[n00b] how to nightly grease my butter? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My very n00b question is... I'm running codefireX JB rom and I know it gets frequent "nightly"updates.
To install them do I have to always go through the total wipe process and reset my device?
If not... will updating screw up my settings? (like folder position & content on homescreen)
Thanks in advance

Most of the time with nightlys you can just dirty flash. That is to flash without any type of wiping. Remember that this may screw things up so always have a backup and no one will give support if you didn't full wipe! That's said or should be gone to install within wiping.

scaryshark is right, but one thing: unless you back up your home screen, it will reset. Some home screens will allow backups, like Nova and Apex. As far as I know, Trebuchet cannot be backed up.

Hey, why will the home screen reset if it's dirty flashed? The data partition is still intact, so the home screen data for whichever launcher is there too and it shouldn't reset if only the /system partition is flashed right? I always dirty flashed when I was using cfX and never had my home screen reset.

Oops. Mine always resets; I just assumed everyone's did that. My bad. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Maybe. If all you're doing is flashing a new nightly, gapps and then wiping cache+dalvik, it shouldn't reset.

It's answered above, but the long and short of it is, dirty flashes are generally okay. You only need to wipe cache and dalvik (and sometimes not even that). That should keep all your settings. However, always do a nandroid backup first, and do not report bugs from dirty flashes. If you find bugs from dirty flashes, do a full wipe and clean flash before reporting any bugs.

Have u factory reset cleared cache and also cleared dalvik?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Alright..
Firstly, reboot into recovery and wipe full data & the dalvik cache.
Second, flash a rom to which your device fulfills all requirements (eg. not D2EXT, D++)
Third, restart your device after installing the ROM.
Fourth, WAIT!!!!! if it doesnt boot after like 15 minutes then something has gone wrong somewhere.
Just to make things easy to start with, you should try using a rom that doesn't require an ext2/3/4 partition and just uses fat. Unless you are confident you can do that correctly.

thanks all ,after wipe partition and wipe data factory , worked with me.

Seriously, you should do a little reading tutirials and guides on flashing.
You cannot flash a ROM with a different base on top of another - that's why the bootloops. (E.g. Flashing DHDport on top of Stock Rooted or GB on FROYO won't work without wiping).
Secondly, it is wiped it - ergo FORMATTED it, the ext partition is still there.

I understand that i have to see which radio can work with?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Listen, everybody's here to help each other. It's what we android users do.
A little of "Please", and "thank you very much", "you guys are great"... goes a long way...
As for the radio, the easiest would have been, to upgrade your stock system to Froyo 2.29 before running the ROM.
Stock, before a custom ROM. This would probably avoid any radio problems.
If your phone is working and you have no issues, then you shouldn't worry about it.
Some people, get a little angry, when the same problem happens over and over again, and there are posts to cover these problems.
But, I think most of us, will jump right in, and give a hand to those who ask politely. And give a big thanks, when the issue is fixed.
Oh, and all ROMs are not created to work with Desire...

Flash an ICS ROM. Be sure to do a clean install. Wipe data, system, cache and dalvik cache. You can flash between as many ROMS as you wish, between ICS,JB or even GB in no particular. Flash away buddy!

I never have that issue even with dirty flash. Have you tried to wipe system, data, everything? I think you can try to Odin back to stock, then root it and start everything fresh. Sometimes the old files are still left over and mess up your phone.

The sad thing is, that's all I've been doing. Using Odin and keep going back to stock, update to ICS with Kies, and then hope to try and run another version of the ROM, and still no luck. It's quite frustrating. And yeah, I wiped system, data, everything. Did a full on wipe.
Also, has anyone have been getting call issues? Like you sound muzzled to your callers?

Here is solution for your issue:
1. Upgrade recovery, or switch to TWRP.
2. Clean flash rom again.
3. Flash the newest radio UVLI4, or LI1.

DO NOT do that if you are on the latest TWRP or CWM 6.+ cause Darkside super wipe was discontinued. For AOKP and CM 10.1 Nightly I just did a data/partition wipe and flash gapps.

HTC Desire HD ROM issues

Hey guys,
I am using an HTC DHD for the last year, and i've encountered issues with different ROMs
These are the ROMs ive been using, varying from one to another, looking for the most efficient / best performance.
List of ROMs:
ICS
Cyanogen (many versions)
CodefireX (ace-4.2.2-SR15, ace-OpenMaster-SR19)
JellyBean
TrainWreck4.2nov18
ace_PAC_JB_4.2.2-v21.0.1_20130317-080548 - Currently using
So far the best ROM for performance is the one im using (ace_PAC_JB_4.2.2-v21.0.1_20130317-080548)
Yet i cannot open "Google play store", nor many other applications such as "Waze","iGo" even "Subway surfers" , i see the loading screen, and then the app just closes itself.
I'll be glad to have some assistance, maybe logs i can see.. any suggestion is welcome.
Thanks

The most efficient/best performance roms will be ones based on official firmware. Arhd6 etc.
As for the fc's, in application manager have you tried 'clear data' and 'clear cache' on the apps that are force closing?
You have flashed gapps?

Yes indeed i have cleared the cache, i even deleted the app itself after cleaning the cache.
here are the steps as i do the ROM installation.
1) I copy the zip file to the SD-card.
2) - reboot into recovery mod
- wipe data/factory reset
3) - Install ZIP from sdcard
4) then i chose the zip (ROM) i want to install.
That's it....

Bootloop after Jedi Mind Trick 3 Install
Performed a full system wipe - Factory Reset/Data Wipe, format /system, Wipe Dalvik Cache - using CWM. Flashed ROM, Fixed Permissions, then rebooted. Waited 10 minutes (actually more like 20 minutes) but was stuck in a bootloop. The loading bar almost completely fills in each time (only a small fraction - i.e. about 0.5mm - remains unfilled) before the reboot occurs automatically. I read else where on the SGH-T989 forum of similar problems with 2.0. Someone said that wiping the data caches before AND after flashing the ROM always works for them. I assume they mean format /data cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache after flashing ROM but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience here?

Thanks. I found the darkside wipe files and downloaded them. Then I read elsewhere that if you have the up-to-date CWM version (6 or later), it will do the same thing accomplished by the darkside wipes. Do you know if this is a fact? Thanks again.
