hello,
i want remove at my "xperia-pro" the pre-installed apps. because most of them i doesnt use it. furthermore, i want get more free ram to install other apps.
i read many posts about this issue, as i understood > root is the initial pre-condition. afterwards, the pre-installed apps can be removed with root-explorer.
now to my questions:
1) is there a simple tool to remove the apps with rooting the device ?
2) i use the the firmware 4.1.B.0.587. i not sure, but most the "how to root" thread is not valid for the newest firmware (eg the easy solution form doomlord is not working for ics) ?
3) what is baseband ?
thanks.
Titanium Backup for removing apps, see the numerous threads and guides for rooting the latest FW, type your last question in to Google.

sorry, but i need your support. i read various posts about the root of xperia pro mk16i with locked bootloader, but i'm very confused.
a) some of the tutorials describes first to downgrade to a gb rom > root > flash ics
b) many posts refers to doomlords easy rooting tool, but it's not working (v1)
i'm not able to try v4, because my anti-virus software alerts a virus at downloading.
c) flashtool root > "no root explosion for this version"
as i said, please support me to get my phone rooted.
thanks,
komser

now, i downgrade my phone to gb 2.3.4 using the flashtool.
afterwards i root via the doomlord procedure. everything works fine, without any error messages at the according tools.
question:
i'll upgrade to actual rom ics (stock rom from sony).
should i use the pc companion tool from sony or the flashtool ?
after upgrade to ics the root is still available ?
thanks,
komser
Use the flashtool and read one of the numerous threads explaining how to root it.

I've been researching rooting for a while now but I still don't quite get what the consequences, requirements and benefits are of rooting, flashing etc. The wiki seems to be rather out of date, and doesn't even have an arc section.
What I want is:
1.To stop all the crappy software rogers and sony have forced on there, constantly autostarting themselves(Hotshots golf, setup guide, liveware manager, mobile backup, storefront, postcard, even maps likes to run on its own)
2. Swype
What I am concerned of is:
1. Do I have to erase everything on my phone to root?
2. Would I lose any of the default functionality of the arc?
3. What would I require to do this modification?
4. Can I reverse this process and go back to factory settings?
5. Would I be able to update later on?
and most of all, 6. Would it actually allow me to do what I want as stated above?
I've got an LT15a running 2.3.3 on Rogers with no attempted modifications.

1. Nope at all, if you have unlocked bootloader and flash prerooted kernel correlate to your firmware
2. Nope, the phone still remains intact after rooting, just add superuser to your phone
3. Just need your phone rooted and do exactly as the thread owner said, ur gonna be fine.
4. Yes, all you need is flash back to your stock rom
5. Yes, absolutely possible
6. Yes again, once you have root permission (superuser), you can delete those craps and use Swype.
*just a side note,
you can root your phone without unlocking your bootloader but yeah, that would mean loosing your data completely
@Babygau
Alright, thank you very much.
On a follow up then, can you point me towards the best method of rooting an arc, bearing in mind that Rogers has disabled Sony's bootloader?
And also where I would be able to get Swype? Swype's site is pointless and google just brought up people talking about using it, not how to get it.
@cryogenix
Yeah, thats what I was afraid of :/
Rogers disabled the arcs bootloader, I'm trying to figure out what I can do and hopefully not erase my data.
So long as I can achieve the 2 objectives at the top, I'd be happy though.
You'll lose the ability for ota updates when you delete system files. That's the only bad thing at your plan.
Rooting alone won't remove any abilitys.

@bunktacular
You would need to flash a 2.3.2 ROM onto your phone (Ignore this if you are on 2.3.2). Rooting is as simple as installing Gingerbreak and running it (Gingerbreak doesn't work on 2.3.3 and hence the need to downgrade to 2.3.2). Then do an OTA (Over The Air) update to 2.3.3 to retain root.
I suggest you wipe user data. Make a backup if need be.
Also, get the latest Swype 3.0 beta from here.
Once you have your rooted 2.3.3, install Titanium Backup. It will allow you to remove all the Rogers and SE bloatware. No, you won't lose the functionality of the arc. You stand to gain with rooting not vice-versa.
The only caveat is that once you remove system apps as Flo95 pointed out is that the next time you want to update your phone, you'd have to resort to SEUS instead of an OTA update.
[With the latest update from SE (i.e. the update from August 1, 2011), I'm not sure about root status.]

if u already have your bootloader unlocked, just flash lastest firmware including prerooted kernel
if not, using gingerbreak

I doubt Gingerbreak will patch 2.3.3.
The issue is that the exploits in 2.3.2, 2.3.3 were patched in 2.3.4 by Google and because Sony's version of 2.3.3 was released after 2.3.4 was released, those security fixes from 2.3.4 were backported into Sony's version of 2.3.3.

He's got a Rogers branded arc branded arc. Therefore, he can't unlock the bootloader (yet).
Hello,
I've bought a Xperia Arc S 2 months ago, and now I want to root it.
I've never rooted a phone. So I suggest that my bootloader is locked.
I don't know what I first have to do and what I have to do to root my phone.
My Build number ends with .62 and i've Android 2.3.4.
I hope that's enough information about my phone. I don't know what I have to do now.
Do I have to downgrade to .42 and then root? Which steps do I have to follow to root my phone?
All what I ask is a simple root guide for my situation at the moment, with clear steps
and with links.
Can anybody help me?
I'm new to android too but from I've read on this forum, you can only root .62 if you unlock your boot loader. However, if you wish to retain you locked bootloader, you have to downgrade to .42 first and root with zerg's rush method (That is by far the easiest)
Then you can update OTA to .62 and remain rooted, OTA only !!
I hope all the information I have provided is correct. Good luck
If u downgrade to .42 it will be much easier to root and me personaly i dont really see new new things of improvements in .62 update. If u are using .42 u can root your phone with a program called UnlockRoot its free and u just need to switch the phone to debugging mode and connect it to the pc then u press "root" and the phone will be rooted in like 30 40 secs. You can do that even with locked bootloader that was my case if u want that program google it or contact me ill sent it to you.About .62 update root there are many tutorials about it just search the forum and u will find qite alot

Thanks a lot (Lusterboi too). I've a few questions left.
How you can downgrade to .42? Do you need a program and where can I get it?
And you are saying that this is the easiest way to root your phone, but is it the best too?
I mean, I've heard from 'CyanogenMod' and 'Doom Kernel', but what is the difference between this way and CyanogenMod or Doom Kernel? Or aren't that root programs?
And in ± 2 weeks Android ICS comes for the Xperia Arc S. Is ICS compatible with rooted phones ?
Ok. I would be glad if someone could point me in the right direction here, and answer this question.
I am planning on buying an Xplay, mainly for phoning and gaming. I am very keen on keeping the Xplay "clean" and fast, and therefore wish to remove all bloatware from the beginning.
Could someone point me in a direction to where to start when I first unpack my phone? Should I accept all the updates and so on? What´s the best thing to do if I want to remove the bloatware. I might as well say that I´m pretty much a beginner when it comes to all the terms "rooting" and stuff. But I want to do it a safe way, without taking risks of breaking or bricking anything.
Thanks.
Some of the bloatware can be simply uninstalled, some cannot. For the latter you need to root your phone. I like to use SuperOneClick for rooting. Note that some firmwares (the ones whose version ends with .62 or greater) cannot be rooted, so I wouldn't update to them.
Once rooted, removing the bloatware is pretty simple. The most common way is to use Titanium Backup to uninstall it or you can even do it manually by deleting the relevant .apk files from /system/app.
Root your phone ,this is the first step that you must to do. After rooting ,you can remove bloatware from your phone and gain more free space on you internal memory.
I think that the best rooting way is the (zergRush Method):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
After rooting ,download 'Root Explorer' ,go to system/app and remove all the things you don't need.
If you are getting an AT&T Xplay I would suggest installing the generic north American rom which is 2.3.4 and missing the AT&T bloat. I backed up the games from the stock rom first then installed the NA rom and reinstalled them.
First use pc companion and install the latest update. Then root and remove bloat and get everything set up like your contacts and apps. After that install cwm and make a nandroid backup and start flashing roms! Back-up your info if the rom won't carry it over. Optional: Unlock bootloader before roms. There are plenty of stock based roms to for people with locked bootloaders.
EDIT: Don't do the below, just read you don't want risk!
1. Unlock the bootloader
2. Use flashtool to install a generic ROM .FTF file (.368 has CRT animation but is old, .42 is good, .62 is good)
3. Install a kernel (DooM's is great). This will allow you to overclock, and give automatic ROOT (no need to exploit or install anything else)
4. Buy/acquire an app called "Titanium Backup" (it needs ROOT to run), and check the guide in these forums for which apps are safe to remove
The first thing to do? Here's a list:
1. READ everything you can find related to your model version of the Play. There are different versions depending on where you are in the world and who your service provider is. If you have a GSM capable phone (Europe, Canada, ATT in US just to name a few), you will have a lot more modification options available. If you have a CDMA capable phone (Verizon), you have fewer choices but there are more coming almost every day.
2. READ again - you know you only understood maybe a 10th of what you just read!
3. POST specific questions AFTER you have searched the forums. Don't be afraid to try Google - that's what it's there for.
4. THINK !!! - what is it that you expect to get from modifying your phone that it doesn't do now? If you just want to remove bloatware, you can simply root, install a custom recovery, make a backup and then go to town. No need for unlocking the bootloader or loading a custom rom.
5. SLOW DOWN !!! - don't be in such a hurry to modify your phone that you leap before you look. Most bricked phones could be avoided in the first place by taking time to understand the steps involved before making changes.
6. DON'T PANIC !!! - There are very few things you can do to your phone that the experienced folks here on the forums can't help you resolved.
7. HAVE FUN !!!

Not necessarily. If you install some of the latest updates, you no longer can root. That's why some research needs to be done first.
Search google and read xda forums on a daily basis. That's the shortest route lol
1. Root using zergrush or use flashtool rooting feature
2. Unlock bootloader (this will void your warranty)
3. Install clockworkmod 5.0.2.7 for xperia phones (get it free on play store fka android market)
4. Install titanium backup and perform batch backup of your apps to your sd card
5. Get doomlord's kernel v11 (link is on my signature) and wifi modules
6. Reboot into recovery and hold down or tap volume down to enter CWM recovery
7. Flash the kernel, then reboot and flash the wifi module
8. Flash your custom rom
9. There your phone is bricked! Haha

Thanks for the input.
The only thing that I plan to do, is probably just remove bloatware and nothing more. So I guess it´s just down to rooting the phone then, and delete the things that I don´t want? No need for unlocking bootloaders etc.?
Is there a list of what stuff that can be deleted? Or other things that can be achieved by only rooting the phone?
And the last question. Is it totally ok to accept android updates after the rooting and removing of bloatware?

If you aren't going to get into custom kernels and overclocking, then no, you can do what you want without unlocking the bootloader.
There are some links in General and here in Q & A that make suggestions of what can be removed safely.
If you only rooted and didn't remove anything, you could accept updates. If you remove bloatware, the update won't even install. That's why I suggest installing CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery and doing a Nandroid Backup after you root but before you debloat.

First thing: Root right away with Flashtool (http://androxyde.github.com/) and don't listen to the others, the Flashtool nowdays contains the Exploit that you need and it works perfect to root on 2.3.4 (I did it myself when I root'd mine the first time).

That's because it differs between models and some people aren't aware of that, while others like to be argumentative!
If you have a Verizon R800x Play, our firmware only goes up to Version 2.3.3 (3.0.1.E.0.88). If yours comes with 2.3.2, you're safe to update. You will be able to root with no problem.
If you have one of the other phones, you can apply updates below 4.0.2.A.0.62 and still root. .62 and higher, no root.
Check out this thread [HOW-TO] Root Phones w/ Android v2.2.x-2.3.x (zergRush Method) for additional information.
i found many solutions nd tried but none works for me
m having 2.3.4 (4.0.2.a.0.62)
i read few written there that have to change GB firmware to 2.3.3 then root i didnt understand tht rooting should be easy in every firmware
any other method n i have locked bootloader
Try this -
DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0](zergRush Exploit)
If you got .62/69 you will not be able to root using doomLord's zergrush method.
You have 2 options
1 using flashtools downgrade to .42 then root using zergrush then update over the air to latest version this will keep root. Only do this if bootloader Is locked as it will brick your phone.
2 unlock bootloader then install a custom kernel that is pre rooted.
if you search on the stickies all answers are there. Both in general and dev sections

Anyway, rooting with recovery has sofar always worked for me. Search the forums for "bin4ry" and "rootxperia"
I also upgraded with the official ICS but soon went back to 4.0.2.A.0.62 for one simple reason. I see people asking everywhere how to root xperia s with locked bootloaders.. There's a lot of confusion in new users regarding rooting and I also faced the same when i first started reading this forum. So i finally thought a complete guide integrating everything on how to root a phone on LOCKED bootloader.
For unlocked ones, you can simply get root with CWM by flashing a custom kernel. You can get the details over here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23181182#post23181182
And various custom kernels can be found in our android development thread !!
For noobs, first of all for understanding what rooting is : (As on wiki)
Rooting is a process allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem. Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. Rooting is analogous to jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system or the Sony PlayStation 3. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.
As Android was derived from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device is similar in practice to accessing administrative permissions on Linux or any other Unix-like operating system such as FreeBSD or OS X.
Read this thread by Doomlord for all details : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526866
Now on to rooting..
Currently the method used for rooting with locked BL is for GB only (you cannot flash a pre-rooted image with locked BL).. SO if you are on ICS and not rooted, you first need to flash to GB and if you are on GB then follow the guide.
First of all, detail guide on HOW to flash is given by gtrab here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725078
You can flash GB in the same way he said using the GB firmware LT26_6.0.A.3.75_UK Generic from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
After you have flashed GB finally start the rooting.

Alternate way to ROOT from GB : Go here (it's pretty easy)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429
Just download, flash to GB if you are on ICS and start run.bat and follow the instructions :highfive:
Once you are on rooted ICS, and thinking of flashing to different ICS (latest 6.1.A.2.45) preserving root it can be found HERE :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856287&highlight=preserving+root+on+ics
Make sure you follow all the instructions given by these dev's before you start flashing your device.
Also, you can never brick your device on LOCKED bootloaders so don't worry !!
As everyone says DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
I or anyone of these experts above are not responsible if you burn your phone or PC/laptop
Enjoy !!
Thanks all the experts for giving these guides.. Will keep this post updated with new rooting developments !!

After reading your whole post, i see that you haven't mentioned about Eroot, the easiest method for rooting. In eroot, you just need to download the tool from above mentioned thread, connect your phone, select your android version and done! No long methods of flashing and flashing. I just rooted my XS running on GB with locked bootloader yesterday.
There have been several guides on rooting identical to this thread.
