I should be getting one today so for right now I'm just asking questions to be prepared for when I do get it. What should I know about it?, What should I format it in?, I heard you can't have apps on it, is that true?, etc.
I just got a 64 GB sdxc card last week. I'm running PA with a CM10 base, which doesn't support exFAT. So I've had to format it to FAT. It does work like a charm though.

It should come formatted as exFat, if you intend to use the card on Touchwiz based Rom's and Windows XP+ operating systems, that will be fine. If you want greater compatibility or intend to run CM10, you need to reformat with FAT32. The only real downside with FAT32 is that the max file size is 4GB. I highly suggest using the SD Card formatter. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
Enjoi the new card.
I would recommend sending it back. Formatting a 64 GB micro SD card was a bit useless to me as it's performance was awful and functionality was lost.
Its like buying a Ferrari and putting a ford focus engine in it. Do not waste your time formatting it to FAT32.

Any proof of this? I don't believe there is any appreciable performance difference between FAT32 and exFAT. Again, really the only functionality LOST from going from exFAT to FAT32 is the 4GB file size limitation. I can't remember the last time I came across a file that size. You do gain compatibility with almost every modern OS and almost all embedded devices (cameras, printers, etc etc) by going to FAT32 however.

Yes there is proof all over the internet. This is the first thing that came up when I went to Google. http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/software-technology/difference-between-exfat-and-fat32/
Having a 64 GB micro SD card formatted to FAT32 will be a degradation of overall performance. FAT32 is not optimized for large disks and read write speeds are effected because of block sized on the disk and fragmentation of files. If you don't believe me, just go buy one and see how it performs.

Even in your link it says very little to the performance differences between the filesystems. Also keep in mind FAT32 was very much widely used with traditional hard disk drives well past 64GB with little issue.
Fragmentation can and does happen with all modern filesystems. Remember when Microsoft touted NTFS to be fragmentation proof? Again, if you look at the link I posted, it has graphs and charts showing little to no significant performance difference between exFAT and FAT32.
Fragmentation is also less of a concern because the card in a SGS3 is strictly an external storage device, not a random read-write access system partiton.
I have 4 of these cars and love the extra space they give me. They have proven to perform at least as well as any 8, 16, or 32 GB card.
Just got it and I don't see why people make this seem like it's so difficult to use. I put the microSD card in the phone and that was it. I started to move some songs from the phones internal storage to the card. I swear I came across so many threads where people acted like you needed some sort of full page tutorial on how to use it. I understand if you're using different ROMs but if you're just using the Stock ROM there's like nothing difficult at all.
Hello, so I received my 64gb sd card also and everything seemed to work perfectly. I had backed up my old 16 gb card and copied songs and pictures to the new one.
Then it started to act up on me. I would be listening to music and after a while my phone can't read the sd card anymore. It would tell me that the music file was not the right format. I also checked the sd card with the file browser and it shows nothing on the card.
I have read that people have trouble getting the phone to read the sd card from the get go saying that it's corrupted but I don't have that problem. Mine reads fine but then stops. I have it as exFat and also have formatted through the phone but no luck. Would formatting it to FAT32 fix the problem?

So far I haven't experienced any problems and hopefully it will stay that way.
I had just went thru this with a new 64GB msd card and fubar'd it beyond belief. I tried putting the card into my PC and it said the card was corrupted, formatting it would not work/fix it ~ in short it was a PITA.
I exchanged it for another.
Once I got my new card I promptly put in my Galaxy Note (which will tell you that the card is not reconized and needs to be formatted), formatted the card, put my phone into UMS mode and transfered all my files to it. Once that was done I took the card out of my Note and put it into my SGS3. The card no longer has problems going from SGS3 to PC to any other device and I get all my storage space. Problem solved.

At least they break down wayyyyyyy less than anything from the likes of Ferrari
So this thread has been dead for some time. Sorry for the Jack, but no point in opening a new one since this one has some useful info in it.
Here is my deal. I bought a 64gb SanDisk on Cyber Monday bc of some link that someone put on here. Got a great deal - $38 but it was on back order for flippin ever and I just got it the other day. I have already reformatted it and copied all my crap over to my PC waiting for it to be transfered.
I am running a personal kang of LiquidSmooth RC7 with LeanKernel v1.6 (they are by far the most stable combo for me). The problem is that it will not mount the 64gb card. I always thought it was Kernel dependent, but not so sure about that anymore.
*I have switched to KT's kernel and it doesn't mount it either.
*So just to do some checking, I mounted it in my tablet (Transformer FT101), worked fine.
*Is seen and recognized in my PC.
*The guy that sits next to me at work has a VZW SGS3 (Stock/non-Rooted) and it shows up just fine.
*I flashed Darthstalker (Twiz) and it showed up.
*I flashed Xtremepedia (CM10 base) and it did NOT show up. Tried stock kernel that came with it, LK and KT kernels and all 3 were a no go.
So what I know it that it will work with TWiz (but we all knew that anyways), it will not work (for me at least) with KT or LK kernels. I abhore TWiz ROMs (No offense to anyone but I like AOSP better/ not a big fan of PA or PAC-I already have a tablet).
Here is my question. Is anyone running an AOSP ROM and using a 64gb card? I will be downloading and flashing these this week but wanted a jump on one that someone knows for a fact (meaning they have a 64gb in their phone now) is working.

You can use the 64GB card, you just need to reformat it as FAT32 instead of exFAT. Yes I have a 64GB card now, Yes I've used it with a plain vanilla AOKP/AOSP Rom both in my SGS3 and in my Sensation previously. All worked fine if the card was formatted as FAT32. I highly suggest using the SD Card Association formatter utility. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ I also like to stick with 32K clusters for Android, works well for me.
my 64GB card was working fine for awhile in my S3, stock and FreeGS3 r6 and r7.
All of a sudden a few days ago it failed to mount. i'm sure FAT32 will work i'm just extremely curious why it stopped.

FYI, here's my reasoning behind the 32K clusters. This bug may or may not still exist in 4.x, but I don't really care, I'd rather avoid the whole thing than to test it out. Call me lazy. Again, the best way I've found to do this is to use the aforementioned formatting utility, it will let you format FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB and let you choose the cluster size.

Pretty Much the Same problem
I am running liquidsmooth RC9 with leankernel 3.0.52 and my D2TMOB refuses to mount my 64gb SanDisk. I flashed the stock rom back the sd card works just fine. Then I flashed back liquidsmooth and formatted the card to fat 32 and it doesn't even recognize the card. When I format it back to exFat it tells me I have a damaged card. Can you someone please point me in the right direction?

I am sorry I won't be too specific but I read somewhere on xda that aosp based roms will not read extFat because it is a proprietary format. So one has to format one's extSDCard to fat 32. The easiest way to do that is downloading the GUIFORMAT software from the following link W W W. ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm. Makd sure you fixed the typos on thatt url... The only way I can post a link. Once you format it to fat 32 and you are done. Just insert the sd card on your phone, mount it from the storage menu, and start enjoying your extra storage.

I bought this card on black Friday for only $30. I just put it in and it works fine. Sandisk also makes an app which you can see everything on your phone and sd card easily plus ability to transfer files to either one really easy. Highly recommended only of you can get it for a good price. In Canada at best buy etc its like $200 which is insane.

I had asked for some insigh on the issue of my external sd card unexpectedly ejecting itself (not physically) , and someone told me the fix was to format it on the computer first, then put it back in thw phone and format it. The problem got even worse and then deleted all my data, and now wont even recognize that the card is even inserted. Am i screwed? Im hearing other people are having this problem as well. Whats the deal!?

Will the sd card read on the computer?
Also when you format your card.... That is basically deleting your data....

Having the same issue as well. I bought a sandisk class 10 sd card 32gb when I got my note a month ago. I started to notice the same messages about my card once I updated out of the lk1. My card is draining my battery life as well. So right now I'm experimenting with a blank 8gb sd card in my phone. It's only been a few hours but I havent had any kind of sd card messages. I think the sd card is the problem...why...idk

Has this happened to anybody whom switched their external memory for the internal? I ask because I would like to do that, but if the SD card fails will it perma-brick the phone?
my 32g SD card (forgot which brand) fried one month after i got my note 2. it was fine the night before, then the next morning a message on my phone said something about it cant read the SD card. my computer couldnt even read the card. lost everything from pictures and videos, man o man
I've gone through two micro sd's, both Sandisk, a 32GB and a 64GB.
The 32GB card was Fat32, the 64GB card was ExFAT. They both worked okay for a while, then I noticed the Android media scanner running too often, then I started getting the "unexpected removal" messages. In both cases once the "unexpected removal" messages started the battery life becomes unacceptable.
I was storing about 26GB of ALAC music files, using iSyncr->iTunes and Rocket Player.
I tried formatting on the phone and starting over and formatting on the computer and starting over, and low-level formatting the 32GB card. It would work for a little while and then the behavior would start again.
I'm not using any card at all now. I may try again with something other than a Sandisk to see if it makes a difference, but I don't feel like gambling the cost of a new card for a while.
[ Edit ] If it matters, my Note2 is not rooted, and running the stock ROM with all updates.
I had the same thing happen to me this week with a Class 10 Sandisk 64GB Ultra. I had had no errors since purchased at the time I got my Note 2 (release day). Suddenly the card was unreadable mid day on the Note 2. It couldn't be read by PC either. I did reformat on the PC and was able to recover some of the data with the Sandisk recover tool purchased from the Sandisk website. After reformatting I did try to use it again in the Note 2 but it failed nearly immediately. I am in the process of replacing it under warranty and am now using the 16G Sandisk card that I had been using in my Evo 4g
I am using the leaked stock LK8 kernel with H20 rom with no other issues otherwise.

This seems to be a relatively known issue with specifically SanDisk 32GB Class 10 UHS-1 red/grey cards and the Note 2. When it started happening to me, I pulled out the card, tested the crap out of it like a dozen times, reformatted the card in my PC, and put it in my Acer A500 tablet and put the Patriot 32GB Class 4 that was in the A500 in my Note 2. Both are working fine now for the past week.
There's a more extensive discussion of this on the T-Mobile Note 2 forum:

Did you remove that little blue plastic sheet covering the card's aluminum housing? I was was half through doing that before I decided that I better check the internet first.
I seem to be having trouble with my SANDISK 32GB Class 10 micro SD card. When I first got the Note II in November, I had a PNY card that was giving me trouble, so I got the SANDISK card to replace it. it's been reliable until this morning, in that the card lost all data, and even after reformatting it, it seems to work for about 10 minutes, thenphone does not recognize it. It's been trouble free for almost 3 months.
I seem to read that these SD cards on the Note II is extremely unreliable in general. Perhaps I need to switch brands. What would the very very very best brand of the micro SD card would you recommend? What micro SD card would be the most durable? I've always thought that SANDISK was good, but how about other brands? I'd like to keep using a 32GB Class 10 card if possible. I'm looking to use a card that will last more than 3 months.
Also, I'm completely stock on my phone...as I did not do any rooting.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW...I love the Note II!!
Thanks,
Mike

I have tried everything they suggest to fix it, multiple reformats, both internal and with a computer. Once it starts doing that, it won't stop. It's the card, not sure what, but it's just a bad card.
My new one is working fine, so far.

OK... I lost hope in any sandisk 32gb sdcard.... Just lost hope.
Something like 4 months ago, I got a brand new sandisk 32gb sdcard to use with my note2
Filled It over 16gb... BAM!!!....a dead SD card
Got it replaced with another one "also sandisk 32" and i tried filling it to test it, had 11 GB free "19gb used" and downloaded an APK file, when I was opening it, it said "file not supported" or something like that.
So I went to my files wondering why an apk isnt associated by downloads app, and I open it finding no extSdcard anymore.
Storage in settings says insert SD card, tried it in an s2 and it said empty SD card.
So please guys give me a solution. Cuz my whole life is in it. Thanks guys.
Got samsung 32gb card after similar fiasco with SanDisk.... no problems with the Sammy card
scribbled from my note 2 (N7100)
I was on my second Sandisk 32gb for 1 week when it also gave up the Ghost.
Ended up getting a full refund and putting that towards a Samsung 64gb.
Sammy is full to the brim of MP3's and has not missed a beat.
I think Note 2 Owners should give Sandisk Cards a Miss.
I have use a Samsung 8Gb SD Card with swap and 2nd partion for 1 year and never have a problem. You should try changing the brand, the Note II overheating issue is clearly a problem when using SD Card. The best thing you could do is be careful

Thanks guys for your replys, i really appreciate it.
my device detects it but says "empty sd card" when i format the device just goes to boot animation and starts over (atleast thats in paranoid rom, will try on sammy)
It's just that its got on my nerves, i got a refund from the first card, and i think its really a waste of time to get a second refund and a third card.
16gb (10 usable) is not enough for my use "u could call me a pig when it comes to storage " and this whole sd card thing is really pissing me off.
i use 2 roms "thanks to devil kernel" and its really hard to maintain space considering that u have to install apps on both. and when i put the sd in a card reader and want to format it, it gives me "30mb" as the disk size. i just wish 2 know whats the cause... is it sammy rom?
thanks guys anyways
Perhaps you have some partitions messed up. And the dual rom/kernel thing probably isn't setting up either storage correctly. And I think you're addicted to android. It is affecting other hardware in your life. Lol.

Thanks for ur reply, I'd repartition if I could, but unfortunately I can't access it at all.
And the dual ROM thing is a bit messed up. In aosp ROM it doesn't even detect internal SD. I have to access it through /data/media
And yes.... I'm very addicted to android

All my music and videos was there. .... I played fine... I restart the tablet... now are gone. .. only a few pictures. .. and all the carpets and files has like a u symbol. .
With my first micro card,, the same,, also I did format with the same tablet... copy my files and the same. ..:crying:
Please there any mod or something ? Please
All the best for you. .

I seen this issue with fake SD cards, as I had a 64gb that did this. Only thing I car recommend is formatting the card fat32. Much more stable over all. Did this on my 64gb sandisk and I've never had an issue, 2.5 years and still going strong.

mine killed 2 64GB cards - one PNY and one samsung. i'd like to think it was just coincidental, but two, brand new... right after the other. the 32 GB works fine.
it started having some of the same problems with a third 64GB but i removed it before it killed that one too and put in in my asus t100 wintab. no problems with it there.
my tablet hates 64GB cards! it's freaking evil! lol
I don't know what to say. I bought a fake 64gb Samsung that was packaged and looked legit from Samsung. Never used pny other than in PC's and laptops. Sandisk has always been my go to and never an issue. But, for large volumes on SD cards I don't trust ext/4, stability issues. Thus my fat32 formatting. I've been doing that for external USB hard drives for use with automotive head units for mass media storage. Not one issue yet to date, volumes as large as 1gb.
