When ever i have my Data off and people send me Picture messages it just says downloading, is there any way it could automatically turn on data for that period of time then automatically turn off? Im using Jedi Mind Trick V5.
-Thanks
it's hard to give a serious reply when your post shows that your extremely lazy.
If your keeping your data "off" then no you can't download and/or send attachments. if your worried about Battery life change your settings to 2g only.
certain roms (on my sgs 1 and amaze) have the option to always recieve mms. I haven't seen this option in any of the sgs2 roms ive tested.
you can change your data in your options
Menu key --> settings --> More ---> Mobile Networks
you can also check mms settings via the sms app by opening your sms pressing menu key then selection options.
if your rom has the option for always download you will find it in 1 of those 2 locations.
Has state of the art phone with one of the fastest data speeds....

Idk about a lot of bg data but it will save some at least. What do you mean about the market? Could you explain more?
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
The market requires background data to varify services etc... for the apps you mentioned just disable auto-sync. Also keep display brightness low, wifi and Bluetooth off when not in use, check all app settings to ensure they aren't running automatically or frequently updating and also turn vibrate/haptic feedback off if possible.
Yahoo mail doesn't like me when I disable background data -_- how do I take care of that?

Yahoo! Mail and the Market do require background data. Market I understand. Yahoo! Mail, not so much.
In any case, you can use the built-in E-mail app to get to Yahoo! (not Gmail, sometimes labeled "Corporate Email", it's the little envelope with the gold stamp coming out)
Check this thread from earlier today for the settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962674
Background does save a lot battery but I use the market and some other apps a lot , so I just leave it on, one thing that can save you a battery is using WiFi , like if you at home and you have WiFi use WiFi instead it will help , and the mail app (blue envelope for HTC sense ) let you set up yahoo, is not push but you can set up how often you want it check and it does appear read when you check online

This didn't work when I first got my phone but it works now? How did you do this magic trick!?
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
Try k9 from market. It is a heck of a email program and free. I removed gmail and yahoo email along with mail.apk. If handles all my general email in a tight package. And to disable background update will save battery life since 3G does not Ned to ba abler.
Yes it does save lots of your battery! Just turn off ALL internet access. Your phone will go for days and days without needing a charge.
(Home menu with free space for an additional icon) Menu Button -> + Add to Home -> Widget -> Settings -> Mobile Network.
When you are not using the phone anything other than phone calls, turn off the Mobile network. All background updates like weather, e-mail, etc will stop until you turn them back on.
(Home menu with free space for an additional icon) Menu Button -> + Add to Home -> Widget -> Settings -> Sync All
This is great to manually turn on the Internet and have the phone sync up all the services then turn off the mobile network.
Just flash my Defy with CM7 RC 1.5. It is very good, i am now happy.
Only one problem for now, can't send and receive any MMS message.
It is always: Currently unable to sent your message. It will be sent when service became available.
Checked APN, baseband, everything is OK. Also flash new nigthly, but without any result.
Any solution?
Tnx
Nordic works fine
After flashing nordic (step one, flashing CM 7 RC 1.5), i was able to send and receive MMS, but again, on CM 7 same error.
Please, anybody?
Tnx
I'm on same build and I have just tested sendind myself a MMS: works fine.
Just make sure that data is enabled and if you use DroidWall that you did not check the 3G/Data box of 'Messaging' or 'Any applications' [in the blacklist mode].
I also have problems receiving mms.
I received them because of froyo without 3g connection?

i have the same problem, and i do not know how to fix it.
PS, maybe it related to the setting "Data enable(enable data access over Mobile network)", i disabled it, if enable, huge data will transport and cost a lot.

Well, without [Wireless & networks/Mobile networks/Data enabled] checked you will will not be able to send MMS: plain and simple. You want to send a picture over your 2G phone carrier: yes there will be fees for that.
You don't want any other things to use 2G data while you send your MMS: fair enough! So now you have to learn how to do that.
So you could spend some time going through each and every application and service on your phone that might do so and disable any automatic updating: for emails, facebook, Market ads and what not... but it could be tedious.
The easiest way for you to achieve this would be to use Droidwall [like I originally referrred to above ]. In there you will find 2 modes: 1- black list that blocks selected apks to access either wifi or 3G/data and 2- white list that does the opposite.
So install Droidwall [free from Market], make sure you select black list mode on top. And oh! you need root to use this so make sure that you also click "Allow" and check the 'remember' box when you see the Superuser permission request screen the first time.
Once that is done, seleck/check everything on the second column EXCEPT "Messaging" AND the first box called "(Any application)- Same as selecting all applications"
Additionally, select any application from the first column that you KNOW should not access internet at all (on wifi this time) --> as a bonus, doing so will block any ads from those free applications
Press the menu button and press "Apply rules" [or "save rules" the first time??] and make sure that you see "Firewall enabled" with a green line through it.
On the picture attached, you can see that I've selected the (Any application) for 3G/data instead of all except the 2 I told you. I leave it that way to block all data and when I need to send MMS, I unchecked it (and press "apply rules") for just the short time of sending the message then I re-enable it afterwards.
Any other questions? Lol - just joking I'm no Android help line hehe!
But I hope that this helped you guys; if so, you can log-in and hit that "Thanks" button here bellow: -->
Cheers

well well,thank bro, i will try~
can anyone shed some light on what exactly Mobile Data On/Off does? I turned Mobile Data off and yet i still can make/receive calls, send/rcv texts, access inet, access the market, receive vmail notifications.
Also, GB allowed to turn "background data" off, which really helped preserve battery life by hours. Is there any type of option for this in ICS. turning background data off had the effects of stopping vmail notifications, wouldnt allow access to the market while off, and basically blocked alot of apps constantly updating
thanks
It allows you to keep up with your data usage .....if on it will show how much you have used and warn u if your coming close to what you set as a limit ....would be great on a carrier that throttles or you only have say 5 gb ..... All you have to do is go into system settings and scroll down to accounts and sync under personal and turn it off whatever you don't want to sync

Well mobile data on/off should do just that. Toggle your mobile data on and off.
Setting a mobile data limit will limit the amount of data used when it's enabled.
I have a very bizzare problem, as of the middle of last week if I try to go to a https site or use an app that uses https it will not find the server. I get a message in the browser "Data connectivity problem. A secure connection could not be established." or the app just says "cannot locate server." I have not changed a thing on here. on that day or before so it just doesn't make sense. Ive cleared cache, browser history, etc and this problem is both over 3G and over WiFi. Any ideas?
Try wiping cache and dalvik. If that doesn't work, make backups with titanium backup and a nandroid and wipe data and cache. Then restore your titanium backup backups.

It means you did not set up the APN for your carrier so you have data connection problem and not receiving text messages as a result.
Settings-> Mobile networks -> Access point name
Remember to press the menu button and chose Save when you're done.

errrr.... I get text messages fine. I also don't even have APN in that menu. And I havent changed anything this is something that just happened randomly, the phone is over 2 years old.
I get a lot of group text messages. they come in as mms so my data has to be on to receive them. I don't ever get a message if my data is off.
is there a way to set up textra to turn data on and receive the message and then turn it off right after? like to save some battery life by not having data on all the time.
I am on loserskaters 4.3 official ota.

I use an app called 3G Watchdog to turn my data on / off manually. Regardless of the name it also works with 4G/LTE. The app has a widget for desktop toggling of data and a second widget that reports your data usage to you, in case you are on a limited data plan like I was.
I am currently on stock, rooted 4.1.2. SGS3. I used it with 4.1.1 on this phone. Also worked on SGS Captivate on stock GB and CM9, that was 3G and less, no LTE.

Theres a couple of apps that you can tell them to turn the app or apps at a time or moment or the day, turn data on/off, etc... One example is Tasker.
Not what I had in mind...
I guess I wasn't that clear.
What I am wondering is if there is a way to have data off, but if you get an MMS request from ATT, the Textra (or even the stock app) would turn data on to receive it, and then turn it back off when it is done.
Could of sworn I had something like this working on Slimbean or Task's AOKP. But I left those to come back to TW for reliability .

I'm running dirty unicorns 4.0 and it has that feature built in, at least with the stock messaging app. I leave my data off, but if i send or recieve an mms, data turns on long enough to send or download the attachment, then immediately turns itself back off. I love this feature!!
Chomp SMS does this now.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like textra does support it. Seems to be working so far.
If not I can try chomp sms
