I have s-3 used the tool kit for sprint, flashed rom and root busy box and cmw touch, im getting an ota and yes it will not update due to cmw , says failed to verify bla bla, the cmw goes to install an unsucure.zip, and will let me do it, my question is, is that zip the ota or is that a zip on my phone? where would the ota download to? if this is not the ota can i flash new ota with cmw or do i have to unroot and go back to stock recovery to get this ota, would this ota be the one that is here in forums from 5-2012? or has anything been released since 5-2012? Thanks for any help on this.

I would like to go back Stock and get OTA updates. My problem is I can't use the unrooting tutorial on the G2/Z wiki as it require to flash a stock Rom and the only available stock ROM for my carrier is too old to get the OTA update (1.34.666.1 and OTA is looking for 1.34.666.5)
TheSPam gave me is nandroid backup so now I have the 1.34.666.5 Version but I'm still rooted. I'm trying to get back 100% stock.
When I'm trying to do the OTA update, after rebooting to flash the update clockworkmod recovery interfere and the OTA update Fail.
I've tried renaming the Update to update.zip, put this on the root of my sdcard and get clockworkmod to install the update from sdcard but I get an error like getprop CID and the update fail.
how can I get back to 100% Stock, unrooted and be able to get the OTA update?

What makes you think opening a new tread is going to solve your issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043541 quicker?
Absolutely nothing. I started a new thread because the issue in the original post is resolved and i'm facing a complete new problem. Because the initial issue was very specific to my carrier I tough starting a new thread for the new issue may get more answers cause its more generic.
It is that bad?
OK Short Update,
I've been able to install the OTA Update using Recovery. I got the update notification then downloaded the update. I opened the zip file and modified the updater-script to bypass CID check adding || 1 == 1 (So the CID check will always return true then I click ok on the System Update notification.
Phone rebooted and in recovery I selected install ZIP from sdcard. Pointed to the OTA update and everything went fine.
So I'm unrooted now but i'm still S-Off and because I installed the OTA update over a rooted nandroid backup, SuperUser is still in the rom and I can't delete it.
I'm still not able to return the phone for repair and still don't know what to do.
And the last problem, Wifi doesn't work anyore on my phone. It says wifi error and I can't get the mac Adress on Info about your phone, nor the bluetooth address.
Any solution?
Any news about that? I'm still stuck with stock rom but no wifi and bluetooth and can not delete superuser from apps drawer. Thanks
You cannot delete superuser as its embedded in your ROM. Superuser doesn't magically appear when you get root, its put on ROMs for your use or put on during the root process for certain devices.
Now anyways, onto your predicament. You should search your vendors website for an update RUU (eg. vodafone website) or in the android development section. Once you find one to your liking you just follow the Vision Wiki guide to unrooting. There really is no easier way to remove all the aspects of a root without following those steps. Ultimately following that guide will help you restore your Desire Z/G2 to a normal one with no superuser, superCID or secu-flag unlock.
Just a side note, it will be rather difficult for you to obtain a stock ROM from any other user because since they don't have root access or clockworkmod they can't make you a backup of their 1.72 based ROMs.
Okay, so I installed Clockword Recovery and ROM Manager so that I could get Jellybean early. And it was awesome. But now I'm getting bugged about the OTA update, and I kinda want that. Ofcourse, Clockwork Mod Recovery won't let me install OTA, so how can I go back to stock recovery? Because I dislike the idea of not having OTA updates anymore...
Hopefully before you get hundreds of rude entitled responses you should check out some of the stickies on the various forums. I believe there is one with a title that matches exactly what you are looking for
If not having stock recovery is the only problem (and there are a number of other reasons an OTA update could fail to install), you can definitely use ClockworkMod to install it.
If the update has already been downloaded to the phone, the zip file will be stored in /cache. Just boot into CWM and flash it. If the update hasn't been downloaded, grab zip file yourself (take a look at the OTA update URLs thread) and flash it using CWM.
If you're rooted, don't forget to also flash SuperSU before you reboot, or use some other method to maintain root. OTA updates will remove root regardless of how they are installed unless you take care.
Thanks for helping out an Android noob. I recently rooted and installed CWM recovery. This is my first OTA update since doing so and I haven't been able to find any clear instructions on what to do.
I assume there are a few options - I'd love to hear what they are and what advantages/disadvantages each has. I'm assuming I can unroot and go totally stock but I'm not really sure how to flash a stock recovery. I've also read that using OTA Rootkeeper is a great way to temp unroot then reroot after the OTA. I'm a little confused since I see a similar option in the SuperUser app - does that work as well?
I also am wondering if there will be a CWM flashable package in the near future that we can use and if it's worth waiting for something like that?
Thanks again.
There's a thread here discussing the OTA and how people are installing it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893036
I am running rooted stock (without CWM) and I simply used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and then did the update. Since you have CWM, I think you've got a few additional steps.

Thanks but I've been following that thread - there aren't any instructions just comments on personal situations. I'm sure there are many like me who need a bit of a guide for this specific situation. It definitely sounds easier without CWM - I'm surprised I can't find any clear instructions on how to revert to stock recovery.
You can get the OTA as long as your are running a stock ROM! or worst case scenario you just have to update through Kies!!
Use odin to install stock rooted image and recovery. Then get voodoo ota rootkeeper from the play store. Run it to preserve root. Check for software update. Install update. Restore root with rootkeeper. Reinstall custom recovery. Done.

From what I understand you need to unroot to get the OTA - though Kies might be a workaround.
I'm specifically talking about rooted WITH CWM. You cannot get the OTA without stock recovery (based on what I've read).

Thanks gunny! Do you lose apps/settings when flashing back to stock rooted/recovery or is everything preserved?
Surprising to me nothing was lost.
I rooted the phone then update came, I like the sound of some of the updates so I want to take on the updates.
I came across this post..
Code:

Did I read it right? If I apply this file, I wont have to keep on rooting/unrooting to take on updates? Or can I reset counter using triangle method?
Just dl voodoo ota root keeper from the play store, temp unroot accept the ota update and reroot using the app works perfectly
Either way will take you to the latest update. If you use triangle method, just follow instructions to reroot
and ota rootkeeper wont install stock recovery for you. it also wont replace any system files you may have messed wit. still too many chances for the ota to fail
-my 2 cents

it says useless with: samsung phones updated via Kies or Odin..... I used Odin, so I guess it wont work
Download Freeza's ALL IN ONE zip and install through recovery.

It's the latest update and you wont lose root.
Sorry if this has been asked before and I missed it when searching, but on this sprint galaxy s3, can the OTA update be applied successfully after being rooted?
I ask because I just got one for my girlfriend and she wanted me to root it so that she can use the wifi tether program. And out of the box it was still on 4.0.4. I successfully rooted it with out any problem using the tool kit. And now it's prompting for the update every day, which is getting annoying to her. I told her to hold off till I can find a clear answer.
I know I can get a 4.1 rom and flash that now that it has cwm recovery on it if the update is a no go. Its just a manner of getting her to decide on which one she likes.
You can update but you can not use the normal OTA that she is getting the notification for if she has a custom recovery installed. The good thing is that, if you receive the notification and tell the phone to update it will fail and then stop nagging you for a while.
There are a few ways to go about updating if you want to. You can replace the stock recovery and then update. You can also manually apply the update (the update in in a ZIP in the cache folder). Move the update from cache to your sdcard and then flash it from CWM. This will only work if you are strictly stock (i.e. no modified or removed system files).
http://androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390135922294523494 flash in cwm/twrp. No wipe. This is a modified version of sprints update without the system checks
Cant say it enough. I have updated the normal ota way with root. Mine and my wifes as well
Thanks folks. Went ahead and had her run the ota and it was successful and she still has root.

Muchas garcias Billiard. This will be so much easier than trying to restore all the bloatware apps!
