Decided to post this here since this is currently the only phone with 4.0 right now.
I'm using a nexus one with 4.0.3 at the moment and I got a text message from at&t telling me that tethering requires a plan after using the native tethering on the phone. I've used tethering on 2.2 and 2.3 for years without issue, and it just seems strange that this happened after upgrading (but it could be unrelated as well) My understanding was that carriers were not able to distinguish data usage through the stock tethering in previous versions (at least in the same way iOS and WP7 handle tethering), or at least at&t wasn't doing so.
Any at&t users have similar experiences with their galaxy nexuses? I'm using an $30 3G iPhone unlimited data plan on my account at the moment

I think the way they have been determining it with the iPhone in the past was with the TTL on the packets being sent. Computers generally have a different TTL than the iPhone. Maybe they started to do the same with Android phones?
Wasn't Koush's ClockworkMod Tether supposed to do the tethering via a method that was supposedly not traceable by carriers?

You should respond back and be like, I don't remember tethering - where's your proof that I did?
ATT has been heavily monitoring for tethering in the last 6 months or so.

ATT busted me for tethering and removed my unlimited plan. I ended up going with verizon becuase of it and have never looked back. The unlimited was nice, but verizon speeds with GNexus is far better.
I have never really abused it, but my wife and I have been tethering on Verizon well over a year. We have used Wifi Tether for Root on my OG Droid, PDAnet on her Incredible and me currently using native tethering on my GN under Bugless Beast. Never received a single text, email or bill. Granted we only use it combined for about 200MB a month so we might be flying under their radar.

Understood, but only 200mb for a whole month for 2 people, including tethering? Can't even believe that lol.

Thank you for that info. I usually use 3G tether for when I'm off wifi on my own tablet but I don't use even 200mb so I (hopefully) will be safe on 4G as well.
careful, with 4G it's tempting to use the full power (700KB/s+) to get some serious DL'ing done

Funny you say that. I see people and want they use and always wonder how they use that much. It is not like we try to use it as a replacement to our regular cable internet at home.

I guess it came across wrong. We tether for about 200MB a month. We actually use much more data than that using the phones as intended. I use Wifi every chance I get and still rack up about 1.5GB total per month. My wife forgets to use Wifi and will rack about 3GB normally. We are both grandfathered unlimited data on Verizon.

So basically yesterday I am cruising the web via wifi tether on my laptop, and boom I get a redirect to a tmobile site saying I need to add wifi hotspots to my plan.
Tried a usb tether, same result. Tried an ics rom, as I was on the latest ota, still same result.
Anyone else experienced this? Or discovered a work around?

For the benefit of others, would you mind describing your tethering habits (e.g. how often, how long, what kind of browsing are you doing (youtube, just reading news, etc))
Yeah that's a good idea actually. I have the 10gb fake "unlimited" plan. My phone is my only means of internet access at home, so I've been using close to or just over 10gb a month for probably the past 6 months.
Had att internet, it was garbage slow, and my phone was literally way faster, so I cancelled att, and have been wifi tethering ever since.
The past month I also did away with television bc being that I am so busy with school and work, it was a waste of money paying 100 a month for something I don't use. Streamed a few episodes of family guy and American dad, and hit my data limit really fast. Throttle speed is basically useless for those of you that have not had the displeasure.
Anyway perhaps all that heavy usage tipped them off last month. I'm not even close to my cap this month, as it was reset on the 9th, but still I'm getting nothing now.
Perhaps changing my laptop user agent string is my next plan of attack, I will keep you posted.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I wasn't even aware tmobile had 10GB plans. Anyways, user agent has helped me in the past when they've tried to block me. I have since stopped receiving notices (even after switching user agent back) however, I have cut back on how much I tether. When they were intercepting me, I was using 80% of my 5GB/month easily each billing cycle. Once I backed down a bit I haven't gotten it.
Also, I had noticed that they only intercepted traffic through browser, so I'm assuming port 80. All other applications I had that used other ports could connect fine. You could possibly use a proxy and get around it.
Change your user agent string or use https:
If I have issues and can't use https: instead I change the user agent. Firefox allows you to do this, so I change my user agent string to match firefox on andriod.
Changing user agent fixed the issue! For now anyway. What a bunch of bastards, I pay $50 a month for 10gb of data and they want to tell me how I can use it. Doooooousche baaaaaagggs!
Ps I downloaded UAPicker for internet explorer to win this battle.

So I've been fet'up with getting throttled from Straight talk using my tmobile note2.. good service anda good deal.. but you get what you pay for $45 for unlimited everything with the "asterisk". So I was at a tmobile store in Bellvue, wa. yesterday and after testing the network at least in the store(20mb up and and down!!) I decided since no contract to pay the 25 more this month and give it a shot. And it's good.. I'm in tacoma and average 5mb up and 2mb down. Now.. my question is red flags.. do I need to watch my tethering? For example.. If my comast was out for 5 days and I watched some vudu hdx and netflix hd movies and used multiple gigs or whatever via wifi tether would I need to worry about getting a call from TMO or anything or what? Also I'm using a t889UVALJ1 based rom.. would I be getting better speeds with the UVBMB4 based rom? I can't seem to find any current LTE coverage maps..

I don't think Tmobile throttles you just for tethering so long as you're within your data cap. when I joined they told me to tether as much as I want.
T-Mobile is going to start additional service w/additional price to 4G Unlimited plan. The additional service is tethering. Tethering data usage will be limited to the tether plan you choose. But the 4G Unlimited plan will stay 4G/LTE unlimited. I don't know when this tethering addition will be available.
I believe that 500meg tether plan will be part of the default pricing plan. If you want more tethering data usage then you have to pay more. Correct me if I am wrong.
At this point no one is providing true high speed unlimited tethering. Basically no cellular provider wants to be a data provider to desktops and laptops.
ok I see.. I knew that the unlimited no throttle 4g plan was 70.. and now that I look at my bill it shows 500mb of tethering included.. I was thinking when you were rooted and using a 3rd party app to tether with they couldn't tell that you were tethering.... is this wrong? they can tell no matter how you tether?
I'm not a tmobile customer...yet, but Sprint can't tell the difference between tethered or untethered data when rooted and using 3rd party.
Sorry to ask off topic question but how much data were you using on Straight Talk? I'm considering giving them a shot.

My data usage was sporadic.. a few times at first I had streamed a few gigs over a weekend when commuting between Eugene Oregon and Seattle and wasn't getting throttled.. and sometimes I would stream talk radio at school a few hours a day and get throttled. I have some friends that also use straight talk and don't have problems.. one jogs and hour a day listening to pandora or xmradio online and doesn't ever get throttled.. I think if you kept it under a couple hundreds mb's a day you would be fine.. but that one time you stream netflix for a couple hours one day.. or couple days of heavier use and you'll probably get the squeeze. The internet still works but it's 56k slow. And if you get throttled it isn't till your next billing period before it gets reset.. so if it's the 12th of the month and you get hit you won't have full speed till the 1st of the next month.. then your a little paranoid to use it too much.. I had no coverage issues with straight talk and the price is unmatched but unless I'm on a tight budget the $70 uncapped tmobile service will likely be worth the extra 25 bucks a month.

T-Mobile will be able to tell you are tethering since they read what kind of packets are being sent. Laptops and desktops send a different type of data packet than mobile devices. If you are tethering to another android or ios device you can tether all you want no problem, but a laptop or desktop you will need to use a browser like chrome or firefox and change the user agent to either android or ios. That to me that defeats the purpose because if I wanted to look at mobile version of the web I can just use my phone.
You can use an app called pdanet which will let you USB tether and hide your tether usuage, but some websites might not work.
Another option is to set up a vpn and connet to the internet via vpn. A vpn connection encrypts all data transmission so t-mobile cannot read it so no need to change user agents.
Really I think tethering should be free. Why should I have to pay for the same data twice. That's the biggest rip off that all carriers are doing, but untill enough people complain it will stay as it is.

Both Sprint and TMO can tell.if you are tethering if they wish. They look the other way. If they sniff packets they have IP and MAC address.

Technically you are. There is no difference from the data the cellular companies send to your phone vs tethering. It's not like they use a different source of data for tethering. It's the same but they want to charge you as if it's different or costing them more if you tether. If I use 20 Gb a month on my phine or tethering to my laptop or pc whats the difference. It's still 20 Gb. Whether mobile or not the data is srill the same and from the same source, so why charge as if it was different?

As far as I am concerned, it is costing them more in bandwidth usage. If everyone was allowed to tether all they want, the network would become so congested that data shows might becone slower for every user.
I may be wrong. Someone with a broader knowledge correct me if I am.

Hey guys. I've been using Hyperdrive ROM, effortless, stock nf9 rooted, stock nk3 rooted... And for months (almost a year) I've been using unlimited tethering. I know how to setup the APN's, I format my partitions between flashing... Basically, I know what I'm doing.
Well I think T-Mobile has finally figured out how to filter through the ipv4 data. Recently (this week) on my desktop and chromebook, when I try to connect to a website, I get the T-Mobile upsell page about adding on tethering data.... which means it randomly started deducting from my bucket out of the blue. It never did before. I've reinstalled many fresh roms (including full stock odins) with no luck.
It lets some data slip through still (League of Legends and Chromecast depending on what is being casted - I use my hotspot as the router).
Anyone else experiencing this?

Only Dirt-Bags would use T-Mobile as their personal "everyday" AP for Computers. T-Mobile set limitations to protect the network so we can all enjoy decent data speeds and service. Scums abuse T-Mobile and ruin the experience for the rest of us.

This reminds me of losers illegally downloading in their moms basement. Such a terrible "entitlement" generation we're living in.
Boo ****ing hoo. Get over it. T-Mobile reported 5.7b from service revenue in the 3rd quarter alone of 2014. They are not hurting for money. Charging for tethering is just another bull**** way to squeeze a tiny bit more money from customers.

Pffft. If I'm tethering 20GB a month chromecasting Netflix and playing a few games of LoL while others use legal mobile bittorrent apps, run legit mobile dns servers and voip to their friends all day using over 100-200GB... then who really gives a f***? It's unlimited data.
If you can use the network for it on your mobile, it's not all that different on PC- especially windows 8 cuz you can set connections as "limited" or whatever and it won't do updates or autosync apps.
You think they're hurting for bandwidth when they just promised a bunch to Google for its own virtual cellular network. ..?
Still working the same for me using the Wifi Tether Router application and changing the Apn with a touchwiz based rom.

Uuuuuh no. I used to work for Tmobile and this might be hard for you to comprehend in all your self righteousness but there are actually people who use 1 terabyte or more a month and that's who tmobiles worried about. Don't believe me, that's fine, go do some reading for yourself. Tmobiles not a backyard company who's multi billion dollar network can't handle a measly 113gb. Besides I rack up about 47gb a month just on my phone alone with no tethering. Yes I have a life and job, no I don't live in my moms basement, so keep the childish comments to yourself.

Yes I ran into this issue with the Note 3 and Note 4, but I started using FoxFi and it's been working fine on my Note 4 for the past week.
I just made my tethering mod for this new lollipop for my wife's Note 3, and yesterday I wound up using her 3gb tethering and then I got blocked by the Tmobile message, and tried it again just a few moments ago, and to my surprise it was working again,
She doesn't like me messing with her phone, so I have to wait till she is asleep to play with it.
So it is working with lollipop with FoxFi. I will keep playing with it and see what happens. It is in testing stages.
I wasn't able to make my rom work with @dsixda kitchen, so i was using @mastergrillo stock rom and edited a few files and its working with @jovy23 turorial, that's how I've been able to make things work. I need permission from @mastergrillo to use his rom before I can post the Tethering Mod Rom.
I tried it last night and the only thing that wont tether is signing into the ps4 network but Netflix and YouTube works just fine, also tethering to a laptop. So it does look like they're finding a way to block it. But the thing is I never got a message from Tmobile saying that I used up my 5gb of data. Very weird

I'm willing to try tether mod it you're wife do not let u use her phone
Using a built-in hot-spot to tether is not a big deal as long as you use it accordingly and for the purpose it was meant.
2.5 G of data is plenty for the average user powering a tablet, laptop or media player on the go or outdoors away from a wifi signal.
It comes in handy while on long road trips and the misses wants to watch some Netflix or Amazon prime.
But trying to run your entire household off of T-Mobile's network is kind of lame, I guess that this over tethering abuse is OK with XDA and when you least expect it T-mobile is going to make a case of it and drag somebody into court and the lawyers will have a field day with it.
If you're allowed 2.5gb and you want to use 200+gb, technically it can be called "theft of services" , give yourself peace of mind and buy some Internet service from a provider, 30 or 40 dollars a month isn't such a hardship.
I personally use it sparingly but really appreciate having it to use and not abuse.

The problem is that for the 2.5GB data users paid for, there is only 500MB allowed for tethering.
Users want to use their paid 2.5gb data, either on the phone or using tethering, because they already pay for the 2.5gb data and they should be able use their paid data the way they want.

According to the plan comparison chart on t mobile site you can tether all of your data quota except for the unlimited plan where you are capped at 5G, which makes some sense.
I would very much like to have the freedom to learn how to bypass tether restrictions but at the same time running an entire household worth of data off t mobile network isn't right. Just imagine what AT&T would do to you if you used 100G on their LTE plan.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not giving a moral lecture. I am making a practical point. We all switched from AT&T or Verizon because we like what T Mobile is doing. If we abuse the system T Mobile will fail and we will have to go back to AT&T. I make a living designing telecom electronics for a company you all know so I can tell you with 100 percent confidence that if we all run our entire home Internet on t mobile network it will break and they will have to reduce the data rate for every one. It's a simple application of the available bandwidth, Shannon's theorem, and the number of users in a given cell.
So as a practical issue, let's figure out how to by pass tethering and then use it responsibly.
Pretty much. I'm not saying hey let's just use up tmobiles data and run it as much as we can. Just because some might be OK with using less than 5 GB a month doesn't mean everyone uses it the same amount. And yes its very possible to run up 5gb of data in just a few hours of watching Netflix in one night. I work from 6am -9pm every day. When I get home, I just wanna watch some Netflix, youtube and sleep. Netflix just happens to have the HD feature which runs up data like crazy. I can't justify paying Comcast or others another data fee just to watch TV a few hours of the night. Having said that, I'll make sure to use an extra 5gb next month for each of you in here that want to preach to me.
