So back on my Evo 4G whenever I wanted to flash a new rom, I would load it on my SD card. Then boot into custom recovery and wipe cache/Dalvik... Then would wipe ALL data/factory reset. Then I would install my new rom off of my SD card.
With my S3, I cannot access anything on my SD via CWM recovery. I have a SDXC card formatted to FAT32 and am on Blazer 1.8
I want to do a full data wipe before flashing new ROMS, but I am worried that if I do, I won't have a way of getting a zip file back on my phone after doing so.
It ALMOST seems like. Remember being able to access my SD in CWM when I was on a stock rooted rom. But I'm not positive.
How does one do a wipe data option in CWM and then get a flash able zip back on the phone afterwards if the SD card is not available to see and move data to/from?
I don'tanna end up wiping all data and then finding out that I hav no way of installing/restoring a rom.
Thanks!

Move on to TWRP for your recovery, much more features but if you don't want to do that go to CWM's website and update to 6.0 it will allow you to "see" your sd card

+1 on TWRP, much nicer and more features and themable To install, download GooManager open it and grant SU access then tap menu and select "Install OpenRecoveryScript" and it'll do the rest.
BTW you're following the process ok, except you're doing one additional step that is not required that is to wipe cache and dalvik. When you factory reset you're deleting the data partition which also has both cache. It should be wipe system then do factory reset, flash the ROM after that and you should be all set.
Install stock JB LS8 after wipe
I got info on how to wipe the phone using CW mode. It does explain to format boot and system partition and ask to reboot. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410881)I was left in confusion. If boot is formatted, would CW mode work after reboot ? After full wipe, can I get GT-I9100 in download mode and do stock rom installation using ODIN ? Thanks in advance.

Formatting Boot will not affect CWM. CWM is your receovery not your boot. Also after a full wipe you should be able to get into download mode to flash via ODIN.
Install TWRP or update CWM, one version of CWM had a bug and don't let you access the sdcard.
If you choose TWRP, in the Format Menu, DO NOT use "Format Data" Second Row/Right Option. It will delete your data on the internal storage.

Make sure you have the most recent version of CWM. I can access both internal and external storage. It's downloadable from the ClockworkMod app.

I've followed this guide on this forum to get a2sd:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670087
And I have the Modaco mod, and I know it said there was a chance it could go wrong.
But I tried nandroid restore and it didn't work, now I'm still in a boot loop, what should I do
Trying to do this now:
Run a2sd remove to reset everything back...that will fix the bootloop by setting everything back to internal storage.
Hope it works
Didn't work.
Have u partitioned ur sd card with an ext2 partition? im using apps2sd, if i take my sd card out and turn my fone on, it gets stuck in a boot loop, partion ur sd card using recovery, if that dosent work just flash onther rom from recovery lol

I used rommanager to partition my sd card.
And the a2sd remove command didn't work, still in loop
Also, did you flash a MCR custom rom that already includes Apps2SD? if you did, then all you needed to do was partition your SD card while still in Recovery Mode. You only need to install Apps2SD separately if the rom you want to flash does not have Apps2SD incorporated into the rom.
If you have a rom with Apps2SD already installed, then in Recovery Mode, perform a full wipe, flash the rom, partition your SD card, and then convert ext2 to ext3. All steps should be perfomed while still in Recovery Mode and before you reboot your device.

The rom doesn't contain apps2sd.
And with a full whipe, do you mean a factory reset?

Yep, try going back into Recovery Mode menu and select Wipe > Wipe Data/Factory Reset using the optical trackpad. If you still get stuck, then I would suggest that you follow this guide:
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
It is very easy to follow and explains how to install Apps2SD separately. Try flashing the rom file (rootedupdate.zip) it mentions because you would otherwise be stuck in bootloop if you re-flashed your MCR rom having no way to load the Sense UI again and place the r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip onto your SD Card (unless you maybe downloaded it using ROM Manager or had another smartphone available where you could take out your sd card, insert it into the other phone, mount it, and place the downloaded r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip onto your sd card, then re-insert it back into your phone to flash)
Just remember to perform a full wipe in Recovery Mode menu (Wipe > Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe > Wipe cache, Wipe > Wipe Dalvik-cache). Then re-flash the rom and follow the guide to install Apps2SD.
Sorry to answer this late, I was away for the weekend.
It's a nice guide, but I don't have those files on my sd card, and I don't have an sd card adaptor.
I don't want to send my phone in
Try wiping everything (data, ext and dalvik-cache) and either try your nandroid backup again or reflash the rom.

I always tried the factory wipe and cache clear from my custom recovery but that didn't work.
Then I did a factory wipe and cache clear from my standard recovery and he started up again
I think everybody was telling me to do this, but I always did it in custom recovery.
Thanks a lot for the help tkirton and MasDroid!!

Reboot into recovery mode. Then Click on install zip from SD Card. Browse SD card and find the Clockworkmod folder click on that then you should see a zip file called recovery update. Click on it and let it flash the file. Once you it finishes it should take you back to recovery menu. If you downloaded the ROM it should be on your SD card. If not scroll thrpyfg menu and click on mounts. mount your device as a usb connect your computer transfer your ROM from your PC to your SD card and install.
Hope this works for you. If not post the ROM you're having issues with and what results are after trying steps above and I'll try to wall you through alternative.
Go into recovery and wipe everything....click on mounts and storage and format everything starting from boot, wipe cash partition, wipe dalvik cash,wipe...wipe wipe n double wipe...reboot recovery, mount the sd card and usb and start again

Mounted to computer through recovery as u said downloaded Leedroid because the rom i had was not on the sd card and it looks like it's STILL in the boot loop coz i clicked reboot after it flashed and now it's making an r2d2 noise and showing a loading screen then playing the noise and doing the same over and over again?
WTF?!?!?!?!
If you flashed a different rom you need to do a full wipe (data/factory reset and cache).

I beg to differ but you are entitled to your opinion. However, just to give you some insight, Leedroid is one of the more respected and hardworking developers. His updates are not weekly because he provides stable and highly reliable ROMs. Remember your problem existed prior to trying to flash Leedroid's ROM.
Now more likely than not there was a user error in the process. Did you format your SD Card FAT 32 with EXT3 partition? Do you have the update.zip on the ROOT of your SD Card if not Leedroid provides a link to the CWM update.zip file.
Did you unmount the device in recovery and did you properly remove device from PC (if using Windows unplugging the device without properly removing/ejecting will cause bad data blocks/errors on the SD Card).
And of course did you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache before flashing Leedroid's rom? If you did all of these things the only other issue that you may be experiencing is that you must have USB Debugging enabled on the device.
Leedroid provide exception support for his ROMs and he also updates his threads in answering general questions and troubleshooting if any one is experiencing issues after flashing his ROM.
I do not have access to a pc with usb, so I realize that cuts out the easiest way to do this. I have CWM Recovery Touch 6.something installed. When using the phone I can download the zips off my network then reboot into recovery to flash. What I want to do is wipe EVERYTHING, then somehow get the zips back on to the sd card and flash so the thing is completely fresh. Is this possible?

You should be able to format the SD card, then download the ROMs/zips and then format data. This will leave the SD card in tact and wipe everything else.
Mobile Odin
Rom Manager
Install the ROM Manager app. I believe you can choose to clear the cache and wipe it clean with the push of a button or two.
Recently rooted i747 with CWM and flashed Android 4.3 with no issues (shoulda just stopped there). I wanted to flash CM 10.2... data/factory reset, cache wipe, Davlik wipe... but flash failed. Rebooted into recovery to reflash 4.3, but nothing is found under sdcard/0. What am I missing? Thanks for any help!
Use the file explorer in recovery and navigate to /data/media/0. Your stuff should be there.
CWM v6.0.3.1
- reboot system now
- install zip from sdcard
- install zip from sideload
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
I apologize for the ignorance, but I cannot for the life of me find any file explorer. When I try to install zip from sdcard, my only options are: 0/, clockworkmod/, and obb/. All of which state that no files are found.
Dl Rom onto sdcard with a computer. Maybe a factory reset will help first. I'm used to using twrp, which has a file explorer in it
I'll definately try that. Will my internal storage still be there? Thanks again.

Yes, your internal storage will still be there, unless u specifically wipe it. The file stucture is just a little different on these roms...

Using custom recoveries will not wipe your internal sd unless you specifically do so. Stock recovery (3e) however WILL wipe your internal on the latter releases.
Got it! Data/factory reset before flashing a stock 4.1.2 ROM through Odin and everythng is golden. Thanks!

Did you try rebooting from within the recovery menu "reboot system"? If that doesn't help just reflash v5 again since you can access recovery.Good luck

Sometimes the recovery refuses to flash the ROM correctly so one needs to switch recovery so i'll link you up with philz 6.25.0 just flash that recovery using your existing twrp recovery and then "reboot recovery" from within the twrp menu now it will bring up your new philz recovery up. (place the zip file of philz touch in your sd card via card reader)
Go to this http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/n7100 scroll down and download 6.25.0 or 6.26.0 .zip file and follow the above steps. If you need help on how to wipe your phone using philz follow this guide below
Go to mounts and storage and click on format/system, format/cache, format/preload , format/data and format/data and data/media (/sdcard)<--- this will format your internal storage,so back up if you have anything saved on it..NOTE: Do NOT format storage/sdcard1 cause this is your external sd card if you accidentally do format it you will lose all the contents on your sd card.If you still want to format your external sd card by this way make sure you have a card reader handy to be able to transfer the downloaded ROM and other contents on your sd card.
Now go back to main menu and click on advanced menu and wipe dalvik cache ,once again go back to main menu and click on wipe cache partition and go ahead and wipe it.At the very end go back to main menu and click on wipe data/factory reset and choose Clean to install a New ROM.Done.You have successfully performed all the wipes. Now you can go ahead and flash the ROM.
Now once you have succesfully flashed your rom and it boots up and you set up your phone, you can always switch back to twrp ,Good luck
