XDA Apps can't be installed - About xda-developers.com

Hi all,
I dont know what went wrong to my phone. I can download & install XDA app from Play Store before.
After i flashed a new ROM, i can't no longer install this app. Tried several times, it gave me message, "Error. Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card".
I also tried download the apk to my PC and install it manually. I just said "App Not Installed"
I tried to download and install bigger apps and it was successful.
Any ideas?

Maybe you had xda app installed on external sd card before. And everytime you try to install it now, the phone wants to install it on the external sd card like before.
In some custom ROMs, there are issues with apps on external sd card, or the mounting point/name for the external sd card is different.
Or you just removed the external sd card?!
Wipe cache (and Dalvik cache) and try to install it again.
If that does not work, you may have to clear Play Store app data and reboot the phone before installing again.
Good luck !

I'm a noob. Still don't know how thing works.
I did use mod to extend my internal storage to SD. But it works before with the same mod.
And other APKs seems no problem on this ROM. Just xda app.
Anyway I will try your suggestion.
It it safe to clean those cache. Its in clockwork recovery right?

Also, try unmounting the sd card and then install the app, remount your sd card. I've seen this issue before and, for what it's worth, that has fixed the issue.
Went back to the threads and it seems it's a boot loader issue with some ROMS.

Yes, it's in CWM recovery.
Good luck !

Just wiped Cache Partition & Dalvik Cache, my phone stuck at boot animation.
Didn't have chance to try the 2nd option.
So, i just restore my phone to last backup.
Didn't have time to reflash the rom.
Maybe next time.

I'm getting the same error message when I try updating zedge app on insert coin

If you get a bootloop when wiping cache and Dalvik cache, there must be something wrong with your system.
You should really take the time and re-flash the ROM again.
Good luck !

Thank you! That's exactly what I did. I booted into recovery, did a back up just in case something went horribly wrong. Then I did a wipe/factory reset, empty dalvix cache and viola. My phone was still rooted and I reinstalled Titanium backup and was able to put all my apps back on the phone. Afterward I did a back up of all my stuff, then I flashed the recovery and backed up the ROM. Everything is working better than normal. Thanks!
Good glad I could help......

Periodic SD to PC backup
As you've learned, a periodic backup of SD to PC is a good practice.
Same thing has happened to me, been backing up SD to PC approx. monthly since then.

Man, I'm stuck in a boot loop.

Ok, So I wanted to change my ROM and I thought I did it right, but obviously that was not the case lol.
Pretty much I flashed the clockwork recovery, had it set to wipe the two things you want to wipe and then once it came back I installed zip from sd card, however, when I thought I was done and restarted my phone it just continuously loops back and forth back and forth.
I know there's a way to fix it since I have a micro sd reader, but how? I've got something REAL important to do tomorrow and not having my phone will be a huge mess.

I was on the stock rom and I was trying use the update-cm-7.0.3-vision-signed
I used Clockwork Recovery to wipe and it already had two options checked to wipe, Pavlik cache and wipe data or whatever it says... Then I flashed into clockwork recovery and I went to install from ZIP, I went and found the rom file on my sd card and pressed install, it took a few moments and was done. I also added the googlepack using the same method right after. Then when I thought I was finished I rebooted my device and its been stuck in a loop ever since.
Appreciate you trying to help, I guess I figured it out with a good ole fashioned guess hahaa.
I went and wiped my phone and data to factory, wiped the Pavlic (which I think I'm saying wrong lol) and then I installed the ROM again and it worked this time.

I would recommend flashing the superwipe from this thread. there are 3 downloads, Try the standard superwipe first. and use superwipe+ if you have GPS problems.
Super wipe automaticly wipes system, data and cache partitions. Flash the ZIP in recovery as you would flash a ROM.
And it is recommended not to use ROM manager for flashing and to always to it manually in CWM.
So download superwipe, flash superwipe, flash ROM, flash GAPPS and reboot.
I would also recommend flashing cm 7.1 because its an outrageously HUGE upgrade over the one you just flashed.

Every custom ROM gets stuck at boot screen!

I've successfully rooted and flashed cwm. I then proceed to install custom rom (have tried aokp, aosp, wicked, darthstalker, etc.), which all say installed successfully, but when it reboots they all get stuck at boot logo. Only difference is with Wicked, it reboots into recovery. The others just freeze at boot logo.
I've already installed over a dozen successfully. I follow the instructions from each ROM developer. After each fail I unbrick and reinstall stock ROM via Odin, which is always successful. No boot screen freezing or boot loops with stock ROM.
Have been going in circles for last few days, and can't get any custom ROM to work. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Do this thing
1) change ur recovery to TWRP (CWM is not bad but sometimes recovery matters)
2) when installing new ROM wipe system too ; but make sure you already have One ROM on sd card to flash.
3) if you can wipe internad sd too ; make sure you transfer data to external sd card and put ROm in external sd so that you can wipe system and sd card same time.
This might help you.

Look for wild child's super wipe script, it's a zip file, installs like any rom, it will wipe clean everything except the external sd, so put rom, kernel, etc to external sd, then use the wipe file, then install rom, i never had a problem with any rom when i do it that way

Thanks for advice! I tried that and it finally worked! I can't believe I didn't try formatting internal sd before. I was always able to install from sd on other s3's. Guess this one preferred external sd?

Help with Rebooting wiping storage

Hello everyone,
I would post this in the development thread but I can't since I am a ne user. Anyway..
I am currently on InFamous switching between the 2.4 TW version and the Google Edition v2.0.
My problem is every time I reboot my phone, it gets stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot image. Then when I go to recovery the Internal storage shows 0 MB available, and I can't fix permissions or wipe anything without having to format data first. The only way to boot my phone again, is to format data, wipe everything, and reinstall the ROM which is very annoying and time consuming.
PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks in advance

Have you tried this:
Before doing anything, be sure to back up the internal sdcard to a folder on your computer if you have anything you
want to save on the internal sdcard. Also be sure that the Google Edition zip file rom is on your "external" sdcard.
When the phone is flashed and ready to use go into settings>accounts tab>backup and reset>"Factory data reset".
Click on the factory data reset.
After doing that reboot into cwm or twrp which ever you are using and do a full wipe as you usually do but don't
forget to include "Factory reset".
Then flash the Google Edition rom as you normally have done and it should fix the problem you are having hopefully.
Good luck!

Have you tried holding the power button, home key and the volume up key all at the same time to boot in recovery? If not do a battery pull and do it when turning the phone back on

If you already tried to Odin flash the STOCK rom and formatted your internal sdcard and you still find "0 MB"
in your internal storage then it must be a hardware issue and if I were you I would return/exchange the phone.
Good luck!
It's not a hardware issue. It's a bug in twrp. Whenever you do "format data" it corrupts the data partition. Use PhilZ Touch recovery. His recovery includes the fix. Try it.

Thanks, I'll try that. How do I get rid of the bug after writing the new recovery? Format data?
Thanks!
Hello, any progress please? I have exactly the same issue.
I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265588&page=23 this solution:
I wanted to clean my internal SD card before flashing Omega ROM, so I used Format Data option from Wipe section in TWRP.
After that I lost almost two days trying to fix my phone. Flashed stock ROM, TWRP and Omega ROM endless times without success after that.
My phone became randomly unbootable on reboot or power on! It was stuck on i9505 logo that is shown before boot animation forever. It was same for both stock and Omega ROM, with or without external micro SD.
After endless tries, I figured out that my phone works fine if I do factory reset and wipe from original recovery. Worked fine before and after flashing TWRP.
I tired to Format Data from TWRP again and my phone again was stuck on boot.
So I did everything once more. Flashed stock, did factory reset and wipe from original recovery and then installed TWRP and in the end I flashed Omega without wiping anything.
Everything works just fine now and I will not try to use Format data option from TWRP on this device in near time! Please fix this.
First I used TWRP 2.5.0.1 and then 2.5.0.2, but it is same in both of them.

It says so in the OP... going between TW and Google Edition 2.0.. Out of curiosity though, what difference would that make? I have flashed and have backups of two versions of TW and quite a few AOSP variants... I can move between them seamlessly and haven't encountered any such problems as the OP. I use TWRP as well.
It was TWRP problem. I have flashed the stock ROM with stock recovery. I have done full wipe and my phone works well again. This is bug in TWRP. Don't push "format data" button!

S3 wont reboot, stuck at boot image

I have been going back and forth between Quantum, SlimHalo and Task's and I have never had a problem. I would wipe all but SD and storage, flash away, let the apps download and that was it.
Now, regardless of ROM, I wipe everything including data, flash the ROM, GAPPS, reboot and it all works but if I reboot or if the ROM crashes, the phone will get stuck at the kernel's boot screen.
Other than the SD card I don't think there is anything else I can wipe before flashing. Even when I restore a backup that used to work, the phone won't reboot. It'll get stick on the underwear if I have tasks' ROM or the SlimRom logo for SlimHalo. Those are both ROMs that worked perfectly. In fact they seemed to work better before I formatted the data partition.
I redownloaded the ROMs, GAPPS, same thing every time. I can't get a ROM to reboot even if I wipe everything.
I use TWRP 2.6.3.0
I'm having the exact same problem. Even flashed stock rom back via Odin, but no luck. Gets stuck at "Samsung" screen indefinitely. And I mean it, I've left it going for a few hours.
Maybe you should try one of the older TWRPs from the Team Win website and see what happens.

I managed to fix the issue by flashing the stock image via Odin and factory resetting right afterwards.
I am having very similar issues trying to update to several different 4.3 ROM's. I have a thread going in the Q&A section already. I haven't had time to grab a logcat yet but am confused so far. I am also on TWRP and usually after the "freeze" I have to wipe the internal memory completely, reboot recovery and then flash my backup other wise the restore just "fails". Starting to question if TWRP is the culprit here but have no time to experiment lately.

Here is how a managed to fix the issue.
Downloaded slimhalo and its gapps again.
Put the 2 files on my external SD
Booted to recovery
Formatted data
Wiped the usual plus internal storage
Installed the ROM and gapps from the SD card
Took the SD card out
Booted.
I then unchecked the option to download the google backed up apps
Downloaded and installed apps.
I haven't put my SD card back but that phone reboots fast and it had no issues rebooting 10 times in a row.
I hope this helps other people

I tried formatting an SD card, putting ROM and GAPPS on it. Booted to recovery, wiped all internal complete. Flashed ROM and GAPPS. Powered off and pulled SD card. Booted up and unchecked Google back up settings and then set up accounts and such. Tried rebooting and same problem. Just freezes at Samsung logo... Good thought but still no go... Flashed back to backup now.
