Devs did to help keep this phone feel great as long as it did!

I'm part of the Covenant Team as well as a co-dev for the IcePop rom. All I can say. Is that I know most of the other devs are either spending more time with their families with the near stable roms having been released, and maybe a few are back in school for the spring semester. I personally looked into the graphical and appearance of the roms, not as much of the coding due to computer technical issues and spacial issues with my hard drive. But don't give up hope just yet! Our glide may have a comeback soon. who knows. There are still a ton of we glide users in this community that are working behind the scenes to push out either patches or completely new roms.
Nevermind.
You are kidding right? The dev forum is full of different roms for all tastes, ICS, JB, the like. As far as I am aware, nobody got a "free phone" as you say. People just donated to dman (who paid for his Cappy out of his own pocket), and rightfully so because he and thegreatergood put our phone on the map again with great ROMs and updates.
Vanilla Rootbox has been my DD for a while now. The 4.2.2 roms have very few issues and none of those affect me fortunately.

Hmm, I don't think this is true. I got the busted ICS update for these devices when it was out before it was pulled. It was then posted a few weeks later again with the proper fix. You have to go through Kies, but you should have an ICS update for your device, at least to 4.0.4..
Really hope it hasn't died but at this point I am considering moving back to ICS just so my sound works properly. Sucks. If my VOIP calling worked correctly, CM10 is exactly what I want. Its so smooth and less bloated than the official ICS ROMs. I wouldn't even be considering a new device this year if we could get the sound issues fixed. But its gone on so long now that I would just like a straight answer from the few devs we have - is this issue ever going to be addressed?
I'm as happy as anyone to have any sort of development for the Glide and none of the developers owe us a thing. But this has been an issue for so long now, I wish we could just get a straight answer. Working on it, can't be fixed or they just don't care. Any answer is better than nothing at this point.
I really like the glide, because a like the tegra graphics for games, but, i like switch roms too. I hope that someone come to help us. Maybe we must wait a little more
Hi to all. I've tryed different roms till now. Im a noob still regarding android development, but i'm trying to learn a bit. I would definately love to have the VOIP calling enabled, photosphere less lag at wakeup for 4.2.2 and no lag for voice calls. Regarding photosphere, i've tryed it with every rom available i set permissions and everything. As far as what i observed is on 4.2.2 I can get 1 photo and then the app simply close. On ICS i can take up to 7 - 8 pics and after that the app close.

I would be happy to be wrong, but as far as I know ATT has released ICS with much errors, after that released the GB again to roll everyone back.
Also, all the versions of ICS have the deep sleep issue, so they are totally unusable as a phone itself.
People that asked ATT support for a solution had unacceptable answer like "Reboot your phone once a day".
As for Kies, my phone is not recognized with any rom to update so I do everything manually.

The best answer I can give... Actually read the development section for our device...
ICS IcePop Rom -modded UCLJ3)
UCLJ3 rooted (ICS -the fixed one-)
you guys complaining about ICS need to read up through the development forum before coming here to complain...
as for JB users (including myself)
Liquid Smooth (has working panorama, video (with sound), sound recording, and skype like apps work)
To be honest, liquid smooth i dont try it a lot, but in the issues say, that skype doesnt work

Lol, and what?
I've mainly been reading the dev section for all the time, and tried most of the roms availible there.
Stock and modified 4.0.4 has problems with the GSM deep sleep issue, so do all the roms above 4.0.4 (4.1 and 4.2). All this makes a good toy out of the phone, but looses the main purpose - recieve calls and sms on time.
And yes, I've already tested the 4.2.2 version of liquid smooth, but skype and bluetooth are not working, as stated in OP.
